independently of private schools. They have opened the College of Air Training, designed to provide Britain with airline pilots of the future.English airlines, as was the case with Canadian lines, previously drew their top qualified pilots from the Air Force. This supply is drying up as the RCAF, in particular, seems to be shrinking, pilots do less flying.and many stay in the service longer than before. The English college will graduate 100 pilots a year, 50 for BOAC and 50 for BEA.The course lasts for two years and is open to cream-of-the-crop 18- vear-olds.The course costs about $15,000 per student, but each boy must only pay from his own pocket about $1500 for lodgings, uniforms and books.A graduate starts s junior second officer at about $3,000 per year, but this can go up to $15,000 or more as he becomes more advanced.Retirement age is 55.The English college is sponsored jointly by the Government, BOAC and BEA.Would it not be a good idea ‘or tbe Canadian government, TCA PUPP PSSIS SSS SUB PIBSISUSS BUNS SRB SSSR 1 mentioned recently that the high cost of pilots training themselves to levels accepted by airlines, plus the fact that many good pilots are out of work, will bought 11 CF-100s in flying condition. The question, asked in the House of Commons last Thursday, was answered by Hon.D.S.Harkness, - Minister of Natio.al Defence, who said the dealer did, in fact, have the aircraft, but they were scrap only.He said all engines, instruments and hydraulice had been ! removed, leaving nothing but 220,000 pounds of scrap.Further, he pointed out, it would take about $200,000 to put one of the heaps in flying condition.Hon.Hurley then said that tenders were called for by Crown Assets and four bids were received.Price of the 11 relics was not disclosed, nor the location of the place from which the aircraft came.* * » Well, as 1 predicted last year, Nordair got the Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston, Oshawa, Toronto, Windsor run which has been: be- (Continued en page annual in-service inspection this week.checking the homes and businesses of Westinount for fire hazards and explaining fire prevention methods to householders and occupants. This service will continue from now until October 9 — the anniversary of the kicking over of the lamp by Mrs.O'Leary's cow which allegedly started the famed Chicago fire, and the end of Fire Prevention week.Police and Fire Chief Ed Harper expects to cover every building in West.mount.T h e inspection, which supplements the year- in-year-out inspection duties of Lieutenant Motard and Inspector Schture, will be conducted on clear days only from | to 4.30 p.m.weekdays by uniformed firemen driving fire department apparatus — hose wagon, ladder truck and salvage truck. This free and unique service is one which does not interfere with regular firemen duties. That is why it is called in-service.The fire apparatus is equipped so that pressing a button at the Fire Department activates the horns of the vehicles. When the horns go off the firemen on inspection call in to the station by radio and receive directions regarding any emergency requiring their presence. The firemen find that electrical overfusing is the chief fire hazard. When people overload their electrical circuits they do not realize the wiring in the walls can get red hot and start a fire.Co-operation with the firemen when they knock at your door is advisable. It may be the knock that saves you from death by burning or your property from destruction.THEY SAY YOU SAY Westmount tenant wants rent control Sir: —Why is the City Council vf the City of Westmount going to petition the Quebec legislature to abolish rent controls in the City of Westmount? Why doesn’t the Council ask the tenants who pay rent to greedy landlords if they, the tenants, want controls abolished?.The Westmount Municipal Association is the Tammany Hall of Westmount and is responsible for the selection of the Mayor and the Council, It would be a very excellent idea for the Westmount Municipal Association and their selected puppets to remember that there are many, many more tenant voters than there arc landlord voters.James Adams, P.O.Box 688, ee.Montreal, Quebec.Favors tenants only decide rent control Sir: —I would like to know why the Westmount Council has decided to seck the termination of rent control, as well as what authority entitles them to do so without a prior city-wide vote by those concerned, namely the tenants. The Councillors voted unanimously among themselves to withdraw from application of the Rentals Act.However it is felt that they do not speak for all tenants residing in Westmount. It is hard to believe that termination of rent controls is the wholehearted deci- siom or wish of the tenants.Prior to rent controls, landlords had their day of exploitation. The placing of controls on rents (particularly on older dwellings), has been the tenant's only saving grace. As a Westmount resident 1 urge that a vote be takem whereby tenants (property owners excluded) may decide for or against termination of rent control before the matter goes any further. The decision lies in the hands of the tenants, nol in those of the councillors and landlords.“Tenant'’ E-N a § IE campaign to make men fuss like women about their clothes has evidentiy frightened the councillor who said that there is no harm in dustmen looking smart and clean, but that to overdo it is absurd. There is a dustman in Norfolk who comes to his work in a curly-brimmed bowler and carrying a neatly rolled umbrella with a spik>d ferrule for spearing oddments of refuse.Beachcomber “0 memes True rest is not that of torpor, but that of harmony .not resting from duty, but finding rest in it.