at the Sheraton Centre in Montreal.This is the first time that the World's will be held in Canada.Prior to now, the competition had always alternated being held in Europe, Asia and the United States.Heritage gym teacher, Harry Antoine, has been going to assist at the World Championships for nearly a decade.He recalls being at the competition nine years ago and he says, \u201cright away | proud of yourself\u201d.Pride is one thing that these students exude while explaining that they have seen their times cut in half since they first got hooked on sport stacking.For almost every single of Rang Notre-Dame and Père-Payant Street in Saint- Chrysostome.According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) of the Haut-Saint-Laurent one of the drivers did not yield to the other after both were at a mandatory stop.Three people were injured, but only one, a 78 year old woman from Saint-Chrysostome was transported to the Anna-Laberge hospital in Châteauguay to be treated for minor injuries explains Sergeant Stéphane Lamontagne.A 29 year old woman from Huntingdon suffers minor injuries On March 27 around 11:10 pm a 29 year old woman who lives in Huntingdon suffered minor injuries following a two vehicle accident at the intersection of the Cowan Road and Route 203.She was in the passenger's seat of one of the two cars involved in the frontal collision.According to Sergeant Lamontagne of the SQ both drivers made their obligatory stops but one of the vehicles got into the other lane when proceeding.The woman was taken to the Valleyfield hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.The two other people involved in the accident refused to go to hospital.Young driver injured in an accident in Saint-Anicet An 18 year old reckless driver from Elgin is responsible for a crash that involved a single vehicle on Sunday March 29 at 5 :45 am.While traveling westbound on the Montée Cazaville, the young man lost control of his car.The pavement was dry and clear at the time of the accident.The young man was taken to the hospital in Valleyfield to be treated for minor injuries.The car he was driving has damages that are estimated to cost more than $2000.Theft in Saint-Anicet A residence on Route 132 in Saint-Anicet was the target of a break and entering which resulted in a theft on Saturday March 28.One or more suspects smashed the front door to the house and entered.They stole some jewelry and money.The owners have not yet listed all of the missing items but the damage to the door amounts to $300.There were no injuries reported and no one has been arrested in this case says Sergeant Lamontagne.Mineur arrested in Saint-Anicet A 17 year old from Saint-Anicet was arrested by officers from the SQ of the Haut-Saint- Laurent on Monday March 30 around 1:15am.We received an anonymous call in the night to inform us that a minor was in a licensed establishment on Montée Cazaville in Saint- Anicet.When officers arrived on the scene they saw the young man go out the side door and flee on foot when he saw the police says Sergeant Lamontagne.The seventeen year old was caught and arrested after 16 grams of cannabis were found on him.He was detained and don\u2019t really accumulate a wealth of knowledge about anything that is not thrust to our attention unless someone close to us has an encounter with it.This point became apparent in conducting my interviews for the firefighters curling championships in speaking with Tom Cappelli.As he was describing when he and his wife found out that their son was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, how they came to terms with it.While explaining this, he showed me a letter written by Emily Perl Kingsley for parents raising a child with a disability entitled \u201cWelcome to Holland\".The letter conjures up an analogy that aligns having a baby with planning a vacation trip to Italy.You begin to familiarize yourself with the attractions, maybe try and learn some Italian and do the necessary research to be an informed traveller.But then when the flight is over and you have landed the stewardess announces that you have now arrived in Holland.It throws you for a loop\u2014you didn't plan for Holland, you planned for Italy.italy is aligned with giving birth to a healthy child, while Holland is to one with a disability.Kingsley writes about the reaction to the =, i £m | KATIE MARTIN > katie.martin@tc.tc A a abrupt change in the course of plans: \u201cEveryone you know is busy coming and going from Italy \u2026 and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there.And for who he is and how he can enrich your life\u201d The heart of the letter confronts the inner struggle between optimist and pessimist that we all encounter when faced with adversity.Ultimately on Wednesday evening was a complete success in every way.The attendance was good and the parade of fashions disclosed styles that many people thought could not be procured in Huntingdon.The show was staged by Kiddy Town, Mercedes Dress Shoppe and Elite Dress Shoppe.They were assisted by Weber's