Service The sun made an appearance but the temperature was down.A cold wind kept the flags on their poles fluttering and waving. The hundreds of people attending remembrance services at the Cenotaph on Sunday must have blessed the intuition that had them dressed warmly.Standing in front of the Cenotaph to pay their respects were Mayor Michael Tucker DSO and members of the city council. Both Minister of Industry Drury and Richard Hyde M.P.L.for Westmount, were in attendance. It was the official Commemoration Service of the City of Westmount - remembering the dead of two World Wars.Conducting the services were Captain the Reverend Canon J.N.Doidge chaplain of the Royal Montreal Regiment, Captain the Reverend B.A.Jones chaplain (Continued on page 13) Commission Merger Fact Board Awaits Quebec Decision on Date The solution to the St.Leon de Westmount School Commission's proposed merger with the Montreal Catholic School Commission came peacefully in recent weeks after the stormy debate that led up to it.The St.Leon de Westmount commission is too small to implement the suggestions of the Parent report regarding secondary education and unless its merger with the larger Montreal body had gone through it would not have been able to comply with the Ministry of Education’s edicts on schooling at the high school level. Both the Montreal commission and the St.Leon commission were in agreement on the need for the merger.Problems arose objected strenuously and loudly.Montreal City Council felt that the merger would be unfair to Montreal residents as they would supposedly have to assume the added load of supporting St.Leon’s two schools in West- mount.Despite all the fuss and confusion an agreement was reached with Montreal and the merger will go through. The plan is currently being studied by Provincial Education authorities. The only question still open is the exact date that the merger will go into effect.St.Leon de Westmount officials are hoping that the merger will be retroac-' tive to the first of July 1967.However, Quebec authorities could reject this date in favour of a July 1968 alternative.WMA meet is set for Dec.12 December 12 was set as the date for the Westmount Municipal Association’s annual general meeting at the Association’s executive meeting on Tuesday night. The executive was fortunate in obtaining the Expo movie ‘‘Montreal 2000’ along with the services of Mr.Desautels Montreal’s Director of Planning as commentator, for the annual general meeting.Air pollution was a topic of discussion at Tuesday night’s meeting. It was reported that the Association’scommittee on air pollution is working with the City of Montreal’s authorities.Air pollution as a result of contamination from buildings is being closely watched by Westmount, however it was pointed out that City officials havelittle control over pollution emanating from vehicles as this is under provincial jurisdiction.W.M.A.membership to date was reported to be in the area of 1800 people. The Association strongly urges all Westmount residents to join and points out that membership in the W.M.A.is one very good way to take an active participation in City affairs. Also discussed was the crosswalk situation particularly at certain dangerous intersections such as Victoria and Sherbrooke and Greene and St.Catherine.The current density of traffic in the City was discussed and it was agreed that steps would be taken to ameliorate the circulation problem.Readers Question Wording of Verse Following the printing of an excerpt of poetry on the front page of last week's Examiner, the Examiner office was treated to a series of calls pointing out a variety of error in the excerpt. The poem, used to mark the passing of Remembrance Day 1967, was reprinted from a former issue.A reporter was dispatched post-haste to the Westmount Library to determine the origin of the piece of poetry and to verify the accuracy with which it was reproduced in last week's issue. The excerpt was taken from Lawrence Binyon’s ‘‘For The Fallen”’ and with the exception of one word was printed correctly last week.Following is the section from which the excerpt was taken: LAURENCE BINYON (1869- ) From For the Fallen They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor Nov.28 there's life on the old street yet The calling of demolition tenders for Selby Street by the Provincial Government has again raised the question of a further extension of the evacuation deadline for Selby St.residents.In a recent Examiner survey of the area it was discovered that approximately twenty families are still staying on.Some families are staying in hope of obtaining the full price for their property before leaving. Most however, simply cannot find suitable accommodation elsewhere. The problem of suitable accommodation is understandable.Selby St.residences, although old and perhaps out of style, are well-built and subscribe to the city's code of building standards.Selby Street, was one of the very few areas in metropolitan Montreal where a flat suitable for six or seven persons could be had for eighty dollars a month. The City of Westmount has done all possible to aid in the relocation of Selby families and has spent considerable time and effort in the search for the elusive ‘suitable accommodation’.The number of peoplereferred by the city numbers in the hundreds but no records are kept as to the