morning, that there are no pressing appointments or chores, and the opportunity for another hour of light slumber presents itself? You close your eyes, lulled blissfully away by a few singing birds or perhaps the happy pealing of a distant church bell. And at that precise moment, as if on cue in a bad comedy script, your neighbour fires up his lawn mower — right under your window, it scems.Or worse, it could be the scream of a circular saw or the high-pitched whine of a portable vacuum cleaner — the weapon of choice for those annoyingly hearty souls who inevitably choose sunrise as the most opportune time to suck the accumulated debris from their car’s upholstery. How many joyfully anticipated backyard events, so carefully planned for weeks in advance, have been dampened not by inclement weather but the incessant howl of some neighbouring do-it-yourselfer’s power tools? And then of course there are the private construction and landscaping contractors, who begin their noisy workday at an ungodly hour when most people are still fast asleep, and take their mid-morning break when everyone else is groggily struggling to put on the kettle. Now, as windows are flung open to admit the fresh spring breeze, the threat of local noise pollution is at its highest. It is therefore a most appropriate time for the local city council to announce its intention to revisit and accordingly amend its existing nuisance noise bylaws.Leaf blowers — those expensive and blatantly offensive gadgets which over the past few years have all but replaced the were simple dignity of the classic rake recently singled out as one of the main culprits behind this proposed legislation, although air conditioners have also been handed a dishonourable mention. And not all noise sources are mechanical.Last summer, a few inconsiderate buffoons were said to be laughing and shouting on the sidewalk outside the protective services building in the wee, wee hours, oblivious to all the lights suddenly snapped on in bedroom windows overlooking Stanton Street.Thanktully, the present administration is taking a pro-active approach to this common problem.Perfect peace and tranquility is an impossibility in any urban environment, but any legislation to diminish the decibels is most welcome for those who cherish life's simpler, quieter pleasures.LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A stroll down memory lane To the editor: 1 remember vividly the year Cavendish Mall was opened. It was sometime in August, 1973.My mother and 1 hurriedly walked through the parking lot with great anticipation to really see what all the hype was about. The splendour of it all was simply breathtaking. The beauty of it, the shops, the lights, the architectural maze, left us agape from store to store, and all we could hear from the people surrounding us were the “oohs™ and the “aahs” at the impeccable display.1 clearly remember Steinberg’s and Miracle Mart, (later leased to Lupton Duvall which was then bought by Kaplan), Consumers Distributing, Warsaw, Eaton's, Tip Top, The Bootery, Birks, Elizabeth Hager, Cashmere, Ralph Men's Wear, Lily’s, Silverberg's, and of course, Pumpernick's restaurant, to name a few.The shops prospered and became a cultural staple in Cote St.Luc.It was a place not only for shopping, but for bumping into friends and chatting over an espresso and a croissant.Changes took place over the years. When Steinberg's clientele was beginning to redirect its loyalty to Warsaw, Steinberg did not renew Warsaw's lease so the latter had to vacate the premises after only a year, to be replaced by Canadian Tire. Then the back middle entrance was transformed into a mini-playground and a food court, followed by the demise of Miracle Mart (to be replaced by Lupton Duvall, later Kaplan Duval). And Kaplan Duval was the most prestigious place to shop (bridal registry, gifts, etc.).Recently, 1 went to Bureau en Gros and strolled down memory lane. The mall was like a ghost town, except 1GA, Pharmaprix and an SAQ.Passing through what used to be Kaplan Duval, 1 was saddened by the lack of clients, messy merchandise display synonymous to a fire sale, and dirty washroom.Where have gone the days when one could hardly move an inch through the store and wait half an hour at the cash register? What happened? With all the beautiful occupied condos around, where are people shopping?Gabriella Namian Sherbrooke Street A granted wish To the editor: 1 refer to Murray Levine's letter in the Examiner on Thursday, April 3.In his letter he
