Stephen Schofield Dunsfold, Surrey, Eng: About this column a second complaint — and a sizzler — comes from another old Flame, blonde Betty of Westmount avenue, whence | am booted over the CPR tracks to the depths of the gutter on the south side of St.Antoine street, ignobly evicted by the City of Westmount, Such revered institutions as LCC 1 have irretrievably reduced to rubble on Royal avenue; and have exposed, over here, to all Westmount, over there, our moth-caten carpet, my £5 piano, and the fact that lizards inhabit the cellar; and, of all cruelties, that F really was once in a canoe in the moonlight with Sally.(Between vou and me in the telephone booth Betty does NOT like Sally ONE BIT, and never did).COMEDOWN What a deplorable comedown, after that book, to be writing for such a wretched rag as The Westmount Examiner, which is used chiefly for laying fires and wrapping up yesterday's fishbones.Or on the kitchen floor after washing. No one reads the rag.No one reads anything with my name attached, and certainly not under that horrible photograph, 1 should wear a nice tie and shirt and not that silly old cap.The damage is done, If 1 dare to set foot on Sherbrooke street I would have to stop at Atwater or Claremont because no one in between would be seen talking to me.Oh, my.Oh, my.How old flames flare. Will none of you men put in a good word — just a line, I deliberately insert abstruse phraseology or even words, not in any effort to be succinct or clear or accurate, to express a subtle shade or more precise meaning, rather to present myself as being better than I am, do you think the reader would not sense this as readily as a reporter sniffs a story or a hound scents a fox?100 PAPERS I know a columnist by the name of Harris, not personally, I know his work which is syndicated in about 100 North American papers. He wears a toupé, which is nothing at all consequential. But being an able journalist he wrote a column about what a “jump” it was for him to thus expose his tremendous facade: really nothing more than a joke.In a way the toupé is a Homburg shed in his column.GUNGA DEHN “You're a better man than I am, Gunga Dehn!” wrote Kipling of an African soldier. The reasons why he considered this man to be superior to himself, are not relevant here.In your Westmount home you may well {ind the reasons, if you are interested, in the perfect form of a peom. What is relevant here is that Kipling did consider himself inferior to Mr.Dehn and quite possibly a friend could have advised him thus: “Rudyard, if you must write about this coal-black, kinky- haired, thick-lipped, illiterate creature, for heaven's sake don’t say he is better than you are, not in print, even if you do think so.” But to Kipling skin is cellophane, ‘‘For all his dirty hide, he was white, clear white, inside .Though I've belted Obituaries Mrs.Sheila Stein A funeral service for Mrs.Sheila Stein was held at 2.00 p.m.Monday at the Chapel of Paper- man & Sons, Cote des Neiges Road.Mrs.Stein died early Saturday at the Royal Victoria Hospital. She was 33.A ski enthusiast who took an active interest in the development of the Mt.Habitant ski centre at St.Sauveur, with which her husband and brother are associated, Mrs.Stein was known to a wide circle and had friends in many sections of the community. She was born and educated in Montreal and at Compton Girl's School and at Dana Hall, Massachusetts.Among her interests were the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the Combined Jewish Appeal for both of which she did volunteer work. She is survived by her husband; three children, James, Robert, and Anna-Lise; her parents, Mr.and Mrs.Stanley A.Vineberg; and a brother Stephen, all of Montreal.Burial was in Shaar Hasho- mayim Cemetery.Miss M.D.Mitchell Funeral services were held on Monday in the Church of the Ascension of Our Lord, Westmount, you and flayed you, by the living God that made you, you're a better man than I am, Gunga Dehn!” A FAILURE The old man was nearly dead and would be dead in three weeks, when he walked — and he could barely walk — to the microphone in the presence of almost all the notables of Fleet Street, even those who hated him and were soon to say privately they might attend his funeral ‘‘only to make sure he is dead."