[" EC un G WES vl BRIO oad 6666 Oo Vol.Xxxin, No.38 _ MONTREAL, FRIDAY, À SEPTEMBER 24, 1965 20 PAGES 5 CENTS Pre-inspection aids fighters in flash fire Fire raged for 15 minutes this week on the 11th floor of the uncompleted high-rise building, Chateau Maisonneuve, at the corner of Claremont and Western avenues.There were no injuries reported during the fire although flames could be seen from long distances.¥ The fire broke out at 1.19 p.m.Tuesday in a large pile of insulating material on the 11th floor.The walls on that floor have not i yet been put in and the wind fed fire ran wild for a few minutes.Firemen were on the scene in minutes and due to a previous inspection of tne building, they had fire under control and extinguished quickly.A by-law in Westmount requires all building under construction to have a Standpipe System installed on every floor as the floors are added to the building.The system comprises of pipes running up the building to which the firemen can connect hoses and by opening a valve, be supplied with water, Westmount firemen knew where the pipe openings were, how to get to them and by using the "| pipes on the 10th and 11th floors played two streams on the fast burning fire.Smoke was a factor in the early minutes of the fire and.the winds | blew in freely.Fire officials said later that they are more worried about these high-rise buildings when they are under construction rather then when they are completed.There are more inflammable materials around when the building is under construction.EGAN CHAMBERS, 251 Ken- sington avenue, past president of the all part of the great movement to discover how disease can.be prevented as well as cured.“Through painstaking research in numerous medical centres in many countries, it is now possible to prevent election thanks to Tories HANKS to the Tories, it continues to be a quiet clection campaign, so far, in Westmount.And at the rate they are going, there will be hardly any contest at all.The local Progressive Conservatives show no signs of life as yet another week toward Nov.8 polling day passes by.The Liberals may be excused for taking their time getting to a nominating convention.For after all Mr.Drury, incumbent and cabinet minister, is their obvious choice.Even so, they've now said they'll meet next Thursday to name their man, But something's gohe wrong in the Tory camp.Perhaps Mr.Pearson’s election writ caught them in disarray.There's not $0 much as a good rumor of their intentions.This is not good strategy.It is bad political gamesmanship not to expose your hopeful to the electorate for as long as possible.The NDP’s Geoffrey Adams was named months ago.Tory faithful and non- faithful alike can be forgiven for suspecting that Westmount is being kept open by national party chiefs for a possible Hess- like figure to jump into the fray.Or behind the scene “pre-nomination nominating” is going on.In either case, it is bad democracy.Choosing the people for or against whom we shall vote is too serious a business to be left to professional politicians and or party hacks.The local P.C.organization should, without further dilly-dally, call a regular, open, unrigged nominating convention.Let’s see who Westmount Tories have got to offer.Sabbath is sacred, for a new reason OLKS in the Olivier avenue area have deep sympathy from the rest of us.Weekday construction noise is bad enough, but is the price of progress.Sunday is something else.Sunday used to be — and for some, still is — sacred because it is the Sabbath.One wonders if the police had lingering feeling this way, too, thus gave permission for the moving a big crane at a very early hour so that the operation would not be seen by the more devout citizens by the time they were on their way to church.Whatever, someone goofed.In this day and age there is something else very nearly as sacred to the modern urban dweller: his Sunday morning sleep-in.YOU SAY Battle of bosoms has an echo here Editor: 1 chuckled silently this summer when officials of the Westmount Municipal Swimming Pool found themselves involved in an argument about the brevity of a bikini.One might just as well try and answer the old question about “how long is a piece of string?” To come to the point, however, I now sec by the public prints that the British Commonwealth Arts Festival has decided to defy a Government order and present the Sierra Leone dancers naked from the waist up.Bully for them.Can you imagine anything more ridiculous than trying to present African girls in a native dance, but making them add brasieres?This kind of blind officialdom is akin to the society that advocates clothing for dogs in public for reasons of morality.Bon who can negotiate with town councils and planning commissions; who can make money raising speeches every week and control a public meeting with an unruly and hostile crowd.and who can steer a l4-storev building to completion from checking the first blueprint to ordering the last bathmat.But she is also a woman who takes pride in always having done her own house-keeping and cooking, although her husband was a business executive; who wielded both paint brush and scrub brush to prepare some of the old folks homes for their guests: who shopped for the homes in the public market to get the best buys; who is a little nervous about having her picture taken, and doesn't dare drive a car.When exhausted by days of committee meetings and business conferences, she goes home and cleans house.On all home boards The story of Mae McKay is Ernest A.Lourain Mr.Laurain has been named general chairman of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital of Montreal subscription campaign, which runs from October 4 to 18 and seeks $150,000.Mr.Laurain has been an active worker for the hospital for many years and is past-president of the Solar Club of the hospital.WORKING MAN Ezzard Charles, former heavyweight champion.is now in a $100-a-week job in Chicago.‘I have no debts and I also have none of the more than $1-million I made as a fighter,” he says.“I made a lot of investments — a restaurant, a bar, a night club really the story of senior citizen work in Montreal, In on the job, as an official put it, ‘from the first snceze,” she has been board chairman of every one of the church homes for the elderly in Montreal.Until a year ago, she was, as well, full-time, five-day -a-week administrator of the Griffth- McConnell Home, responsible for 164 guests and a staff of 34.“She has done a monumental piece of work.Our church owes her a great debt of gratitude.” says the Rev.Callum Thompson of Westmount Park.Mae (the duchess: McKay, ‘Westmount standings TERMITE Falcons 2 2004 Gophers : 2110 2 Leopards 20200 MOSQUITO Argos 31 0 2 4 Rough Riders 3 111 3 Alouettes 31 L113 Tiger Cats 301 2 2 EIGHT MAN TACKLE Brones 2 2004 Huskies 2200 Bulls 20200 Mules 2020 started in 1930 as a secretary to what was then the Bethany home for unmarried mothers.But needs changed;
