‘Storied Streets’ tracks Montreal's literary history Bryan Demchinsky and Elaine Kalman Naves team up for a study of local authors’ haunts By Wayne Larsen From its colourful, bilingual past to its present-day political tensions.Tontreal has always been a hotbed of ilterary activity, providing both inspiration and sustenance to a diverse array of authors—some local heroes and others whose names rank among the giants of international letters.Lachine spawned Saul Bellow; J.D.Salinger set one of his stories in Verdun, and 19th-century Montreal hosted, among many others, Washington Irving, Charles Dickens.Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain. But why has Montreal far surpassed all other Canadian cities in its attraction for writers? Why have some parts of the city been repeatedly extolled in print while others have been virtually ignored? These and many other questions have provided the fodder for a brand new book that takes an in-depth look into Montreal's literary history—an ambitious undertaking, to be sure, but certainly a subject with enough meat on it to yield a fascinating study. The result is ‘Storied Streets: Montreal in the Literary Imagination’, a deft combination of history, biography and fiction that succeeds admirably in rendering a unique portrait of the city through the prose and poetry of its many writers, both resident and transient.Appropriately, this task has been taken on by two well-known local writers who are themselves integral parts of Montreal's literary scene—Bryan Demchinsky and Elaine Kalman Naves.Currently editor of the Gazette's weekly Books and Visual Arts section.Westmount resident Demchinsky has previously tackled local history in his books ‘Montreal Then and Now: The Photographic Record of a Changing City’ and "Grassroots, Greystones and Glass Towers: Montreal Urban Issues and Architecture’.Naves, who contributes a bi-weekly literary column to Demchinsky's section, has chronicled the city’s writing life in her books ‘Putting Down oots: Montreal's Immigrant Writers’ d ‘The Writers of Montreal’.When Naves originally approached her Gazette editor to collaborate on the project, it was agreed that Demchinsky would handle the historical side while Authors Bryan Demchinsky and Elaine Kalman Naves Naves provided the appropriate literary passages. But over the course of this two-year labour of love, things started to overlap and it soon turned into an equal collaboration where each had a hand in nearly every aspect of the book.Naves said the initial idea was planted by author Chava Rosenfarb following a lecture Naves gave on the subject at McGill University.“Aren’t you going to recycle this?” Rosenfarb asked her, and things developed quickly from there.“I thought this sounded like a good idea—but 1 wasn't going to do it alone,” Naves said.“That's when Iturned to Bryan.” Demchinsky admits he was a bit of a hard sell at first, but it didn’t take long to win him over.“I said 1 was through writing about Montreal” he recalled.“Whenever you write about this city, you get consumed by it.” The clincher came when the two were on their way to the Giller Prize awards in Toronto, and Naves read Demchinsky her McGill lecture on the train.“That's when | knew I was on board,” he said. From the outset, the authors were determined to render an entirely accurate image of Montreal's literary neighbourhoods, and that meant paying as much attention to the city’s countless francophone writers as their The cover of ‘Storied Streets’ anglo colleagues.“If we live in this city, that’s automatic,” Demchinsky said.As a result, the life and work of people like Yves Beauchemin, Nicole Brossard and Hubert Aquin are given the same prominence as Stephen Leacock and FR.Scott.“Montreal was a crucible of Canadian literature for a long time,” said Naves, whose autobiographical book ‘Journey to Vaja' is currently being made into a film. This diversity is certainly borne out by the wide range of authors she and Demchinsky have selected to speak for the city although both admit that deciding who to include and who to omit was an agonizing process. In order to provide the proper historical context, ‘Storied Streets’ traces Montreal's history back to the 16th cen- turv In fact the very existence of Hochelaga- -said to be the original native settlement on the island is called into question through contradictory accounts of the European explorers.Much of the first part of the book is almost pure history, highlighted by Demchinsky’'s knack for finding the appropriate rare illustrations.“We used both historical and contemporary images, which we tried to blend for a sense of past and present, giving the book an historical ballast with a contemporary flavour,” said Demchinsky, who was quick to praise Gazette photographer Gordon Beck for his contribution to the project. As one would expect, ‘Storied Streets’ revisits all of the most obvious locales: St.Urbain Street of the 1940s—the squalid literary stomping grounds of Duddy Kravitz and Jacob Hersh—has been preserved forever in print through Mordecai Richler's comedic recollections.During that same era, St.Henri was the domain of Gabrielle Roy.whose novel ‘The Tin Flute’ quickly became an international success, More recently, the socialist angst expressed in David Fennario’s work has reduced Pointe St.Charles and Verdun to bleak—and often inaccurate—caricatures of working class enclaves.Westmount is also featured with due prominence through the carly writings of Leonard Cohen, who grew up on Belmont Avenue, not to mention the contemporary works of Edward O.Phillips and William Weintraub. But some of the most interesting aspects of the book emerge from its glimpses into less-chronicled neighbourhoods, particularly those vast stretches of residential suburbia where one might not expect an author to find creative inspiration.Nevertheless, Pointe Claire and Ste.Anne de Bellevue to the west and Montreal North and Ville d'Anjou to the cast can all claim to have found their way into the pages of contemporary Canadian fiction.Generously illustrated with images ranging from carly etchings to 19th- and 20th-century photographs from The Gazette and the William Notman archives, the text of ‘Storied Streets’ is also interspersed with brief hiogra- phies of Montreal’s most cherished literary figures.Although this is an inspired, reader-friendly touch that adds to the book's appeal, it is just one of many qualities that combine to raise this work above and beyond the status of mere literary history. It is, in short, a valuable and most welcome contribution to Canadian literature in general and Montreal culture in particular.