comic teeth and other necessary disguises, ready for her next assignment.\u201cWhat\u2019Il it be today, chief?\u201d she asked crisply, saluting and clicking her heels in the Prussian style, which we have lately adopted.The kindly, grizzled columnist laid his rough hand on the eager child's slim shoulder.\u201cOperative 67,\u201d he said, \u201cI am about to hand you your most difficult assignment.If you refuse it I will not think ill of you.This is a purely voluntary matter.If you do not choose to accept it there will be no questions asked.\u201d \u2018But that's child's play, chief,\u2019\u2019 replied the naive Operative.\u201cI will merely write a letter to an encyclopaedia company and get a price list.\u201d And she typed out the following letter to the Encyclopaedia Americana: Dear Sir: 1 am interested in buying a set of your emcyclo- paedia.1 do not want a salesman lo call on me.As | intend to pay cash.would you please forward me your price list for the set of books.The columnist sighed a little.Obviously, Operative 67 would have to learn the hard way.And she did.The Encyclopaedia Americana did not send her a price list by returm mail.Instead, the Operative received a phone call from a Mr.Scott, who announced that he wasn\u2019t a salesman: \u201c1 just work in the office.\u201d \u201cWe're just getting the program under way,\u201d began Mr.Scott, enthusiastically, and then he started to deliver the standard Encyclopaedia Americana sales pitch which actually got under vay many, many years ago.What's the price the Operative asked, breaking in.Well, said Mr.Scott, he'd have to talk that over with the office.Couldn't they send a man around to \u2018explain the program?\u201d The Operative said she didn\u2019t want any explanations.Just the price, please.Well, Mr.Scott said.actually there were several prices and of course.\u2018a great deal of equipment.\u201d Ne equipment, please The Operative explained that the letter meant what it said.She didn\u2019t want any \u2018\u2018equipment\u2019 (she had an impression of barbells and hand grips at this point).She just wanted an encyclopaedia.She said she couldn't understand why he wouldn't know the price.Well.said Mr.Scott, finally, \u201cit would be in the neighborhood of $400.\" This is a price?the Operative asked.What do you mean \u2018neighborhood?\u2019 1s that your cheapest set or your most expensive or what?Can't you give me a firm price?Mr.Scott described it as the \u201csecond set.\u2019 The first set was \u2018\u2018around $600.\" Is 8 your cheapest?the Operative kept asking.Well, said Mr.Scott, bobbing and weaving nicely, there was \u2018\u2018other merchandise\u2019 involved.and Mr.Scott admitted that there were only two.He said The Operative asked him if there was more than two sets he would like to send someone around to explain.Don't bother, said the Operative.And she asked again: Is $400 your cheapest price?Yes, countered Mr.Scott, \u201cwith the other merchandise.\u201d What other merchandise?asked the Operative.Mr.Scott said there were other books.What books\u201d asked the Operative.Well, a dictionary .and a Bible.And then they might want to use her name in advertising.They might just want her to list five other people who would want a set.Mr.Scott implied that this would result in a real bargain rate for the Operative and, again, he pleaded to be allowed \u2018 send a man around to explain what kind of a deal they could make.\u201cLook,\u201d said the Operative, \u201cI'm not interested in all that.1 just want to know the price of a set.There's no use in sending a salesman around.\u201d Mr.Scott insisted he wasn\u2019t a salesman.In fact, he said, there was no sales staff.He just wanted someone to drop around and explain this special promotional scheme they had on now.But what's the price ?\u201cJust get me a price and cut out all the garble,\u201d said the Operative impatiently.But Mr.Scoit couldn't do that.He said he'd have to \u2018discuss it\u2019\u2019 and call back.It was two hours before he did so, Then, finally, he had a price.They would let her have the set for $249.50.But when another of my Operatives .No.112) phoned some time later and asked the price of a set of the Encyclopaedia Americana she was told, after some discussion, that it was $10 a book, or $300 for a set of 30.Meanwhile, Operative 67 wrote four other encyclopaedia companies identical letters, None sent her a complete price list; in fact, only on a EEE $i RRR TT I SAY The Operative paled slightly but stood her ground.\u201cOperative 67,\u201d the columnist went on, \u201cI want you to find out what an encyclopaedia costs.\u201d one answered in writing and that was P.F.Collier, who told her simply the price was $245.50.When Operative 112 phoned, however, she was told there was a \u2018\u2018special\u2019\u201d price of $369.50.(Salesmen at the door are quoting the \u2018\u2018regular\u2019\u2019 price at $450).However, this included a set of the Junior Classics and a Bible.Operative 112 couldn't find out what the Collier's cost was without these extras.There was no one in the office to tell her, nor was she ever able after a day of phone calls to find out.Not salesmen Two other companies, the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the American People\u2019s Encyclopaedia, phoned the Operative, They weren't salesmen, they said.One described himself as a \u2018\u2018manager\u2019\u2019; another a \u2018\u2018representative\u2019.The Op- eratvie was able, finally, to get some prices from them- but there didn't appear to be a price list as there is for most books.The Britannica then sent her a brochure, but this didn\u2019t list prices either.As for Operative 112, the Britannica flatly refuser to give her a price over the phone.The World Book Encyclopaedia did not call.Instead, a Mrs.Brigham knocked at Operative 67's door.She said she just happened to be passing by.Later, she confessed that she had been given the Operative's letter by her district supervisor; he thought perhaps the Operative didn\u2019t want a high-pressure salesman, but he was sure she would mind Mrs.Brigham.Mrs.Brigham then began to rattle through the World Book sales pitch.But what's the price?the Operative would ask from time to time, and Mrs.B.would say she had a few things to show first.It is pointless to go on.After a great deal of talk, the Operative finally did get a price ($154 for cash).Meanwhile, she\u2019s still getting calls from people who say they aren't salesmen.I am sending her away for a long rest.She
