Take us with you, We love to go North, And we're friendly companions. The modern sound Town and country Sheraton Hotel. This seemed 'Mac’ finds his right niche by Stephen Schofield to be a waste of time to Mac, who preferred to push on with his work. Finally the boss offered Mac the managership of the firm's Ottawa branch, which he refused because his wife, Marion, did not want to live in Ottawa. And that, as some married men know, settled that. But this is odd because Marion has many friends in Ottawa, where she was born and raised; and at her age of 32 it is against all normal in- stinet not to want to go home again to familiar haunts and faces.‘Il have had quite enough of smart hats and cocktail parties and dressing up,” Marion told me.“I would rather live in the country and let my children run around in dungarees,” So that is what she does. And she wears dungarees a good deal herself. She and Mac live quietly and remote from any city in a house on the St.John river, which laps gentiy along the edge of their acre.Although Marion misses Mac a good deal during his long jaunts throughout the province, they both much prefer the tranquility of New Brunswick.Bank letter lauds British Columbia The rapid development in British Columbia of “a prosperous economy and a modern society” is reviewed and analyzed in the current issue of the Commercial Letter of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.Canada's west coast was unknown to Europeans for more than two centuries after development began in the east, and growth was slow until the 1850's.The Commercial Letter reports that in 1855 the total population of European origin on Vancouver Island was 774, and the population on the mainland was similarly sparse, Then the discovery of alluvial gold deposits on the Columbia and Fraser Rivers brought thousands of gold miners and triggered the sequence of events that transformed a fur-trading frontier into the prosperous and diversified economy of today. This year British Columbia is celebrating the centennial of the union of the mainland and Vancouver Island in 1866.It became a province of Canada in 1871.‘As an important supplier of the industrial world’s needs for forest and mine products, the province is on the threshold of a second century of illustrious growth,” the Commercial Letter says.DIVERSIFIED The terrain and climate are as diversified as the economy. The climate varies from near- Mediterranean to tundra in different areas, with the warm Japanese Current and the series of mountain ranges exerting their influence on temperature and rainfall.Forests cover 58 per cent of British Columbia and are ‘the most valuable directly exploitable resource of the province”.Estimated value of forest production in 1965 was $980 million, and new capital investment reached a record high level with the erection of an estimated $250 million worth of new manufacturing facilities.“The forest industries of British Columbia have an enormous growth potential,” the Commercial Letter says.''‘With sus- tained-yield management, more complete utilization of the tree itself and the growing importance of the interior timber stands, the forest industries can be expected to continue their leading role.” The manufacturing sector ranks first in the province in terms of value of output, with a 1965 total of more than $2.9 billion, Wood and paper product industries continue to be dominant, but there have been ex- pansions in recent years in the production of transportation equipment, iron and steel products, smelting, metal fabrication, machinery, printing and publishing and chemicals. The substantial growth in tertiary industries — with concentration on trade, service, transportation and communications.and finance and related activities — ‘reflects clearly the increasing maturity and strength of British Columbia's economy.” The mining industry has shown continuous growth, and output in 1965 was $279 million. The metals with the greatest output were zinc, lead, copper and iron ore, and during the year the province became an important producer of molybdenum.Crude petroleum, natural gas and natural gas products, asbestos and coal were the leading nonmetals. While minister to France, Thomas Jefferson studied French cuisine and wrote a cook book for use in the kitchen at Monticello.RESIDENTIAL PLUMBING "2 COMMERCIAL Call For Electric Rotary Sewer Cleaning Service Our plumbing experts will unclog that drain quickly ! felt for Westmount’s Selby street area residents.Their cause — termination of their tenures, many of long standing - is well known. They are, in the first instance, victims of progress: specifically, the Trans-Canada Highway to be buill where their homes lie.Like the Dorchester- street-widening evictees before them.and others who lived in the paths of private projects on Elm, Wood and other avenues, they are faced with finding new homes.+ * # IT is safe to say that - those who owned their abodes have been or will be fairly compensated for their material losses. The record in this province in expropriations is generally good. The law and public authority are just.Sentimental and other unmeasurable values, rarely compensated, are of course what evoke the sympathy, which cannot be traded for cash. What lends piquancy to the Selbyites' situation is that many are not the compensated landlords: they are tenants whose grievance is directed, not only fo the federal, provincial and municipal authorities who decided to put an expressway there, but that of most tenants for most landlords: “They've got recouped for their real estate investment: but we're being turned out of our homes we LIVE here!” Selby street has offered these families, for many years, substantial residences of (superficially at least) good address, Westmount, at rents far more reasonable than paid by most families of similar circumstances in the Montreal district. There are detractions — an aging area, proximity to industrial activity, rail road tracks, etc.— but many advantages such as access to Westmount’s parks, library, schools and other amenities, closeness to downtown for jobs, shopping, amusements, We simply cannot go along with the plaint that provision should have been made for equivalent accommodation for these people before Selby street became no more.We simply cannot go along with the idea, from any class or segment of society, that public authority must continue to maintain individual citizens in the circumstances in which public authority may, for public, legitimate and in this case pressing purposes.finds and uproots them.