thus, the burden fell to aldermen in general committee to approve or reject the grant. The flying of the appeal’s flag over city hall during the campaign is in no way related to the donation, according to Ald.Douglas C.Robertson, who said yesterday this was simply agreed to at the request of Federated Appeal officers. The flag is also being flown over civic buildings in other municipalities, he noted, as well as above corporation buildings. This year is believed the first time the flag has been raised over Westmount’s city.hall.Help the / Red Cross through Federated Appeal April 1-30 JEWELLERS WE.3-4046 1216 Greene Ave.CITY € JOUNT | Bi » PERMET NE doing The following building permits were issued at city hall during the past week: April 3 #05 Upper Belmont: for L.Tarshis by Rene Binette Ltee., to instal a gas burner and {wo hot water tanks, $500; others, the news and local leatures break nicely—as they did last week —to give us a well-rounded special issue. Our thanks to those who have told us so.+ + + EDITING à local paper is not always a bed of roses. The proprietory interest mentioned above causes some readers to offer free advice. For example, there was the woman who phoned Monday and told us that West- mounters like to keep a low profile and don't appreciate having their names in print. It turned into quite a conversation, including a little homily that people make up a community, that names make news, and that hiding one’s light under a bushel is not always a high virtue.More particularly, she second-handed to us the view, held by some others we know.that real estate transfers were the business of no one but the individuals concerned. The lady ended.we think, with a better appreciation of a more widely-held view that in a property- conscious community such as West- mount, the shifts in values (currently rising sharply) of real estate are of vital concern to every property owner—that it is the individual transactions, of similar or of neighbouring properties, which reflect on the values individuals might place on their own holdings.Time and again this has proved invaluable to persons contemplating buying or selling; our sales of back copies containing these listings are evidence that the publishing of transfers is an appreciated public service, and an unique one to The Kxaminer in this part of the country.- Gathering the data is no cinch.Since the MUC absorbed Westmount's valuation department, a month's transfers require a whole day's digging. And now we are having difficulty even getting access to the raw data.+ + + THEN.late on Monday came the letter on this page signed by Mrs.Barbara Moore as chairman of the Westmount High school committee. This is a prime example of why some newspaper people become crusty and cynical.Readers will recall how we featured on our tront page, back in February, an idea raised in the school committee that the WMA education committee might be of service in determining why some Westmount parents send their youngsters to schools other than WHS.Not only did the WMA education committee fail to pick up this interesting challenge—in keeping with its year-long inertia—but a WMA vice-president, who is also on the WHS school committee, asserted that the remarks as reported never were made. His motives for this extraordinary stance in question of The Examiner and of a mature.experienced reporter remain obscure.Nonetheless when the indifference, indeed negative position, of the WMA was thus ‘made clear.we decided that the question was one which many Westmounters might ask and that The Examiner might usefully.if not revealingly, find some answers. The result of Reporter Andy Dodge's inquiries appeared in a major teature in this newspaper a fortnight ago.The answers were not all black nor white.Westmount High, in the views of some, has its shortcomings but.even among those who send their boys and girls to private schools, the old Purple and pa WHS school committee Sir: At the School Committee meeting held April 4, 1974, the following motion was passed: ‘‘ that the chairman be requested to write to The Westmount Examiner to bring to their attention the inaccuracy of their headline, and that a copy of the letter be sent to the Westmount Municipal Association.’ The headline referred to is yours of Feb.14, 1974, issue entitled: ‘School Committee asks WMA to find out .Why don't you send your kids to Westmount High School?” The suggestion to ask the WMA was one, of many suggestions made on the Voice of appreciation Sir: As the member of the Westmount High School school committee who made the suggestion, at its February meeting, that the reasons why many Westmount parents do not send their children to the high school merited study, I feel I should congratulate you on Andy Dodge's report, in your March 28 issue.; The attitudes and beliefs that the community has about itself —and particularly about the high school —are an important part of living in a community. If they are positive, then life is pleasant; if they are negative, then no one tries to make the community work. All members of the high school committee are working to improve the operation of the high school, within the limits set by government policies. We are aware of many things that could be improved, but ‘some of our severest critics are the people who do not send their children to the high school; ” finding out their reasons may well lead to finding out other needed improvements.Un the other hand, and this emerges clearly from Andy Dodge's article, many of the beliefs widely held about Westmount High (its large size, for example) are actually myths.I would like to thank you also for providing Mr.Hamilton with the space in your columns to rebut the accusation that there are no sports at Westmount High. The ‘‘ratio’’ problems of WHS however—the fact that there are 18.4 students for each teacher—are inescapable within the public system of schools. In short, 1 would feel that the encouragement of public debate provided by ‘The Examiner has been of great service to the whole of Westmount.1 hope it will lead to much wider participation by parents in future meetings of the school committee.I personally feel that the occasional slight errors of reporting that creep into the best-regulated newspapers—and your reporters misreporting my suggestion as though it was a motion by the whole committee, was a slight error—is a small White has its defenders. Many persons who have commented to us on the article were impressed.Even Principal Noel Hamilton, in his letter published last week, thought only that his school’s sports program—despite the teachers’ extracurricular activities boycott— deserved more credit than given it by some parents. His only other clarifying point was on the length of suspensions meted out under PSBGM policy.