[" y & bod : gleaner-sourcecr Michel Hohuu Danh Nguyen PHARMACISTS 2 locations to better serve you 4 Bridge Street, Ormstown 21 Lambton, Ormstown Open 7 days Open 4 days aner A must have for arff history buff, friend or family member, Shipping available.WOW NFSB Reaction to school board mergers ThrGleaner 12249 CON HEALTHCARE P5 2 new doctors for CSSS of HSL t @ MEDIA Vs December 8, 2014 N°44 |20 pages | $1.30 plus taxes Rousing Success for Rudolph Run 2014 On Saturday, November 29th \u2018Rudolph\u2019s Fun Run/Walk took over Ormstown as participants of all ages, decked out in holiday colours and costumes, wound their way through the streets for the annual event.This year proved to be a happy accident as they celebrated their fifth year, their namesake, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer is celebrating his 50th anniversary.Though this year the weather cooperated and granted them with a beautiful sunny winter day, they haven't always been so lucky in the past.The name of the event is fitting since, much like Rudolph Run participants, Grace Brown stated, \u201cRudolph too, goes out in all kinds of weather guiding the other reindeer.\u201d KATIE MARTIN katie.martin@tc.tc The event was established by Grace Brown and Sylvie Guerin, who were inspired by the Santa Shuffle which takes place in Montreal every year.Their organizing team later grew and a few years into the event, they were joined by Darlene Legros Schmid.They figured, \u201cWhy go to Montreal when we could have our own and help the organizations here in the Valley?\u201d The turnout for the event has been growing steadily every year.One participant remarked: \u201cIt's well organized.Every year they get more and more people.It\u2019s for a good cause and it gets people out and active.\u201d This year 211 participants registered, compared to an initial 45 participants in their launch year.Proceeds have gone to various organizations in the past.This year\u2019s recipients were: The Ormstown Lion's Club, La Bouffe Additionnelle, Howick Elementary and Franklin Elementary.The crowd was awash in the Christmas spirit as people all around were decked out in red and green attire, as encouraged in the promotional material for the event.But many participants and volunteers at the event went well beyond that suggestion as there were plenty of Santas, reindeer and elves.All were manifesting their Christmas spirit both through their costumes and by the smiles that lit up their faces.Sylvie Guerin explains that the Centennial Bridge had their route facing a potential detour with its closure, as the finishing touches are made before it is officially opened once again.However, luck was on their side as she explains: \u201cThe bridge was a big thing: we didn't know if it would be open or not and they didn\u2019t know either.They asked the contractor if hey could open it just for us.\u201d And much to their appreciation, the bridge was opened specially for them so participants got to be among the first to christen the new bridge with activity.One participant recounted: \u201cPersonally, I felt like it was an inauguration.I was really happy to get to use it before it's opened to the public.\u201d Upon the conclusion of the event, everyone was invited back to the Ormstown Rec Centre for refreshments and socializing.As the organizers gathered on the stage for a final word and to present the donations to the recipients, they thanked their sponsors and volunteers who made the event possible.As they called the volunteers to the front of the room to thank them, upwards of 30 people made their way to the front exemplifying the extent of work that goes into making the event a success.Grace Brown stressed that \u2018though she, Darlene and Sylvie are the three organizers, \u201cwe have a team behind us that we're very thankful for and we couldn't do it without them and\u201d gesturing towards the crowd, she continued, \u201cwe certainly couldn't do it without you!\u201d Perhaps an appropriate comparison would be to liken them, as a unit, to Rudolph leading the way, pulling Santa's sleigh, working together with all the other reindeer, the volunteers, helping them ensure the success of the event for the participants.Rudolph\u2019s Fun Run/Walk 2014 in Ormstown raised a total of $2764 representing a significant increase from last year.Pictured here are the organizers of the event along with representatives of the organizations to whom they donated this year\u2019s proceeds: The Ormstown Lion\u2019s Club, La Bouffe Additionnelle, Howick Elementary and Franklin Elementary.Recipients also recieved a box of apples for each organization.PHOTO KATIE MARTIN 2 - overwhelming outpouring of grief over his passing on December 2, 2014, it is an understatement to say that he is remembered for having made a contribution to the game of hockey.The abundance of accolades he achieved in the hockey world\u2019in his lifetime is impressive.That said, as many notable people, both in the hockey world out of it, are quoted remembering him, hockey often falls to the sidelines in their words.This serves as a testament that his contribution transcended hockey.Ken Dryden exemplified this when he wrote in his piece for The Toronto Star: \u201cEvery time he was introduced or described, it was with the same word.It's not something that can be aspired to be achieved.It is what a good life sometimes, but rarely bestows.Jean Béliveau had class.