Trent says he may climb ack into the saddle and charge into the municipal fray once again, this time to lead Westmount out of a difficult and divisive period in its history. But though recent reports have implied that Trent's return to public life is a done deal, he carefully maintains that he has yet to make up his mind and is currently testing the waters by speaking to members of the Westmount community. He won't run for mayor, he says, unless he has a solid group of councillors in place to run with him.“A mayor is only as good as his council,” Trent said this week.“I'm in the process of building a team.I'll probably be making a formal announcement in September — but I'm reserving the right to say no until I'm confident that good people will be running with me.” Trent's announcement that he may run for mayor came shortly after last week's press conference at city hall when current Mayor Karin Marks said she will not seek re-election in November. With Westmount's city councillors currently divided on several issues — primarily the controversial arena/pool project — one of Trent's first priorities would be to restore solidarity within the ranks on that issue.“This is no mere comfort station we're building here,” he said of the huge arena project.“We're looking at $35 million — and the other unknown is how much the (provincial government) grant will be.” Despite the recent controversy raised by Councillor Patrick Martin's suggestion of building the arena on the Westmount Athletic Grounds behind Westmount High School.Trent maintains that he would not take a position on what is sure to be a key election issue.“I'd be there to listen, get all council on side, and make a decision,” he said.“The biggest project in Westmount’s history should not be the most divisive project in Westmount's history.” Forthcoming book tackles merger issues One of Trent’s-primary motivations for considering a political comeback is the book on municipal mergers he is currently writing.“1 spent the past three years living like a monk, writing this book — doing a fair amount of research — and it allowed me to reflect,” he says.“I've changed my views In certain areas.” The book, whose title Trent is not ready to divulge, 1s an academic, peer-reviewed work to be published in both English and French by McGill-Queen's University Press sometime next year. For this project, Trent has spent long hours in his makeshift study in his basement, surrounded by shelves of carefully catalogued archives consisting of press clippings and other works. From it emerged some new ideas, but on the whole, he says, his extensive research has only strengthened his long-held belief that municipal mergers don’t work. This can be seen in mega-Montreal, he says, simply by the fact that several problems that were supposed to be addressed by municipal mergers still exist — among them urban sprawl, transport and taxation, “One of the main messages in this book is that problems we are now living with were problems eight years ago.Nothing has changed.” the research for his forthcoming book on municipal mergers.les Pavages Spinelli inc.erving Westmount for over 15 years » Asphalt » Uni-Stone * Cement Work * General Work representing Westmount in the larger municipal bureaucracy.he has no current plans to get involved in the Montreal elections, also scheduled for Nov.1.But he says that the possibility of Louis Harel becoming the next mayor of Montreal is something to be concerned about.“In my view, there is less than a 50 per cent chance of that happening,” he said.“But if it happens, she would be head honcho of the Agglomeration Council and chair of the Montreal Metropolitan Community.“She got us into this mess in the first placez she believes that municipal government should be more closed-door A meetin and inner workings of Westmount’s two main civic organizations — the elected city council and the volunteer Westmount Municipal Association — will tell you it’s no secret that both bodies have been experiencing inner turmoil for the past few months.Fair enough, for personal friction is inevitable when groups of people get together, but lately these conflicts have threatened to overshadow the good work undertaken by members. The most public example is the 3-6 split on city council over the arena/pool project, in which councillors Patrick Martin, Kathleen Duncan and Cynthia Lulham favour considering the Westmount Athletic Grounds as a possible alternative to the current arena site, while the mayor and five other councillors prefer to remain on track with the existing project — at least until all plans and funding options have been fully examined and discussed.Recently, two deep-throated insiders confirmed that some city councillors are barely on speaking terms — hardly the conditions for a healthy working relationship, and especially troubling when you consider that individually, each councillor has proven to be a valuable asset to this community.Unfortunately, the whole is no longer an accurate sum of its excellent parts. That's where Peter Trent comes in, and his tentative plan to lead a renewed, unified council this fall is not likely to fail. There is also good news over in the WMA camp, where a new president was unanimously elected on