tomorrow afternoon, Peter Trent will be acclaimed as the next mayor of Westmount.Following weeks of discussions, reports and speculation, the former mayor made it official on Monday.“This is not a drill,” Trent said in formally announcing his candidacy for mayor in the Nov.1 election.“I am willing to serve again as mayor of Westmount.I'll be filing my papers.” The Cote St.Antoine Road resident said he looks forward to returning to city hall.“I'm convinced that we're going to have a good council,” said Trent.“It'll be a balance of a new council and the former council. So I'm very happy with the potential composition. There's a lot of good quality candidates out there. That's what essentially occupied me over the last little while.I think we have a heterogeneous mixture of candidates who are running for council” Arena project requires careful handling He sees Westmount's pool/arena reconstruction project as one of the crucial issues.“It is potentially a rather divisive issue which is a shame because it should be something people can rally around. So I'm certainly going to try and work on that so that council will be completely behind the arena project, and of course all the citizenry to the extent possible. It’s going to require very careful handling because of the diversity of opinion out there as to what we should do.So I'm confident that we can get council behind a project and the citizens, too.“Of course, there is a very tight timeline because of the grant, so were in a sort of scheduling straightjacket. We have to have the project completed by March 2011.So it’s going to be a real challenge. And of course, there's the question of money. Thanks to (Mayor) Karin (Marks), we've managed to arrange for a very substantial Bank foils fraud scheme Jessica Murphy Local Bank of Montreal employees used some quick thinking and a bit of good luck to foil a would-be fraudster who was trying to cash a large, phoney cheque.“The guy walked into the BMO bank with a $69.000 cheque, which belonged to a company that worked with the bank,” Station 12 constable Alin Diallo said of the Sept.16 incident.C The bank teller asked permission to cash the cheque, but the size of the transaction raised a red flag for the bank supervisor. She called the company to verify the validity of the cheque.“But while she was on the phone, the company owner — by chance — walked into the bank,”-said Diallo. He confirmed the cheque was indeed counterfeit. As a discreet call to police was made, the suspect was cooling his heels in the bank lobby. He waited around until Station 12 police showed up to arrest him.He was charged with cheque fraud. The suspect may also have been cut short by forced fusion Former — and most likely future — Mayor Peter Trent with the City of Montreal, Westmount total debt was around $10 million. It is now approaching $40 million, largely because of fiscal obligations imposed by Quebec. The arena project, for which Westmount will be paying about half, will be adding to the number.“I have a real concern about the amount of debt that we're taking on and the inevitable translation of this debt into increased taxes,” he says.“Westmount is running the risk of ultimately not being affordable for families unless they are extremely wealthy.“I think that would be a real shame, because one of the beauties of Westmount is that we have people, perhaps not from all financial means, but certainly we have a great variety of different families of different means. And as taxes keep climbing up it means that the more normal family, à family of modest means, may not be able to live in this community.1 think that would be an huge loss.“So the question of keeping the lid on taxes is not just a question of protecting the well-off.It’s a question of protecting the great diversity of families that we have in Westmount.” If elected, Trent promises to be mindful of the Agglomeration Council, which could end up being presided by mayoral candidate Louise Harel — the PQ minister who launched the mergers — if she wins the City of Montreal election.I € 600: "1 quid “epsiny J (UOIISUTIUPXIJUTIOUIISOM MMM NH 4 Thursday, October 1°, 2009 www.westmountexaminer.com OPINION ° d | Tongue-tied! ormer Parti Québécois Minister F and municipal merger champion Louise Harel is determined to be the next mayor of mega-Montreal.And to make sure we all know it, her face is everywhere, from newspaper ads to the sides of city busses. But does she have the right attitude, or is that negative, xenophobic cloud that hung over her provincial party for years still following her around?Last week, the latter was clearly in evidence. The much-publicized plan to have Montreal’s three main mayoral candidates face off in an English-language television debate was scuttled when Harel backed out, citing her inability to adequately express herself in English. This announcement no doubt elicited whoops of joy across the western half of the island, as such an admission is tantamount to conceding defeat. No one in their right mind would vote for a mayoral candidate who admits she is unable to properly represent her city on the national and international stage — which, like it or not, for better or worse, means speaking English.Despite a litany of faults that would eventually evoke bitter consequences, former mayor Pierre Bourque was forever travelling abroad to promote Montreal as a world- class cosmopolitan — speaking in English or French as the situation required.Much the same can be said for current Mayor Tremblay, who is fully bilingual and, all other issues aside, has no trouble communicating with other mayors across North America. The most irritating aspect of this whole story is that Louise Harel can speak English.Okay, she’s no William E.Buckley, but she 1s an intelligent, worldly woman whose English is as good or better than many local Anglos’ French, and she makes herself perfectly understood. Her backing out of the TV debate on language grounds has instead raised questions of her sovereignist past, and smacks of that old PQ-viunted rule that no one in Quebec should have to speak English if they don't feel like it a negative, outdated attitude that has no place in a major city's municipal politics. For at least two generations now, anyone seeking a job in Montreal has been required to be bilingual.Likewise, the city’s mayor should be able to switch back and forth between the languages of its citizens without fear or resentment. The new plans! expertise led to his becoming one of Montreal’s better known radio @ cides and newspaper columnists, ied last week of complications from pneumonia following a long struggle with cancer.Robertson, 65, was a long-time resident of Burton Avenue. He served on city council from 1987 to 1991.He started writing his well-known gardening column for The Gazette in 1981.At one time, he was also the owner of a hydroponic gardening supplies store. His last column was published on Sept.19.In 1990, he joined CBC Radio in Montreal where he became a researcher, writer, broadcaster and traffic reporter. It was also there that he acquired a wider reputation as an expert gardener.Robertson was the author of two books on gardening: Tips on Organic Gardening in 2007, and Tips on Container Gardening the following year.Robertson helped found and was the first president of the Westmount Horticultural Society. He also served as president of the Westmount Municipal Association.Robertson's work at the CBC led to his representing the broadcaster during certain community events staged in Westmount, including annual public readings at Victoria Hall of Dickens's A Christmas Carol, in which he performed in full costume.Born in Bournemouth, England, Robertson came to Canada in 1964.After arriving in Montreal, he worked in the city’s fashion industry for more than 10 years, deciding after this to open a gardening store. He found out 15 years ago that he was suffering from non-Hodgins lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph nodes.Although the disease initially went into remission, it was only for a few years, following which he underwent a bone marrow transplant. His health declined in recent years.Councillor George Bowser, who was elected to city council four years.ago, says he sought out Robertson for advice prior to running.“He was always very practically helpful and also one of the best chairpersons I've ever seen,” he said.“Always full of good humour and practical advice.| shall miss him.” Summit Park legacy When first elected a member of city council, former Westmount mayor Peter Trent served alongside Robertson, who was in charge of the Architecture and Planning Commission. It was a dossier Trent previously managed, before taking on responsibility for finance.“The real legacy Stuart gave Westmount was his decision to upgrade Summit Park,” said Trent.“Summit Park had been neglected for the last 50 years since Westmount acquired it from McGill in the 1940s.Stuart made it his job to ensure that Summit Park was rehabilitated and that a lot of the erosion that had taken place was fixed. So he essentially rejuvenated Summit Park, for which we should be eternally grateful.” Robertson is survived by his wife, Donna, and his 22-year-old son, Jeremy, as well as his parents, Joan and Joan Robertson, and his brother-in-law, John Banks.A funeral service was held last Saturday at Westmount Park United Church. When Asher Adler sold Java U,
