[" Group forms to save St.Stephen's A group of about 25 people met Tuesday night in an effort to save St.Stephen’s Church from impending sale and demolition, announced in last week’s Examiner. The group, which met at the church itself, had already collected about 100 signatures on petitions to protest ‘the sale; most of the signators were residents of the immediate area of St.Stephen's, including Weredale Park, Clandeboye and Greene avenues and Stayner and Prospect streets.Present at the meeting were church wardens as well as local Miss Alice Lighthall, immediate past president of the Westmount Historical Society, proposed that the group petition Mayor Paul Ouimet “to do everything necessary to preserve the building.” Last night the issue was discussed extensively at the meeting of West- mount’s Urban Renewal Implementation Advisory Committee, which approved a proposa! that the church site be rezoned to come into conformity with the other buildings on Dorchester boulevard in Westmount. It was ‘hoped the whole texture of the vestige of what was once a luxurious residential street. An executive committee was formed on Tuesda¥ night to co-ordinate efforts to save the church, and will be making representations both to the Anglican Diocese and to the city.Members of the committee include John “Turk” Blanchard, 21 Prospect street; Jarvis de Conde, 2276 Souvenir avenue, Montreal; Michael Fish, 39 Cote St.Antoine road; FE.H.K.Greer, 2134 Tupper street, Montreal, and Susan Rice, 25 Stayner street." At both meetings ideas for re-use of participants noted the church wardens had been concerned only about the building's declining as use as a church.Ideas ranged from refurbishment as offices to its use by 4424, Inc, as a youth centre.- Miss Jane MacLaren, 25 Prospect street, who was present at both meetings, suggested cost of refurbishment for offices might be about $20 a square foot, however. The Tuesday meeting was not a protest meeting, Mr.Blanchard told URIAC members last night.‘We're simply asking the (wardens) to take a second look at what they're doing,” he explained.Z VAE A MONA street might be for motorists and pedestrians.Westmount received the praise’ of numerous radio and television commentators, in fact who compared streets here to surrounding Montreal byways, which were not so well prepared for a November onslaught.WINTER ARRIVES: Winter arrived with a bang just after 7:00 this morning, catching most .Westmounters completely by surprise, but obviously enthralling these youngsters playing outside Westmount Park School. The sudden blizzard was met head-on by the city public works crews and police officers, who kept traffic FOR THE WEATHER YOU WANT TODAY'S WORLD @ civic services have been downgraded since the inception of the Montreal Urban Community, Mayor ‘Paul Ouimet has told Prime Minister Robert Bourassa. This includes not only police, but other services as well.Indecent > assault An ll-year-old girl was indecently assaulted on Westmount avenue near King George Park at about 2 pm Friday. The young girl could not offer police much of a description of her assailant, except to say he was an adult male.Left turn nets injury A left-turning auto on Claremont avenue was smashed into and demolished by a truck at 2:22 pm Saturday; one person was injured. The accident occurred when Percy Yu Pui, 24, of 438 Grosvenor avenue, was driving north on Claremont in his 1972 Datsun, looking for a place to park.He saw a space on Chesterfield avenue, and turned left to go west toward it.As he did, a 1970 Ford truck moving south on Claremont driven by Alfred Cere, 31, of Fabreville, smashed into the right side of the auto. The collision totally wrecked the Datsun and caused considerable damage to the truck, Westmount Police report.Mr.Yu Pui received lacerations to his head and complained of a sore back; he was transported to the Reddy Memorial Hospital by police ambulance for treatment.Valuation up 6.8 p.c.The value of the city real estate has moved up 6.8 percent in the past year, according to the 1975 valuation roll deposited at city hall late Friday. The new roll gives Westmount property a total assessment of $391,942,562, up from $366,931,267 last year.Of the total, some $87,540,870 worth of property is non-taxable.The valuation roll, made up by the Montreal Urban Community, provides the basis for municipal and school taxes.Ald.Charles Aspler declared this in reporting Tuesday night on the meeting Montreal suburban mayors held with Mr.Bourassa and ministers Dr.Victor Gold- bloom and Jerome Choquette on Monday. The mayor, who had been at the Monday meeting but was absent from Tuesday's city council session, was quoted also as saying that “many Westmount citizens .were aware of the difficulties with traffic, especially speeding on the main arteries and residential streets,” caused