[" Atlantic sail ends happily for local men Two Westmounters, an N.D.G.man and a resident of Hudson sailed their 35-foot sailboat Eminence Grise into port at Villa Moura, on tne south coast of Portugal, Friday evening, completing a three-week Atlantic crossing.Insurance broker Pierre Desjardins and urologist Dr.Douglas Ackman teamed up with Doug Daillie of N.D.G.and Richard Hamilton of Hudson for the voyage, during much of which they faced gale force winds and waves up to 20 feet high. The wives and children the men left behind were relieved to hear from the sailors that they had arrived safely.'*I was overjoyed to get a telephone call from my husband at 10 o'clock Saturday morning,” Mrs.Jane Desjardins said.Mrs.Patricia Ackman heard the exciting news from her 44-year-old husband on Sunday. The Eminence Grise, a Niagara 35, sailed from Nantucket on a starboard tack to the Azores. When they arrived at the eastern Atlantic islands, Mr.Desjardins cabled his wife, saying they would land in Portugal on July 4, which they did.Taking the port tack from the Azores, however, they fought strong winds all the way.Winds kept up at gale force 10 for 36 hours, stirring up waves 20 feet high. They landed Friday at Villa Moura, 20 miles west of Faro on Portugal’s south coast, after 21 days and 10 hours at sea.Mr.Desjardins, who was 45 yesterday, is well known in sailing circles, having competed in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. The Desjardins have two children, André, 16, and Claire, 15.The family sailed the canals of France in a smaller boat a few years ago.Dr.Ackman, who is on the staff of the Montreal General Hospital, gave a paper yesterday in Madrid and is expected home tomorrow, while Mr.Desjardins is hoping to fly home Sunday. The Ackmans have five children: Wendy, 21, Michael, 20, Bruce, 18, Connie, 6, and Jake, 5 Both Mr.Desjardins and Dr.Ackman are members of \\_ the Royal St.Lawrence Yacht Club.Birds died from poison: Pick the candidate suggestions about the city’s latest parking proposals.A notice of motion to present the law faced the vigorous opposition of Ald.David Carruthers, who received a sustained round of applause as he picked apart ‘‘the more restrictive and, I will even say, silly parts of this by-law.” An hour-long discussion of the parking regulations following the formal session ended in name-calling, open swearing, vows of civil disobedience and some citizens storming from the council chambers to hold a counter-rally in what has shaped up to be the greatest council-citizen confrontation in many years.; The heavy friction apparent even at the beginning of the session was not helped by council's method of dealing with the protesting masses: Mayor Donald MacCallum fielded offered a general discussion of what he viewed to be the problem, and allowed Public Safety Commissioner Ald.P.André Gervais, one of the main architects of the parking rules, to add some of his own comments. Many of the questions and arguments remained unanswered by the end of the evening, however, leaving a bad taste in the mouths of the desperate citizens, who went home discouraged at council's seeming inability to reason with them.Mayor MacCallum even suggested that he and council members (Alds.Brian Gallery, Muriel Kaplan and Alwyn Lloyd never said a word) were being
