309-6 How to invest with a certainty to make , and without a possibility of loss, is a very vaiu- able secret just now, when the prospects of trade are so uncertain, That such opportunities exist at present the following facts will prove, for experience of the past is a sure guide for the future: it is easy to remember when the grounds now occupied by à great portion of our city were fields and meadows of trifling vaiue, and which could have boon purchased for probably one cant afoot, Land purchased for thatprice twenty-five years 880, and worth even twenty-five cants a foot today, has increased the price of the original cost every year sinoe, in many instances without the slightest effort or outlay on the part of the owner, whereas, in many places it is worth four times that amount and upwards. That property will contiaue to increase thus s@piUIŸ WIbULE TUDO Lily 1118, 18 BOT QUItY BU Cor” tain, owing to excessive taxation and other well- known causes; but outside the city limits, in healthy and convenient places, propesty muss still more rapidly advance in price, for ihe causes which depress within ihe city, will have a directly opposite effect outside, part calariy westward, in which direction all American cities exieud, aud ours 1s as yet but a village in comparison with other great cities much less favorably situated; streets, 10 miles in iength, are not unusual. The distance between Mount Royal Vale and the oity Post-office is about three miles and a half.Within that short space are situated nearly all our prin- clpal business places, public institutions and private residences, The Windsor Hotel, the Fraser Instituts and other important public institutions, now in course of erection, are a long way oat St.Catherine strest and Sherbrooke street. The most disect roads, will soon bo well-built streets, the entiro distances, and the great thoroughfares of the Weat-eud, Owners of real estate in those directions may rest at ease, for wealth is rolling on towards them, as certainly as the sun advances daily in the same direction. In the Vale, investments will bs mors profitable, for there the land Is sold at a very low prica. The chespest land between shat place and the olty, acquired within the last five years, cost the present owners, in most cases, twenty times dearer than the proprietor of the Vale paid for his, hence the reason why he can afford such bargains. The brick fields are dezidedly the best in Oanads. With cheap land, cheap building material, fres water, perfoct drainage and no taxes worth mentioning, it is easy to soe tho advantages of purchasing there.Another thousand lots are offered, of forly fast by one hundred and twenty, for five huaadred dollars por lot on terms within the reach uf all, viz, one dollar per week; a little further out an equal number of lots will be sold for three hundred dal- ars oach, and smaller payments, if preferred.Comfortable sleigh omnibuses ran as usmal to and from the cliy Post-offlce.Purchasers can moet Mr, T, F.G’8rien at 632 3t.Mary street every day.Parties aubscribing for lots now will have the choice of all unsold next spring, 306z OR SALE.PROPERTY forming corusr of Gollege stroot and Duvré Lane.TwWOS: SIICUTIAGES in Shaw street. Two Privileges,’ or ‘ Puis and Calls,” now one of the favorite methods of legitimate spsoulstion, Their sdvice is vainable, and by following it many Bave made fortubes.— New York Metropolis, 387 Two Toxs POULTRY AND GAME JUST RECEIVED BY THE MONTREAL PACKING COMPANY Call and examine before purchasing elsewhera, BONAVENTURE BUILDING, Victoria Square.WESTERN MARKET, Corner Vinet and Delisle Streets.308* FOR SALE.A Splendid PORTABLE OFFICR, 24 fost x 124 A cb: Buitr Canadian Tweed, well feet; BROTHERHOOD, THEIR ORIGIN AND HISTORY.———— A brief sketch of the International Brotherhood of Engineers that played such an important part in connection with the late strike in the G, T.may not be without interest at the present time.It was first instituted at Detroit, Michigan, on the 17th August, 1863, under the title of the BROTHERHOOD OF THE FOOTBOARD, On the first anniversary of its existence, it was reorganised at Indianapolis, Indiana, when the name was changed to the Grand International Division of the Brotherhood of Locomctive Engineers, The object of the Association was stated to be “to elevate their standing as such, and their characters as men.” A Board of Trustees and Officers were appointed. The latter consists of the Grand Chief Engineer (who is at present Mr.P.M.Arthur), First Grand En- sistant, Second G.A.do, Taird G.A., Grapd Guide and Grand Chaplain, The Chief and Second Officers devote all their time to the affairs of the Society, and receive salaries. The head-quarters of the Brotherbood are