* #%* x YOVERNMENT in this country has no tradition of general public housing for private citizens and we hope it never shall.lt is one aspect of our lives — our private preserves — from which most of us should hope the social- izers in government at all levels will keep their cotton-picking hands. To our many friends in Selby street we feel bound to say: You're not alone.but our best advice is self-help comes before all special pleading.IH you haven't already done so, get out like your fellow citizens and buy or rent the best possible new homes anywhere to suit your fastes and pocketbooks.Biography of Streets Gladstone avenue Gladstone avenue extends from 4112 Dorchester boulevard north to 4124 St.Catherine street west. This is a very short narrow street, but extracts from born in Liverpool. The ‘Gladstones’ were of ancient Border stock.John Gladstone became a Merchant Prince of Liverpool, Member of Parliament and Scottish landlord. His second wife was of Highland birth.Their famous son, William, recalls his mother as | a beautiful and admirable woman, and his father as a strong-natured man, with a deep sense of duty.: William went to Eton, and! spoke later of his slow de-| velopment there.Under ; Hawtrey and Keats he learn-' ed to work well.Arthur Hal- | lam remarked his good looks.| his glowing scholarship, his remarkable contributions to! debate, and above all the fine influence of his charcater. He went to Christ Church, Oxford, where he founded a debating society called The Duke of Newcastle W.EG.| asked him to stand for Newark, and in 1833 he took a seat in the Assembly, which! he charmed and dominated | for 60 years. His own choice | would have been the church.! but his father made him a statesman, and he soon justified his choice.| MN was in defence of slave labor as administered on his father's estate in Demarara, that he made his maiden speech: He was Lord of Treasury in Peel's government and Under Secretary for the Colonies. When Peel's government fell, Gladstone devoted himself to reading and the preparation of his famous book, “The State in its Relation with the Church.” He married Catherine Glynne of Hawarden, and enjoyed many years of happiness and a delightful and historic home.He returned to office with Peel in 1841 as Vice-President of the Board of Trade, and drew up a revised tariff.— a long step towards free trade. At thirty- six he was one of the most striking figures in the House of Commons. His superb health, his extraordinary power of work and rich imagination impressed all.His fine manners, his intellectual face, his deep-set flashing eyes, his erect and dignified bearing, and his voice of incomparable flexibility, gave him a natural equipment such as few orators have possesssed.Prime Minister When a coalition government under Lord Aberdeen came to power, Gladstone became Chancellor of the Exchequer.which he was to make one of the greatest offices of the State. When Palmerston succeeded Lord Aberdeen, Gladstone caused great surprise by joining him. This act meant his enlistment with the Liberal Party. He worked with Russell, who succeeded Palmerston. When Russell retired, Gladstone was head of the Liberal Party and in 1868 he became Prime Minister. He resigned in 1874, but in 1880 he took up the burden for the second time.He resigned again in 1885.and after the in Opposition, In 1892, he once more became Prime Minister.his fourth term of office. This grand old man spent his closing years happily at Hawarden.devoting himself to literature and writing.POCKET CARTOON By OSBERT LANCASTER “One of these days our swinging vicar is going to swing just a little too far!” YOU SAY Resident writes about traffic Dear Sir: The article on page 1 “Ar- rows-arrow everywhere but ne'er an arrow for me” leaves me quite cold.1 thank your sympathy with both drivers is quite misplaced. If there is a spot in the city where the signals are well marked it is at Victoria and Sherbrooke.Arrows on the streets well before the driver reaches the corner show which lane he should be in and if he gets in the wrong one, he certainly isn’t paying much attention to signs, or signals — a fault evidenced by a good number of drivers both in Westmount and in Montreal, May I say that that particular corner.as far as I am concerned, is a treat for pedestrians — if drivers pay attention to the signals — as a pedesirian does have a chance to cross without being cut off from all sides, My one pleasure in the article is that a police car was around at the time and cautioned him, and I don’t think the officer can be blamed for not noticing the other offender; in today’s traffic conditions he would almost need eyes in the back of his head.So instead eof sympathy for the poor driver who had to turn right when he didn't really wan{ to and possibly delay him all of five minutes, have a little praise for the police officer who saw what happened and instead of ignoring it, did something about it.At least one more driver on Victoria Avenue will watch out for the signals.Yours very truly, L.M.Rowe.50 Academy Rd.Selby resident fail to distinguish between our Lord's disciples and His apostles. They suppose they are the same. This is incorrect, however, for our Lord had a multitude of disciples while He had only a few plumed head reflected in the glassy surface. Then it was off and away, the big, blue-grey wings carrying it slowly up and over the tree-tops before we had a chance to see the long legs sticking out behind and the long neck neatly folded up.However, we had already recognized the bird as a Great Blue Heron and not that other long-legged big bird, a Crane, which would have held its neck stretched out to its fullest capacity.Long legs have been given to birds that find their food in shallow water. The Great Blue Heron wades in until the water about its long toes is several inches deep, then stands silently watching for prey to pass that way.A long neck is necessary, and a long, slim bill too, in order to reach down into the water and snatch up a small fish, a frog, or possibly a water snake.Sandpipers Too Other long-legged birds that we Canadians may see on our inland waters as well as on our coasts are the Sandpipers. These are comparatively small — some very small indeed.Maybe you have come across the well known Spotted Sandpiper, because every little Canadian lake or stream seems to have at least one pair.Where as the Great Blue Heron stands four feet tall, “Spotty” is only 712 inches long. The nickname is very suitable for the underside is literally covered with large, black spots.Overtake the little long-legged bird and it will flutter off, these attractive items eligible for special prizes for lucky number passport holders.ROOM?FOR MORE There is still some room, How much we really don’t know for those interested in going to camp
