Platter Matter Atlantic Jazz Abstractions.Composed by Gunther Schuller and Jim Hall, 1365.How does one approach a commentary on this disc, presenting as it does something really ultra contemporary in jazz form?The group of jazz instrumentalists comprising chiefly, alto sax, guitar, bass violins and cello, ‘presents four compositions leading off with ‘Abstractions’ which is just about that, its first half sounding like a disorganized jazz band rehearsal, dominated by Ornette Coleman on sax, warming up to the final section in something more of a definitive pattern, Jim Hall's ‘Piece For Guitar and Strings’ is tuneful and melodic with a background beat more in the modern sophisticated jazz style we are accustomed to.This mood follows through in Guther Schuller’s three ‘Variants On A Theme Of John Lewis (Django)' with some excellent parts on guitar and by the string quartet.Side two feature Gunther’s four ‘Variants On A Theme Of Thelonius Monk (Criss-Cross)’, and here one gets the real jazz feel with fine sax leads by Or- nette, Eddie Costa on vibes and lively background bass and drums.Detailed jacket notes by the composer add to this venturesome disc, the whole being a highly interesting experience for the diehard jazz buff.There are three new ‘twist’ titles, oldies such as ‘South Of The case.nso.oc.LIBERAL Jack Hution’s feens Special teenage rights under Canadian law Can Canadian teenagers be sued in our courts?Or is the law a rather remote institution reserved for adults?How many teenagers, 1 wonder, realize that they have special rights under Canadian law — as well as responsibilities?For example, the following questions have come to this column over a period of time.And we'll try to answer them and a few other related ones at the same time.1.At what age can teenagers marry without their parents’ cons>n‘?Let’s hope none of you are considering this drastic step, but a marriage can be annulled if you are under 18.2.Can the courts sue a teen-ager to collect money owed?This is a neat legal point and needs some explanation.First, the firm will always want to know whether you are 21 before giving credit on an expensive item.Sue for payment Stores can sue for payment on what the law calls “necessaries’”.But they cunnot sue a teen-ager for non-necessi- ties, and you will find that any store will keep this very carefully in mind vhen extending credit.For example, an 18-year- old fellow who has taken.a job in an office needs a suit to keep his position.But the courts would look at any legal aetion differently if he went out on a spree and bought 20 suits from one store.3.Can a leen-ager be asked to testify in court about an accident he or she witnessed?YES.Even very young children can be asked to add their testimony in court.4.Do a teen-ager’s earnings belong to his or her father?Theoretically, your parents can demand at least a portion of your part-time earnings because they could legally ask for room and board.5.What about car accidents involving your automobile?Is a teenager legally responsible?You bet your bottom dollar you're responsible, whether you're over 21 or not.If you've loaned the car to a friend careless enough to gel involved in an accident, you're still responsible.The other driver can sue both of you — but will proLably single you out.You are not liable, by the way, if your car is borrowed without your permission.And you are also not liable if a thief steals your car and becomes involved in an acei- dent.6.Does a teen-ager ever have to pay income tax?Yes, this is something common to anyone who earns more than minimum $1,000 of taxable income in Canada.Age has nothing to do with it.1 might add that the federal income tax department counts everything that you earn in that sum -— babysitting charges, snow-shovel- ling, gardening services and so on.However few teenagers have to worry about the problems of income tax.One final piece of advice from a lawyer friend: ‘’Teenagers should be careful to observe the same rule so many adults overlook: read everything carefully before signing it.And consult a lawyer if you're not sure about anything.” 