to aid study The Greene Avenue Village Association has been incorporated as a non-profit company with the name Greene Avenue Planning Corporation, it was learned this week.A drive for funds has reached $1,200 in contributions of individuals ranging from $2 to $50, with a target of $6,000.The funds are earmarked for printing and “communications” in connection with a study of the area being undertaken by the citizens’ group, concerned with preservation of the character of Greene's shopping district and environs.Mrs.JoAnn Issenman, who sparked the group originally, is president of the new corporation.Tim Grosvenor, an architect member of the group, said yesterday that the July 2 meeting held with the City of Westmount architectural and planning commission was encouraging. The city experts had pledged their co-operation and continuing interest and it is hoped to have further meetings from time to time, including a showing requested by the commission of the group's slide presentation, recently seen by the Westmount Municipal Association advisory council. The slides were shown Monday afternoon to a group of Greene CEGEP LIPers reading decibels avenue merchants, all of whom have joined the association.Mr.Grosvenor also reported that preservation of the former post office building at Greene and de Maisonneuve boulevard seems assured, with an intergovernmental committee agreeing with Hon.C.M.Drury that the department of public works should dispose of it only for reuse of the present structure. The Greene group hopes that the use will be by a restaurant or some retail establishment, which would infer longer hours than would, say, offices.Mr.Grosvenor said that the Westmounters may have seen two men at various St.Catherine street locations taking decibel readings to find out what sort of noise is being created by regular street traffic. The two are part of a study funded as a Local Initiatives Project and co-ordinated by CEGEP It is nothing more than simply to require the MUC to bill Montreal for extraordinary police services incurred for the Olympic Games.Mr.Drapeau is reported as suggesting that neighboring municipalities will benefit from ‘‘economic spin-off” from the games. Before buying that argument, Dr.Goldbloom might ask Mr.Drapeau to explain what benefits may accrue to Pierrefonds, or even closer-in Westmount.A little reflected glory, maybe; but what revenues?Dr.Goldbloom’s portfolio is supposed to function for the benefit of all municipalities—not only Montreal.Mr.Drapeau once more has gulled Dr.Goldbloom, this time into ripping off the suburbs. We have never been consulted, let alone asked, about the Olympic caper.Even so, start watching now for the inevitable big bulge in 1976 MUC assessments, our own city council's pitiful explanation of the inevitable jump in the tax rate, and for the tax bills which inevitably will follow. You'll be paying them. And remember with all the gratitude you can muster that happy threesome: Messrs.Drapeau, Choquette and Goldbloom, back there in July 1974.Hon.C.M.Drury says.Post-election euphoria The next five years hold great potential for Canada as a member of the world community, following the re-election on July 8 of a majority government under Pierre Elliott Trudeau.2, Canada, as I mentioned last week, is in the enviable position of having a strong majority government that will be able to tackle, without interference, the problems æ IT’s enough to give a place a bad name.In this continuing era of reverse snobbery, Westmounters will be prone to avoid in shame their friends from Town of Mount Royal ($24,247), Beaconsfield ($19,457), Sillery ($18,871), Cote St.Luc ($15,564) and Outremont ($14,390) to say nothing of Victoria, B.C.($8,543), Valleyfield ($8,537) or Montmagny ($8,148).For Statistics Canada has revealed, from the 1971 census, that our city has the highest average family income of any community in Canada of over 10,000 population.Adding in proceeds from Junior’s (if he is over 16) paper route and dog-walking, sister’s baby-sitting; big-sister’s summer waitressing, big- brother's pick-and-shovel job, mom's spare-time typing and dad’s salary plus bonus plus dividends plus retainers plus fees, the average Westmount family had to get by on $25,377.The image, of course, is a bit distorted: there are some Westmount family incomes so huge that they overbalance the numerous ordinary folk who give Westmount its wide social and economic mix— so little appreciated or understood outside our borders.Fie on Statistics Canada! .+ + + WE like the smart idea, for Dominion Stores and the Kidney Foundation, whereby the grocery chain will exchange $1,000,000 repairs to the concrete structure.Reason for the work is the considerable deterioration of concrete which has taken place since the lookout’s construction in 1932.” Five Years Ago July 17, number of American scientific establishments before going to the rocket-firing site,” de Maisonneuve folks protest (A copy of the following letter has been sent to The Examiner:) Mayor Paul Ouimet, City of Westmount, Westmount, Que.Dear Mayor Ouimet: The decision by the City of Westmount to succumb to MUC pressures and permit the use of de Maisonneuve boulevard west as a two-way artery between Lansdowne and Claremont avenues is completely unacceptable to the undersigned residents of the area affected.Without prior consultation with residents, the city has denied the residential nature of de Maisonneuve boulevard and its feeder streets below Sherbrooke street.Arbitrarily, bus routes have been placed on a street too narrow to carry such traffic.Promises of westerly bus traffic only are a