number of families actually accepting referred housing. The city is under no legal obligation to relocate the families and is operating from a strictly humanistic motive.Apparently the ‘deadline extension’ question is also academic.Authorities claim that no deadline has been extended past the original September 30 date. All further extensions have been non-official.A constant problem on the street now that the majority of the residents have left is the danger of fire.Several families were living in upstairs flats with the downstairs flat unoccupied. These families would not have had sufficient warning of a fire in the building. The Fire Brigade, with tenants’ permission moved most of these families into lower flats inan attempt to consolidate those residents left on the street and thereby to minimize the fire hazard.Despite rumours of further extensions and reprieves Selby Street is evidently doomed to the scheduled demolition.Deadlines for demolition tenders is November 28.Actual demolition work could start as soon as a week after the deadline.Residents seem unconcerned with this news.Although most avow that they’l! be long gone a few stalwarts maintain that they'll ‘be hanging on and these could go right to the wire resulting in baillif action.Westmount Home and School Attendance a Record 800 Monday night's record-setting meeting of the Westmount High School Home and School Association opened with the Association's President Mrs.Fletcher welcoming the record eight hundred people in attendance.’ In her welcoming address Mrs.Fletcher commented on the great co-operation always shown between parents teachers and the school board. She pointed out that the election of a new school board is imminent and also commented on the fact that since 1919 all openings in the school board have been filled by Westmount Municipal Association nominees acclaimed to the posts.Mrs.Fletcher stressed the increasingly active role which parents are being called up to play and the need for close co-opera- tion between parents and teachers. She stated that the next meeting will be held on January NEO-NAZI MARS SERVICES Westmount Remembrance services were marred slightly by a man insisting on reading aloud from a Nazi booklet. The man held forth until a citizen alerted nearby Westmount Police.Police picked up the man and questioned him. After checking his identity Police High School principal Mr.N.Hamilton.Mr.Hamilton expressed his delight at the record attendance. He then commented on the fact that Parents, Teachers and Administration working together can contribute a great deal to the students’ education.Mr.Hamilton also discussed the many outside pressures that act on today’s student. As examples Mr.Hamilton pointed out the ever-growing pressure on the student to succeed academically and to follow up his high school education with courses in university.Entrance requirements are getting tougher and so pressure on the student is increasing. He also mentioned that despite over-emphasis on the part of news media, drugs are a problem. He pointed out that any child might experiment with drugs without the parents actually realizing what was going on.Following the address by the principal, a group of students (Continued on page 6) Index Churches .10 Classifieds .14-15 Editorial .4 Sport .lé Women's .11-12-13 "EY reste er ree 149004090004 98 increasingly devoted to pollution underscores yet another area where inter-municipal cooperation and common concern must be focussed.Particularly air pollution. For noxious fumes know no urban boundaries. What befouls Montreal's, or La- chine’s, or LaSalle’s atmosphere may equally well and, given the right or wrong winds and other weather conditions, sometimes affect Westmount even more.By and large, Montreal area municipalities have made great strides in controlling the undesirable pollutants turned out by factories, chimneys, incinerators, etc.The real enemy, growing each year with urban concentration and the numbers of motor vehicles, is the internal combustion engine. The experts tell us that the accumulations of carbon monoxide and hydro-carbons in our city streets frequently reach danger levels and that, unless determined action soon is taken, we are confronted with emergency conditions. There is an overwhelming case here for the cities and towns of the Montreal region to join together in a very obvious common action which otherwise may be considerably longer coming from other parts of the country. That is: Bring utmost pressure to bear on the Federal government to impose in the shortest possible time upon the automotive industry the mandatory installation of fume control devices on all new cars, trucks and buses sold in Canada. The effect of such legislation would not be long in being felt, since a relatively rich area such as Montreal and its neighbors is where a high proportion of each year's new vehicles are placed on street and road.New cars lead the growth of vehicle numbers increases each year, while a commensurate number of older, offending vehicles are retired or scrapped.Surely such legislation, already adopted in California and some other states, is due here.Best effect would be nation-wide imposition of control devices; that is, by Ottawa.Only the most seriously affected areas, such as ours, can lead the demand. And it will require co-operative effort of as many urban