social media is a double-edged sword. While the 2.0 politician can quickly and easily interact with his fellow citizens on these platforms, his presence on Twitter and Facebook involves certain risks.Political analyst Anais Jalbert has addressed the issue as part of a study on the use of social media in politics in Quebec published in 2014.She said politicians must show sincerity, openness and consistency if they decide to venture into social networks. In Montreal, 75 per cent of the 65 councillors, mayors, members of the National’ assembly and members of parliament evaluated by TC Media failed the test and do not meet all three criteria. To measure this, TC Media scrutinized Twitter and Facebook accounts of elected officials by half a dozen criteria including tone, frequency of publication and interaction with citizens.“Such a rate is not necessarily surprising. This is symptomatic of a generation of politicians who were already there before social networks and who do not necessarily understand their potential” said Jalbert adding that social networking must work in tandem with groundwork. In her work, Jalbert also interviewed several experts in social media.According to them, the best time to publish is just before noon and early evening, with some subtleties — 5 p.m.for - j i Social Media: a failing grad for Montreal's elected officials Twitter and 7 to 8 p.m.for Facebook.Strangely, it is a strategy that even Mayor Denis Coderre does not follow. He sends 30 per cent of his tweets between 8 and 11 p.m, according to data compiled by the CBC as part of a report on Coderre’s social media presence. The fact that Canadiens games take place in the evening is probably no stranger to this statistic.Indeed, the hashtag the Mayor uses the most on Twitter is #HabsDc , 10 times more frequently than #polmtl, the hashtag that refers to municipal politics.“Again this is not surprising,” notes Jalbert.“Coderre already has an established political reputation; he can afford this use of Twitter without having any effect on it.It also allows him to get a new customer who will then be interested in other topics through social networks.” Marc Garneau is Westmount's social media champion ® anne-frederique.hebert-dolbec@tc.tc When it comes to using social media networks like Facebook and Twitter, no other Westmount elected official does it like Marc Garneau. While most Westmount councilors do not tweet much if not at all - Mayor Peter Trent does not even have an account - the liberal member of Parliament posts on his Facebook and Twitter accounts numerous time a day.“Ithink it's an excellent way to communicate with people. Its a great opportunity to be able to 2 hear back from people about what they 10,000 have subscribed to his Facebook page.In comparison, Stéphane Dion, Federal Member of Parliament for Saint- Laurent — Cartierville, has only 3,250 followers.“It surprises me that I've been able to reach as many people,” said Garneau.“For me, it means there is an audience out there that is interested.” The MP writes most of his own tweets, helped on occasion by his communications team. His goal is to share positions taken by the Liberal Party with as much people as possible, among others. On his feed, Garneau posts anything from his party’s agenda and his regular meetings with constituents in his riding of Westmount — Ville-Marie to comments about the weather or the current news.He is also always available to answer public questions and comments. For him, social networks are for dialogue.“When I decided to get involved with social media, someone gave me a really good piece of advice.Don’t just do it one way or after a while people will get tired of you just you, going on and tweeting.Social media is supposed to be a two-way street and therefore I try to comment and answer some of the tweets I receive.” Given the wide traffic on its pages, Gameau remains cautious. He does not hesitate to delete hateful or disrespectful comments.“Once in a while, I will block somebody.I don’t mind if they disagree with me, and it's normal because that’s the way things work in a democracy. But if someone attacks me or somebody else in a very personal fashion, I don’t have time for that” Onesteap ahead No other municipal or provincial elected official in Westmount comes close to Garneau’s social media prowess.Peter Trent, Mayor of Westmount, does not plan to create his own accounts at this point. He considers he can be more efficient, accessible and respond more comprehensively via emails, columns, op-ed pieces and mailings.“Twitter may be a good way to send out ‘bulletins’ rapidly; it is less efficient for commenting on complex matters.I write my own letters to citizens in general mailings. If a citizen emails me, I or my office will usually respond quickly,” he said.Although more and more politicians are using social networks to reach their voters, Trent believes that every elected official has to adapt to its own reality. When asked about Mayor of Montreal Denis Coderre hyperactivity on Twitter, he answered that “the nature of the City of Montreal is very different from that of the City of Westmount.Mayor Coderre has to use the Examiner learned on Monday.Wagner has spent the last 44 years living in Westmount — half of which she’s devoted to causes close to her heart, such as the annual Westmount Artisans’ Festival.“Its not easy dealing with 33 people with artistic minds, but it works.Personally, I do it for the money and food we raise for the Public Security food drive,” said the Claremont Avenue resident Tuesday morning.Trained in the fine arts, Wagner has helped organized the annual event for the last 16 years.More recently, she’s volunteered her time helping the Westmount Public Library in their annual McEntyre writing competition.Wagner will receive the Derek Walker Volunteer Award, which honours a Westmount resident who has over many years given outstanding volunteer service to the community, during the WMA's annual general meeting on May 6 at Victoria Hall. She joins an impressive list of past winners, including current mayor Peter Trent, Westmount Historical her in our midst.” Wagner, well-known for her “Art at Home” initiative which brought artists to her home annually for an art exhibition as recently as 2011, met Kiely in the 80s as both were part of the now-defunct Citizens’ Traffic Advisory Committee (CTAC).Following her first volunteering experience, the Westmounter fought for overnight parking on her street in 1992.After two years of persuading city officials, Wagner succeeded in getting Westmount to allow overnight parking.“I was fighting for myself and everyone else.It was silly how there was no overnight parking,” she said.Thereafter, she got involved with the WHA and was president from 2000-2003.With the community at heart, she was a mainstay on the WMA board over the last decade.“I love experts © vanessa.limoges@tc.tc Ily aun an, les Québécois portaient les libéraux de Philippe Couillard au pouvoir.
