he sent an officer home over the weekend, but now says he will reinstate the patrol.Sept.15 is the deadline for municipalities to say if they are opting in or out of Bill 102.“The status is the same, it’s not changed.” he said, when asked if his resolve to enact the legislation was affected by the union's actions.“It doesn’t help their cause at all.“If only they had come to me calmly, coolly, and said, ‘For these reasons you should opt out,’ I'd listen,” said Mr.Trent.they EE INDEX Three of the ducks from West- Vol.LXV, No.37 “ “Mak RY Westmot Wn bec, T des Union protestors turned camera shy after a short but noisy demonstration outside Mayor Peter Trent's home Monday night.“They were chanting things like ‘Democracy!’ This was democracy?Even though I'm mayor, this is private property and this is trespassing,” he said.“Just because I'm mayor doesn’t mean they can walk over my lawn.” Director of local police Station 23, Pierre Vézina, said the protestors did not contravene the Criminal Code’s definition of trespassing.Trespassing only occurs at night, according to provin- should have their throats slit.Photo by OWEN EGAN cial law, and night is defined as between 9 p.m.and 6 a.m.“These persons,” said Mr.Vézina of picketers’ targets, “are also public figures and they don’t necessarily want the police to prosecute when such an event takes place.” The public works department was called to clean up the soggy pamphlets left behind by the protestors.Three ducks found slaughtered in park It's pond area, in another pond in the 3 ail of wesymount your home sday, September 9, 1993 Beside the Point.7 Building permits .22 Business Briefs.8 Churches.cocvvnnnn.15 Westmount Classifieds.18 Firecalls.16 Home & Garden supplement.9 Lettersto the editor .6 Mayor'scolumn.7 Police log.14 This Week’s Westmounter .21 ; living near the proposed teen centre should not be brushed aside, Met- calfe resident Terry Ballantyne told a council at Tuesday night’s meet- Ing.Council chambers was filléd with eople who wanted to discuss the Men centre.‘=~ Despite the 103-name petition and the presence of several petitioners, council decided not to pass any resolutions regarding The Met, which is slated to open Sept.23 on the corner of Sherbrooke and Met- calfe.“There is really nothing that council has to do on this matter now,” said Councillor Karin Marks after the meeting.“The time for council to do something was when the grant request came in.” Westmount is following rather than leading the pack on the teen centre issue, with other municipalities having already established centres in residential areas, she said.Scared of Joung and of elderly “Why is a community so scared of its young people and its old people?” asked Roslyn Avenue resident Sylvia Adams. She said similar fears were raised when the Manoir Westmount seniors’ residence was proposed.Although a referendum on the seniors’ residence won only by a small majority, people would argue that it is an incredible asset today, Dog left in empty apartment A Shepherd-Great Dane mix was fed and given water by the owner’s landlord for three days before he called the Public Security Unit and the neighbours involved.Ms.Marks agreed that it was a good idea.“Surely 103 people with a common point of view can’t be all wrong or all bad,” said Ms.Ballan- tyne, referring to the petition deposited at city hall by locals worried about the disturbance a teen centre might create in the area.‘Stereotype exists’ “Generalizations are odious, but you can’t deny the existence of certain stereotypes.Groups are made up of good, bad and everything in between. The stereotype of the raucous out-of-control teenage exists,” she added.Petition organizers Patrick Tee and Jack Goldstein reiterated their concerns about controls the city would institute against loitering and disturbances as well asking if it did any research on the people living in the area.Councillor Herbert Bercovitz urged the petitioners and the teen centre board to start a dialogue so that concerns could be addressed.Teen centre board member Ani- tra Bostock said despite the fact that The Met is not a city project per se, organizers have appreciated the fact that the city has viewed the idea as a healthy, positive move.“Now we're hearing about the complaints against the centre,” she said.“I just hope the city continues its support.” The Westmount Examiner, I A Thursday, September 9, 1993 - 3 The Victoria train station is being studied by the federal government for its heritage value.Feds may bestow special status on CP railway station By ALISON RAMSEY DILAPIDATED it may be, but Westmount’s train station at the foot of Victoria Avenue could soon be in a state of grace.A report being prepared on the station, to be ready by winter, will help judge if it is precious enough to be declared a heritage site.If it is, the owner (now Canadian Pacific) will have to get permission from the government before altering or selling the building.“Things thought of as national historic monuments have no legal protection,” said Robert Hunter of the Department of Canadian Heritage.