municipalities as can be mustered if the traditional lethargy and indifference to such problems of a still rural- -dominated Parliament are to be overcome.Westmount, its pleasantness and desirability as a place to live undeniably threatened, might show leadership in this matter and initiate the action - and gain the kudos. Why leave it to St.Laurent, St.Leonard-de- Port Maurice, or even Montreal?Did You Know That .The Westmount Golf Club petitionned the City Council to remove a contagious disease hospital from the mountain and allow them the use of the land.in 1909 Westmount Police gallantly denied the rumour that a venturesome lady from Upper Belmont had become the first woman driver in the Montreal area to be fined for speeding The ‘Voor Het Kind" series of semi-postals issued yearly by the Netherland Antilles have long been popular for their unusual design, culminating with the 1965 series depicting underwater scenes photographed around the islands. There is no doubt that this outstanding set did much to stimulate tourist traffic to the Antilles. However the designs of this year's series, to be issued Nov.15th, take an unusual turn, depicting four ‘‘Nanzi Stories.’ What are the Nanzi Stories? They are the enactment and miming for over a hundred years of an assortment of weird African myths added to which a number of Caribbean voodoo tales all put together by a talented Spanish tale weaver.| The central character the Nan- zi, a spider, symbolizing the sun, diety of health, destruction and even seduction, appears in this series a super hero, a swindling cheat, a sly confidence artist and a generous benefactor:- 6+3c, ‘‘Princess Long Nose’’ - Nanzi with a diabolical desire for revenge, sells three magic apples to King Arey, which cause the royal noses to grow, then collects a fantastic fee for curing them for the King and Queen and leaving the Princess with a long curved nose; 10+5c, ‘‘Turtle and the Monkey” - In a plot to satisfy his pregnant wife's peculiar hunger, the eating of the heart of her husband’s closest friend, Compa Monkey, the turtle lures his pal on a river crossing with the intention of drowning him.The monkey, however, cleverly explains this is impossible as he always leaves his heart on a coatrack at home before taking a trip. His friend thereupon carries him back to shore; 20+10c, ““Nanzi and the Tiger’ - King Arey offers a huge reward for the capture of a tiger that has been raising havoc, but no one but Nanzi is willing to take the risk.Through trickery Nanzi induces the tiger to give him a ride into the camp of the King, where hidden soldiers take the tiger prisoner; 25+11c, ‘‘Shon Arey and the Balloon” - Compa Nanzi, anxious to get the throne suggests that the aging king take a vacation balloon trip, which results in an accident over the Caribbean, where the king is saved from drowning by a fisherman.Printing is by multicolor offset by Joh.Enschede & Sons, of Haarlem, Holland and as usual the semi-postal’s sur-tax will be used for the support of the several child welfare and caring institutions on the six islands of the Netherland Antilles. There is no doubt that this issue will be of great interest to the collector of ‘‘Folklore’’ on stamps. In earlier columns it was noted that many countries would be issuing postuage stamps to commemorate the beginning of Martin Luther's reformatory movement 450 years ago.On Nov.4th Finland issued a 0,40mk stamp portraying Luther after a portrait by Lucas Cranach the Elder.Printing was by a combination of photogravure and intaglio.* gy 1A Your From C.M.DRURY MP Reports Ottawa This column is not about high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance.1 suppose most Examiner readers know as little about that subject as I; but if you wanted expert information or advice about it, you could turn to Dr.William Schneider who has written a book on it and who recently became President of the National Research Council.Dr.Schneider, who earned his Ph.D.in Physical Chemistry at McGill in 1941, has enjoyed a distinguished career in scientific research and administration. Before becoming President, he was Vice-President in charge of fundamental (‘‘pure’) research. The Council is engaged in a vast array of pure and applied scientific, engineering and medical activities, many of which have unpronounceable and, to a layman, unintelligible names.(What do you make of lipopro- teins, fibrogenesis, cryoscopy, microbial matabolites, differential monometry, photodegreda- tion, neutron dosimetry or neo- thiobinupharidine?) Others have a more familiar ring - egg yolk proteins, plant tissue culture, and snow loads on roofs. In this column, I will mention only two NRC projects, a contribution to Expo and the life of a satellite tracker. Many of you may have visited the unusual looking ‘‘People Tree’ which stood in front of the main Federal Pavilion on Isle ‘Notre Dame.It was a six-storey structure carrying 1500 nylon panels, on 500 of which were printed photographs of Canadians.A special type of dye was developed by NRC which would not fade in outdoor weather conditions or weaken the fabric. The inflammability of nylon offered another challenge.By using a new printing procedure, applying a special finish, incorporating flame-resistant (but “non-prinfa ble) strips in the hems and sewing with an expensive new thread, the desired effect was achieved.I