over and over again at the very thought of the outpouring of generosity and support that the Betty Riel Foundation has received over the years, but most especially the increase in support they\u2019ve gained since the establishment of their committee in June of 2014.KATIE MARTIN katie.martin@tc.tc Reflecting on the gravity of the generosity, she says: \u201cI think if you look around you, every family has somebody that has been touched by cancer and 1 think that\u2019s why [support for the foundation] just keeps growing and growing and growing.\u201d She goes on to say \u201cI don't think there's one week that goes by that I don\u2019t have someone knocking on the door to donate in memory of somebody who has passed away.\u201d That way, \u201cthe ones up there [in heaven] are helping the ones down here.\u201d As for those who have successfully completed their treatments, Riel has found that they often return to thank the foundation for the help it provided them.Frequently, when it is financially viable for them, they will donate money to the foundation as a way of saying thank you and contributing to the fund so that it continues to grow.As the number of donations have grown, so too have the ways in which people are donating.She has had people who have hosted birthday parties and anniversary parties and instead of accepting gifts, they will take up a collection of money that guests would have spent on gifts and will donate it to the Betty Riel Foundation.Jean-Paul Quesnel did this at his 65th birthday party and raised a substantial amount, as did David and Jean Rankin at the celebrations for their 50th wedding anniversary.More recently, the girls from the TOPS weight loss program did the same at Christmastime instead of doing their usual gift exchange.\u201cInstead of getting stuff for themselves, Elgin and District Pipes and Drum Donation The Elgin District Pipes and Drum were Santa\u2019s helpers this Christmas season.The band made handmade items that people had donated to be raffled off and sold.The Bank of Montreal also donated a special set of tickets to a Christmas Concert in Montreal to be raffled off.The different ways that people come up with to support the Foundation are extensive.Riel says she has already had people telling her about fundraisers they are planning for 2015 and she is looking forward to their support.The Foundation is also eagerly anticipating their annual hot dog sale at Super C in Ormstown as well as their annual Walk-a-thon.There are also the people who either call or show up at Betty's home, the official address of the Foundation and donate money that way.One such call was from Stéphane Billette, MNA who presented a generous donation to the Foundation after witnessing the important role it plays in the community.He is one among many who have stopped in to donate.Riel recalls when her brother from Massachusetts came to stay with her for a few days recently, he couldn't get over the amount of people calling and stopping by: \u201cHe was floored.He said he had never seen such caring generosity as in this small community,\u201d Betty recalls.It's not even always the amount that leaves Riel at a loss for words, sometimes it's the stories that go along with them.She recalls one donation of $5 that a woman donated after winning it on a lottery ticket that a young boy presented her with in the street.A purely random act of kindness (one you can read more about from the lady's perspective in \u201cLetters from our Readers\u201d section).Riel says \u201cI still get goosebumps of Fame.She states how the opportunity impacted her decision to pursue acting as a career: \u201cIt was monumental.I didn't know that acting was a career option until I started at CVR.I was always acting as a kid and loved my world of make-believe but it was that program that kick-started it all for me .It set my path in a huge way.\u201d The screening of the movie, The Scarehouse, at Grove Hall is the last chance people will have to take in the show on the big screen.Sarah and Gavin will be there along with some of the other crew members from the film.The movie is a horror/thriller and its plot centers around two friends who open a Halloween funhouse the night before Halloween for their former sorority sis- Mes oy CR rths and Je eaths ters.Unbeknownst to the sorority sisters who show up one by one, revenge is the core motivation of the party.Sarah describes the movie as being \u201cfull of dark humour and interesting plot twists.\u201d When asked what were the influences for the movie Sarah responded \u201cThe film has elements of Scream, Saw, Mean Girls and a bunch of others all bundled up into an idea I haven't quite seen before.\u201d The Scarehouse premiered at five sold-out theaters and the response to it has been favourable.Most notably, it was screened at the New York City Horror Film Festival where it took home the prize for Best Feature.It also ranked in the top 10 Best of 2014 lists by two of the limited amount of critics who caught the premiere.The project came together in what Sarah describes as \u201ca whirlwind,\u201d adding that \u201cthe script was existante afin de permettre aux médecins spécialistes qui y pratiquent de réaliser des chirurgies de la cataracte en simultanée.« D'ici la fin de la présente année, l'équipe du CSSS du Suroît souhaite doubler le nombre d'opérations actuellement réalisées par jour, soit une trentaine.Afin d'y arriver, de l'équipement a été acquis pour une somme de 770 000 $ », confirme Geneviève Boileau, porte-parole de l'établissement de santé.Elle indique aussi que les cliniques externes d'ophtalmologie, autrefois situées dans les locaux de la clinique Médi-Val ont été déménagées récemment dans le plus d'autonomie De passage à Salaberry-de- Valleyfield dans le cadre de sa tournée du Québec, la présidente de l\u2019Union des municipalités du Québec, Suzanne Roy, a livré un vibrant plaidoyer en de Beauharnois, Mme Roy a soulevé l'urgence de transformer les municipalités en réels gouvernements de proximité disposant de l'autonomie nécessaire pour accentuer leur développement.«Les municipalités sont prises continuellement à demander des comptes aux divers ministères pour faire approuver leurs décisions et cela freine considérablement leurs efforts de développement», dit-elle.Le regroupement municipal fait aussi valoir la nécessité de pouvoir disposer de nouvelles sources de revenus en marge _ d'une nouvelle entente fiscale avec le gouvernement du Québec.«Environ 75 % des revenus des municipalités proviennent de l'impôt foncier payé par les citoyens et entreprises, il faut équilibrer davantage nos sources de revenus», dit- elle.Une telle réforme autoriserait ainsi les municipalités à percevoir des taxes que perçoit actuellement le gouvernement lors de divers projets et événements.Rapport «simpliste» La présidente de l'UMQ s\u2019est par ailleurs montrée cinglante à