Monday. Now, with Jean-Pierre Picard (not Jean-Luc, all you Next Generation Trekkies) at the helm, many WMA board members are breathing casier and looking forward to a stable period of harmony as they tackle a full agenda of civic issues this fall.Mr.Picard is said to have the full confidence of the WMA board and, perhaps most significantly, the endorsement of both Stan Grossman and Henry Olders — the two primary adversaries in the WMA presidency debacle that marred the annual general meeting in June.It is one thing to operate without an official president, as the WMA has done ever since Dr.Olders stepped down, but it is even more difficult to function with blatant animosity among directors.Mr.Picard’s election as president could not have come at a better time for the WMA, and considering the current issues at hand, for Westmount itself.—There are Yeporis oF vad antacid on > round è SPORTS — City floats trial summer soccer program Jason Tushinski ext year, there is a chance that N Westmount’s mini soccer stars will be bending it like Beckham well into the summer.À test group was recently launched to gauge the interest of parents and players in running à soccer program for novice boys (ages 10 and under) in July and August, after the end of the traditional May-June season.“It seems strange to me that I have to drive my son to Villeray for summer soccer when there are great fields in Westmount that are sitting empty,” said Dr.Mark Roper, a Westmount physician and soccer dad who is spearheading the program.Dr.Roper cited other municipalities, such as NDG.that run both select and house leagues during the summer. The biggest obstacle to launching summer soccer is numbers.Àt the first call for players in July, about 30 showed up.Last Thursday, about 15 players were on hand. This could owe to the Westmount tradition of disappearing for the summer, whether to the cottage or on trips, or sending the kids to camp. But Dr.Roper is encouraged by the turnout and by the changing lifestyles of Westmounters.“Thirty or forty years ago, there were not many kids around during the summer,” he said.“But now, with double-income families and limited vacation time, it seems that there are more kids in town during the summer than before.” While Dr.Roper and a handful of parents have handled the summer soccer initiative, the City of Westmount has been assisting any way it can.“When parents ask for something, as a community organization we do our best to accommodate it,” said Andrew Maislin, a sports coordinator with the City’s Sports & Recreation Department.Maislin is providing logistical support by organizing email lists, reserving field times, and providing equipment.Whether the City actually offers the program next summer will depend on how well the current trial period goes. This fall, Maislin, Sports & Rec director Mike Deegan and Dr.Roper will evaluate the trial period as they gauge interest for next summer.“If there is enthusiasm for the program and we have the possibility to do it, I'm more than happy to put the time in,” Maislin said. The goal is to have both a competitive and house league team in Westmount next A à few young ; players and coaches have shown a keen interest in playing soccer throughout the summer.summer, with friendly matches occurring against other municipalities.“Just having a house league team would be an achievement,” said Dr.Roper.And of course, it would get Westmou future stars more time on the pitch. For those interested, there will be a Double A soccer game between Westmount and Pierrefonds, as well as a pick-up soccer game in Westmount Park on Thursday.Aug.20 from 6 to 8 p.m.345 Victoria, suite 508, Westmount (Qc H32 2N2 Éditorial & Sales Tel: (514) 4845600 Fax «Fax (5H) triathlon was an ordeal — but she made it Jessica Murphy Westmounter Jenny Donovan raised over $1,000 for the SPCA by competing in last month's Ironman triathlon in Lake Placid, completing a 3.9-km swim, a 185-km bike ride, and a full marathon in just under 17 gruelling hours. It took all of Donovan's strength, along with the support of family, to get her over the finish line in the problem-plagued race.“1 started to feel sick as soon as I got on the bike,” said Donovan.Featured in the July 2 Examiner, Donovan was competing in the triathlon to raise money to eradicate puppy mills.Training for the extreme endurance event would sometimes leave her shaky and ill, said the 36-year-old athlete, but this was the first time health problems had cropped up so early in a race.“My whole system jammed up; it was a struggle for me,” she admitted.Halfway through the bike course she was forced to spend 45 minutes in the medical tent before rejoining the race and was almost too exhausted to enjoy the reception each athlete receives when they finally make it to the finish line.“] pushed everyone out of the way to throw up,” she recalled with a laugh.“But they followed me with the medal.” Then she went for a second stint in the medical tent and four bags of 1V fluids to help her re-balance her electrolytes and rehydrate. But none of this is enough to discourage Donovan from doing it all over again: she’s set her sights on the 2011 Ironman and wants to raise funds once again for an animal shelter.Jenny Donovan (with her dog,