by the reduction of services.Once.the formal council meeting had ended, Mrs.H.Vautelet, long an opponent of police integration, charged that suburban councils were looking for the ‘‘wrong thing" by asking Premier Bourassa for funds to supplement MUC costs, that they should “fight (the MUC) as a principle.” “If we do not police the errors of government above us,” Mrs.Vautelet declared, “we are headed towards dictatorship.” Mrs.Vautelet added that the MUC Sécurity Council was ‘in violation of its own laws” since it/ was not giving a clear explanation of its expenditures to anyone demanding this.Ald.Donald MacCallum, answering the outs poken MUC critic, said she would be pleased “‘up to à point’’ with the approach used by the mayors in Monday’s meeting and with the stand they will take as a result. The mayors ‘‘came out fighting,’ added Pro-mayor Charles Aspler, who also pointed to a statement by Dr.Goldbloom that “a better definition of regional and municipal services” was required to determine the role of the urban community. In the Monday meeting, Prime Minister Bourassa had promised a grant of $6.5 million to help defray 1974 MUC police costs, and had under study a provision for $90 million in 1975.Pension law amended City council amended the city staff pension plan Tuesday night in a move which had little effect except to make the program conform to provincial by-laws.The move allows more substantial amendments approved last year to become legally binding. 2 - The Westmount Examiner, Thursday, November 21, 1974 CHURCH SERVICES CHURCH OF YOUR CHOICE ATTEND AT THE ANGLICAN UNITED SYNAGOGUE CHURCH OF THE ADVENT WESTMOUNT PARK [TEMPLE EMANU-EL toda and the forthcoming season of vent.- New members will be received during the service and church school children and teachers will attend the opening portion of the service.During the coffee period after the service members of the congregation may secure tickets for the play.On Tuesday the Welfare Group of the Women of St.Andrew’s meet to complete their pre- Christmas knitting, sewing and crocheting.Christmas puddings will also be available for purchase.Plans are under way to observe Outreach Sunday on Dec.1.Guest speaker will be ‘Aliens Among Us' is Dominion-Douglas theme “The Aliens Among Us,” third and last of the series entitled “New Women, New Men .Aspects of our New Society” took place last Wednesday at the Dominion-Douglas Church.Problems of definition were apparent from the beginning. The word ‘alien’ can mean an un- naturalized.foreign resident, a member of a foreign nation, or one estranged or excluded; to alienate can mean either to estrange or to turn away; and the word ‘alienist’ was once used to describe someone skilled in the treatment of mental disorders.Roger Balk, the first speaker, discussed alienation as the state whereby a group of people become separated from the major goals ‘and activities of society. He spoke particularly of his work with the elderly in the Milton Park area, east of McGill University, stressing the need for better medical care for seniors in their own homes.Such people miss normal stimulation and affection because of the lack of concern and caring in society; surprisingly, students relate well to the elderly because, Mr.Balk suggested, they are not threatened by age.Ian Campbell, Dean of Arts at Concordia University, began with a historical survey, pointing out that in the past society shared a homogeneous experience, which leading thinkers were able to express — e.g.Thomas Aquinas, Calvin, Marx. Now, however, our society is so heterogeneous that no common perspective is possible.Dean Campbell's view is that it will never be possible again. There is no alienation, in his opinion, for there are no norms and no consensus from which to be alienated. This lack of defined stance is seen in the home, where a misplaced liberalism has failed to give children a clear model with which to identify or against which to rebel.Dr.Heinz Lehmann considered the Existentialist aspect of alienation, discussing the state of being separate and therefore alone. But to be alone is necessary for man to be creative; it is not synonymous with loneliness, which is a state of suffering.Dr.Lehmann pointed out that while to North Americans the word ‘alone’ suggests despair and anxiety, .Europeans associate it with stillness, beauty, serenity etc.In our society the majority have never beèn alone enough to come to grips with questions of identity and destiny, it is therefore the majority who are alienated.Giving a Christian perspective on the subject, Dr.Phyllis Smyth raised the question of whether Barbados members at St.Matthias’ St.Matthias’ Church will welcome members of the Barbados House Inc.at eleven o’clock on Sunday morning. The lessons and the address will be given by members of this association. From Friday, Nov.29 at 8 pm to Saturday, Nov.30 at 8 pm a diocesan vigil of prayer will be observed by the diocese of Montreal. For the churches within the deanery of Western Montreal this vigil will be held in St.Columba’s Church, beginning with evensong sung by the St.Matthias’ Choir.Rev.Norman MacKenzie, associate secretary of the United Church’s Division of Mission in Canada.A discussion.period is scheduled to follow the service.OUR there was a difference between an alien and an outcast. The latter, excluded by society, had played significant roles in history, including the Old Testament prophets and Jesus Himself.