the gay school social life throughout the vear may give way to bitter disappointment. Many fail because they did not apply themselves diligently to studies: few fail because of a lack of enough ability to make a passing grade.Unfortunately, the bitter disappointment may lead to a snap decision to leave school and seek employment. With less than high school standards, it can be safely assumed that the bulk of these drop-outs will, it at all.gain employment which will never bring to the fore inherent talent or ability. It would be much wiser for the student considering Jeaving school to stop and think about the future. The embarrassment of repeating one vear is not so bad; actually, it could, and should.serve to teach how to study, and to point up the necessity of just a little harder work next year.If many would do this, it would be suprising how many would eventually go on to university, and to greater things in business, and as good citizens in this complex world. In vears to come it is too late to have regrets.So.consider carefully before making a rash decision to drop out.w .on.8 +» - YOU SAY Gracious living now ‘a lost arf’ Sir: One of the real pleasures of living in upper Notre Dame de Grace is the daily opportunity afforded one to drive through Westmount on one's way into town.Spiralling income taxes.increased wages for domestic help and maintenance people have been blamed for the fust- growing trend towards life in smaller homes. But, regard less of the reasons behind this trend, the fact remains that today's generations are losing the art of gracious living. The homes of Westmount above The Boulevard are among the last bastions of gracious life.No “luxury” apartment buildings, which operate more as dormitories than as homes, are seen here, Colonades, elaborately sculptured entrances.architecture reminiscent of Southern Colonial.French Chateau and English country manors, as well as numerous examples of purely town house architec ture, offer us daily reminders of the skills of man now rarely used in the building of comfortable homes.Besides the homes along The Boulevard, of course.are others seen less often by the general public. There is another face to Westmount too— that of its blighted areas.rarely identified with the city's name.Would it be possible to see a weekly, front-page photograph showing the “Face of Westmount" as seen by its residents and, more particularly.its visitors?Summer is usually a slow time for news and would seem just right for a feature of this tvpe.1 feel it would be welcomed by both old and potential subscribers to your weekly.Terry Mcl.aughlia Editor's mot: Reader Mec- Laughlin has offered a good suggestion — and ik is being considered.mes Acting mayor Alderman |.S.Backler has been appointed Acting Mayor of the city for the months of May.June and July on a resolution proposed by Alderman T.A.Ouimet at Mon- La - A day night's meeting of the City Council.SAY No people do so much harm as those who go about doing good.— Mandell Creighton The high cost of money when you want to buy à car By Pierre Berton One thing is certain — interest rates seem to vary widely from car lot to car lot, from car to car and from person to person.About the only real rule that seems lo apply is that new cars are cheaper to finance than used cars.Generally speaking.my informal survey of leading new car lots showed that the rates were generally lower than they were for furniture and appliances, which you'll remember ran between 17 and 32 per cent.In the new car field the interest rates seem to run between 13 and 22 per cent.x * + In several cases my Operative 67 was told that the rates were as good as she couid get at the bank. When the payments were checked by an actuary.this didn’t turn out to be true, though in one or two cases the rate nudged the bank rate. You can get secured loans at a bank for between 5'z and 6 per cent and you can borrow money to buy a car at a little more than 11 per cent. The Mana Lu EMULE lowest car loan we found was at 123 per cent ‘a GMAC plan at West Hill Motors). This was an insured loan which may explain the difference.* * * On used cars, interest costs vary more widely. The worst example I've yet come across was that of a man in Aylmer, Ontario, who bought a six- year-old Pontiac from Nash & Bell Motors on an 18- month installment plan, financed through Associates Discount. His money cost him a little over 36 per cent per annum. This was in 1958 before the banks got actively into the business of car loans. However, in a more recent case, last summer, a Toronto man paid upwards of 32 per cent in interest charges on a five year old Mercury Sedan from Arby Motors Ltd.financed through Danforth Discount.Such charges are often made on the basis of a man’s credit rating; in the latter case the purchaser had borrowed the down payment from a finance company and LEN EE EA AE LTE RR Re 1 SAY Discussing the advantages of drinking like a gentleman, os the English do, Roger Pickelfdorf said the idea is to sip slowly oll evening, then say, "Well, I'll toddle up to bed now.” Sensible, but Roger feels it is a woste of time, a waste of liquor, and a waste of gentleman.cE X-Word Puzzle ACROSS 3.Duluth 1.Wilted ore 8.Head cook export 0.Singer 8.Secretary's —— Lanza lunch 10.Lounges (2 wds.) 12, Coral 4.Prudent island &.Hampers 18.Actor — 6.Biblical Welles mountain 14.Twisting 7.Otherwise 16, Japanese 8 — and outcast jetsam class 9.Manufac- 17.Half em ture 18.Hide away, 11.Sluggards 20.Siam river 19, One .ver 19.One's 21.To transport ’ charted 21, — Ber- On Joli] 23 Feed RIN: MORE .Free J = 24.In- el RT AL censed HS|ARCIRSR ME 28.Sait ANE 101010) ponds a ENC, 26.Office LR TETE Christ- A E C mas = K gifs 28.Sustained 33.Open space 31.Shifts of net 32.Bog- 35.A taunt ged 87.Lily-like down plant in 39.Stocking part so he had no real equity in his automobile. In both instances, it's significant that the purchasers couldn't keep up their payments and the cars were repossessed. The Salesman Gets A (Cut An even odder case, which I'd scarcely believe if 1 hadn't seen the contracts and payment books, involves a man who bought a two-year- old station wagon from Del Bodkin Motors in New Toronto. He made a substantial down payment and the contract shows his interest rate was only 14.4 per cent per annum. However, the Delta Acceptance payment book showed that monthly payments were four dollars a month higher than the contract showed. This brought his true rate of interest to 18.8 per cent per snnum. He couldn't handle these payments and so traded down to a cheaper car.On this his rate of interest was 29.1 per cent.+ * * In the automobile field the scales seem to be tipped against the man who wants to pay cash, just as they are tipped against the man who wants to pay off his loan at an earlier date than set.Recently a customer who had bought a new car at a true interest rate of 16.8 per cent through General Motors Acceptance Corporation, decided to pay it all off in the fifth month. The extra finance charges brought the cost of his loan to 25.3 per cent per annum. That's because there are certain fixed charges on these loans that can't be returned.* + It's well known in the auto industry that some of the profit on cars comes as a result of cutbacks from acceptance companies.Part of this cutback is passed along to the car salesmen on the floor which means that every man has a vested interest in talking his customers out of paying cash, I have a copy of a standard salesman’s agreement put out by Hogan Pontiac, which uses General Motors Acceptance Corporation. This agreement shows that every salesman gets a bonus for every car he finances through GMAC.On new cars this bonus starts at $10 per contract. If he sells more than 15 contracts he get $15 for every car he finances — and that payment is retroactive. No wonder salesmen find it attractive to boost the easy payment plan.(Some used car dealers, who charge about 30 per cent interest make their profits almost entirely from financing. They're really in the loan business.)