1 just hope that most of you find out about mortgages, contracts (including marriage) before you find you've made a mistake early in adult life, A lot of adults you and 1 both know wish they had.Speaking of teen-agers and marriage, I was more than surprised to find the other day that the average age at which Canadian girls marry is still around 18.What are the chances of a successful marriage?American surveys figure that if you get married between 18 and 21 there is only a 40 percent chance that the marriage will last.If you are between 21 and 23 the odds go up to at least 50 percent.And if both partners are more than 25 the experts claim that there is a 70 percent chance of a successful marriage.Quite a problem, isn’t it?I can only assure you (having been married myself for the grand length of time of two weeks now) that statistics mean little if you're sure you've found the right person.TOP 20 TUNES 1.Stranger On the Shore — Mr, Acker Bilk 2.Everybody Loves Me Bul Yow — Brenda Lee 3.Johnny Angel — Shelly Fa- bares 4.Don’t Play That Sons (Yom Lied) that Welcome Restored is a retired Toronto schoolteacher (submitted by Mrs.Donna M.Moores); that Berkeley Square appeared recently in the Belleflair Light Opera Company's production of Ruddigore (courtesy G.R.Chater); that Edward Sweet- applebrowne was a clerk in a Brantford drug store back in 1930 in George Creasser’s memory; and that the Harbinger J.Spring, who wrote a letter recently to the Hamilton newspaper is an actual person ‘as verified by James Cooper).All of the directors, incidentally.are agreed on one point, and that is that a name to be really fascinating must be fascinating in all languages.Certain names which are fascinating in English are commonplace in their native country.For this reason we have had to reject a name appearing in the Sudbury telephone directory: Hawryszszy- szyn-Nick and also that of Won Gang Goon, in spite of its musical ring, We can’t always be sure of foreign names, of course, so often give them the benefit of the doubt.However, the committee has had to toss out the name of Mereddyd Zzrygaph, being the last name in the new Bell Telephone directory, We strongly suspect it belongs to a fraternity house.These cavils aside, the list is a rewarding one and I am happy once again to lend the facilities of this column for its wider dissemination : Seraphine Kunkel, retired steelworker, Fonthill (submitted by Helen Palmer), Imogene Klinyenfuss, publie health nurse, Tucson (Mrs.A.Lipton).Alone Carrett, Buffalo woman charged with murder (Florence Franck).McNair Inglefritz, amateur composer, New York (Mrs.J.Dawkins), Avison Wormald, British executive (Jim Montle), Launcelot Calthorpe, writer of letters to Guleph paper (Jim Montle).Sadie Gark, name in Vancouver paper ‘Stuart Keate).G.Fladgate Finch, British barrister (Hugh Henderson).Joseph Hollick de la Taste Tickell, proprietor of The Tickell Arms, Whittleford, England (Bill Boss).Pansy Aiken Slappey, authoress (Mrs.Elsie Edwards).Twyliah Orinda Hamstreet, citizen of Titonka, Iowa (Mrs.W.Hebson).Rev.Hyacinth .Deiancey Dilts (Forbes Helem).Fanning Yater Tant, author of anti-Catholic tract (Ben Kayfetz).Browning Mummery, late English tenor (Kosmos Ka.gool».Sepp Ruschup, company president.Vermont (K.Kagool), Taliaferro Boatwrigh{, book reviewer.N.Y.Herald Tribune (K.Kagool).Negley Teeters, criminoligist (Barbara Gilmour).Fendall Yerxa, TV host (Barbara Gilmour).Zanver Liff, N.Y.psychologist (Kathryn-Jane Keaie'.Fabian X.Schupper (K.J.Keate.Moyne L.Cubbage.Michigan resident (Maggi Russell).Firmin Pomoroy Bradbeer JF, Wilkshire policeman 'John M.Bulmer.Aspinis Astride, Kitchener P.T.instructor (John Fisher).Whamond William Dando Cruden, recently married Montrealer (Manny E.Bowen).Shalom Schtraks, name in law case (James J.Carthy).Eumilta McShine, West Indies student (Mrs.Margaret Rowan, Ub Iwerks, name on TV credit (Mrs.A, Tilton), A BRIGHTER DAY EVERY DAY WITH “THE KIRBY DERBY” THE “JOHN WILSON SHOW” 10 AM.-2 P.M.DAILY © © This week in Westmount Recent commentaries aimed at Canadian authors who won the Governor-General's literary awards this year made very interesting reading and showed : painstaking research.However, a little more time spent in gathering facts on French award winners would have given the reading public a chance to know that they, the French authors, namely Jean LeMoyne who wrote “‘Convergences'' — and Yves Theriault who wrote “‘Ashini’’, have up to date published and distributed more than 13,000 copies of these books.: By VALENTINA RAHR Figures are available from Claude Hurtubise, Kensing- ton avenue, who is heading up the firm of Editions HMH, publishers of ‘“Convergances”’;
