[" Outremont Mount Roya | Fxaminer-Courier Issued with the Co-operation of the Businessmen's Association of the Nerth End.MONTREAL.FRIDAY OCTOBER 6.6, 1933 Park Extension Montreal Annex PRICE — - TWO CENTS MOTION TO WIDEN PARK AVENUE T0 BE PUT BEFORE CITY COUNCIL BY ALD.SEIGLER, LAURIER WARD Motion to Be Put At Next Meeting of City Council Calling for Additional Width of Three to Four Feet—Will Be Seconded By Aldermar Dr.Lesage, of St.John's Ward, is Stated—Outcome Awaïted With Interest.Alderman Max Seigler will, at the next meeting of the City Council, introduce a motion “that Park Avenue be widened on each side by about three or four feet.” The representative of Laurier Ward has made this fact known in a letter to the EXAM- INER-COURRIER.He adds that Alderman Dr.Lesage, of St.John's Ward, has promised to second the motion. This is the upshot of a long period of intensive study on the part of city engineers and North End business men of ways and means whereby the width of the Avenue might be widened, without imposing undue hardship, to the end that it should become a first-class business thoroughfare, which it is felt is its ultimate destiny. The move to widen Park Avenue had its inception at a mass meeting of property-owners and North End citizens, called at the instance of the Business Men’s Association of the North End at the Rialto Hall on Au- rust tenth last.At this meeting a number of plans were submitted. One was that proprietors cede six or eight feet of their frontage to the city; a second that the city be prevailed upon if possible to assume the cost of placing the outside stairs, of which there are a large number, in.the interior of buildings. The ceding of frontage met with a more or less favorable reception, but the removal of the outside stairways proved from the very outset a difficult problem.A committee was however, appointed by President B.M.Garfield, of the Business Men’s Association to study the matter from all angles. This committee consisted of Messrs.L.H, Ouimet, B.M.Garfield, A.Fortier, and E.Lamarche, with A.Campeau as chairman. These gentleman held several consultations with the City Executive and the engineers thereof, at all of which they were accorded the utmost courtesy and consideration. For a time there was every hope that a considerable area would be added to the street surface at a comparatively small cost, hut a scientific analysis by Mr.J.A.Caron, engineer in charge of technical services, together with Messrs.B.M.Garfield and R.L.Greenfield, of the Business Men's Association, brought forth the fact that in order to add nine full feet on each side cf the thoroughfare the roadway would have to be entirely repared. The expenditure involved in this operation would be so great that it sounded what appeared to be the death knell to the entire proposition. The motion of Alderman Seigler, however, lends a different color to the subject, and its result will be awaited with interest.-— | MacVICAR MEMORIAL | CHURCH NOTES A + 1 !