at Cleveland, Ohio, where they will remain, by resolution of the Society, up to 1880.Conventions are held annually, however, in the month of October, in whatever cities may be agreed oa by the delegates.A monthly journal, well edited under a committe, is published and circulated among the brethren.Au.nual dues, are payable with an outrance fee of $10.The dues are one doliar per month.Sub-divisions, acting] under charters from the Grand International Division, are established in all the States and Canada. All applications for charters must.be accompanied by a fee of $10.The officers of the sub-division are elected annually, and consist of Chief, First and Second Engineers, First, Second and Third Assistant Engineers, Guide and Chaplain, The Brotherhood is limited to white men, and they must be over 21, able to read and write, good moral character, temperate habits and a locomotive engineer in good standing. Before an applicant is admitted, a committee of three members must investigate bis character, ability, habits and standing, and the division must be assured on all these points before it admits him.The influence or sympathy of the Brotherhood as a body is prohibited from being enlisted or used in favor of any political or religious organization.Any brother who has misconducted himself, or been guilty of drunkenness, keeping a saloon wherein.toxicaling liquors are sold, or being enyaged in the traffic of intoxicating liquirs, he majority, Any brother nealecting his duty, iojuring his employer's property, or endangering the lives of persons wilfully, through drink, is subject to à like penalty. On the death of à brother, the Chief Engineer of the Division is to enquire into the necessities of his family, and render all needed assistance and protection, so long as required. In order to prevent any trouble between enginsers and their employers, it is the duty of the sub-divisions of the Brotherhood to exhaust every means to bring about a settlement. When this cannot be effected, the Grand Chief Engineer is to be notified in detail as soon as possible, The Chief Officer is then to give the matter pro- cedence over all other business, and to visit the locality where the trouble exista, He is there to act as a mediam, and use all honorable and just measures to adjust the differences amicably. The Society is very powerful, having over 90 per cent.of the engineers in the United States, and, probably, 75 per cent.in Canada in connection with it.Its accumulated funds are now very large, and its annual incomes exceeds that of any other trade society on the Continent. In connection with the Brotherhood is a Life Assurance Association, in which there are over 3,000 members, The amount last year paid into the agsurance fund was $164,855, whilst the amount paid out was $158,887, giving $3,000 each to the representatives of 53 engineers who were either killed turquoise hearts pen dant, were worn over the long sleeves at the wrists.Upon one of the dimpled fingers sparkled a solitaire diamond ring, guarded by one set with turquoise.” HOW £20,060 WERE USED UP, There died last week a man whoze name was once rather widely known in Amerios : Sir Henry de Hoghton, the wealthy baronet whose sy mpathies with the Southern Confederacy were strong enough to indace him to * invest” £200,008 in rebel bonds, He was understcod to have held on $0 the last, and, of course, lost every penny of the sum—a million of doMars in gold.A still larger fortune, however, remained to him.He was thrice married, and his last wife turvives, but he dies childless, and the baronetcy devolves on his brother, It is the second oldest baronetage in England, industries of our country, Boston was the pioneer in the business, but it now flourishes at various centres.Baltimore, for instance, is most advantagecusly situated for peaches and pears.Boston leads with her sweet corn and tomatoes.California furnishes by far the most cauned apricots, plums, grapes and psare, and this because these fruits are go abundant and cheap at the San Frencisco market.Strawberries, cherries and raspberries come mainly from the South, where the fruits and labor are cheaper.Blueberries are principally can- ved in Maine and the Provinces, with a few in New Hampshire.