This has been the big complaint lof all the store owners on St Catherine street.- Council promofes Firemen three policemen Three Public Safety officers of the Cily of Westmount were promoted tu the rank of sergeant at this week's monthly meeting of the city council. The new ranks went to: N.J, F.R.Myles.G.J.McKenna and D.Campeau.The motion was put forth by Alderman Fred Gross for Alder-' man Byers who was unable to attend the council meeting due to sickness.Alderman Gross noted that the promotions were well deserved and that the three officers had’ served their city well.Deputy Director Sid Ashford was on hand at the meeting on] behalf of the Public Safety Department. The three officers were not | aware that they had been made ; sergeants until the next day when | they arrived at the station on Stanton street. They were then officially told.i Traffic signs Alderman Gross, again on be-| half of Alderman Byers, moved | that council order the placement! of ‘Stop’ avenue. The signs proposed are to be placed on Winchester at its; intersection with Claremont and, Prince Albert avenues. The move was adopted by council. It was a busy night for Alderman Gross who also moved that a ‘20 MPH" sign be placed on the north side of Barat road directly opposite its intersection with Vig- nal street.Gross told the council that both recommendations had been made by the Administrative Traffic Committee.Alderman Peter McIntyre, Commissioner of Finance for the City of Westmount, moved that the council give its approval to the signs on Winchester, city's list of accounts for the month of February amounting to $731,742.84.The moved was passed.Westmount detective recovering Westmount detective Bruce Whiteford is at home recovering from a major eve operation.{on Stanton street, less than 60 Bruce, who has figured in many big cases in Westmount in the past few months, came to headquarters prior to the operation complaining of a loss of focus in his right eye.He was sent to the health department where the doctor had not vet arrived on duty.Rather then wait, he proceeded to a specialist on Sherbrooke street who.as it turned out, had the very latest equipment for eye examination. After one look at Whiteford’s eye the doctor told him he had a serious problem. The retina had been injured and the doctor |; ordered an operation at once. That afternoon he was booked into the Queen Elizabeth Hospi- | tal and the following morning the operation took place. He was released from hospital eight days later.that his eye will be fine after several weeks of total rest.D 's have assured Bruce! The Westmount Exominer, Thursday, March 10, 1966 — 2 Library issues 66th annual report “A library is many things. It is a storehouse of recorded knowledge, a means of continuing education, and a reflection of community needs and interests. In this last aspect it is clear that Canadians are vitally interested in their own country and are preparing for both Expo and the Centennial.“Looking back over 1965 one important factor was the confidence with which we could expand our services to the public through a program begun last year with the very generous grant-in-aid from the Department of Cultural Affairs, We have increased our microfilm holdings and subscribed to more ‘Who's periodicals. We have bound more books and brought more books. As a result the Cataloguing, Circulation and reference Departments have been busier than ever before, and much of the Grant has been spent on salaries to enable them to deal with the increased work.“The Grant has also allowed us to inaugurate an experimental Student Membership which seems likely to be successful.None Resident students pay a small fee to take books from the Library and in this way more people may share the benefit of the Grant, “Another first this year was the acquisition of a copying first?"Obviously, when Expo 67 opens, there'll be radio and TV, teletypewriters, picture transmission machines — and phones. And the microwave and *supplied by Bell. But it may surprise you cable equipment for almost all of them will be to hear that Bell people were among the very first to work on the Expo site.,They not only helped plan things from the very beginning — they were right in there with mobile or temporary phones as soon as the first machine » got to work.Because: without communications (and that means much more than merely phones) there's practically nothing that can happen these days. That goes for the important big jobs like Expo, and the important little jobs like getting your phone installed. Each one requires a lot of work and effort — long before the first message ever "goes through.‘Long-Range Planning—one of the reasons why Bell Communications serve you so well.Bell Canada e machine. The company installs it and collects all revenues — we merely house it for the convenience of the public. It is too carly to tell, but it may protect the books from the desperate students who used to tear pages out.August was a rather quiet month to install the machine, and we were doubtful how often it would be used.Little did we know. With the computer’s odd compilation of High School Leaving results, parents and pupils descended on the machine to make copies to accompany their protests.“For the first time the change in the age for entrance to the Adult Library is reflected in the statistics, In the fall of 1964 it was decided to lower the age of admittance from fourteen to thirteen and there was a stream of teenagers transferring to the Adult Library. These are the avid readers and the Juvenile found their circulation noticeably affected. It is ironic too, that with qualified librarians in the Protestant Schools there are no longer organized class visits to the Library. This means that children whose parents do not introduce them to the Library often miss the adventure of reading for pleasure.BOOKS “Critics are always bemoaning the downfall of the novel and this year there was little to encourage its defenders.Arthur Hailey’'s Hotel topped the Best Seller list most of the year, and though we wish a fellow Canadian well we can hardly throw hats in the air for his achievement.Up the doown staircase and The Source pleased our public but little else stirred excitement.“Biographies are always popular, and the numerous books on President Kennedy lead the list followed by Larry Bonham-Car- ter’s Winston Churchill as I knew him. After Churchill’s death there was an increased demand for his own writtings.Markings by the late Dag Hammarskjold, Dame Edith Sitwell’s Taken Care Of and Lady Longford’s Queen Victoria: born to succeed were other noteworthy biographies.“Dr X writting on his years of internship was the surprise bestseller of the year, and everyone wanted to know what life with Pncasso would be like as told by Francoise Gilot.“Travellers, armchair and otherwise, liked Morton's Traveller in Italy and V.S.Pritchett’s beautiful New York Proclaimed.“An odd and engaging best seller was Games People Play, by Dr.Berne.It must be enlivening many social occasions.“As 1 have intimated before there has been a growing interest in our own country.Edmund Wilson's O Canada drew attention to Canadian novelists and poets, particularly those of French Canada. An unlikely choice for popularity was The Vertical Mosaic, a study of class structure in Canada.Election year brought many readers to Fari- bault and Fowler's Ten to One — The Confederation Wager, Pierre Sevigny’s This game of politics, George Grant's Lament for Nation, Walter O’Hearn’s a look at ourselves past and present.‘With the publication of volume three of Lanctot’'s History of Canada in English, Joseph Schulls Laurier and the conclusion of Graham's biography of Arthur Meighen, we saw our history in perspective.‘Novelists Michael Sheldon and Claude Jasmin portrayed our Canadian ways in The unmelting pot and Ethel and the Terrorist, and perhaps we can be persuaded to mend them.REFERENCE DEPT.“Never before in the history of the Library has there been such a demand for material on Canada.Often every book on a particular subject was in circulation. This unprecedented demand is probably a combination of factors, including the approach of our Centenary, the fact of Expo '67 and more school and college courses on Canadian history and economics.Whatever the reason.we looked up information on Canada's natural resources, the pension plan, bankruptcies, Hudson's Bay, life in New France, the Underground Railway, the game of Lacrosse, the Red River Settlement and statistics of all kinds.“In science, we looked up the thyroid gland, photosynthesis, D.N.A., the language of bees, and insecticides. In biography we found material on Audiberti, de Mondrian, Brecht, Ghelderode, Dupleix, Copernicus, Hammurabi, Marquis de Laroche and Miquel Servetus.“The do-it-yourself enthusiasts wanted to know how to make yoghurt, a rabbittrap, soap, build a gun rack, dye with homemade vegetable dyes, blow glass, clean a swimming pool, thin woodlots, solder silver and make quince jelly.“Other subjects covered were burial customs of non-literate nations, the Hapsburg lip, the location of Anfa, Periclean architecture and all the perrenials — censorship, courtly love, toast ete.“We found out who first used the