+ + + IMAGINE our surprise, then, to read of the nit-picking resolution passed by the school committee last Thursday night (we did not have a reporter there) which did not even mention the effort of The Examiner but, instead, reasserted that no formal request has been made for the survey.Frankly.we don’t give a hoot.We are grateful to the school committee member who did, despite another's mysteriously motivated denial, make the suggestion: our reporter who picked it up: our second reporter who did the Job: and the many readers who thought it was a good and worthwhile effort.Just possibly the whole episode demonstrates the value of a local newspaper when the business of the municipal association and of the most important school committee get caught up in picayune hair-splitting.You ET HY Say and that parent survey numerous topics discussed at the school committee meeting of Feb.7.This suggestion did not result in a formal motion, nor was there a consensus to pursue this idea.No decision was actually made to request a study by the WMA as reported in the above-mentioned article.(Mrs.W.M,) Barbara Moore (Chairman - The School Committee, Westmount High School.587 Lansdowne Avenue, Westmount, M3Y 2V7 ce: Westmount Municipal Association for survey of parents price to pay for the increased public awareness that the press provides.Consider yourself graded B for accuracy, but A for effort, and for effect.Richard Salisbury 451 Strathcona avenue, WESTMOUNT, H3Y 2X2 (Editor's note: Our thanks to Mr.Salisbury, who is vice-chairman of the school committee, for his encouragement and appreciation. Our foregoing editorial comment on this matter was written—because of an early deadline this week—prior to receipt of his letter.) TM lecture next week, high school “A Unique Method of Dealing with the Stress of Modern Living" is the subject of an introductory lecture on transcendental meditation here next week.Several new teachers of the science of creative intelligence and transcendental meditation recently have returned from Europe where they studied with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of the science.Among the new teachers is Mark Mouledoux, 4459 de Maisonneuve boulevard west.He will be lecturing at Westmount High School at 8 pm on Tuesday.Transcendental meditation or TM as it is known, is not a religion or philosophy and does not require faith, years of discipline, or in fact any change in life style. The benefits of the practice begins to be felt, it is claimed, in increased vitality and health of mind and body.TM is not done for its own sake but for its value in life and activity, its value in reducing stress.Stress is one of the greatest obstacles to sustained individual .progress and developemnt. Its tool on health alone is severe. As the pressure of rapid change and responsibility mount, solving the problem of stress becomes imperative.TM is a technique to reduce stress. It is a simple natural technique practiced for a few minutes morning and evening as one sits comfortably with the ‘eyes closed.During this process, scientific research has shown that oxygen consumption and metabolic rate markedly decrease, indicating a deep state of rest. This releases deep rooted stress and tension in the nervous system and results in improved health, energy and efficiency in action. The Introductory lecture will explairm-in more detail what TM is and what benefits each individual can gain from the practice.TM talk Laurie Sluther, who teaches transcendental meditation at McGill University, was speaker on “TM” at yesterday's West- mount Rotary Club weekly luncheon meeting in Victoria Hall.Watch those snow tires Close calls, like sliding through an intersection and narrowly missing a delivery truck, can be terrifying. It couldn't happen to you, you say, because you have snow tires on.But have you checked those tires recently for wear or damage?Should you start to skid, take your foot off the gas and steer in the direction of the skid by turning the front wheels in the direction in which your wheels are sliding.Give your savings a real lift Move them into a high interest savings plan at Canada Permanent Trust. The percentages are in your favour.CHEQUING ACCOUNT Handiest way to keep track of your personal 2 O budget.Pay bills by cheque and you have a record. No charge on any reasonable number of cheques.NON-CHEQUING ACCOUNT 1 This savings account pays a high interest rate 4 O because we want you to keep your savings building up with us.Although cheques are not available, you can withdraw funds at any time.TERM DEPOSITS Canada Permanent’s Term Deposits offer our highest interest rate with complete security and convenience.Terms and rates vary from 1 to 5 years.Highest rate quoted above.A SAVINGS CERTIFICATES 1 Cashable at any time.Interest payable only 4 when held for more than 2 months.Issued only O for a 5 year period.Interest rate increases according to length of time held.Highest rate quoted above.superb investment.*All rates subject to change without notice 1326 Greene Ave., Westmount - 931-7554 D.B.Lane, Manager Member - Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation.CANADA PERMANENT TRUST Complete Real Estate Facilities are available to you by calling JOHAN DRAPER, FRI, Manager 4014 St.Catherine Street West 937-9291 SALES, PURCHASES, LEASING ® Offices Across Canada e Transferee Plan e Mortgage Financing e Residential, Commercial, Industrial Use Our Guaranteed Sales Plan If you are interested in à real estate career we would be glad to discuss it with you.¥ I BRANDT PLUMBING Company Limited (Ron Toohey, Proprietor) ‘Serving the West End for Over 17 Years’ 24-HOUR SERVICE STEVEN G.AYRE, M.D.General Practioner Omnipraticient 3415-Vendome Ave., Tel: 481-1108 for appointment Office Hours: 9a.m.to 12 noon 2p.m.to5p.m.Tues.& Thurs.evenings 7p.m.to9p.m.Better electrical work, our current affair For industrial, commercial or residential installations, - modifications, maintenance and upkeep call us at: 935-1131 Electrical Contractor, 1206 Notre Dame Street West.Montreal 102 IRVINE FLLCTRIC INC "]