À general fruit- packing business is done in New Jersey, sud in Syracuse and Rochester, N Y.Within the last few years large quantities of packed pine apples have been brought from Nassau, N.P., where the fruit flourishes, and where it is now often canned whole, JUST LIKE THE AMERICANS, The Paris correspondent of the London Telegraph writes : “‘ A locil newspaper, named the Journal de Luneville, gives an account of à strange incident which occurred inits locality on Friday last.A gentleman dressed in fashionable style went to a leading establishment of the place and asked for a hot bath. Before undressing, he sent the waiter for a num: ber of articles, of which he gave a list, written on a piece of paper.Among other things he ordered a bottle of white wine, sore whiskey, red pepper, carrots, turnips, tomatoes and onions. After pouring the liquor into the bath he cut the vegetables into small pieces, sprinkled the pepper over them, and then turned on the tap of boiling water. When the bath was filled Le undreseed, and crying out, ¢ Good-bye ; I’m going to cook myself in the American fashion,” plunged in.Suspecting some strange conduct, the attendants burst open the door, and found the man almost boiled to death. An investigation proved that he had suddenly gone mad.” ANOTHER ARCTIC EXPEDITION.The Philadelphia Press says: —A movement is on foot to ask Congress to an- thorize the President to organize aud send out one or more expeditions toward the North Pole, and to establish a temporary colony for purposes of exploration at some oint north of the 81st degree of morth atitude on or near the shore of Lady Franklin Bay ; to detail such officers or other persons of the public service to take part in the same as may be necessary, and to use any public vessel that may be suitable for the purpose; the scientific operations of the expedition to be prosecuted in accordance with the advice of the Nationsl Academy of Science, and to appropriate 850,000, or such part thereof as may be necessary, out of any moneys in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, to be expended under the direction of the President, until the purposes of the appro- riation shall have been completed, or so ong as the expedition shall be engaged in its duties. The partial failure of the recent British Arctic expedition seems not to dampen the ardor of our scientific men, who believe that Yankee enterprise and daring will be productive of more fruitful results, DISCOVERY OF NICKEL.The Williamsport Gezette gives a long account of a valuable mineral discovery on the mill peoperty of D.H, Shale & Co., in Nippenose Valley, one of the most remarkable in Northern Pennsylvania. The nature of the rock in the shaft has been ascertained to be as follows : The first mineral found in the shaft is within eight feet of the surface, and consists of cobalt, tul huret of iron, and nickel.Three feet below this appears to be a vein of fifteen incker, carrying a trace of gold and about three per cent.of cobalt, and from four to seven per cent.of nickel. Then for three feet the mineral is light.Following this is another vein, two feet In thickness, of wickel and silver, with scarcely a tiace of iron, but a strong deposit of arsenite of nickel.Mr, Christopher, a miner and chemist, has succeed.«d in obtaining from the ore pure specimens of nickel. The mine is within eighteen miles of Williameport, and steps are to be taken to erect the necessary worke, Nickel, although much indemand by manufacturers, is.very scarce, there being only ¢ne mine at the present time in the United States, and that is located near the village of Georgetown, in Lancaster County.fast year it is reported to have yielded a profit of $500,000.The other wires are in Norway and Sweden. At ihe present time nickel in a pure state is worth five dollars per pound. It is one of the most beautiful of metals—is magnetic, malleable, ductile and latninable, and is much used in the manufacture of German silver, plating door knobs and many other things, Its beauty consists in its high polish ard freedom from tarnish. The Government ures it largely in the manufacture of money, and the demand for it is constantly increasing among manufacturers, THE POPULATION OF THE WORLD.The London Times published recently an extract of an account of the population of the world, annually prepared by Drs.Behm and Wagner, and published by Perthes, from which it appears that the population in 1876 may be ta :en at 1,423,- 917,00, of whom nearly one-fifth, or 309,- 178,000, reside in Europe, and probably 400,000,000, or fess than one-third, belong to the European civilization, Four-sevenths of the world's people, or 824,000,000, reside in Asia, and half of these are Chinese.; The population of America, natives ia- cluded, in both divisions of the continent, is only 85,000,000, of whom we imagine about balf are of pure-blooded European descent, The population of Africa, arrived at, of course, by more cr less careful guessing, is set down at 199,900,U0U, of whom scarcely one per centuin can ba fairly set down as civilized men, aud little more than ten per centum as semi- civilized. The Turkish Empire is estimated at 46,000,( 00, including 20,000,000 iu Ervot and its dependencies, with