SALE previously, and this will affect about 850,000 people, one third of them pensioners.Credits seem to be designed to favor Canadians at the lower end of the income scale and that’s fair.Initial reaction of many parts of the population, including middle- income families, is that the changes are disappointing and won't help much. And we'll have to wait to see what this will do to business and industry.Certainly, the press is not reporting any great expression of anger from that sector.I do not believe that the public is well served, however, when politicians chew up such far-reaching proposals (whether we like them or not) as mere political grist for the mill.At some point, all parties should be debating the facts in a more dispassionate, knowledgeable way, and presenting their analyses as free of political bias as possible.Instead, we are treated to hearing our “leaders” calling each other names like irresponsible children. It's not right, and serves only to increase confusion, uncertainty and lack of confidence among the people. How much time does the Opposition have to study the government proposals before they are debated?Without study, what kind of debate can we expect, but spur-of-the- moment reactions designed to bolster one’s political position?I think we could use some parliamentary reform, more than anything else, to get back to democratic government which represents the interests of the people who put them there for that purpose. And just one more thought about our press. We have one daily English newspaper, so we are very dependent on it for information. It took a lot of work to sift through all the articles on the subject to get what, it is hoped, are facts. Why could not The Gazette take one full page to list the details of proposed changes?Only in this way can we be knowledgeable — a goal which, I am sure, we share with The Gazette.Former resident Lofthouse to be Bonn science envoy Former Westmount resident Maureen Lofthouse recently was appointed counsellor (science and technology) in the Canadian embassy in Bonn, Federal Republic of Germany, and will take up her appointment in August 1987.She will be responsible for identifying and developing Canada/Germany exchanges and collaborative projects in science and technology involving both the public and private sectors. For the past three years she has been employed as a Senior Project Manager in the National Research Council's Industrial Research Assistance Program. There she was concerned with evaluation and management of projects involving the transfer of technology from the NRC, from other federal government laboratories and from universities to private industry. She was previously manager, technical services in the R&D divison of KHD Canada Inc, a subsidiary of the world's largest producer of air- cooled diesel engines, where she spent seven years as a member of the project management team responsible for development of a new family of air-cooled diesel engines for the North American truck market.Prior to that, she was at Pratt & Whitney Canada for eight years, where she worked on the development of various models of the PT6 turboprop engine, particularly the PT6A-50 engine for de Havilland’s Dash-7 STOL aircraft.Born in England, Miss Lofthouse graduated with a BSc in mechanical engineering from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, in 1963.After two years’ work in a hospital design team and three years in the R&D labs of a steel-making/engineering consortium in the U.K., she immigrated to Canada in 1968.She gained an MBA degree from McGill University 30% + Store Hours: Mon.— Wed.Thu.— Fri.Sat.RATTAN & WICKER SHOWROOM SALE We're making room for our new line of quality rattan furniture.every item in showroom.FREE PARKING 580 St.Croix (corner du College) Ville St-Laurent Tel.747-5232 50% off 10-5 pm 10-8 pm 10-5 pm L 7 / emanuel Y ungaro SALE fréal qué.h3g 1k4 tél.: 844-8970 , (1430, sherbrooke ouest mon De 7 N Tr TR PF ra" ro Maureen Lofthouse in 1975.She served as chairman of the Roslyn School Committee from 1979 to '81.She chaired the Women Engineers’ Committee of the engineering centennial commission, which in May 1987 celebrated 100 years of engineering as an organized profession in Canada. She was for two years president of the board of Women's Place/ Place aux femmes, a new women’s resource centre in Ottawa. In 1983 she co-chaired the second convention of Women Engineers of Canada, held in Montreal.Money strategists to host seminars Moneystrat financial strategists are hosting two seminars for women in the coming weeks. On Monday, a session on personal investment strategy is planned, from 5:30 to 7 pm; We'll miss you.Ted, Chris, Devon & Narnia HELP FIGHT KIDNEY DISEASE Continued from page five Death of a cyclist about clamping down on offenders I'm afraid counts for naught.is also awaited Sir: When I read your editorial last week titled “Waiting for a death,” a far more serious situation immediately came to mind and that concerns the cyclists in (and outside) our city.To my mind it is nothing short of a miracle that to date we have not had a report of one being killed in an accident involving a car — regardless of who was at fault.I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of cyclists I have seen stop at a red light and, frankly, have given up being annoyed by those who go down one-way up streets, ride on the sidewalks and ride on the left-hand side of the road — oftentimes in full view of a police cruiser whose occupants ignore the infraction.I believe strongly that cyclists do have a right to be on the road, as do motorists, but only so long as both obey the highway code: after all, the latter are punished when they do not.I am only afraid that it will take the death of a cyclist, perhaps at some busy intersection such as Sherbrooke and Victoria, to drive home my point, viz, cyclists should obey the highway code. All the talk we've heard recently OUR PSBGM.Continued from page five and national markets in order to finance itself and the boards. The council in 1973 assumed the long- term debts of the boards and has been mandated to manage and pay off this debt. The School Council was proud to receive a credit rating of AA- from Standard and Poor's recently — a promotion of sorts — which establishes the council's rating as equal to that of the province of Quebec.I am often asked how the school tax (raised through property taxes and limited to six percent of the school boards’ net revenue) is put to use for our children. This money, including special grants from the ministry of education to cover what are referred to as non-subsidized expenses, amounts to more than $58 million for 1987-88.The greater portion of this sum — over $42 million — is distributed per capita to the school boards.Part of the amount is used to finance the very important dossier of services to students from economically disadvantaged areas on the island.Six million dollars is specifically targeted to improving services for these children, so that they receive a more equal chance in education.More money has been set aside this year for nutrition programs in these areas.I will comment on this further in a future column.Suffice it to say that there are children who come to cu 1] WANTED Used furniture in good condition e Antiques CASH$$ V.G.C.Inc.735-4286 WANTED Photographic equipment and cameras EUROPEAN CAMERA 1108 de Maisonneuve W.(across from Peel Metro) - 844-1766" "| Wilfrid de Freitas 369 Kitchener avenue WESTMOUNT PQ H3Z 2G1 Return of Yelon eagerly anticipated Sir: Where, oh where, is Judy Yelon?— the best cartoonist in town.Have we lost her? With all due respect, H.M.is no substitute.Aline Gubbay 59 Windsor avenue : WESTMOUNT PQ H3Y 2L9 (Editor’s Note: Judy Yelon is bac from her vacation this week.) Dodgers post victories for league titles Thursday afternoon in Westmount diamonds was the setting for some truly outstanding softball in which the atom and peewee leagues crowned their champions. With the Cubs gone and the Expos eliminated last Wednesday, the stage was clear for the final peewee confrontation of the 1986-87 season. This game would hurl one team above the rest, a fact that both teams seemed to grasp before they took to the field. The Reds were first up at bat, led by captains Alexis Sparling and Chris Dedicik.Their spirits were high but that was not enough to put a single digit on the board. When the Dodgers came to the plate, they used their opportunity productively as they belted home four runs.By MARK SHANNON In fact, they called home four more in the bottom of the second and another four in the third, before the Reds could accumulate two in the fourth.Dodgers captains Etienne Julien and Tim Fleiszer were outstanding in their efforts as they led their team to a decisive 13-2 victory. When taken in perspective, their win seemed quite ironic, for they had been dealt a sobering 25-3 defeat but a couple of weeks ago by the very same team they defeated for the 86- 87 peewee softball title. While the peewees were wrapping up their season so, too, were the atoms. The Astros, coached by Peter KENWOOD’S MOVING & STORAGE (1986) INC.Move with “CARE” Local -