wonder how many of the 50 million visitors appreciated the ingenuity which went into this exhibit.About 13 miles north of St.John’s, Newfoundland, NRC has set up a satellite tracking station, one of 13 which make up a world-wide network. In its six years of operation, it has provided information on 55 different satellites, including the ‘Canadian Alouettes I and II.An average satellite is in view of the station at predicted times for as long as 20 minutes on each orbit.Such a passage will be repeated three or four times at perhaps two-hour intervals followed by a much longer period in which no passages occur within the station’s range. Thus, on certain days, it is possible for the station to be handling six to eight satellites involving 30 to 40 separate operations.A typical day’s operation for the 24-man station staff, working in three shifts, would include 20 recordings of the positions of satellites, 20 passages during which data are received from the satellites (and, on about half of which, command signals are sent to the satellites) and perhaps half a dozen camera shots of reflecting or flashing satellites against star background. It sounds like a most unusual job.Bulletins from Birdland Pellets By Winifred E.Wilson What does the word ‘‘pellet’’ make you think of?An ice pellet?À pill?Shot? We are thinking of a food pellet which is disgorged regularly by certain kinds of birds that go under the heading ‘‘carnivorous’’.It is indigestible food neatly wrapped into a little parcel and has the general appearance of a greyish cocoon.Scientists, biologists, ornithologists, and just ordinary birdwatchers find it very useful for finding out exactly what our predators eat.It proves to the general public that there actually are very few birds that go into the class called ‘‘harmful’’ or ‘‘injurious’.Nearly all these meat eaters are beneficial. All Owls, Accipiter Hawks, and several other birds such as Gulls and Whip-poor-wills bring up pellets by mouth.Owls serve as a very good example. They can be watched all year round as many of them stay in Canada throughout the winter.Like many other birds, Owls have their own favourite perches, and this is useful if we are interested in food pellets because we can be pretty certain that all found under one special tree must come from one individual.Being predators, no other species would want to come inside that territory; and only the mate of that particular species would be allowed there.Owls remain for a long time on the one perch, sleeping away the hours of daylight until darkness comes and they fly about finding food.Owls catch their prey in their feet and swallow it whole unless it is so big that it has to be torn in pieces. The nutritious partis absorbed. But before more food is eaten all hair, fur, teeth, bones, feathers, scales (in fact anything that cannot be digested) are rolled into a solid, elongated ball by the action of the muscles of the stomach, and regurgitated. These pellets, made up of the remains of so many undesirable animals, prove beyond doubt that Owls are beneficial birds. The remains of mice and rats are most often found in the pellets of the great majority of Owls. The little Screech Owl that often stays right in the suburbs of our large cities keeps on a varied diet, the exact animal food depending upon what is most accessible: beetles and moths, birds, frogs, crayfish, snails, reptiles, fish, bats, ans small mammals. The Great Horned Owl goes for larger prey: skunks, opossums, cats, rabbits, and.quite big birds .- all supplemented by mice and rats.= The Westmount Examiner, Thursday, November 16, 1967.— 5 Westmount imaginative and the dancing was flawless.(Continued from page 1) Following the display parents played a trumpet fanfare written were invited to tour the class- and directed by Mrs.Florida.rooms and to meet the teachers. Then a group of the girls put on.a display of rythmic dancing.the blowing of train whistles His Worship Mayor M.Tucker shown presenting cepting the trophy on behalf of St.Paul's Aca- the first place trophy for the children’s plant demy.competition to Miss Lesley Roberts who is ac- - e bY = * -0 w v | % * v On Three Levels ate stage offered at the Westmount YMCA.3.Advanced Level - offers instruction in life saving, skin scuba and master swimmer, speed swimming, and representative team swimmer. These courses are carried on year round in the Y.They are not just seasonal events. As a matter of interest, the Y was the first organization to design a structured swim program and has been moving forward for almost one hundred years. Many years of implementation and a high standard of instruction has made this program suc- In the past many people both youth and adult have participated in the Westmount "Y" Swim- i 1 Mr.R.Panet-Raymond presents the Panet-Ray- .i .mond Trophy to Peter Bronfman who is accept- f 4 ing the award for Roslyn School.) j { 3 } Aquatic Program hi "4 - 3 39 The YMCA has produced a 1 1 swimming program for the pur- « KE .= b> 3 pose of developing sound water id = | safety habits and recreational ap — | aquatic skills., Basically, the aquatic program shough faucet's leaky } works on three levels.1.Begin- She kno nervous | ner - designed to give the stu- i * bin we re tops - dent confidence in himself in the ; The tea and the coffee you drink will have a flavour you never knew.Be a ‘’softie’’!