* But at this gala banquet of 600 guests assembled in his honor at the Dorchester Hotel in London, Lord Beaverbrook, knowing well his breath would last mere weeks, did manage to walk fro mhis wheel-chair to the microphone, in front of the television cameras.Well, m’lord, said the interviewer, would you say your life, overall, has been a success or a failure?A failure, said Beaverbrook, almost every policy I have advocated has failed. Then he made a brief, self- deprecating and marvellous speech — almost unanimous opinion here — a great man at his zenith, or one of them, that night.Did someone whisper, “Off you go, Max, old boy.Last chance now.Chin up! surprise no one.If anything they appear low, to judge from what has happened since World War IT.Canada's trend to urban dwelling con tinues. The birth rate.particularly in Quebec, may be dropping, but is formidable. The death rate continues at only a third of that for births. And immigration is on the upswing. This means more and more people pushing into the cities, particularly for Montreal — still the greatest of them all and destined so to continue.Montreal, of course, increasingly becomes more than the geographical domain of Jean Drapeau: it embraces and overspills the Island and rapidly is embracing in its hegemony a vast territory from the U.S.border well into the Lau- rentians, and from the Ontario border to Three Rivers.Redevelopment and dramatic change in the core city reflects the role of dynamic nucleus. But disturbing is the absence of leadership in the region of its undoubted influence, beyond its city limits, of the Montreal administration. We'll concede that the enormity of the problems of its own leaves little of the machinery of the central city's government and or the time of its imaginative mayor, executive and council available for the broader area.Little is heard these days of lack of cooperation by Montreal with neighboring municipalities.Earlier rumblings from the Drapeau-Saulnier team were that the only solution to the problems of the growing megopolis was to take over and absorb the suburbs under one big local government. These threats now are rarely heard.Even so, the Montreal Metropolitan Corporation likewise continues a virtually impotent agency for inter -municipal cooperative action; its role remains largely meeting ground and debating forum. It is too much to expect that area problems can be met and solved from above, by Quebec. The Provincial Government has its own vasl jurisdictions without taking on deeper involvement in local-regional matters. There is, therefore, a vacuum.Beyond vast highway improvements in the area (thanks largely to Expo) and the building of the Metro subway system, co-ordination of broad roles between the proliferation of municipal regimes shows little evidence. What will be conditions under which 3,400, 000 or more Montreal- area dwellers will live 15 years hence?Westmounters want to get more concerned. They surely shall be affected. Can a minister be a good MP too ?[5 it possible that a community rep resented in Parliament by a minister of an important department is not getting its entitled attention?Take Westmount. We seldom see Mr.Drury, and when he comes to Montreal it is usually hurried on important business with little time for his constituents.Even when he does a little local politicking, it often is a closed session with party stalwarts.Such a gathering was held a month or so ago, when Mr.Drury complained that the Liberal Party was not getting sympathetic coverage from the press .but neglected to inform this paper even that the meeting was being held.We realize our member is doing an important job for the country but it would he nice to hear what he has done for Westmount. You Say in the dark Sir: From the citizen: layman's viewpoint, it would seem to me, that the key’ to the City of Westmount's “Rehabilitation” and over-all “Replanning”’ and “‘Redevelopment” survey.is obviously hidden away within the confines of, at least, three “priority" civic elements or civic guidances.1 suggested and submit to my fellow citizens, that these three elements are: 1) The Canadian Pacific Railways and their right-of-way — in Westmount: (2) The West.mount Summit- Park area: (3) The Potential ‘‘annexation’’ of St.Henry and Notre Dame de Grace acreage, for civic expansion of Westmount. The topography, the gcog- raphy and economie-social orgy of Westmount.all are closely involved in the above survey.now in motion.(Ed.note .The survey, is now complete, and has been for some weeks.) 