La Source, Monday, April 7, 2014 DUNDEE Fire ravages storage barn A fire tore through a storage barn located on the property of Winston and Jean Armstrong\u2019s farm in Dundee on Friday, March 28.SARAH RENNIE sarah.rennie@quebecormedia.com Having turned in for the night just before midnight, Mr.And Mrs.Armstrong were awakened by someone ringing a doorbell urgently only a short while later around 12:30 am.The fire was ravaging the front of the barn by the time they realized what was happening and called the fire department.Mr Armstrong resourcefully used his tractor and attached snowblower to beat back some of the flames until he ran out of snow and firefighters arrived to take over.His quick thinking may well have helped to save the house from being swallowed as well by flames.The siding on the house was singed and rippled from the heat but otherwise unharmed.The barn and its contents, including a number of vehicles, tractors and an irreplaceable collection of restored garden tractors were all lost.\u201cThe barns were just packed for storage,\u201d says Mrs.Armstrong, who is also the Mayor of Dundee.She notes that there were at least 52 tires on different implements stored in the barn, and that these alone would have made for a large fire.Fire departments from both sides of the border responded to the blaze, including Fort Covington, Westville, Bombay, Hogansburg, Saint-Anicet, Godmanchester and Hinchinbrooke.A fire destroyed a storage barn in Dundee on March 28.Firefighters from seven departments were called to the scene.The fire is being considered criminal in nature.PHOTO JEAN ARMSTRONG According to the Sureté du Québec, the fire was deliberately set.Investigators from the SQ\u2019s regional office combed the scene looking for clues.There was no electricity in the barn and there were no batteries, gasoline or flammable substances stored inside.The location where the fire began is also being taken into consideration.No suspects have been arrested.Peter Finlayson\u2019s March weather It seems ironic that the same time the IPCC is announcing the results of a new report on climate change and global warming with dire consequences that | must announce that March 2014 was one for the record books - alcohol after being stopped by police on Route 132 in Saint- Anicet, near the intersection of 78th Avenue, during the evening of March 29.When officers proceeded to question the individual, they discovered he smelled of alcohol.The man also failed a test conducted on site with an approved screening device.The resident of Sainte-Barbe was brought to the police station in Ormstown where a Breathalyser was administered.The results showed he had a little more than the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.The man was released, but will appear before the loose tobacco seized Police seized sixty bags of illegal loose tobacco from a truck abandoned on a snowmobile trail, not far from McDonald Road in Saint-Anicet, in the early hours of the morning on March 28.The vehicle was stuck in the snow and some bags of tobacco were also found outside the vehicle.The truck, which was at least twelve years old, was seized and an investigation by the Sûreté du Québec is underway.Winter Carnaval 2014: a salute to Olympic Canadian athletes A very crisp and fresh morning greeted the over 300 students from Ormstown, Franklin Elementary and Howick Elementary on February 28.A new snow coated the ice rink as the athletes from these three schools arrived in the OES gym.A short while later a number of teams were formed and the students from all three schools competed and participated in a wide array of well planned events.The slide hill proved very popular, but, not to be outdone the dogsled team, the ice hockey and figure skating activities, the amazing snow maze were also very trendy.Groups punctuated the outdoor activities with some inside reading, hot chocolate, fresh muffins and the ever tasty, maple taffy.With an army of volunteer parents from all three communities, the students were well cared for.By all accounts this was the very best carnival in recent memory and the fact that the three schools joined together made it even more Buskin Ashby.To team is very young but showed a lot of promise.The next meet was on the 21st of February and was also held at Claude Robillard.This was a regional track meet.Sara Bohemen placed fifth in midget girl's long jump.Annabel Nadeau-Germann came in sixth in bantam girl's shot put.An amazing performance was had by all.The season has been filled with personal bests and great performances.It was an amazing experience for the athletes to compete with high level athletes in a world class venue.Rugby is still in tryouts for all genders and levels, there have been no teams made to date.The