\u201d Class is something that is noticeably lacking in many people of celebrity stature nowadays.Many of Whom could take a lesson or two from Béliveau.Scandals are constantly breaking about celebrities who have stepped out of line in one way or another.That knowledge makes the following statement made by Gazette sports reporter, Dave Stubbs, carry that much more weight: \u201cHe lived every day of his adult life in the public eye without even once putting a foot out of place; he made countless personal appearances, and for more than half a cen- try he answered by hand each of the thousands of pieces of mail that came his way.Every single one.\u201d He embodied the very definition of humility and, as so many others have already reiterated, class.In the same article, Stubbs recalls Béliveau\u2019s philosophical statement two years ago while recovering from his second stroke: \u201cI knocked at the door, but it seems they weren't ready for me.\u201d Well, he knocked again on Tuesday, and this time they were.Those left mourning the loss of the legend, however, were far from ready to see such a shining example of goodness of character go just yet.Though even in his death, his legacy both on for John Fraser and others, was out hunting ducks in a boat on Monday at Fraser's Point.A flock of ducks was about to rise when he caught his gun, drawing it muzzle end towards him, when it OFFER OF LAND AT REAR OF HUNTINGDON HIGH SCHOOL MADE TO SCHOOL BOARD The Huntingdon High School Board of Commissioners met on Thursday, at the school, with all members present except Commissioner Watson and with Commissioner Lyell Graham in the chair.Several matters were discussed and items of correspondence read including the Inspector's Report of his recent visit to the school.The Inspector's report was quite good, offering praise in the matter of the cleanliness of the school and in the general conduct of the staff and the pupils.It pointed out that playground space was very small and something should be done to improve this situation.A request was made for a census of the possibilities of the enrollment over a five-year period.This is needed in connection with the OF READING I've got a lot of reading to catch up on.That's a phrase you don\u2019t hear as often as you used to.In an age of television via satellite dish, cable, and video cassette recorder, which bring around-the-clock entertainment into any \u2018household, reading is becoming a lost art.At CVR High School a computer has been tracking books for the past year and has come up with statistics on what is being read- and, more appropriately, what isn't.Although a few titles, specifically sports and recreation subjects, are classified as \u201chigh use\u201d, circulation in general is depressed- a trend that is not unique to this valley.Thus there is concern that the future generations are going to be \u201creading illiterate\u201d.Perhaps the electronic media really does hold something over printed communications.Why couldn't library shelves be emptied of their bulky volumes and restocked with audio and video cassettes?These could be referenced like books and viewed easily on in-house recorders.CVR\u2019s Media Coordinator, who is in charge of the high school'library and the AV Department ended that thought with this remark: \u201cWhat if the power goes off?\u201d He reassured me that if Hydro were to blow up tomorrow, rendering all tapes and films useless, we could still read books.The library computer is another weapon against reading illiteracy.It points out problem areas, such as \u201cGrade 10 reads less books than any other grade,\u201d enabling teachers to target these with possible remedies.Maybe somewhere down the road, even in our lifetimes, we won't curl up with Education Minister Bolduc announced that the New Frontiers, River and Eastern Townships School Boards will be merged to form one English school board on the south shore, thereby reducing the number of school boards across the province from 9 to 7.That being said, Minister Bolduc has indicated that he is prepared to hear other proposals, but will only communicate through the Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA); a meeting is scheduled for December 18th, 2014.In preparation for the December 18th meeting, several meeting have taken place at the political level amongst the boards concerned, and at New Frontiers.With few details available, the general consensus is that the Minister cannot confirm that student success rates will increase, or that administrative costs will decrease.At their meeting of December 2nd, 2014, the Council of Commissioners of the New Frontiers School Board unanimously adopted the following resolution: Resolution #CC14-12-02-008 Reaction to