1 am serious, and 1 believe 1 am correct, when | say, that on these important points, not a single press release has appeared from the authorities con- concerned. The people are kept, allegedly, in total darkness and in ‘ignorance’, of these important civic matters.I suggest sir, that from here in, a realistic reply ought to be available to the press and to an impatient and heav- ilv taxed public.soon.A.J.Livinson 114 Blenheim Place A way of life ?Sir:— It seems to be a way of life in Westmount for grown teenagers to cycle on the footpath. It does not require prophetic vision to forecaste a serious accident ‘or acoi- dents) probably to some elderly person who is not able to move out of the way quickly enough, and who is going to pay for the medical and hospital expenses ?It is very unlikely that any of these teenagers have third party insurance.J.Ramsay Stewart 235 Metcalfe Avenue Biography of Streets Ramesay road CONTRIBUTION BY THE WESTMOUNT HISTORICAL SOCIETY This is the second article on Ramezay Road.Last week's installment dealt with Claude de Ramezay, who had become governor of Montreal and was looking for a suitable site to build his home.He found this in the eastern section of the city. The land he bought for his home, was on Notre Dame street and faced the then garden of the Jesuits, His architect and contractor was Pierre Couturier, with whom he arranged the house should be built 66 feet long and 36 feet wide.but these dimensions were later increased. The Chateau was built on a double lengthwise vaulting. The walls forming this vaulting were three and a half feet thiek at the base.and increased in thickness towards the vaulting roof, permitting a bake oven to be built in the thickness of the wall, and chimneys in the kitchens for heating.THE FAMILY The de Ramezay family was very highly regarded in new France. Not only was their father, as governor of Montreal, highly esteemed, but their mother, Maria-Charlotie Denys de la Ronde, came from a large and important family.Madame de Rame- zay's brothers, sisters and cousins were intermarried with the nobles( familes of the country, so that the Ramezay's children had a very large circle of relations.De Ramezay himself came from an old Scotch family which had established itself in France, and which had considerable property. In 1701 he submitted his claims to have his names of his descendants on the list of nobles, filed in Paris, the earliest document he produced being dated 1532, These claims were recognized and he and his children were authorized to assume the rank of nobles, and, “to enjoy the privileges, honours and exemptions, which gentlemen enjoy." De Ramezay's Scotch origin is not difficult to explain as the French and Scotch had looked upon England as a common enemy at that period when de Ramezay's family was already established in France. Many Scotch nobles fled to France to escape imprisonment or death, and were gladly reccived in that country.Claude de Ramezay and his wife had a family of sixteen children, but only one son lived to carry on the name. The eldest son, Claude, was killed while fighting in Rio- de-Janeiro.Another son Louis, was killed at the age of twenty-two while joint.commander of an expedition against the Cherokees in 1716, A further blow was sustained by the family when Charles.another son, a captain in the army, was drowned when the ship was returning on from France was wrecked in 1725.JEAN DE RAMEZAY Jean - Baptiste - Nicolas - Roch - de - Ramezay.born in 1708, was the second to last child born to Claude de Ramezay and his wife, and was the only one te carry on the family name.At the age of twelve he became an ensign.his father having him trained in military duty in the Montreal garrison. In 1726 he went to Niagara with the rank of lieutenant. There the fighting was against the English, and two years later against the Fox tribes. He became a captain in 1734, and was sent from end to end of the country on confidential missions.Later he held the position of commandant at one of the posts on the Hudson Bay.distinguishing himself by bis military and diplomatic skills. He was later decorated with the cross of Saint Louis, This son of Claude de Rame- zay continued his highly successful career by being appointed to the command of the troops in Quebec City.So well did he fulfill his duties that in 1758 he was commissioned ‘lieutenant du roi’.But shadows were soon to fall on his career.Like his father, the younger de Ramezay had enemies.