The Westmount Examiner, Thursday, September 28, 1989 Westmount city council and the Architectural and Planning Commission are to blame for allowing Greene avenue to be transformed from a village of small local merchants to a combination of 5th avenue and Wall street, two former city councillors charge. When Peter Trent and JoAnn Is- senman were called upon at last Thursday's demolition committee hearing to give their opinions of the new building proposed for the southeast corner of Greene and de Maison- neuve boulevard, both took the opportunity to take the city to task for a trend they see as bad for the community. The demolition committee was meeting for the third time in two weeks, on this occasion to consider the application for a permit to demolish the two-storey row of stores at the corner and to replace them with a five-storey office building, effectively an extension to the Montreal Trust building at 1245 Greene.Asked by councillor and committee member Sally Aitken if he thought the new structure would enhance the street, Mr Trent responded, “I think it will enhance it architecturally, but I'm very worried about where Greene avenue is going sociologically. The issue is not enhancing architecture, but the character of our high street.“The building of a 22-storey tower (Chateau Westmount Square) was the behemoth of that street. It makes a five- or six-storey building look rather small.” Mr Trent said that when he and the previous council were downzoning the area in 1986, some members wanted to limit future construction on Greene to the existing building heights but a majority of council was against the idea, preferring to allow new buildings to rise four to six storeys.Mr Trent said the street has already been ruined, but that the council could salvage what remains by our current affair! Liberal Party all that different from the PQ?Have we any real reason to believe that they are other than just a little behind the PQ in their desire for power, unrestrained by any outside force? As for Meech Lake.Again the boogeyman: if Meech Lake fails to be passed, Quebec will separate. But Meech Lake should be opposed by every citizen of Quebec, regardless of background.Meech Lake would get rid of the checks and balances, the give and take. The inhibitions that the federal and provincial governments put on each other and that the Supreme Court puts on both are the restraints that make our democracy work for all of us.So lam proud that we said “no” to the Liberals.I know how profoundly many of us struggled with the decision. There was no bandwagon here, no hoopla, no real celebrating. We did what we had to do with sadness. It took courage, and courage — like appétit in the French adage — comes with the exercising of it.IT hope out of it all much good will come.Such as a new third political party in Quebec which all of us of all languages and cultures can join, a party dedicated to moving Quebec into the last years of this century and as an open, confident, co-operative society, one that welcomes creative talent no matter its origin and protects each individual citizen no matter his background. That I believe is what the Quebec people really want.LENNOX dealer since 1977 Specialists!” AMINER call 931-7511.The Westmount Examiner, Thursday, September 28, 1989 - 13 { | Bench and bus pole KO'd by out-of-control car A car jumped the sidewalk on the south side of Sherbrooke street west of Claremont avenue Sunday afternoon, demolishing a park bench and toppling parking meters and a bus zone pole.Neither driver nor pedestrians were reported injured as the car travelled westbound on the sidewalk before it stopped against a light post outside civic number 5012.Police said the accident occurred about 4 pm as the driver, a 56-year- old Montreal woman, appeared to lose control of the vehicle as she turned west from Claremont southbound.Public safety officers who accompanied fire apparatus to the scene said brake failure was suspected.A tow truck operator later drove the car off the sidewalk without further problems. The white Chevrolet Beretta sustained more than $500 damage to the front end and a shattered windshield. It Westmount-based company plays innovative Three Postcards Street People Theatre Company looks like Montreal®s newest theatre company, but the truth is it’s Montreal’s most recently refurbished professional theatre troupe. In 1984 Westmounter Paulina Abarca and a number of friends formed the non-profit company and successfully staged Talking With at Centaur Theatre.: But most of the company was still in school, so they decided to complete their educations or other professional obligations before putting on the next play. They chose Three Postcards, a cod izewinning (1987) musical play by à prizewinning author, Craig Lucas.Music is written by Craig Cornelia. From the looks of the show in rehearsal, and given the reputation oftheir first production, anglophone theatre audiences should do as much as possible to avoid a long delay before the fledgling company’s third production.Westmount connections There are a number of Westmount connections with this play.Ms also attended University of Toronto’s drama program. She was the recipient of .an Ontario Arts Council playwright- ing grant in 1987.Westmounter Jennifer Spencer plays Big Jane, one of the three friends. She gets to play a wonderfully vulnerable ditzy character, against Ellen Cohen, who has one of the most expressive faces I've seen in along time, and Belinda Trimble.Ms Spencer is a National Theatre School graduate, who was most recently seen in NTS productions as Meg in Sam Shepard's A Lie of the Heart and a countess in Figaro Gets a Divorce. The third Westmounter involved is Mark Morgenstern, a Concordia University graduate in communications and a prize-winning filmmaker. He is the technical director of the company, and has done sound and light design for this show.He modestly states that if fellow Westmounters know him at all, it is for a Hallowe'en house he designed several years ago that received coverage in THE EXAMINER.Steven Lecky, the vocal coach for the