< Alienation implied resignation on the part of the individual. If an individual has a strong sense of identity and feels related to God and his fellow man, the fact that the label ‘alien’ is attached to him by others will not make him accept this with which we pin labels on ea other.Christians should strive to create communities, Dr.Smith felt, where differences really do not matter and the growth of an individual is supported by others who respect his uniqueness.“Abortion, Whose Decision?” is the topic of the next evening planned by the adult education committee on Thursday, Nov.28 at 8 pm.A panel discussion will feature the following speakers: Dr.Peter Gillett, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Montreal General Hospital; Ms.Marie Thibodeau, President, Fondation pour la vie; Dr.Harley Smyth, Department of Neurosurgery, Wellesly Hospital, Toronto.designation.One of the greate ’ dangers of our society is the 0 Learning fair The second annual learning fair of the Nursery School Teachers’ Right-of-way demanded from Tupper to Plaza Petitions are now being passed among residents of southeast Westmount asking the city to guarantee a pedestrian right-of- way from the west side of the Reddy Memorial Hospital to Alexis Nihon Plaza. The move follows erection of a barrier behind the now-closed Desjardins Service Station, 4084 St.Catherine street, which prevents pedestrians from climbing through the fence on their way to the plaza, and a flat refusal of city action by city council on Tuesday night. At the meeting of the Urban Renewal Implementation Advisory Committee (URIAC) last night, Mrs.Valerie Mezes sounded out Ald.Douglas Robertson for not succeeding in winning council approval to expropriate a tract of land for pedestrians.Speaking to a questioner following Tuesday's council meeting, Ald.Charles Aspler said he had surveyed the entire situation and found it was only 80 feet from the lane west of the hospital to Gladstone avenue, and that most pedestrians would take only 40 extra seconds by detouring to the city street.Ald.Douglas Robertson, who said he and his son had tried to walk the @ FOR M Ed AND PLYWOOD (JR AND.|_ INDUSTRY Le UE) RUTHERFORDS 932-7161 a ALI older people might take about 50 seconds walking to Gladstone, then another minute returning to the St.Catherine street entrance to Alexis Nihon Plaza. The slight inconvenience was not enough, Ald.Aspler felt, to goad the city into spending money to purchase a small strip of land in the area.He added that plans for the Royal Bank computer data centre being built between Tupper street and Dorchester boulevard would have a roadway directly opposite Clandeboye avenue, through which pedestrians could walk to make their way to Gladstone. The claims of Ald.Aspler did not convince Mrs.Mezes, who has been pressing for the guaranteed right-of-way for a year, and who says she has been using the short-cut for at least the past 10 years.Residents of Stayner and Prospect streets, Clandeboye avenue and Dor- chester boulevard all backed her, she said, but had until now been relying on her efforts to convince city hall, through URIAC, to ensure the right-of-way.Mrs.Mezes said this morning that she had told nurses at the Reddy Memorial Hospital she was now preparing petitions.they had told her to send them over as soon as they were ready — they would be filled in minutes.“I wanted to do this in a civilized manner,” Mrs.Mezes told Ald.Robertson in explaining why council has not received petitions on the matter.