Tunis and Tripolis but the population in Enrope is only 8,000,600, and in Asia 13,500,000.Half the European population vf Turkey ak least is Bulgarian, andif we add the Greeks and Slavs, we shall find that the dominant caste does .no§ exceed one-fourth of the whole, to whom the other three-fourths are ta A DIMINISHED YIELL IN POTATOES— TOBACCO ABOUT THE SAME AS LAST YRAR, The report of the Department of i- culture for November aod December wos just been issued. The returns of the corn and cotton crops were published in November, The potato crop falls not only far b.low the extraordinary crop of 1875, bat considerably belowan average crop, Among the causes of diminished yield drought was most widespread, The sweet potato crop «11875 was a fair one, both yield and quality. That of this year nearly eqaats it 'u both respects, The reported entire pro- ductof hay is eight per cent.above that of last year, and the averagequality about five er cent, better.Returns from all sections indicate that the product of beans is about seVen per cent, less than that of last year, The preductof buck wheat last year exoeed.ed that of the previous crop.‘This year it falls about eight per cent.short.Returns shew an increase of about 14 per cent.over year's comparatively large crop of sorg.bum.The tobacco counties’ reporting the comparative product make returns not yuite so favorable in the aggregate as those of last year.A decrease of product is imdi- cated in Massachusetts, Connecticat, New York, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee.Au increase is indicated in Penneylvenis, Ohio, Tadiana, and Illinois.Kentmoky reports about the same as last year. The quality of the entire crop of tobaceo averages about the same as that of last year.Almost the ovly complaint about the apple crop is that its superabundance has greatly diminished ita market value, The Dscem- ber returns indicate that the acreage in winter wheat has been increased about five per cent.over that of the previous year.— Philadelphia paper.SPECIAL Wilton shrunk back, and felt the color | spring into his cheeks, as he behe!d the glittering eye of the little man fixed upon his features, as if to read by their expression what was passing in his heart.; With an effort he assumed a cold de- | meanor, and said— “Tell what is the exact position of the family at the present moment ?” #1 have,’ said Gomer, with a manner as cold as his own.¢I will repeat it.Grahame has fled, it is not known where, although a hot search has been made for him.The sheriff is in possession of his house in London, at my suit. His eldest daughter fled from his house and became a mother before she knew she was a wife ; his second daughter hag eloped with the Duke of Castle-Rose, and isnow his kept mistress, The proud mother—the destruction of ber husband, and, 60 far as she could be, the ruin of her children—Is confined to her bed with a wasting illness and crushed brain ; she is a hopeles idiot. The son is in prison, arrested at the suit of a tailor, who has been discounting his bills, which he has dishonored. That is the condition of the proud Grahames.I ack you are you satisfied; are your feelings of revenge glutted by this wholesale wreck of the family “'There—there was, I think, another daughter,” said Wilton, in a low, hesitat- ingtone, “You did not mention her.” “ Natban shrugged his shoulders, and said, tartly— “You mean the youngest, Evangeline, a simple, artless, innocent girl, with a foolishly affectionate mature. She is pretty and engaging, and has been giving clandestine meetings to a young lawyer's clerk, If he happens to be a scoundrel it isnot difficult to prophecy what will be ber fate.Again I ask you, are you satisfied 7” Old Wilton rose up; he pressed his clenched fist upon his heart, In a hoarse voice, be exclaimed, “Iam shocked, I am horrified, Gomer.I contemplated this situation with a vile satisfactien.I am terrified at its realization. My vengeance, ugh ! God is near! The Rignt will be light to thee, Armor avd might to thee; , Forward ! and never fear!" So Eric resolved togo on in faith, There was just one thing he saw which cheered him, and that was a white hare, sitting with her ears cocked, quite close to the lion’s den, and he wondered how she had no fear, but he could not explain it at the time.On he walked, but he could hardly breathe, as the thread led still nearer and - nearer to the den. These big eyes were glaring on him, and seemed to draw him closer and closer. There the lion stood, on one side of the path, while the great precipice descended on the other, One step more and he was between these two dangers. He moved on until he was so near that he seemed to feel the lion’s breath, and then the brute sprang out