for occupancy, the Roman Catholic women undergoing sentences in the common jail will be shortly removed there, Owing to the sectarian question which has been raised, and which for some time past has been warmly discussed, the female prisoners removed, as influential persons have objected strongly to their being put in charge of the nuns, fearing that the prison will be made a proselytising ground where the minds of the incarcerated women may be strongly worked upon.The Government have offered to appoint a Protestant official to look after them, and of course the services of a Protestant chaplain are guaranteed, while the ladies who have carried on religious work in the jail heretofore are perfectly willing to continue their ministrations.As the question at issue is still unsettled, it has been decided not to remove them until a definite understanding has been arrived.” The consequence is that the Protestant women will remain in the jail, burdened with all the work that has fallen heretofore to the whole body of female prisoners, and exposed to all the degrading influences designed to be remedied by the establishment of the new pricon.This is far from a pleasing prospect.The horrors of the system have endured long enough, and produced sufficient vice and crime to demonstrate plainly that any change cannot fail of being for the better.To exclade these women from the benefits of an institution designed to reform female prisoners by cutting them off from evil associations, and gradually bringing them to a percep: tion of what is good and right, is a retro.grace movement which we cannot too strongly condemn, While it is perfectly proper for the representatives of Protcst- ant opinion to stand up sturdily for their rights, there is such a thing as sectarianism run mad, and we do not believe that in rejecting the advantages offered by the new prison, those who head the movement inany way echo general Protestant thought, Their action simply amounts to cut ting off the nose to spite the face, and it shows very incongruously in an age of enlightenment and progress.The Government, we have been informed, are prepared to do all that lies in their power to meet the demands of those who have undertaken to speak for tlie Protestant female prisoners, and it appears to us to be the very reverse of sound policy to meet them with peevish objections, It must be remembered also, that the division which is threatened will be attended by a large increase of expenditure and vexatious complications.Besides this, it is probable that every vicious woman who prefers the laxity of the jail to the rigid but kindly treatment of the nuns, will represent herself as a “Protestant,” and thus, instead of about fifteen prisoners as at present, a very large and undesirable increase may have to be encountered.If the parties whose opposition has necessitated the determination to keep female prisoners calling themselves.** Protestants” in a jail where seperation of the sexes is impossible, and exposed to all its degrading and demoralizing influences, will reconsider the gravity of the position they bave assumed, we think they will shudder for the consequences for which they have beegme responsible.CITY NEWS.— FIIÈre wore vighwen applicints ro.protection at the police stations last night.— Mr.D.McDonald hearing him at the private harp recital in Mr.Goulds’ piano rooms, a short time ago, Ap- tommas gave a public entertainment in the Natural History So.iety’s Hall last night before a distinguished auditory.The room was completely filled with people capable "| of appreciating and competent to judge of the performance of this great master of the barp.The programme was a very fairly selected one, but the prelude was, we fancy, rather impatiently listened to, the hope of the audience pointing to Beethoven’s ‘‘ Moonlight Sonata,” the second item, for a novelty was expected.To attack such a composition on the harp, with the intent of giving it all the effect accustomed tobe drawn from the piano, was no light undertaking, and in the adagio, the inferiority of the former was made only too apparent in jarring notes.Bub wit the ailegretto, all differences vanished, and apprehension gave way fo unmixed delight as the artist infused bis soul into the quivering strings, The concluding movement | wags grand effectand drow lerous applause, even from those who felt a little disappointed in having been treated to ; something as different from Beethoven’s enchanting composition as it is possible to imagine.Aptommas has caught the soul i of poetry there is in the Lieder ohne Worte t —those songs without words that Mendelssohn has left as a precious bequest to , the world of music—and his interpretation .of the Spring song was most sweet.With scarcely an intermission, as the applause - ended, he plunged into the * Harmonious not be | Montague and Capulet, he had full scope { for producing all the effects designed in ! the arrangement of Parish Alvars.Here .