Jewellery Store, Martons\u2019s Shoe Shop, Salon Luce and Marchand Freres.Mrs.S.Liversidge was the commentator for the evening and Mrs.F.G.McCrimmon played the musical selections throughout the evening.Mr.and Mrs.Booth of Booth's Florist donated the flowers on the piano, bouquets for the bride and flower girl and corsage for the commentator.The stage setting was splendid and added much to displaying of the various articles of clothing in the show and added color to the whole arrangement.The lighting effects also did their part in allowing full colors to predominate.This setting was the work of employees of Marchand Freres and did them great credit.The various models, both the very young and the older ones carried out their part of the program with charm and dignity and received much applause.It was a revelation to the audience that such apparel could be obtained in the stores in learning: \u201cNew breed of Anglophone\u201dis becoming comfortable in bilingual milieu Some fifty people participated in an interesting evening of discussion on the learning of a second language which took place on March 27th at CVR.Panelists for the discussion were David D'Aoust, Director General of the Protestant Regional School Board of the Chateauguay Valley (PRSBCV); Yvon Faille, a local pioneer of immersion programs in the valley; and a professor and a researcher from McGill University \u2014 Dr.Jacques Rebuffot, from the Department of Second Languages; and Dr.Naomi Holobow, from the Department of Psychology.Dr.Holobrow recently participated in a research project commissioned by the PRSBCV to evaluate the effectiveness of various French second language teaching and immersion program, including those currently offered in the Chateauguay Valley.The moderator for the discussion was Maurice King, who is the President of CVESPA and former Chairman of the Chambly County School Board on the South Shore where the first immersion program was introduced in the early 1960s.Dr.Rebuffot, whose work involves the training of teachers for second-lan- guage programs, shared his vision of a \u201cnew breed of Anglophon\u201d who is becoming more comfortable in a bilingual milieu and participating fully in the new Quebec society.Dr.Rebuffot emphasized the need for the classroom teaching of a second language to be integrated with community life if it is to be effective.Dr.Holobow voiced the desire of many parents today for their children to have the skills of a second language and empathy for French culture without losing their Anglophone heritage and culture.In reviewing her research, Dr.Holobrow noted that early or late immersion were the most effective methods for helping children to acquire a second language within the English school system, and she noted that research indicates no significant loss of skills in the English language as a result of French 28, the 56th annual Canadian Firefighters Curling Championships officially came to a close.The fruits of two years worth of labour from the host committee, made up of volunteers and curling enthusiasts from the area, paid off to make the event a success.The event began on March 19th as firefigh- ter-curlers flew in from across the country to participate and the Hotel Plaza in Valleyfield became their home for the next ten days.With so much activity crammed into such a short period of time though, it had people feeling like it lasted longer than that.As he spoke at the closing ceremonies, the president of the Canadian Firefighters Curling Association, Alan Sutherland, joked about that as he addressed the participants saying \u201cI think everybody will take home great memories from the past six months that we've been here\u201d Games between the various teams competed against each other throughout the course of the competition at the Valleyfield Curling Club as well as the Huntingdon Curling Club where audiences assembled to watch.As the husbands took to the ice to battle it out against each other, their wives were treated to multiple outings to Old Montreal among others.Various fundraising events for muscular dystrophy also took place such as half and half raffles, an auction, and a player from one of the teams even decided to shave off his shoulder length hair for the cause.Meals were put on at night with signature dishes from each province and then socializing ensued with entertainment provided by local musicians.Back at a press conference at the beginning of March, 2015 host convenor, Fred Hutchings predicted a strong performance from the teams from the West.The final results proved him right \u20ac aor-ous 1 cpa : - Riviere - bronze.Hutchings does point out that though they did not medal, the Quebec team did well and that a lot of the games they had iost were very close games.Beyond the curling and camaraderie, the event showcased the generosity of both the firefighters and the event attendees as they all came together to fundraise an impressive total of upwards of $100 000 to donate to Muscular Dystrophy Canada.Firefighters across the country are proud partners of