on him, and tried to strike him with his huge paw that would have crushed him to the dust.Eric shut his eyes and gave himself up for lost, But the lion saddenly fell back, for he was held fast by a great iron chain, and so Eric passed in safety.Ob, how thankful he was! and how gladly he ran down hill, the lion in his den rosring behind him, Down he ran until all was quiet again. As he pursued his journey in the beautiful green woods, something told him his greatest trial was past.He felt very peaceful and strong, And now, as he reached some noble old beech trees, the thread fell on the grass, and he took this as a sign that he should lie down too, ard sohedid, grateful for the rest, Heate some of his cake, and drank from a clear spring beside him, and feasted on wild strawberries which grew in abundance all round him, He then stretched himself on his back among soft moss, and looked up through the branches of the ‘ gigantic tree, and saw with delight the | sunlight speckling the emerald green leaves and brown bark with touches of silver, and, far up, the deep blue sky with white | clouds reposing on it, like snowy islands | on a blue ocean; and he watched the squirrels, with their bushy tsils, as they ran up the tree, and jumped from branch to branch, and sported among the leaves, until he fell into a sort of pleasant daydream, and felt so happy, he hardly kuew why.As heley here, ho thought he heard, in his balf-waking dream, a little squirrei sing a song. Was it not his owa heart, now so glad because doing what was right, which was singing? This was the song which Eric thought he heard :— 1 “1'm a merry, merry gqnirrel, All dey I ieap and whi], Through wy home lo the old bsech tres ; 1t you chuse me, I will run, In the shzdo and in the sun, EUt 3 OÙ D: Ver, Naver can catch 240! and it is an undoubted fact that, if the birds were all swept off the face of the carth, man could not live upon it ; vegetation would wither and die; insects would become so numerous that no living thing could withstand their attacks, The wholesale destruction occasioned by grasshoppers, which have lately devastated the West, is undoubtedly caused by the thinning out of the birds, suzh as grouse, prairie hens, etc, which feed upon them. The great and inestimable service done tothe farmer, gardener and florist by the birds is only becoming knowa by sad experience, Spare the birds and save your fruit ; thelittle core and fruit taken by them is more than compensated by the quantities of noxious insects they destroy. The long persecuted crow has been found : by actual experiment to do far more good | by the vast quantities of grubs and insects : hedevours than the little harm he does in ; the few grains of corn he pulls up, He is | one of the farmer’s best friends.FAITHFUL UNTO DgaTH.—The follow- | jug story has travelled all over Lurope. This copy is from a Norwegian work, A merchant was on a journey accompanied by his doz.Having transacted his business and received a considerable sum of money, which he carried in a valise behind the saddle, he was now on his way home, Asherode along it appears the valise became detached and fell off the horee. The man never observed this, but .the watchful eyes of his four-footed companion, trotting along behind him, were .Instantly alive to the fact, and the dog de.i termined to do his duty, and he seemed to know what his duty was.It was to cause his dear master to stop, for the poor dog was unable to drag the valise along with him, The dog must have had reason and presence of mind to act ashe did.Running forward, he commenced barking furiously and springing up at the horse, and continued this behavior so long that the merchant became.surprised, and could not conceive what was the matter. He called rose to the surface, and with his other | the dcg had gone mad; he loved is por friend, and it wounll pain him very much to kill him, but he taw no other judicious course ; kill him he must, Long he hesitated, trying to quiet | him with his voice, but after a time, finding all efforts useless, Le draw a pistol, | rointed it at the dog, and turning his eyes awsy from his victim, pulled the trigger.; The gocd dog fell, but he recovered himself at once sufficiently to crawl howling with i agony to bis master, still dear to him, the poor little fellow tried to keep himself ~The merchant could not support the afloat, Now he sank—again he rose— ' sight; he gave his horse a spur and dashed until he suddenly dicappeared.Eric laid ' forward, Lut he soon stopped ; he must, he hold of his thread with a firm hand and ' thought, have one look bohind him to sce if the poor creature whom he had so loved was alive. The dog was not in sight ; but what did he observe?"The valise was gone !
