cent years, Clarke Avenue be-' low Sherbrooke Street has more and more taken on the aspect of a major thoroughfare. In the morning, eastbound drivers use it to get from Sherbrooke Street to Ste.Catherine or Dorchester Boulevard; and, in the evening, the same hordes, on their way home from downtown, literally race from Avenue de Maison- neuve, Ste, Catherine, and Dorchester north along Clarke to Sherbrooke and Cote St.Antoine, in the hope of crossing Clarke and Sherbrooke on a green light. The flow of traffic at non-rush hours continues only slightly abated. All this rapid movement in two directions by all types of vehicles at all hours on quite a narrow street would be jangling enough on the nerves of any group of householders in a similar position, Bul more than just nerves are enda- gered by this traffic. For, in the short distance along Clarke from Ste.Catherine to Sherbrooke Street, are located three churches (The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, St.Leon, nd the Ascension of Our Lord) and one school (St, Leo's Academy).Clarke is crowded as well with other children going to and from Westmount High School on Ste.Catherine, and St.Paul's Academy and Selwyn House on Cote St.Antoine, Clarke Avenue is, therefore, not merely a near-racetrack for hurrying motorists; but il is also a pedestrian thoroughfare for children attending four schools in the immediate vicinity and for children and adults attending weekday and weekend services at three churches.Although one might argue that the schoolchildren are in classes during peak rush hours, observation proves otherwise. They go to school during the morning rush hour; they go home for lunch and often engage in play on the edge of the road during the noon- hour, when motorists are hurrying back and forth; and after school, they are still in the process of walking home and horse-playing during the ‘‘five o'clock rush”.In view of these circumstances, I would like to inquire of the Westmount City Council, on behalf of the residents and children, what steps are necessary to have Clarke Avenue made into a one-way street (either north or south), at least between Avenue de Mai- sonneuve and Sherbrooke Street. This question should be answered soon, in the interest of all concerned.A position may be prepared if required.Yours respectfully Elizabeth E.Wilkins (Mrs.Robert C.) Editor's Note: This is a copy of a letter addressed to the Mayor and City Council of Westmount, one, least of all the increasingly vocal group calling for non-confes- sional education. What of the Jews? What of nonbelievers?Mr.Bradley and the Protestant Committee would do well to make a more forthright exposition of their intentions, so that it may be studied and discussed, rather than let a matter so close to the sensibilities simply leak out, incomplete, from the suburbs and exurbs.C.M.DRURY YOUR MP OTTAWA REPORTS FROM “The medium is the massage.” This slogan of Marshall McLuhan, the Toronto professor of communications, ir probably the most quoted Canadian saying of the sixties, It sums up McLuhan's belief that the medium through which we receive information affects our They Say Hidden living costs For publicity-seeking pundits today, a most popular crusade is the criticism and exposure of items in the rising cost of living. It is an important facet of economic life, and one which touches every person in the land.In a brief to the touring Sen- ate-Commons committee on, consumer prices, the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce recommended that Canadians should be told how much they are paying in direct and indirect taxes. It also recommended that there should be a study in depth determining how much is syphoned off by tax gatherers from producer to consumer, “For each dollar that a company pays out to its shareholders or retains for future development,” the brief stated, ‘it pays oul $1.04 to the government in corporation tax, This happens at each step along the way from producer to consumer of which the consumer is only vaguely aware, if, indeed, he is aware at all.” One recent speaker has said: ‘‘Reading the committee’s interim report makes it clear that what may have appeared to be a beautifully simple solution (blaming rising food prices on advertising and packaging costs) did not stand up to scrutiny.Even before the latest increase in federal sales tax the Economic Council of Canada stated that idi- rect taxes ‘may have conceivably accounted for somewhere in the vicinity of a quarter of the overall increase in prices in Canada over the past few years.” “This remarkable conclusion has been received in silence, If it has been received at all.’ — Delhi ‘Ont.)