=i8 playing was simply a revelation, brook- : bg no criticism, and defying description.In his own arrangements.of Irish and Welsh air, he displayed marvellous powers, ‘St.Patrick» Day” was performed in such style as to draw forth thundering applause, and a demand for repetition which could not be denied.With a selection of Welch airs the recital closed, but closed by bringing enthusiam to a climax, for during the play of the ‘‘March of the Men of Harlech” it was plainly evident that very many with difficulty repressed the emotions created by the martial defiant strains plucked from the strings by flying fingers that felt all the impulses of the war chant.The abrupt change to the less familiar air of ¢“ Ap Shenkin,” cooled the excitement, but for several moments it was visibly intense: Loud and hearty applause greeted Aptom- mas on the conclusion of the programme.We trust the grea: harpist will determine «pon giving another public entertainment before leaving Montreal, CHURCH VENTILATION.A St.John, N.B., paper says:—St.John Churches are notoriously ill.ventilated.In most of them no trouble is taken to admit fresh air during the services, or to purify the atmosphere between one service and another.Dr.Hepworth looked around the Congregational Church last Sunday morning, and, seeing no opening anywhere, asked to have the doors opened.“You build your churches here in St.John,” he said, ““as we build boxes in Massachusetts—hermetically sealed.We have breathed this air over two or three times already, and now I want tome of God’s air.If these windows are not made to open you had better knock one of them out.” We hope our clergy will take the hint, and make a point of looking to the ventilation of their churches, They will not have so many sleepy people in the pews if they do, THE PROJECTED MERSEY TUNNEL.The project of tunnelling the Mersey is now gaining considerable impetus.and an announcement has been issued applying for a sum of £20,000 for the heading fund, Some important facts are cited in support of the project, viz.: that about 30,000,009 passengers cross the river Mersey annually, and that the traffic ir grods amounts to 3,000,000 of tons, the transit of which at the present costa from la, 6d.to 24.per ton, Mr.Walter Wood, of London, has the project in hand, and from his successful connection with the Milford Docks (Milford Haven), and other Larbor and engineering schemes, speedy and satisfactory results are, we understand, anticipated.Mr.Wood is part proprietor of a harbor on the South Coast of England, and has recently obtaincd parliamentary permission to expend £100,000 on that undertaking.The £20,000 capital which is to be subscribed for the heading of the Mer- sey Tunnel is to be placed in trust, and is to be laid out solely for this purpose, — English paper, SPECIAL NOTICES.We invite attention to the latest style of young ladies’, boys’, and children’s English School Shoes, sold he had been drinking all day, and after supper he was drunk, He threw the contents of a champagne bottle at his mother’s face, and then threw the bottle at her, He then struck her on the chest with his fist.In the month of March last, when they were all in bed, when witness heard a loud knocking at the «door, and found his father very much in- atoxicated.On one occasion on trying to force his wife’s door open by kicking it he he overbalanced himself and fell down stairs.On another he struck her in the face, leaving her face black and blue in the morning.On another occasion witness had to defend his mother by striking his father, he afterwards weat and asked his pardon for what he had done, ‘* The p'acing gunpowder in the key hole and at the foot of the door.Mr.Ritchie, Q.C., and Mr, Hutchineon; his right hand grasping the carved edge of the angle of the roof ; gradually he worked his hand upwards, and by a tremendous exertion of strength, he drew himself and his companion up a foot at each movement, It was terrible labor—a fearful struggle with death.It seemed to those who gazed upon him a mere impossibility that he could save himself and the girl whem be still clutched round the waist.On he went slowly, the fright flames lighting him in his task, but reducing his strength by the intense heat they threw out.He succeeded in gétting one leg across the angle of the réof, but in doing so he slipped back at least two feet.A shriek of horror burst from the crowd, and rose up in the air like a death wail, The youth did not yet despair, but with desperate exertion he arrested his descent with his knees.He paused but a moment, and renewed his efforts to ascend, using his knees now to enable him to maintain his position on the roof, while he elevated his body 80 a8 te extend his reach until he obtain ed a hold higher than: before, and thus: ultimately gained a: place: of comparative safety.It-was Hal Vivian who was with Flora Wilton in this.frightfoi.situation.He: Lad crawled in seareh of rer int ati ak joining apartment to that which he half entered from the street: She had Harrfëd thither to save something to which she knew her father attacked great importance, but, overpowered by the smoke, she bad, after securing it, fal.en senseless.Hal fortunately: found her as:soon:as he: got:into the room, and the reffoction from.the fi.e Below erabled him just to-see the: window.He tore it open, and saw that: the parapet adjoined the roof of the next house.He was now at the back of the buflding, and comnienced the perilous task of endeavoring to escape a horrible death, and of saving, with his own, a life he esteemed far more valuable.The falling roof of the house he had just quitted, when it sank