Wasserman of 513 Grosvenor avenue.Mr.Mellon said in à statement to the police that he thought the damage was necligible and proceeded on his way to an appointment. The following day - thinking an overnight delay would do no harm, he phoned Westmount police and told them he was the third party in the accident. He appeared in court earlier, and was charged formally with the responsibility. It was at that time, however, set over until last Wednesday. When the story was told, the jude smd he'd like to hear a report from the other people ne.volved in the mishap. There was an estimated $250 damage done to the Capper ve hicle, according to police reports, but negligible damage to the Was.serman car.The case has been set over to Wednesday.April 4.CMP man hits public apathy Page 5 Irresponsible public blamed for crime wave Page 5 avy team wins rifle tournament .—_ cesse Page 7 Next week’s weather By ERIC NEAL April 1 to 7 Gusty winds and powder snow, then bright and relatively mild with morning mists or fog and cold nights.Light snow or showers, even thunder for some districts. This is a stormy, partial thaw week; temperature range 15 - 45°F, Sunny intervals with cold showers and more soft snom an the middle of the week.Valley fogs in all the south, near blizzard conditions in the north and the Maritimes.Sugaring-off in full swing. The log drive starts; ‘break-up’ is beginning and so are the floods, Bright and pleasant but cool for the end of the week with suany periods, gusty winds and flurries. © Asbestos & Metal Siding Commercial - Industrial Residential Maintenance end Repoirs on AN Types of Buildings | Leo Falardcau PLUMBING © HEATING © ROORMNG SHEET METAL WORK © GAS HEATERS 3955 St.James Street West Inspection & Estimates on Request WE.5-2595 WE.3-2432 we ee ee A A AA AA We WY Ee YY WY TTY TTT DY YY WW TT OOO eS A SR BR RR RR J AR REAR ES EES SAAS SA SEA A SA AALS ALAA SA AA A SE A A A AA SA SAAS AAA _SA_S_A SA A A 0 _S_A_S_A_S_S_S_5_A_0 S_% Wee A te ee AA A AAA A eT YY Yr TT ed TT TT TT TTT ST WT RT TE A BRIGHTER DAY EVERY DAY WITH “THE KIRBY DERBY“ THE “JOHN WILSON SHOW” 10 AM.- 2 P.M.DAILY Between you and me Warm Taiwan hospitality By Margaret Aitken Taiwan: In all my experience as a traveller, I have never known such hospitality as that bestowed upon me by the Chinese in this outpost of freedom called Formosa.1t is not the kind of hospitality we accord visitors — i.e., lavish food and cocktail parties. It is a giving of individual time and attention. But let me start at the beginning.Upon arrival at Taipei, capital of Taiwan, 1 was met by fwo gentlemen from the Foreign Office, I.Lin Wu, second secretary and Mih Sih-Tshoong, deputy director of protocol.Mr.Wu was introduced as my guide and interpreter throughout the visit. The two gentlemen whisked me through customs to a waiting black limousine, with a smiling, bowing young driver. But it was not the human courtesy that touched me so much as the fact that attached to the car mudguards were two flags — the Chinese and the Union Jack.Later, when we arrived at the Grand Hotel, 1 was again greeted with sight of the two flags flying on either side of the porte cochere.I wished my colleagues in the House of Commons — those who keep crying for a Canadian flag, a distinctive Canadian flag — could experience the thrill of | seeing the beautiful Red Ensign raised in one's honor 10.000 miles from home.! Most-listened-to statiom im your area by actual survey.May 1 help you?’ Suddenly, it came to Grebe that commercial time could also be sold on telephone calls.A pilot project was instantly set up in 26 selected factories, business offices and public institutions and was enormously successful. The first test call is also on tape at the Institute : X-word 2.Move on ground, as a plane 8.Tooth discomfort 4.Beverage 8.Burst forth 6.Just dogs engine fumes 7.Close to 8.Article 0.Tyrant of 10.Emerald 18.Harry 14, Bar, flakes Lauder’s or powder, “man” eg.19.To hide 19.Mixes away (sl.) 20.Suspends 21.Top of 21, Yellow foot arch bugle 24.Help in wrongdo 28.Flat 29.Limbless reptile 30.Three- banded armadillo 81.Stubborn 82.‘Red — at sunset” $4.Habitual drunkard 87.Bulgarian coin 38.Pronoun 1.Condition ©.“Remember the —" 11.Trained- 17.Kitty, in games SWITCHBOARD.Grableigh Tool & Die .Good morning' And it will be a good morning if you start the day right with Vita- Whip, nature's own energizing cream.CALLER : Give me Mr.Grab- leigh, please, SWITCHBOARD : 1 will connect you with his secretary. But if you really want to make connections, don’t forget the new all-purpose Groom strengthens hair follicles while giving your scalp new lustre .SECRETARY : Mr.Grableigh's office. Can I help you — by recommending Whiff, the safe, all- purpose decongestant tablet ?CALLER : Give me GG.It's rush.SECRETARY : I'm sorry, Mr.Grableigh is not available. But Glare, the amazing hand lotion that shines like varnish is always available at leading drug and department stores.Although one or two callers complained about delays, especially those phoning hospital emergency wards, most people quickly became used to phone commercials.Grebe then moved swiftly to sell commercials on long-dis- tance calls. As he pointed out to the telephone companies, they had the perfect ‘‘captive audience’ and there could be no argument about the ratings, It soon became standard for anybody placing a long- distance call to receive two commercial messages before being connected with his party.Grebe’s latest move is to have the commercial time increased by 30 seconds on person-to-per- son calls, but so far the Board of Transport Commissioners has not approved the request.Advertising has its place, they agree, but they don’t think it should take precedence over public service. In a democracy this is, of course, an arguable point.A good many people now think that the bureaucrats are again trying to deny us our basic freedoms.puzzle Foy Doze F689 ONDOR .Bel.LIVIA TROL ELLY glum [SEDSELNVES resort HISMRAS [TRE LIOIS 25.Valise OMS os 26.Aug- SVN IRA SYA ment 156 a[3[T[S IND 27.Man's HSIVILS NIOTW, © 3 nick- 1135 ET name SELLE EN 20.Cross.BNUNIWISLLIIVLIC] word puzzle 36.So.Amer, fans monkey 31.To eat 38.Faction sparingly 39.Pile 33.“Alas and 40.Blunders —" 43.Former $4.Lath monetary 35.Solemn unit (Lat.) promise 48.Athome 38 [39 [do PE [MU URS ———— RCMP officer: Irresponsibility crime wave cause A hard-hitting speech Wednesday put the blame for present crime growth on “those who believe prevention and detection of crime is the sole responsibility of the law.and those who wilfully impede law and order for political, social or personal reasons.” The speaker was Superintendent R.J.Bélec of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.who addressed the Westmount Rotary Club at Victoria Hall Wednesday.Superfintendent Bélec's talk was on the subject of police public relations.“These attitudes,” said the superintendent.” can be very dangerous because in the ceaseless battle against disorder and crime, the police are greatly outnumbered by those of criminal tendencies who would not be slow in seizing any tactical advantage afforded by the absence of public support or its withdrawal in any degree.” The superintendent's topic has been of prime interest even as KENDWOOD'S EXECUTIVE RE -
