and at the same time provide a little entertainment as well. Its even possible most people fall in the last category, believing the community benefits very well as a result of their participation in this charitable undertaking of the Rota- rians, their families and their friends. We published a letter last week from one reader who didn’t think he got very good value for his money, and Charity aspect must prevail Sir: — 1 read with some dismay the letter in your last edition signed “F.A" It is obviously from an individual that can be termed a ‘spoilsport’.I have attended Rotary Carnivals in this city for many years as well as countless fund-raising events of this type.and while 1 do not countenance bare-faced robbery — I believe that an event of this kind is permissable in the name of sweet charity.Certainly there might be other types of carnivals and tombolas.but they wouldn’t raise the same amount for good works, and as I understand it this is the avowed purpose of these affairs. When one spends of a dollar or a five-spot or a ten at a Rotary carnival, it isn't the Rotarian (individually or the Rotary Club that benefits — it is the various good-work- projects that get the gravy.1 can think of only one way in which your correspondent can atone for the harm he may have done to this worthy cause by his ill-timed and ill- advised years.1 attended the carnival twice last year, first with my wife, then with my wife and children and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely on both occasions. Our total expenditure for the two evenings was about ten dollars. My son who is something of an expert at the dart board won a good blanket while our young daughter won a small panda bear at the fish pond. Most of our friends also walked away with objects of a definite value, Those who received nothing more than a souvenir ash tray or bamboo cane did not that the carnival was, at least, a more painless way of contributing to the many worthy projects of the Westmount Rotary than the obiquitous charity drive.Overwhelmed 1 am with appeals for various charity drives, all apparently most worthy.1 would hesitate before contributing anything to the Westmount Rotary Club if approached by a canvasser.1 am quite willing, however, to spend ten dollars at the carnival where 1 am given some excitement for my money.LOWER-WESTMOUNT most people have already made definite plans for their summer holidays. For us, members of Parliament, things are a little different because there is no way we can tell when we will be through with the work that must be done before a summer recess.Juest the other day the government gave the House a list of items which it hopes to get completed before we can even think of a recess, much less start packing for a vacation. The list contains quite a number of fairly routine items, but even those are given a thorough examination by the opposition before they are approved, Pension Plan Then there are also quite a number of major pieces of legislation on which we hope to make progress before a recess, For instance, there is an amendment to the BNA Act that must be obtained so that supplementary benefits to widows and orphans may be included in our Canada Pension Plan. Our new defence leislation, which has been given first and second reading in the House, is now being studied by a multi-party committee, and it is hoped that it will be brought back to the House for final approval before summer. The government also hopes {0 make early progress with its bill establishing a 12-mile fishing limit and its rsolution dealing with the Columbia River treaty.Other priorities are the extension of family allowances to children aged 16 and 17 still attending school and the proposal to provide