— Frederick William Robertson Westmount's whiskey, to live with my uncle Robert.1 worked os the farm with my uncle until 1 was about 15.Then I went back to London." ‘I don't even remember what grade 1 went through. That shows how little schooling I had.We walked two miles to school in Glen Ness and got in the habit of going by way of the apple orchard and stealing apples.” “One thing that has made me work at this job all this time is that 1 have never had any schooling.I have had a pretty good time but I have had to work hard because of that.I tell these boys here at the YMCA—I really drum it into them—be sure and stick to your school.By the time I realized the importance of school 1 had a family and couldn't just drop everything and change.” “What I've learned I've had to pick up by myself.I will say 1 did know enough so when 1 first came here the physical director and 1 were able to keep this place going without a secretary for a while.” “First 1 worked as a dispatcher on the London-Brighton Railway for five years. Then I went to work for the South Metropolitan Tramway Company for another five on the doubledecker streetcars.” “In 1907, 1 married Charlotte Louise after 1 started there that they opened up this place. They had two fellows here before me but they didn't stick it.” “It wasn't an easy job.Whenever we had a storm it would get flooded in the basement. One August it flooded five times. That situation was relieved when they put the new sewerage in down in the Glen.” “I've seen this place grow up.They had board sidewalks when I first came here.I've watched Westmount gradually build up into cement sidewalks.” “I started working here at the YMCA in March of 1912.The place opened Saturday, the fourth of May.400 to 500 people came to watch the swimming and stayed for tea put on by the Ladies’ Committee.‘We had a let of tremble with two brand new big Ax- minster rugs en the floor eut there in the lobby.Downstairs, outside the swimming pool, the terrazo floor hadn't pre- perly set yet. When the people watching the swimming walked with their wet feet acress the tile and upstairs they tracked red acress the rugs and ruined them completely. We took them up and sent them to the cleaners and some of the red came out but (he rugs were spoilt.” “I remember Clarence Dut- tom 1 wouldn't be surprised if he were first in the pool that day, like he claims. He came in bere pretty regularly until he got tied wp ever in Vie Hall.” “In those days we had 00 kids on the gym floor and then in swimming afterward. We are lucky to get a denen today. The schools did net have gym classes like they de today.“ her one 1 remember is R.N.Watt.He's pretty high up in the Montreal Transport Company now.” “Ernie and Al Mills of West- mount Realties used to live here until they got married.I remember they both studied a lot.” “Then there was Alec Tinker, with the textile mills at Hunt- ingdon, and a fellow by the pame of Dodwin with the fur department at Henry Morgan. They both lived in room 13.We are connected in a family way.Tinker and Dodwin married the Bronstetter sisters and my daughter married the brother.” “Bug Andrews, who used to live on the corner of Lansdowne avenue and Sherbrooke street was one of the early ones.” He got up and let a husky young fellow into the swimming area.‘That was Bailey, one of the Alouettes. He comes here all the time to exercise.’ “I was talking about the early days. The first director here until the first world war broke out was T.Hicks Miller.A lot of people will remember him.” “My first assistant here with me was W.Munro.He was with me a couple of years. Then he went to work on the railroad helping to build a tunnel through the mountain as an electrician.” “There were two brothers, Stan and Bob, whe are with Marcel Real Estate.I can’t think of their last name. They used to take a lot of exercising here.As time went on they were in the Wise Men’s Club.” “You know the Fossils Club eriginated here in Westmount. It was just a bunch of young fellows who got together and put on shews over im Victoria Hall. They broke up when they went overseas. When they came back they got other quarters downtown.” “The YMCA is not used as much by younger people as it was in the old days.It is used by the older people. They just have dances here once in a while, They used to have them all the time during the war for the soldiers and sailors. When the war was over it all fell through.” “Yes, they have a good turnout for the hobby show, though not like it used to be.Young people aren't so much interested in hobbies as they used to be.They are more out for a good time.” 1 asked where he lived when he came to Montreal.“We, my wife, her little sister, Daisy, who came with us, and our daughter all stayed for a few nights with a friend. Then 1 took over a boarding house on Mackay street for a while. It didn’t pay off but it was alright until I got settled. Then 1 moved to Sussex avenue and took care of an apartment building owned by Mr.Bailey, a real estate broker.” “] stayed at Sussex avenue for 27% years. Then I moved te 216 Redfern avenue and have lived there ever since, for 22 years.” “Yes, we are right across the street from the Reader's Digest building. There have been a lot of changes in that neighborhood. Before they put the new school up we could watch the Alouettes