with its dreadful orash, was within am.ace: of taking him with it.It was a fearful memsent, but he summounted: it, and attempted'to proceed ‘at the instant the’ crowd caught: sight of him.He heard not their cry, eaw nothing, thought not of aught but the endeavor to reach a place of safety.He strained every nerve and sinew to accomplish his object, .buf human endurance, though backed by the wgings and the influence of a strong will, has its limits, He now reached that point when, with sickening dismay, he found his strength failing lim, and although his firmness and determination were unshaken, his- power to go on was leaving him, To slacken his tenacious hold was te be hurled into the yawning gulph of fire behind him.He knew this well ; the knowledge had as yet sustained him, and he clung to the roof still with desperation, resolv- cd, notwithstanding the quivering of his fingers, the agonizing aching of the arm which supported Flora, and the trembling of his knees, to continue to the last his exertions to save the maiden, or to pass out of life with her.Stowly rising up, as before, he made a clutch at the top of the roof, and caught it, but he found that, beyond drawing himself and the form of the senseless girl a little higher, hecoulddo no more.It requited an effort of unusual strength to reach the summit, where he believed he could remain safe until rescued, and that efiort exhausted nature was incapable of making.Nay, he felt that he could but a few minutes longer cling there, and if some Heaven-sent aid did not reach him, his almost superhuman exertions would have been made in vain, He remained motionless, trying to ré.cover his spent breath, and, while in this thronging in the streets reached his earä, and seemed to rsuse kim from his slowly approaching listless ineation.He breathed g prayer ; a thought what Flora might yet bo to him, and what that great world, of which he had yet seen to little, might have in store for him, fiashed through his brain.The effect upon him was like the sound of a trumpet to the soldier at the moment of some fearful charge, in which death is the alternative of glory.He drew himself upwards, struggling with the obstacles which seemed to try and force him backwards, and, almost with a scream, he found himself oscillating upon the spot he had with such trying exertiom sought to reach, exhausted, and wneblo to make another effort.A shadow fell upon him ; he turned his feeble eyes upon the occasion of: i, and saw one of the fire brigade; who, having laid = short ladder against the side of the roof, had mounted it and reached him, Behind this man rose up the helntet of a second fireman, closely following his comrade in his work of mercy.Hal knew at a glance that Flora and himself were saved.He no longer strove to continue the battle with fate, add.did not attempt to resist the embrace of insensibility as he felt the grip of the fireman upon his collar, and heard undis- tinguishable words fall from his lips greeting him, CHAPTER VI.à THB NOBLE GUESTS.Mr, Giahame, though greatly agitated at the sudden appearance and abrupt disappearance of Nathan Gomer, at a moment of such dread importrnce, did not make any comment upon it to Mr, Chewkle.He felt unequal to such task, and perhaps, too, he thought that it would be better not to suppose the stränge little moneyed either observed or suspected any .foul p:ay in the act ho must have seen in commission, So he folded his arms, and remained silent, assuming the aspect of profound meditation.Mr, Chewkle, finding the coast clear of the small enemy, would have given free vent to the feelings which were turbulent and in turmoil within him, but Mr.Grahame repressed the very first outs break, « Pray be silent on the matter,” he observed, hastily, as if aroused suddenly from a fit of abstraction, # our speculations upon the situation are worth nothing, and may lead us astray if suffered to have the rein.Keep what you know safely locked within your own breast, trusting the key in my keeping alone, Your reward shall not certainly be less than your expectations.Mr.Gomer doubtless saw me affixing a signature to a deed, and would presume it to be my own; he could not imagine the truth ; and therefore, though startled at the moment, I do not, upon reflectlion, see any occasion for alarm, Let me see you again in a few days, my good friend, and in the meantime endeavor to suggest a mode of bringing that wretchedly obstinate old man, Wilton, to listen to reason.” Mr, Grabame rang a hand-bell sharply, and Whelks instantly’ was in the room.Mr.Chewkle “had a thing to say,’ which had a strong reference to an immediate pecuniary supply ; but Mr, Graham did not afford bim the opportunity, for he addressed Whelks as he entered, and bade him escort Mr.Chewkle to the door, He tendered a finger to the commission agent as a parting salute, honored him with a stiff bow, and retired promptly to the further «nd of the library.