“These do.” The government has given heritage status to 99 of 185 stations considered so far.Several reports are being done on others; this process began a few years ago when the Heritage Railway Stations Protection Act — a private member’s bill — was passed by parliament. The status does not mean any of the stations receive any money for upkeep, said Mr.Hunter, “it’s just a protection mechanism.” The city of Westmount already lists the CP station at 4848 St.Catherine St.among “very significant buildings” in its own heritage study. The city will not give approval for demolition unless there are “unforeseen, extraordinary curcum- stances,” according to a policy paper drafted in 1989.Whether or not the Westmount station’s heritage status is solidified federally depends on a 10-page report that will discuss the station’s historical, architectural and environmental impact.A scoring system is used. The report’s contents will be evaluated in spring in preparation for a recommendation by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada to the minister for the on Saturday, Dec.4, at 10:30 a.m.at Centaur Theatre (288-3161); and on Sunday, Dec.5, at Stewart Hall in Pointe Claire (630-1220).Liars is the story of Lenny and Jace, teenage classmates brought together by a common problem: an alcoholic parent.Seeking solace from their oppressive home lives, they make a pact to communicate openly and honestly with each other, something they cannot do anywhere else. When faced with their parents once again, however, one of them attempts to confront what the other attempts to avoid. Can either one emerge emotionally intact? This play treats an all-too-common stigma-ridden condition with frankness and honesty. This play will be presented for teachers on Thursday, Sept.16, at 5 p.m.and Sunday, Sept.19, at 2 p.m.Auction for Maimonides Artwork, weekends at spas and hotels, theatre tickets, dinners, jewelry, baby items.furniture, clothing, household items and antiques will be among the items offered for auction at the Auxiliary of Maimonides Hospital Geriatric Centre's Auction "93 on Nov.4 at Shaare Zedek Synagogue, 5305 Rosedale Ave.The evening starts with a wine dnd cheese at 6 p.m.and the auction starts at 7:30.Tickets are $10 and door prizes will be given.tion might have been a childhood bout with polio, or the mumps and encephalitis that caused deafness in one ear.Or his mother’s leukemia. But he can’t say for sure, just that he became fascinated with the field.Ah, the clarinet! Dr.Pless considers he has a wonderful life.“I may not do anything very well.I don’t consider I do anything superbly well, but diversity is what makes life so interesting.” Ann, his wife of 30 years, is a victim of bureaucracy.A physiotherapist, she is not able to practise in Quebec.“So she is the social support system in our neighbourhood, lending a sympathetic ear to everyone, and she uses her abilities in networking. She looks after neighbours, friends and family.” The couple have three children, and Dr.Pless is unabashedly ready to boast about them. One of his sons is working for him for the summer.“Don’t write about me and my musical ability,” he pleads.“Instead, ask my father about his clarinet.” Framed and hung on his office wall along with his medical certificates is Dr.Pless’s Grade 2 clarinet exam certificate. What has been the best day of his life?“It would be easy to say that Geordie’s founder and artistic director, Westmounter Elsa Bolam, directs A Prairie Boy’s Winter and Dome grad Alex Ivanovici directs Liars. Both shows have been designed by Dora Award nominee Jill Thomson, who has designed a number of shows for Geordie. The cast is Andreas Apergis, Ms.Heywood-Jackson, Ross Leslie, Sean Lynch and Heidi Wachtin.Dr.Pless's office in Montreal Children’s Hospital is a pleasant, comfortable jumble of books and whatnot.being awarded the Order of Canada and going to Ottawa to receive it, but that’s not really true, though itis wonderful to have that recognition.“Family events for me are the best. The birth of each of our children; all our recent anniversaries, the pride we take in our long- lasting relationship. But I have to say the day I passed my clarinet exam is right up there.” Does he play often?“We have an annual Wassail where we sing carols and make a trio with piano, sax and clarinet.” Dr.Pless likes to garden.“I struggle a lot with growing from seed, and I am moderately success- Photo by ALISON RAMSEY ful.” He adds, “I read and write a lot and listen to a lot of music, mostly classical or chamber music.I have been deaf in one ear since childhood, and have always had a horror of losing hearing in the other ear.So I want to listen to as much as possible — music is very important tome.” With the amount he does, and the intensity with which he does it, Dr.Pless appears to be remarkably relaxed. He says that appearances are partly deceiving.“I spend a lot of time being angry fighting battles I believe in.But I don’t usually lose my temper.” 449 mes ABQ Joe pen FoR F Les Ent.Claude LES REPARATIONS Archambault Enr.LECT Décapage - SÉHEUX J B A | Finition UPHOLSTERING » =.a INC.André Forget, owner Specialty: Brickwork Fenêtres Escaliers - Boiseries Portes - Armoires Ébénisterie Restauration vitrail 247 ave.Dunbar Ville Mont-Royal FREE ESTIMATES 341-2387 For fast, efficient, retable interior or exterior painting. In home painting since 1956 Cement | Woodwork - 353-2487{soir) i {Message de jour) Roofing 930-3652 (Page!) .Contractor permit.- 3801 Bélair Montreal .259-8776 PAINTING PAINTING INTERIOR/EXTERIOR HELP THEM SPREAD THEIR W/VGS.\\ os for free estimate please cali Plaster repair diywal SUEmEs Mr.Elias 979.5515 FOE —6 DISABL!
