this week, therefore special caution must be exercised immediately. The highest number of accidents involving children occur when they dart out from between parked cars.Police officials have asked drivers to be on the watch for this deadly habit.School crossing guards will be posted at dozens of intersections near the schools starting Wednesday. It was noted that parents should take the time to learn where these guards are stationed and instruct their children to follow his commands.A board fo hear appeals A Westmount City official announced this week that appeals from local proper‘y minimum wage.Anything less, these days, is scandalously low — if one overlooks the bonanza in tips.Perhaps you will have to raise room, meal and other rates to meet the increased labor cost. Why not do a good job of it.Put pay scales on decent living levels, so that employees’ palms need no longer be upturned on every hand to guests in your otherwise excellent hostelries.Absence of that archaic sign of servility has been the joy of and a boon to the airlines.Ask your subsidiary, booming Air Canada.Westmount is proud of its CN president.Go down in history as the man who abolished tips (Recreation Dept.) ?1 checked with Mr.Roth- well who said the same thing and asked me to see him if this happened again. This did happen again exactly the same day. When I refused to move the lady attendant came around with paper and pencil and wanted personal details (not measurements) — name, phone, address, etc. When 1 declined to do so she asked for my pass, which ] also refused to give as 1 had already shown it coming in.In both instances a couple of feet away men were lying in their brief briefs, Briefer than our bikinis. When 1 pointed this out 1 was told that orders had not been given against ‘them’.This 1 think is a double standard. Also there are various kinds of bikinis: brief, medium and high.Which are allowed and which are not allowed, this is the $64 question. However, 1 was rather horrified to see the personal interference, and how easily the attendants | scemed to have accepted the paper and pencil role.Surely their | job is to keep their eyes glued to ;the pool.I think the Recreation Dept.should be more concerned with i the breaking of the anti-noisc law ‘by children and teen-agers and ‘over screaming at the top of {their voices power to generate electricity is expected to bring benefits to Canada in two-ways — be reviving sales of uranium and by creating a new export market for Canadian-made nuclear power plants and equipment, About 50 countries are likely à to be generating electricity from the heat of nuclear reactors by the 1980's, reports the current Commercial Letter of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.Several countries are doing so now, including Canada, the United States, Britain, France and Russia. The Commercial Letter says the generation of electricity is “the most widely anticipated use of nuclear reactors'’, and plans are being accelerated for the building of nuclear power stations throughout the world.According to a recent survey, there will be between 20 million and 22 million kilowatts of installed nuclear generating capacity in the world by 1970, excluding the Communist countries. It is estimated that this capacity will increase to 200 million kilowatts by 1980.Bright Prospects “While Canadian uranium production continued to decline in 1964, prospects for the future have been brightened considerably by recent developments,’ the Commercial Letter says.“Some experts have begun to talk of a supply and demand balance by as carly as 1967." Canadian uranium ore reserves amount to about 35 per cent of all known reserves in the western world, and ‘the future outlook for the sale of uranium is favorable.” The enginecring and construction of nuclear electrical generating stations will become an export opportunity of growing importance, the Commercial Letter notes.“There is every prospect that the heavy-water reactors designed in Canada will lead to the adoption of this type in many other countries. This will create an export market potential for nuclear generating stations, a large range of components, heavy water, and uranium fuel that should substantially increase in the coming years.“Canada’s potential share of the world market for nuclear power plants in the next ten years is estimated at about $1.5 billion.Of this, $1 billion would be for nuclear apparatus and over $500 million in associated conventional engineering equipment.” Qualified scientists and engineers are essential to the development of nuclear technology.À permanent centre is being built at Rolphton, Ontario, site of the Nuclear Power Demonstration Station, for training personnel from countries buying Canadian population in Westmount is declining with swiftness.Disease, salt on the streets, and highrise apartments are all taking their toll. Why then, did City Hall condone the wanton destruction of the magnificently healthy maple trees between Greene and Oliver Avenues?Bordering a frost fence behind Steinberg’'s parking lot, these trees were not in the way of construction.Since the Public Works and Parks Departments have been combined, the trees are fast disappearing. Why doesn't the tree department sound its voice? In future construction more stringent zoning laws preserving the trees must be applied — and soon.M.CAMPBELL well as those re- operate Canadian reactors as quired to stations.Atoms instead of fuel In the generation of electricity, the nuclear reactor is simply the source of heat. The controlled chain reaction of atoms in uranium dioxide is used instead of the burning of a conventional fuel in a fire-box.While the Commercial Letter warns against extreme expectations, it anticipates that nuclear power will cause important changes in the economy.‘Many new materials, some of them known only in laboratories a few years ago, are coming into use in nuclear reactors. These developments should not only create new industry but also have a profound effect on many existing industries, ‘The trend of nuclear developments is toward the equalization of power costs at lower levels in all areas. This is of great importance for balanced development of all regions of the country (and of the world), for rural electrification and for many municipal and industrial electric systems.” Here are highlights of the Commercial Letters summary of specific progress and plans to date, in Canada and in other countries: Canada now has a nuclear power capacity of 20,000 kilowatts.and by 1985 this capacity will have increased to 14.5 million kilowatts, Present capacity is at the single plant now operating, the pilot plant at Rolphton, Ontario. The first full-scale nuclear power station in Canada will be the 200,000 kilowatt station at Douglas Point, Ontario, on Lake 25 years ago Sept.5, 1940 in The Examiner Runaway Horse: The front window of a street car and the shaft on a baker's wagon were damaged when a runaway horse heading west on St.Catherine street, suddenly altered its course and collided with the street car.Harold Chadwick, a salesman for James Strachan, bakers, told police he left the horse and wagon opposite 4336 St.Catherine street, while he delivered bread. The animal apparently became frightened and bolted.Downs German Plane: Winner of the Distinguished Flying Cross last month, Flying Officer George Patterson Christie, whose parents reside at 87 Holton avenue, was among the many Canadian pilots to shoot down a German plane in the fierce aerial battle over Britain on Friday, Aug.30.F/O Christie, who learned to fly here before joining the RAF some years ago, is the son of Prof.C, V.Christie, of McGill University, and Mrs.Christie.: He is now a member of the ALL- Canadian RAF Squadron. Some 20 German planes were bagged during this encounter.Huron, This is scheduled for completion next year.A power station near Toronto A major nuclear power station is planned at Pickering near Toronto with ultimate capacity of three million kilowatts, and the first two of the six reactors are expected to be in operation in 1970-1971.Plans have been announced for a 250,000 kilowatt nuclear power station in the province of Quebec, with first delivery of power in the early 1970’s.An advanced research reactor is under construction at the Whiteshell Research Establishment near Winnipeg and it is expected to come into operation later this year with initial design output of 40,000 kilowatts.Britain so far has generated twice as much nuclear electricity as the rest of the world combined. This