production, teaches voice in the drama departments of McGill University and Dawson College. The other cast members of Three Postcards are Brent Fidler and Peter Mika who play a waiter and piano player, respectively.During the course of the play, as the women slip into fantasy and remembrance, the two play various characters in their ives.Innovative theatre The company is dedicated to producing innovative, contemporary theatre. This piece is certainly that, yet it should be accessible to all.During the course of the play, the menu of the restaurant where everything happens is recited lovingly and in complete detail.During the run of the play, Restaurant Bonaparte will recreate this menu and serve it to theatre-goers between 5:30 and 10:30 pm.I recall cream of fennel soup and seafood mousse as the starters, with a choice of veal, steak, quail or fish asthemain dish. There was an extensive array of desserts, of which Choe- olate Sin Pie stands out, but the character chooses apple aspic.(The kitchen closes at 11, but there should be time to nip over after the play and still order dinner. They offer three courses at the fixed price of $29.95.) ; Curtain at the theatre is at 8:30, except Sundays at 7:30.So there should be plenty of time to dine (though the menu will have less meaning) before the show, which finishes in less than two hours. The restaurant is at 443 St François Xavier, next door to the theatre at 453.Restaurant reservations can be made at 844-4368.Affleck’s work focus of son Gavin's tribute This year the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada gave issued by the organizing committee of West- mount’s Family Week: You may have noticed a series of group “family” pictures in THE EXAMINER throughout the summer. These wonderful photographs have been leading up to Westmount’s participation in National Family Week, Oct 2to8.It is not without good reason that Westmount is taking this opportunity to celebrate and recognize the supreme importance of the family to society.Regardless of ethnic background, traditions, new models for a family of friends or a friendly family, everyone can enhance their day- to-day life as part of a “family” structure.Whether it is a traditional family, a single-parent family, an - extended family or a group with a sig ant commitment to each other, mZtmount is determined to encourage the family and its individual opportunities for security, growth and self esteem.Westmount has so much to offer families: schools, churches, beautiful parks, recreational facilities and programs, interest groups, libraries, health services, a variety of shops and restaurants, and all this withina healthy walking distance of down- , town Montreal. But all the services and good intentions in the world are useless if they are not known or if for some reason people feel excluded. The committee So a group of residents, representatives of community organizations, the mayor and Councillors Vineberg, Rothman and Aitken have been meeting over the summer to create opportunities.where information can be shared, needs expressed, and where people of all ages can come together to enjoy, learn and celebrate, helping to make Westmount a family of families for everyone. In this spirit, community organizations are opening their doors even wider and inviting the public to find out more about them. The West- mount branch of the CLSC Metro has planned something special for their" open house next Monday, Wednesday and Friday.Contactivity (a centre of activities and services for seniors) is inviting the community to see Aging can be fun at 2 pm next Thursday. The Westmount Children’s Library is going to focus its Wednesday story hours on the family. And our renewed Westmount YMCA is hosting a teen dance next Friday, as well as offering free access to a fitness class and family swim next Sunday. On Monday, Oct 2, high school “students will be debating “The family is the most important institution in society.” From this tournament, two debaters will be asked to join a panel of well-known residents and experts — Barbara Wainrib, Bonnie Klein, Héléne Papachristidis Holden, Robert Philippe and Westmount High School principal Richard Meades. They will continue the theme of the Monday debate. All are invited to come and voice their vision and aspirarions for the family as they relate to community (i.e.Westmount).This event takes place in Westmount city hall at 7:30 pm.The week will be wrapped up with a Family Festival on Saturday, Oct 8, at WHS — details were in last week's EXAMINER and will be in next week's.There will be something for everyone. The organizing committee hopes citizens will save Saturday for this very special Family Festival. For more information, call 935- 8531, local 212.— The Organizing Committee Students converge on SHS to debate a family issue Be it resolved that the family is the most important institution in society. This is the issue senior students (Grades 9, 10 and 11) will debate at Selwyn House School Monday as part of Westmount’'s Family Week activities. The winning team is invited to join Wednesday's panel discussion on “The family: changing roles and challenges.” One of the organizers of the event is Doug Peets, debating and public speaking coach at SHS and president of the Quebec Student Debating Association.Mr Peets is not sure exactly how many teams will be in the debate. He says invitations went out to all the QSDA schools and schools that have shown an interest in debating in the past — about 50 schools. In addition, Westmount High School and Kells Academy have been invited to register teams. The deadline for registration is this evening.Mr Peets says his role in preparing for Monday has been to invite the schools, assign students to act as moderators and timers (there will be, he says, 15 debates running si- (between Grey & Vendôme) La ef Da Wishes all their Jewish customers and friends a Healthy and Happy New Year 5108 Sherbrooke St.W.482-0607 multaneously), and picking the resolution.“Picking a resolution is very easy,” he says.