Southern States felt that slavery must be preserved, that the culture of the South depended of it.Today some white people feel that the segregation of white and black must be maintained. It has become a barrier between them and the Father of all men.and the sad part is that they cannot see the barrier. Those are racial barriers, but for the individual Christian the social and ecomomic and cultural barriers are quite as important and sinful.C.S.Lewis illustrates it in Screw- tape Letters in which the senior devil Screwtape warns his understudy Wormwood to take advantage of all these differences, so that man may not even want to love his neighbor as himself. If we are to take any advantage of Lent and what it offers to us those barriers , must go.| St.Luke speaks of riches as one of the weeds, and there is no doubt that Our Lord considered wealth in itself as a danger: ‘How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God !"’ It was not a condemnation of wealth but a warning to be wary about it.St.Mark reports the saying a little differently : he speaks of the deceitfulness of riches.Men tend to depend on wealth, either if they have it or if they lack it.It gives a false security.“‘I will pull down my barns, and build greater .and I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease,” (LK.12,18).Riches had deceived him and that night his soul was required of him.We cannot buy salvation, It is not only the wealth which we possess that is a danger to us, but even the lusts or desires of other things choke the Word.No matter how poor I may be I can set my heart so ardently on material things that nothing else counts, It is a very interesting thing that it is only in the Jewish-Christian tradition that there is a Commandment directed against covetousness. All the other Commandments can be parallelled in the ancient codes of law, but the Old Testament alone has ‘‘Thou shalt not covet.’ It is the ‘‘hedge of the law.” Your neighbor has certain things which he treasures — his life, his wife, his goods and his reputation. Each one is guarded by a law, but the last Commandment says, Thou shalt not even covet those things that belong to your neighbor. So when we examine ourselves in the light of the Commandments we might begin with the last one and clear
