underwriters to remind everyone of the dangers and terrible losses in life and property caused by fires.Like water, fire is a good friend.to man when under control but his deadly enemy when that control is lost.We would like to suggest, and we certainly make no cldim’ to be original, that Fire Prevention Week should be marked every week. There is ‘good reason for this — the tragic toll During the past decade in Canada, for instance, some 5,500 persons were killed by fire; 16,000 others were permanently scarred or maimed; and material damage reached the staggering amount of more than $1,000,000,000.Material damage can be repaired and losses replaced — but nothing can restore a lost life, most of which occurs among the very young and the very old.And it is ironic that most fires, fatal and otherwise, are caused by carelessness. In brief, somebody goofed in most cases. There is another aspect of Fire Prevention Week which rarely gets any mention — the heroic role played by firemen 24 hours a day every day of the vear, These men perform an essential public service. We salute them! > 20 5 You SAY Thanks expressed fo Mayor, Council Mayor J.C.Cushing Sir, On reading the copy of The Examiner (last week) and the story of ‘The Monster of 1916.Well it set me back thinking to ponder if this item of war was a Monster, Why 1 say this, is because J was a soldier of the British Army for a considerable number of years, and spent 16 months of my time with the Royal Tank Corps, therefore 1 saw those so-called monsters.Around 1926, I was allowed to transfer to them from an infantry regt.and spent the first five months at the Regimental Depot of the RTC, which was then, and is still, in a very pleasant part of Dorsetshire known as Bovington Camp. There they had, and have since increased, the Tank Museum. This is a place at Bovington that has well-kept originals of the complete sets of Tanks, that have been in use with the British Army, and also others that were captured from the enemy.Bovington also now has its own technical school of Tank Warfare, known as the School of Tank Technology.Taught .history I have been a school instructor during my army life.and was always interested in military history.and the RTC, has a very unusual .history, To start with, thé form of fighting vehicles, which is another name for a Tank, Was carried out, way back in the days of ancient history, as the warriors of those days used to place sharp knives on the wheels of their chariots and charge through their enemy's, cutting them to ribbons with the knives. When the first tanks were in formation, the name of the unit was then known as the Heavy Machine Gun Corps.and the cap badge was in the form of crossed machine-guns.Later, when it was decided that they would be a surprise unit, it was a job to hide these great massive bits of iron, and they were readied, and placed on railway trucks and simply covered with tarpaulins, these tarpaulins were stencilled with the following words.“TANKS WATER FOR USE IN RUSSIA", This was to put off any spies that the Germans may have had and who may have got onto the secret. This is where the present world-wide fighting name got its origin, (TANKS WATER).During the First War, it is a well-known fact that these same tanks saved France and the Allies. At Cambria, around 1917.they went against the Hindenburg-Line, and as the Germans had made their trenches a few feet wider than the length of the tanks, so a TANKIE came up with the idea of each tank carrying its own “bridgework’” to make the crossing easier. This was done by a simple large bundle of faggots, thal were strapped to the top of the tank, and when it reached the line, simple let it fall into the trench. This defi- nately broke the hearts of the German soldier of that day.Top honors For this effort.te help save France, the French Government gave the Tank Corps an honor that was a first in the British army, and its custom is still carried out to this very day.To start with, the French gave the Tank Corps a citation of the French Croix de Guerre, and also later it permitted the use of the beret to be worn by all members of the Corps.Around 1924, this strange headgear came into use, and the Tank Corps were always proud to wear the same headgear, as did one of the famous and craek regiments of the French Army. This same type beret was later worn by all regiments of the British and also Canadian Army, the difference being the colors of the hats to suit the branch of the army using them.At present both armies are wearing the older form of the peak Forrage cap, but not so the Armoured units; they still retain their BERETS.As we mentioned, the armoured units: Well, at one time they were all mounied on horses, at first were using armoured and as the Tank Corps got bigger.so they took in the Cavalry units, and the same Cavalry units are all part of the Royal Armoured Corps.sR HH X —Word Puzzle AOROSS ‘1, Twentieth part of 8.Participle a ream ending 6.In this place 4.Cheer 10.Near the 5.Builds ulna 6.Exclama- 11.Admit tion frankly 7.Eft 12, Chuckled, Australian soldier of the 1914-1918 War was not for a long time fond ef the tanks, reason being that as the ground of the battle fields were bad with snow, and mud, large numbers of the Australians were found marching behind the nicely packed ground that the tank- tracks had made, and in this way suffered several casualties from well placed enemy rifles and guns. When I left the Regimental Depot We have in our district a young singer with multiple talents.Huguette Tourangeau | has peronality, stage appeal and the ambition necessary , for a successful career.Chosen as one of the soloists by the Montreal Festivals Society in the impressive ‘‘Vespers of the Blessed Virgin" by Monteverdi.which was the opening major presentation, this in itself was an indication of her gifts. Her voice is a rich mezzo soprano.1 had noticed her in the television production of “Carmen’’ by Bizet last year and thought her a very promising singer.Considering the above facts, Huguette Tourangeau would , be an interesting person to interview so 1 chose her for the first broadcast on October 3.Not only did 1 find her extremely charming but uncovered many other things that the public like to know. Her musical background began in Sherbrooke: she was born in Montreal but attended school there because an elderly relative was principal and it was in Sherbrooke at the age of 15 that her beautiful voice was discovered. She won first prize in ‘Festival de la Jeunesse'' two years in succession.Huguette Tourangeau studies at the Conservatoire with Mrs.Ruzena Herlinger but continued her academic studies and has a second career at her fingertips (should she ever want to switch). She is a Bachelor of Education (Eco- le Pedagogique}).This corresponds to our BA course at McGill. When I enquired if there were any musicians in her family, we learned that two of her uncles were singers.Rene Tourangeau, a basso, sang at the Metropolitan Opera and his career ended when he died through an accident at the age of 24.His brother Lucien sang with the popular “Les Varietes Lyriques”.An- dree Desautels, editor of the JMC.paper, teaches History of Music at the