“There are far more interesting things to be debated than there is time to debate them.” Monday's resolution was chosen to reflect the theme of Family Week.Mr Peets isa 1978 graduate of SHS.It was there he learned to debate.“I started in Grade 8,” he says.“It was the best thing I got out of Selwyn House.” Hesays he debated in his first year at CEGEP but then turned mainly to coaching. He’s been coaching the SHS debaters for 11 years.“Every now and then I do a demonstration debate,’ he says, “for show or entertainment.” He says he doesn’t need to be coerced into debating.“I like to stand up and argue.” In fact, he met his wife (they were married six weeks ago) through debating.Michelle Feder was a Trafalgar School debater who was chosen for the 1983 team representing Quebec at the Canadian Student Debating Federation National Seminar in Ottawa.Mr Peets was the team’s coach. The rest, as they say, is if staff cuts are effected as proposed. In a letter to parents sent home with all Roslyn students on Tuesday, school committee president Linda Stern said the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal has informed the school that it is overstaffed by 2.3 teachers.Principal Bertha Dawang, the letter says, has proposed removing the Grade 1 English stream teacher, one Grade 1 French immersion teacher, and reducing the hours of the French specialist.Mrs Dawang confirmed this. The French immersion students would be distributed among the four remaining Grade 1 classes. The En- e.stream children will have to ister at new schools. There is only one Grade 1 English stream class at Roslyn. Its enrolment this year is 10 students.Mrs Dawang said she recognizes that removing the teacher from that class and redistributing the students to other schools will probably spell the end of the English stream at Roslyn. If there is no Grade 1 this year, there will be no Grade 2 next year, and so on.LOOKING FOR CLASSMATES: Two 1974 graduates of Westmount High School are “It will disrupt the program for numerous classes if a teacher is removed from another class,’ she said Tuesday.“I have to make the decision that is best for the most and that is pedagogically sound.” Overestimated Mrs Dawang said she estimated an enrolment of 763 students for this year.In fact, the student body stands + at 690.Last year’s enrolment was 711.“If we had the same proportion of By KATHLEEN HUGESSEN staff to kids as last year,” she said, “we'd be okay. We'd lose one staff member and maybe a little bit of specialist time.” : But the PSBGM says the school was overstaffed last year too.Mrs Dawang met with the school council (elected representatives of the school’s teachers) and with Mrs Stern on Monday, and again with school council on Tuesday. The teachers proposed alternative David Mills oversees the fun: WHS extracurriculars offer plenty of choice Westmount High School has a student life and community animator.Since January this year, David Mills, 28, has filled the position.Mr Mills says his job is part of the school's plan to enrich the lives of the students, to provide a good atmosphere for learning and to help the looking for classmates to join them, Oct 7, at the Hillside Armory, for a class reunion.Paul Levine and Meg Pickel are planning to have music, food, drinks, dance and chat at the reunion.Tickets are $20.For information, or to provide mes and addresses of long-lost classmates, contact Ms Pickel at 484-7032 or Mr vine at 485-0670; lot of things were dormant that we're resurrecting,” he says.Students have come to him with suggestions and he has arranged meetings to discuss reinstating the fashion show and the variety show, and maybe a swim team and ski team. The drama club which started up again last year is going to be giving its first production for this school year sometime in October.Mr Mills says he wants to have a lot of cultural outings for the students this year — to museums, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, concerts.A music program is being started with six weeks of what Mr Mills terms “explorations” by all the grade levels. This is simply an introduction to music basics — rhythm, harmony etc.Penny Lewis is, once again, taking the music program in hand.Mr Mills reports an ecumenical outreach program at the school. In a meeting last year with WHS principal Richard Meades, Mr Mills was offered and accepted the full-time position.Mr Mills also is interested in sports.“I wanted to coach football,” he says wistfully. But there was not enough interest this year to get a team into the inter-school touch football league. So Mr Mills is going to start an intra-mural team.“Hopefully it will catch on,” he says. The school’s track and field team will have its first practice this week, and he says the boys’ soccer team had a good turnout for its first practice. He seems excited about the new house system at the school.“Everybody is evenly divided between the houses. All activities and certain academic and volunteer - 29 Staff cuts at Roslyn may end English stream arrangements, Mrs Stern said, including creating a split Grade 1 and 2 in the English stream, and shuffling the Grade 5 French immersion classes to reduce their number by one.Mrs Stern said that on Tuesday Mrs Dawang sent a letter to the Grade 1 English stream parents recommending that’ they enrol their children elsewhere and suggesting game was a tight defensive contest. The Norway halfbacks, including the strong brother-sister combination of Charleton and Morgan Snow, contained the Argentina forwards throughout the opening nalf. When Norway goalie Michael Johnston was tested, however, he proved tobesolid and alert as usual, turning By WARREN VALDMANIS back all shots that came his way.The Argentina defense, led by the exceptional play of Sam Carsley, confined the ball to the neutral zone for much of the first half. With perseverance, however, such Norway forwards as Jonathan “the Cannon” Mutch and Ian Jarvis managed to mount a sustained attack late in the half. Finally, their efforts bore fruit.Intercepting a pass, Justin West charged through a sea of defenders to EORGE ARAGE DOING IT RIGHT FOR 31 YEARS GENERAL
