INVOLVED IN ART EVENT: Taking active part in the 11th annual outdoor art exhibition and sale of paintings Sept.12 and 13 at Stewart Park, Pointe Claire, are, left to right, Roy Wilson, an artist; William Grandin, chairman of the exhibition for the Lakeshore Association for Retarded Children; Ron Simpkins, another artist, and Mrs.Marian Grandin.Art exhibit and sale readied; aid retarded On Saturday and Sunday, Sept.12 and 13, from 10 am until 5 pm, at Stewart Park in Pointe Claire, the highly successful combination of the Lakeshore Association of Artists and the Lakeshore Association for Retarded Children will present for the 11th year their annual outdoor art exhibition and sale of paintings. One third of the purchase price goes to LARC.The purchaser, pays the regular price and the artist donates the one-third.The two groups have worked together very well with no contracts or formal guarantees on either side.A clue to this long- term arrangement lies in the comment by one of the artists, “Artists make notoriously poor managers and organisers, and the LARC take over this responsibility completely—all we have to do is be there with our paintings.” None of the artists have retarded children, but the executive of 11 years ago believed that retarded children received the least public support. The Lakeshore Association of Artists was formed about 15 years ago ‘‘to promote art at the professional level,” and they have striven to maintain this philosophy since.Out of the total membership of 45, about three-quarters are professional painters who support themselves entirely by their art.Members are admitted only after a jury committee evaluates three representative paintings. The backgrounds of the artists are as varied and interesting as any such group anywhere. The Genuine Choice Western BELEK QUALITY IS ECONOMY HAINES OF WESTMOUNT "Noted for Quality” Purveyor of High Class Quality Meats, Fresh Killed Poultry, Groceries Fruits Examiner, Thursday, September 3, 1970 Barbarians defeat Westmount 9-6 at Rugger John Peters, who took sports scene by storm Westmount visited the Farm on Saturday with Alouettes trialist John Peters dressed and hoping to guide his club to victory.Alas Westmount were defeated by the Barbarians 96 and, ironically, Peter's failure to kick the goa was the deciding factor.Westmount began sensationally by scoring in the first minute: good work by the forwards led to Ebden and Nichols opening the field for Mountain to stroll in for a touchdown. With the stiff wind at their back, West- mount wasted chance after chance to increase this lead.Just before halftime, another good ball from Ebden, aided by Scott, saw Moxey galloping over in the corner for a 6-0 halftime lead. The second half saw the pattern change with Westmount holding on to their lead. The forwards were being outplayed while the three quarters dropped more balls than they caught.Whilst Westmount sought to find a solution to their trouble, the Barbarians caught up and then in one long swoop stole the game: two fries and a penalty goal closed it 9-6.This was a thoroughly disappointing defeat as Westmount should have won by 10 points. Now, three wins are required to put Westmount into the playoff picture and the first win could come in the return fixture against the Barbarians on Wednesday at the high school.MSRMEN?Although apparently unsuccessful, to George Springate, MPQ, in his bid to join the Montreal Alouettes as resident place kicker, Briton-cum- Westmounter John Peters and his rugger playing feet have taken the Montreal sports scene by storm in the last week.Yet few Westmounters probably know exactly who this 160-pound Westmount rugger player really is.John Peters came to West- mount four years ago to continue his schooling at McGill University.Already under his belt were 18 years of life—seven of which he spent much of the time on the lush, green playing fields of his native England.John was an all round sportsman but cricket and rugger were the two he excelled at.Being an individualist it was not surprising to find that when his team required a kicker, John was the man to turn to.Moved to Canada On leaving school his family moved to Canada and John came to live in a small apartment in Westmount. It was only natural for John to hunt for a rugger team and eventually, when ™ GORDON INC.— 481-9151 — 481-0892 — ta draft dre brebis | walking in Westmount Park, he met the Westmount squad ‘and joined the club. After one game, it was clear to Tim Tatman, the Westmount captain, that here was a player with class and the answers to his prayers—a man who could kick goals from all distances (a must in rugger where a penalty is three points). In no time John was playing for Quebec.Rugger took much of his time but still John found the hours to practice another talent—acting. He is a natural comedian (perhaps this explains his a pearance at the Autostade wearing long hair, beard, fluffy hat and cape) and a top-class serious actor: this year he is president of the McGill Acting Society.Became ‘Hippylike’ This summer the problem of all students caught up with John— finance. So he deci ed to travel to Toronto where the rewards were fast and good. His appearance became hippylike and John was almost persuaded to audition for the controversial musical “Hair.” On returning to Montreal, he was asked to play in the annual 6505 ST.JAMES, W.(At Cavendish Underposs) The Boat Has Docked! - upstart shouted, = "a 'Way Ahead’ Rotarians hear about work among underprivileged By Ed.Gannon Work being done to benefit underprivileged families and individuals, particularly the younger element just beyond the lower fringes of Westmount, was explained in interesting detail by Connie Darling, director of the Way Ahead Program of Dawson College to members of the Westmount Rotary Club yesterday at their regular meeting at Victoria Hall.Versed in the problems confronting the district, through experience gained as a youngster in the lower east side sections of New York City, Mr.Darling explained his problems here and the manner in which solution is sought.“The problem today is to give a child a chance to change his environment and to do this we have to work with the community as well as with the children of the district.” Mother then become co-operative, he said, and the work begins to mesh with a result that the children get the benefit.Pushed out of homes Many children of the district had been virtually pushed out of their homes by their parents and left to their own devices, but through a series of steps the back alleys of the district were supervised and mothers were trained to look after children properly .A free school with a baby sitting service has been organized and block community services established for the benefit of the children.“There are over 200 children in the district and we go into the back alleys to establish communication with them.Possibly out of 100 cases we would attract about 40.Instead of recreational games we set the children to work on college and other activities. We also centered our activities on block projects,” he said.Mr.Darling explained that a federation of co-operatives is being formed to lower prices in purchasing necessities.A woodworking shop has been established, supervised by fathers in the district, while a sewing pool at which 30 teenagers attend for instruction in making clothes is at present in operation.A community job centre has been established while a service centre will givetlse residents help in legal and economic problems.Thievery Problem Petty thievery is the main problem among teenagers while coffee houses furnishing rock and roll have helped in diverting the.activities into useful channels.A co-operative movie house is being formed with equipment being provided. It has been found that street festivals involving parents as well as children have produced successful results and the aim now is to unify efforts of all for the benefit of most.President Andy Durso reminded members of a full attendance needed to welcome the district governor on his visit to take place next week.Jack Burrows plugged Dunany Day to be held on the 23rd at which guests will be welcomed. Two new members are urged to attend.Donations of prizes would .be most acceptable for the occasion, he reminded members.Dendy introduced the speaker wie was thanked by President 0.16 - Thursday, September