‘Storied Streets: Montreal in the Literary Imagination’ by Bryan Demchinsky and Elaine Kalman Nauves, published by Macfarlane, Walter & Ross Doug McDougall and the Westmount Municipal Association for bringing this issue before the public as part of the WMA's annual general meeting; and of course the many concerned Westmounters who came out to voice their apprehensions and put some tough questions to the MUHC representatives. As Dr.Scott has pointed out, the ‘mega-hospital’ is still in its initial planning stages, and even if crucial elements such as parking are far from being worked out, it's encouraging to know that a spirit of cooperation exists in all camps. And the MUHC is unlikely to lose this spirit, knowing who holds the trump card in the zoning of one-third of the site.° Letters to Le au Kids and dogs often don’t mix Wayne Larsen To the editor: Kids and dogs. Both groups need, enjoy and benefit from outdoor exercise, noise and fun, and social interaction with others of their own kind. The dynamics in runs and playgrounds are remarkably similar, but runs and playgrounds are separate for good reason.Styles of play.size and speed and communication are quite different.Kids and dogs together should be carefully and constantly monitored. The dog learns not to grab or growl, while the child learns not to tease or poke. What is often forgotten is that many dogs are not familiar with the very young. And it's unlikely you know all the dogs in the run.Allowing your toddler onto ‘dog turf’ can pose some real risks. For some dogs, an arm-waving.joyfully screaming toddler teetering toward them at speed can easily be perceived as a form of attack. The potential results can be disastrous for both—an emotionally and possibly physically scarred child, and/or a dog who may have \\F THE SUPERHOSPITAL ; By Jacques Chagnon, MNA for Westmount-St.Louis A few weeks ago, you may have read a poll published in the newspapers that established a solid correlation among francophone voters between the fear of losing one’s language and culture and the intention to vote for sovereignty. In fact.as the cultural fears of those polled increased.so did their tendency to vote for Quebec independence.Such an analysis is not new, but as far as I know, it is ne of the first times that a poll look- @- into the question from this angle as been published.I have seen similar polls that have never been published which arrived at similar results. Those who juggle with this type of data have often reached the conclusion that laws, such as Bill 101 or the federal Official Languages Act, are important instruments that have played against the promotion of the sovereignty option. These laws have done much to reassure francophones about their future.Bill 101 has played against its separatist authors by making the sovereignty option unnecessary in the minds of many francophones. This bill was modified several times after court judgements.and then, following a few unfortunate detours, the previous government gave birth to Bill 86 which has the great merit of having created political peace in linguistic matters. The goal of this lengthy preamble is to question the PQ’s interest in wanting to completely upset the fragile linguistic equilibrium. They have come to understand that, as long as the language issue is not debated, their option will suffer. And thus, with Madame Beaudoin heading the charge, they invented facts within a partisan “Mme Beaudoin also has the gift of sticking her nose into municipal issues.” committee on the linguistic issue, and then made them public by denouncing a false situation. This is not a trivial gesture—the PQ is rewriting history in order to suit its option. But Mme Beaudoin and her government didn’t stop there, for they have also invented a solution for the fabricated problem.Voila, ladies and gentlemen, the Estates General on language that will take place next fall. Now you might say that this allowed the PQ to get through its congress and skirt around its extremist wing that wanted, at all costs, to reopen the language issue. And you may be right. But it remains that in order to calm a few enraged party members, it's all of Quebec which, through these Estates General, will be plunged into this linguistic soup come this fall.‘ Mme Beaudoin also has the gift of sticking her nose into municipal issues. She recently announced that she has no intention of enlarging the notion of ‘bilingual city’ to that of ‘bilingual district’.By stating this, she effectively tripped up both the mayor of Montreal with his ‘one island, one city’ project, and Minister of Municipal Affairs Louise Harel's intentions to move ahead with forced amalgamations on the Island of Montreal. The Estates General on Language will coincide with a vast local, regional and provincial consultation on health care. The signal the government is sending is that language issues are just as important as health issues. With this type of judgement, it is not surprising that there is such a great deal of incomprehension between the views of PQ members and the general population. This, of course, is nothing new.Kids can enjoy dogs from the other side of the fence (continued from page 6) The blame will probably be put on the dog, which may well not be right and not fair.Even if there is no attack, a youngster can be terrified by a hairy face leaning into the walker to sniff, or a bouncy body reaching to plant a kiss.Make no assumptions and expect nothing more from the dogs than your toddlers. Both groups are highly mobile and short on attention span, with judgement ratings approaching zero! Manage the meetings. The kids can enjoy the dogs from the other side of the fence. On the street, a hand on one and a leash on the other gives control to draw back.or just to have a quiet look-see.Never allow a youngster to run up to a dog from behind.A startled dog can overreact.Kids deserve their turf for play.Dogs deserve theirs, too.In this case, separation works best.Bridget Blackader President, Westmount Dog Owners Association Got a tip?Call 484-7523 ext.27 4901 SHERBROOKE St.W.(just west of Prince Albert) 484-0440 For the latest in shoe fashions Attention GIC Buyers. Are your GICs Maturing?Find out how you can: e Increase safety, with a Government Guarantee e Obtain a higher return without locking-in your money * Receive ongoing professional & personalized service (GUARANTEED RATES" 40101122 CHARLES V.BIERBRIER FINANCIAL ADVISOR 846-3683 35 Merrill Lynch Merrill Lynch Canada Inc.is a Mernber - ADSL Internet connection that will improve download time and increase internet access speed dramatically.“Its like going from a Model T to a Ferrari 512,” said Gordon Clark, responsible for