“This way if you please !” exclaimed Whelks to Chewkle, as with head erect and shoulders back, he, with the stateliness of a Tartar soldier at Astley's, marched out of the room, Mr, Chewkle glanced at Mr, Grahame and at Whelks ; he had a pressing occasion for a few pounds; but though he had quite made up his mind to ask for and have if, and indeed in a private self- communion on his way thither that morning, he had composed the conver- gation which was to terminate in a princely act of munificence towards him on the part of the latter personage, he found himself sneaking out, treading tiptoe on the shadow of Whelks, without having uttered a word or having obtained a penny, The princely act of munificence did not come off, but he promised himself that before long it‘ should ; and, ere he was out of the house, he had flung his friendship for Grahame te the winds, and had'earved for himself an antagonistic attitude, in which he played the part of one who, having in his possession a dreadful secret, by which the safety of another is compromised, makes monsy by it frequently.Ag the door closed upon him, Mc.Graham turned a fitful gaze in that direction, and quickly, but silently, turned the key in the lock.Then he paced up'and down the library, almost convulsed by a fiercer, mental struggle.He pressed his burning palm upon his aching forehead; and muttered rapidly: and: wildly—‘ It must be done - How ; there is no escape—no escape—none —rtetreat is utterly impossible, and the advance must be swift, or, in spite of crime, utter crashing ruin must be the result.No; there is no stopping now.That forgery is useless, worthless, while he lives to prove it what it is.But how dispose of him without having any apparent connection with his death! Let me seel TI must have no accomplice.I already Have one too many ; he will be a thorn in my side, I can see that ; but there is time Lim; but this Wilton he'-must:die, and that immediately.Yes, he must die !"he must die! or I perish ! but how to kill him —-how ?how ?” ( To be continmed.) , AFFATRS-IN: BRITAËN, = -( From our own Correspondent, J, Eonvow, Augast’ 23., PÉSRAELI TO HIS COMSTITUENTS.Consequent upoñ the occasion of being elevated to the Upper House, Mr.Benjamin Disraeli has issued his farewell address to the electors of the County of Buckingham in the following terms : — To the HRectors' of the County ef Bucking- am : House of Peers, I return to you the trust which, for so many years, you have-con- fided to me as your member in the House of Commons, an assembly in which I have passed the greater part of my life.It Las been a period of trying qeeasions and memorable events, and I have been permitted to take some part in their management and control, next to the favor of our Sovereign, I am indebted for that opportunity to the fidelity of your feelings, Throughout my public life I have aimed ab two chief results.Not insensible to the prineiple of progress I have endeavored to reconéile ange With that respeot for tradition which is ome of the main elements of our social strength; and in .exterhal-affairs I have endoavored to develop and strengthen our empire, believing that combination of achievement and responsibility elevates the character and condition of a people, It is not without emotion that I terminate a connection endeared to me by many memories and many ties; but I have the consolation of reoollecting that, though I cease to be your member, I shall still have the happiness of living among you, and that, theugh not directly your representative, I may yet, in another House of Parliament, have the privilege of guarding over your interests and your honor.— Your deeply obliged and ever faithful servant, B.DISRAELL Although but one day had elapsed since the foregoing address was issued the Liberal candidate, for the seat thus rendered vacant, was already in the field in the person of Lord Carington.It is apparent, from a large Liberal demonstration eld yesterday in Wycombe Abbey Park, the seat of Lord Caribgton, that the Liberals will leave no stone unturned to secure the return of their nominee, who, by the way, has strong leeal alaims on the - electors.The Conservative candidate, up to the hour of writing, has not yet been brought forward, SOUTH-EASTERN RATLWAY COMPANY, ; This epergetic railway institution, as evinced in its proposed extensions and successful enterprises, is indeed following ont ward.” “Extensive adaitions are about to -Be made to the Charing-cross Hotel, and for this purpose a large block of property to the east of the existing hotel buildings, «nd extending from Villiers street to Buckingham street, has been purchased at an outlay of £50,000.It is the intention of ¥ the Company to extend the Strand frontage of the hotel from Villers street to Buckingham street, which will involve the purchase, among other premises facing the trand, of those at the corners of the streets mentioned, The new line from Greenwich to Woolwich, after surmounting many difficulties, has at last been finished and is now ready for publie traffic.This important link in the South-Fhstern system will be on the main line for North Kent, and will save about two miles in distance, whilst also avoiding the Black.heath tunnel.The new connection excites lively interest in the locality, and there is no doubt but that it will increase the existing, as well as create a new traffic.CURRENT AFFAIRS, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales has consented to lay the foundation stone of the new Glasgow Post Office, in October “next.The elevation of Mr.Benjamin Disraeli to the Peerage has drawn warm marks of approval from newspapers of all political stripes ;
