public relations By Margaret Aitken EONARD Knott of 346 Olivier 4 avenue, Westmount has been in that somewhat nebulous profession known as public relations for 25 years. He has written several books on the subject but his latest is by far the most provocative and penetrating — Plain Talk About Public Relations, published by McClelland & Stewart.Of course he does not say public relations is nebulous.Nor is it, as some, some people think, merely good manners. It is, according to this authority, “the most discussed and least understood of all business activities.” In a sentence, to have good PR is to have a good reputation.Mr.Knott has quite a few unkind things to say about business, which is rather like biting the hand that feeds PR.He points out that business is its own worst enemy.(“More than half the people in the world are opposed to business as it is conducted under the free enterprise system in North America and Western Europe.”) What has caused this?Shady practices, false advertising, contempt for ordinary people, lack of community spirit and immorality.Code of ethics “An enforceable code of ethics for business would help reassure a doubting public.” Lawyers and doctors have cleaned up their professions with strong, self-enforced rules. Why not business?Mr.Knott's indictment does not cover every business, of course but, like the old saying, one rotten apple in the barrel can, taint all the others.1 have a theory that business could do a lot for its PR in the next six years, prior to our 100th annjversary in 1967.Business might establish hundreds of bursaries and scholarships — really worthwhile ones that would take young people through their higher education or trade school training.Another means could be lasting emergency call to a home or bullding there is an invalid or clderly per son living on the premises.Chief Ed Harper.in an exclusive interview with The Examiner, yesterday, said the department always made a search of any building “But it is a harrowing experience not knowing whether or not there is an invalid living there.” he said. The Chief pointed out that the primary concern of the fire department was to save lives.and the stickers will dssist greatly as they have done in other cities throughout Canada. These unobtrusive stickers are as to facilitate fire fighting supplied five yet they continue to be excited by them.Even a wrinkled glove lying on a chair will cause sniggers and whispered comments.Indeed, younger Snarfs have been known to stage ‘‘glove raids” on feminine dormitories. It is difficult to move down the main street of any Snarf settlement without encountering elbow symbols on every side; yet the sight of a quarter inch of naked elbow protruding from a worn glove will cause a near panic and give rise to write- ups in the newspapers.A bizarre by-product of this elbow-directed society, Prof.Grebe informs me, is the grotesque anatomical distortions it has caused.Women with enlarged elbow bones or particularly hefty forearms are much in demand, especially as entertainers.Prof.Grebe interviewed several of these pathetic creatures who, by virtue of muscle exercises and even surgical operation, had managed to increase the size of their elbows to the point where it made them difficult to walk upright or perform simple feats of manual dexterity. To a woman he found them entirely happy with their strange lot perhaps because they are looked on both by men and other women as near-god- desses. Some of them, he reports, have to carry their arms in special slings for support, but this seems to make them all the more desirable. Some years ago, certain women — disgraced in the eyes of their parents and friends by the physical accident of an un- der-developed elbow — began to use padded gloves. These, the professor says, have now become an important commercial by-product of Snarf society and are, indeed, advertised openly.Another curious aspect of the AOROSS à Smashing Mohans- Conferences med's goal One € Two-legged Louisiane 41, Cook’s ereek 12.Pan Dessert 18.Thin Girl's name 34.Pronoun Skillful) 15.Minus Game of 36.Gambler's iE Ee Rumpus 2e.an.bird fenced Rescuer 8.Spoken 2 Prescription x i HEE Snarf elbow-mania is the rise of the so-called ‘Health Groups’ who insist that the enforced draping of the lower arm is unhealthy and physically undesirable. These people meet in secluded spots — private farms, beaches and forest glades — where they effect a strange costume consisting of an all- encompassing wool cloak which covers the wearer from head to foot, bul leaves the arms entirely nude from the elbow down. Many attempts have been made to prevent these societies from meeting, but the fact that Health is the key motive has protected them from legal action. Many publish Health Magazines showing pictures of the undraped elbow and these have a wide sale since the male Snarfs, apparently, are extreme- Jy interested in health.Prof.Grebe has done considerable historical research into the Snarf past and it is his belief that there was a time when the very word ‘elbow’ was taboo in polite society. This is no longer the case since it is used in books, plays and theatre advertising and always gets a laugh when employed by a stand-up comedian in a joke. The taboo still generally holds, however, for words dealing with the concealed parts of the lower arm, especially the fingers. These are rarely if ever mentioned in public either by name or inference.A storm of protest was engendered recently with the publication of a new book of considerable literary quality because it dared to employ the five-letter word ‘thumb’ — a term heretofore confined entirely to scrawls on back fences and washroom walls. The fact that this book has been distributed, however, indicates a breaking down of traditional Snarf taboos.Indeed, Prof.Grebe says he has reason to believe that the sight of a naked elbow in the Upper Amazon may soon become almost as familiar as, say, the sight of a naked bosom in our own culture, dnd TRG ENS JE I RACH Qi] -T UA ONTTE 3 ha [AZ] Ih (XR nn (var.) clearest indication that the teach.! ing staff is doing its job extremely well.Their past successes have not been achieved by mere lip service to their jobs but by a genuine interest in their students’ and de | and in their own ability and determination to impart knowledge to their students. The other side of the coin, of course, is that in any society people have to be able to use their knowledge. It is in this area that the training Westmount students can get by full participation in the school’s extracurricular activities and physical programme ars so valuable. In fact, the Westmount Board regards an extracuricular programme as an essential part of education, despite the fact that it does not show directly when high school leaving examinations are written. This is an area where the truly dedicated teacher shows his mettle because his effort is over and above his day-to-day work and often in areas in which the teacher is not formafly trained. One of the problems is administering the previous setup in West- mount where a Junior High School ool Board and a Senior High School were in separate buildings was the distribution of this sort of effort fairly among the various members of the staff, In the new school it is believed that the burden will be more equitably shared and with their usual co-operation teachers will provide leadership in the field of athletic and extracurricular activities which will ensure the continuance Expensive French A special feature at the new Westmount School is a French language room equipped with recording and playback devices, There are 35 units in the room which cost between $400 and $500 each.“Expensive, but well worth $17.500 .“commented a representative of the manufacturers.of this portion of the school programme at the present or even higher levels.Hand S Association | The Home and School Association was formed in April 1940 and has been almost continuously active since then. Its main objects are to bring parents and teachers closer together.to give parents a better ting its 25th anniversary and can The Westmount Examiner, Fridey, October 27, 1961 11 Westmount High opens The Hoa.George C.Marler.PC (right) chats with A.Reid Tilley.Chairman of (he School Commissieaers, prior to the official opening, last Old Boys’ Association Throughout the years, there has been a spirit at W.H.S.which has been second to none.Traditions and character have carried the school to many glories and undoubtedly benefited its graduates. The Association was formed in 1936 by Brig.-Gen.J.Aird Nesbitt the Cote St.and the late H.H.‘Worsfold.Antoine senior Latin teacher.so that , graduates could maintain an in- Academy terest in one another.the school The and its staff. It is open to all who have attended or taught at West- ed in 1873 in a rented frame house mount High.at the corner of Clarke and Cote Activities have been many and St.Antuine road.varied.During World War II , 2, cigarettes were sent overseas to!