Muscular Dystrophy Canada and Bruce Porter explains that they have developed programs where departments pair up with people in their areas who have muscular dystro- phy so that they can fundraise and help put a face on an orphan disease.Tom Cappelli, owner of the McDonald's restaurants in Valleyfield, Chateauguay and Mercier sponsored the event when it was held at the Valleyfield Club in 2004 and again this year.it is a cause especially dear to him since his son, Aidan, is battling muscular dystrophy.Porter points out many of the research strides that have been made regarding the disease thanks to the funds raised by the firefighters and Cappelli stresses the gratitude that the people and the parents of people with muscular dystrophy feel as a result: \u201cThis is a really exciting time.There is hope for the parents, we just have to keep abreast of [the research] and it\u2019s thanks to the efforts of these guys and all drummed into us by councils and our Director General is water in the basement, and therefore mould on the walls\u2014like \u201cmushrooms,\u201d we were told.These \u201cmushrooms\u201d turned out to be the crystalline efflorescence from the damp mortar on the stone walls.Said walls, approximately 2 1: feet thick, showed no signs of succumbing to either fungi or shifting any time soon.Because of the three previous days\u2019 heavy rains, the group did find water on the basement floor.\u201cWhere's the sump pump?\u201d one asked.No sump pump.($100 at Canadian Tire last week.) \u201cWhy not?\u201d Well, they were told, there\u2019s no hole.It gets better.The group spied an open pipe sticking through a wall, from which water dripped.Turns out that all the rain from the roof was directed down outside that pipe and water was coming in to where there is no longer a cistern.To be fair, the building has plenty of other things to be fixed that are more challenging and possibly not such great material for a Monty Python skit.A list of these as perceived by the André Pilon company can be found in a short report online at the town\u2019s website.But there are problems with trusting in this lone assessment, not least of which is the wisdom of relying on a company which did not notice where the eaves-troughs empty.A significant portion of the repairs noted involve the not-so-attached garage, which it is doubtful anyone considers worth saving.And the estimated cost of $900,000-plus in this report is not for repairs at all but for demolition of the present hall and construction of a new one\u2014which also means this survey of the repairs needed is compromised.We have no estimate from anyone for repairs.We need an independent appraisal of the state of our town hall.It is one of only two historical buildings collectively owned by the people (the other being the old theatre, now the town garage) and should not just be thrown away.Despite two signings over the \"years against borrowing for new town hall projects, with the last one\u2019s being conducted under numerous irregularities that prejudiced for the project, we are being presented with another incarnation of the last multiplex plan, with costs already escalating beyond the million or so dollars purportedly socked away by Council so that they can act unilaterally and build without our approval.Here's a thought.Councils come and go.The one continuous thread tying together policy through the years is Management.Do we really want to entrust a million-dollar-plus project to Management that couldn't see to getting a downspout diverted so that rain from the roof wouldn't collect in the cellar?Let us demand Council halt the plan to build a town hall complex next to the fire station, leur hôtel de ville est «un cas désespéré» ne valant pas la peine d'être réparé.Une vérification de cette évidence s\u2019impose, aucune évaluation indépendante n\u2019ayant été faite sur l'état de l'édifice et le coût des réparations.L'an dernier, un groupe de citoyens préoccupés ont fait le tour a I'intérieur, dirigé par le maire, suivi d'observations intéressantes.Un des problèmes insurmontables, souligné maintes fois par le conseils et le directeur général est le fait que l'eau s'accumule dans la cave, développant ainsi de la moisissure sur les murs\u2014des «champignons», dit-on.Ces «champignons» s'avèrent être des efflorescences cristallines du mortier des murs de pierre, Les dits murs, de deux pieds et demi d'épaisseur, ne montraient aucun signe d'endommagement par les champignons ou de bouger sous peu.Parce qu'il avait plu depuis trois jours, le groupe a constaté la présence d'eau au sol.«Où se situe la pompe submersible?se demande-t- on.Pas de pompe (100 $ au québécoise a présenté ses 71 recommandations récemment à l\u2019Assemblée nationale, pour rétablir l'économie provinciale.Le président de la commission, le fiscaliste Luc Godbout, propose une baisse de 4,4 milliards de dollars de l'impôt sur le revenu des particuliers, mais une hausse des tarifs et des taxes.La Commission suggère donc de faire passer à 11% le taux de la TVQ (un bond d'un peu plus