(Continued on page 9) ACROSS 8 Man's 1.Sanskrit nick- school name 4.Talk 4.Kind of 7.Remgin arch 8.Algerian 5.Tract seaport 6.Wedding 10.Crowns announce.11.Met ment performer 7.Oriental Before his death, moreover, Montcalm, had drawn up articles for the capitulation of Quebec, and had in- stucted de Ramezay to avoid above all an attack on the city.while striving for the best terms possible, and buoyed up by word of supplies of food on the way, de Ramezay waited two days.A petition was signed by most of the men of any standing in Quebec, urging capitulation to avoid famine, and finally the sack of the city.Deserters went over to the English hourly.Consulting his lieutenants in this crisis, de Rame- zay decided that there was no other course of action but to obey Montcalm’s instructions.Accordingly he sent an officer to the English with the terms of capitulations proposed by Montcalm. The Quebec garrison was accorded, “the honours of war”, and the inhabitants were permitted to retain their religion, their goods and other privileges according to the terms given by the English Permitted only onc hour t make up his mind, de Rame zay signed the terms.By the terms of capitulation, .de Ramezay, as commandant.and his officers and soldiers, were sent to France in 1759, Madame de Ramezay stayed behind with their daughter.(To be continued next week) | | | museum directors to invite him to take on the job.And so, Dr.Lismer, alrcady at that time well known throughout the world for his experimental work with children came to the Gallery solidifying what had begun so shortly before into what is now a strong force in the world of Art education. As we talked we became conscious of a small movement at the door and a five year old walked carefully into the studio “This is Elizabeth, the children have their own place just here you sce, their own dishes and stools, everything that is needed to set up housekeeping”.The small back porch we saw was as much a child's world as a bees’ hive is a bee's, Three milk bottles contained the fam- Îly's ‘wine, milk.and cream’ Elizabeth showed us, no water though the liquid looked amazingly clear to the uninitiated. We discovered that there were four others this season, the children of nephews and nieces, and that they also had a ‘studio’ with younger painters’ work on the wall, shelves for materials and a large open door where theatrical performances could take place.“The audience can be either inside looking out on a panoramic outdoor set, or outside watching a domestic comedy, ‘I knew that this building would never have a chance to shelter my car”, Ann finished with a laugh and Elizabeth joined in.TL gg À We see and hear ARRAN © We hear from Allan M.Mitchell of Lac Brulé ‘after he read the Clarke Avenue story of ‘Biography of Streets’ in the Examiner), that therc is a descendant of the Clarke family living now in Santa Barbara, California; that we will soon get paper dresses in the supermart, and we are looking forward to that too: and that while skirts are still short local gals are decorating their knees, We only wish that the designs they are painting on the joints showed more originality.+ + * @ We hear from Miss Alice Lighthall of Metcalfe Avenue that the Westmount Historical Society is not dead but resting at the moment, and is expecting to be very active soon. The society is responsible for the very popular series of biographies on Westmount Streets that the Examiner has been running for some time, and also for saving the beautiful Hurtibise house from the demolisioners. She also told us that the Heritage Trust (for all of Canada), grew out of this local struggle so that now many historic buildings will be preserved for the future.Speaking of the future Miss Lighthall is finding the interest shown by students of Westmount High most rewarding as she guides them in their efforts to find out more about the city of Westmount in the early days, and we understand from others that a most interesting exhibition of early maps and artifacts is on display in the foyer of the school. This project was sparked by Dr.Helene Saly who teaches French in Westmount High School.Hungarian born, Dr.Saly was surprised that her pupils knew so little of the beginning of their city and asked Miss Lighthall to help. The result has been the formation of an enthusiastic group of students, who are finding that the place they live in has made history in Canada.Centennial project for grades 11 and 12.a hstory of Westmount. It should be well worth reading.EET JUN George Pickrell GUARANTEED FLOWERS Tel.: 935-5431 — Delivery Anywhere 4154 St.Catherine Street West A new Wollensak recorder packed with features.NEW WOLLENSAK “1220" « VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL OPERATION + OUTSTANDING TAPE FIDELITY + TAB-CONTROL CONVENIENCE Who else but Wollensak could have developed such a top quality tape recorder at such a low price!