“I never wanted to bring the mob.” A suggestion by John Blanchard, 21 Prospect street, that the citizens claim ‘‘acquired rights” allow them to exact a servitude over the land has since been rejected, since the province has no law on the books covering acquired rights of free passage.During the URIAC meeting members passed a motion on the subject, this time asking ‘‘that the city reconsider the expropriation of a footpath from the laneway behind the Reddy Memorial Hospital to St.Catherine street .” Mrs.Mezes later asked Ald.Robertson at least to ensure that a gate be installed where the blockade has been erected, since the situation is now very unsafe for the inevitable diehards who attempt to climb over the fence.Prospecting Someone broke into a house at 25 Prospect street during the evening on Tuesday.Police are still awaiting a list of stolen goods.Fur away A fur coat was reported stolen from an apartment at 16 Weredale Park last night. An arrest has already been made in the case, Westmount Pro-mayor Ald.Charles Aspler noted that many people used the Roslyn School yard near his house.Mr.Dawe pointed out that the practice court and backboard did have a value for those waiting to get onto the clay courts, or waiting for tennis partners to arrive. Finally the councillors agreed to hold up contracts for construction of the new wall until further consideration could be given to the situation.3rigade, became its ont the C i ty ca | | i n g for demolition barriers The City of Westmount will try to ensure that barriers are put up around the demolition now under way on the northeast corner of Greene avenue and St.Catherine street so the lot, once vacant, F CITY COUNCIL does not become an eyesore or even a parking lot.The assurance was given Stolen, recovered A Plymouth automobile was reported stolen from the corner of Atwater avenue and St.Antoine street on Tuesday. The car was found early this morning, parked behind 11 Hillside avenue.Viewed theft The owner of a 1974 Buick saw his car being driven off by a thief from its parked position on Greene avenue near Westmount Square at 2 pm Saturday. Two letters Westmount has received two official pieces of correspondence in the past two weeks.City Clerk Ronald B.Seaman told city council Tuesday night. The first, from the Ministry of Justice, acknowledges receipt of council's recommendation that jury lists be taken from official electoral lists now drawn up by the pntreal Urban Community last + province each year.À second ar.Insp.Harper had a five-year tension ta his retirement ap- oved by council six years ago & ‘en he reached age 55.Last ar, a one-year extension was anted him, as it was again this ar.letter came from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, acknowledging receipt of the city by-law rezoning the site of the former Michele Provost Academy at 3219-3219A The Boulevard. The by-law came into force Oct.11.- Tuesday night by Pro-mayor Ald.Charles Aspler to a resident of Dorchester Boulevard, who warned that the lot may stand vacant for some time before construction begins.“I'm not sure if the city has any right to demand it,” Ald.Aspler said, ‘‘but we’re certainly going to try to get a barrier.” In answer to a related query from Fred Leclaire, Ald.Douglas Robertson said the province is now looking at an Ontario law allowing cities the right to declare ‘‘demolition restriction areas.” Under the law, a municipality would be able to refuse a demolition permit until plans for a replacement permit have been presented.Mondev Corporation, which owns the site on which demolition is now taking place, has not yet presented final development plans.Ald.Robertson agreed that the “proliferation of parking lots has been a disaster in the downtown Montreal area,” and he was looking to the new zoning by-law revisions (due to be made public next month) to ensure that parking lots would be restricted in Westmount.Runaway recovered A youth who had run away from the Shawbridge Boys’ Farm last Wednesday was found by Westmount Sgt.-Det.Norman Miles on The Boulevard Monday morning at about 10:30.Sgt.Miles, who recognized the runaway as having been involved in Westmount capers, brought him to the local police station for questioning, then turned him over to Montreal Social Welfare Court.345 Lan- BRANDT PLUMBING Company Limited : (Ron Toohey, Proprietor) ‘Serving the West End for Over 17 Years’ 24-HOUR SERVICE 761-4551 Why a : REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT?ww o Hedge against inflation lo] i e Income tax deferment (Interest free) | “ © Attractive cash flow A vw o Low equity requirement For future or current income, or whatever your objectives - we can help.Call or Write: Johan Draper, F.R.l., Manager 4014 St.Catherine Streef*West, Westmount, Quebec.H3Z iP2.Tel:- 937-9291.ICANADA PERMANENT TRUST HOUSES WANTED WESTMOUNT I¥ you should be entertaining the thought of the possible sale of your home within the next year, | would be happy to discuss this with you and appraise your home at today’s market value without obligation to you.MRS.RITA ANNE CONN 842-8251 - Res.: 937-4452 GUARDIAN TRUST COMPANY MEMBER OF THE MONTREAL REAL ESTATE BOARD — James H.Macintyre Ltd.D.Gardner Pres.Contractors Phone 482-4924-5 342-B Victoria Ave.Westmount = — Established 1913 Better electrical work, our current affair For industrial, commercial or residential installations, modifications, maintenance and upkeep call us at: 935-1131 Electrical Contractor, 1206 Notre Dame Street West.Montreal 102 IRVINE FLECTRIC INC “ "]