myth. There is a constant easterly flow of large intercity buses. The street already has become a truck route in both directions. The safety of children, pedestrians and senior citizens using educational and recreational facilities in Westmount Park apparently has been ignored. The City of Westmount has shown a lack We Say.Continued from page four cards close to its vest it says that the sports to which the creation of this three- member junta will apply itself are ‘wrestling, boxing and any other sport determined by the lieutenant-governor in council’—meaning, once again, the all-powerful cabinet.Try this for size, should you be thinking of organizing, say, some 12-year-olds to learn the manly art of boxing: “No person who does not hold a permit in force shall: (a) organize a match; (b) operate an establishment; (c¢) film a match or present it on a screen; (d) take part in a match as a contestant, or as a manager or second of a contestant; (e) take part in a match as a referee or umpire, judge, time-keeper, physician, inspector or master of ceremonies.’ Heard enough?+ + + WHAT'S there to do?Well, this summer the volunteer guides, many of them Westmounters, of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts once again are conducting walking tours of Old Montreal every Wednesday at 11 am starting from Place Vauquelin. Then at St.Donat, well known to many Westmounters as a summer retreat which also is celebrating its centennial, has a “Peoples’ Art Exhibition” going daily except Mondays through to Aug.11.And the Foster Horse Show de Maisonneuve boulevard west area by imposing on the environment in which - they have chosen to live standards, in the name of change, which ignore socioeconomic and human considerations.Immediate steps should be taken to develop a plan which is compatible with the needs of residents and the growth of tre community. This should be done in consultation with concerned citizens. An early meeting to discuss the problem would be greatly appreciated. For further information please contact Mr.or Mrs.R.Follett, 4727 de Maisonneuve boulevard west, 937-5587, or Norah Cassidy Frood, 4721 de Maisonneuve Mrs.Kremer’s protest against the decision of the Westmount parks and recreation department to phase out chairs at the Westmount pool.Until reading Mrs.Kremer’s letter, I had presumed the lack of chairs at the pool was due to a repair program as in past years. Now we are getting to the seat of the matter—a unilateral decision by the department of parks and recreation on the grounds of expense. This type of chair retails for approximately $4.50 each.Even at 20 percent off, the minimum allowance for bulk purchases, the cost of 100 chairs would be around $350.Surely the department or financial expert Ald.Leeds Nelson can find this piddling amount from the large array of figures they trot out with smug satisfaction at budget time.Equally ridiculous is the other reason given for the removal of the poolside chairs—no other pool in the Montreal area supplies chairs. Not having time to check other municiplities, 1 agree with Mrs.Kremer that poolside chairs are special because they serve a useful purpose for old and young residents.Sitting or lying on cold, hard cement or hot, hard cement is not an ideal health situation. So Westmount taxpayers, now is the time to get off your ifs, ands and butts to protest against this removal of the “seats of the mighty.” 235 Metcalfe avenue, WESTMOUNT, H3Z 2H8 (Editor's note: Parks and Recreation Superintendent B.A.Rothwell yesterday said that there was no intention of depriving pool users of seating and that suitable perimeter benches were being designed to be built in the city shops. These could be in place this season, he thought, The ban on individual deck-type chairs had Jack Marsters The Westmount nothing to do with cost, he added, except that they required constant repair due to rough usage. The real problem was supervision, particularly of youngsters who used the chairs for other than their real purpose.A number of accidents and many cuts had been suffered from jagged ends of broken chairs; thus the question was fundamentally one of safety, particularly of youngsters, he told The Examiner.) Prince Albert proposal raises more objections Sir: With respect to the proposed development plan for the Prince Albert avenue bakery site, I wish to point out that the nearby residents on de Maisonneuve boulevard are likely to be more affected by it, than those of the SARA area. This is because the proposed rezoning of the area to allow a high rise on the north side of the boulevard would not only further destroy the residential nature of the N the teaching factory.typesetting division a gs will meet all your typesetting tration.Examiner, Thursday, July 18, 1974 - 5 street, but might well set a precedent enabling further such developments in the area to be permitted.Secondly, all traffic access to the development is to be from de Maison- neuve, thus increasing ‘the alread horrendous volume of traffic on this road. Our council has failed to consult with ordinary de Maisonneuve residents not only in this respect, but also with the recent opening of the road as a major traffic artery.May I ask that the interests of de Maisonneuve residents be taken in to consideration in the future and that they be fully consulted about all developments affecting their area?Although for the next two years, the MUC and the City of Westmount have ruled that de Maisonneuve is not a residential street, in actuality it is lined on both sides by houses and a few apartment buildings and no official ruling can alter this fact.(Mrs.R.)
