[" MONDAY, APRIL 27, 2015 | N° 15 | $1.52 plus taxes The TALENTED YOUTH TAKE TO THE STAGE FOR TALENTFEST 2015 KATIE MARTIN katie.martin@tc.tc PERFORMANCE.CVR students had a blast showcasing their talents while discovering the style and lingo of the 80's and 90's to present this year's Talentfest under the umbrella theme of \u201cKickin\u2019 it Old School\u201d.The Talentfest coordinators, teachers Jessica Barrette, Melanie Beaudin, Sia Georgaklis and Lynn Harkness all stress that though they are there to offer the students guidance throughout the process, the show is really all about handing the ownership over to the students and letting them shape the show.Lynn Harkness states of that aim: \u201cTalentfest is the kids\u2019 show, it's really where they get to shine in their own way and flavour [the show] the way they want to! Elizabeth Séguin, a grade 10 student who composed the choreogra- phies says of working with her peers to teachthem the dances:\u201cIthinkeveryone cooperates once they know this is our show\u201d Inherent in Talentfest is the opportunity forthe @ MEDIA t \u2018Gleaner personal growth of the participants.Jessica Barrette sums this up by explaining: \u201cYou see them come in with their talent in grade 7 and then each year they build on it and their talent definitely gets more refined as they grow as performers: Elizabeth Séguin and Callan Forrester, who was an MC, have each been in Talentfest for four years and look back with a sense of pride at how much they have evolved since they first started participating.Having grown up being accustomed to listening to their music on small electronic devices like iPods and MP3 players, the opening sequence featured a comic routine of a mash-up of music from the era which was driven by students discovering a boombox on stage and being confounded at how to work it.It was a scene that appropriately set the tone for the rest of the evening which played with their awareness that they were oblivious to some of the trends of the day being that the oldest among them were only born at the tail-end of the decade.Drama teacher, Donna Babin, recalls when the and feeding that fire.\u201d A These teachers have a knack for igniting the flame within the students students first found out the theme and raided her office to put their costumes together.The enthusiasm with which they embraced the theme really impressed her as did their curiosity about the era which was not all that long ago.As they put on flashy fluorescent attire and began to think about the characterization required, they asked her: \u201cHow did you guys act back guys.\u2019 The MC's for the night Callan Forrester, Jeremy Béland, and Michael Bryntwick admit that the theme posed a challenge for them in terms of coming up with material for their skits between the acts.Although, in some cases the material came to them organically such as the instance where Michael's genuine obliviousness as to who the Spice Girls were served as inspiration for one of their making people laugh and right from the beginning of the show it was clear that they fed off of the energy of the crowd and as such their skits built momentum as the show progressed.The entire cast, tech crew and coordinators put tireless effort into honing and perfecting the performances in the prior months of preparation, which more than paid off come performance night.The show boasted a jam-packed array of diverse performances which made one thing abundantly clear to the audience members: there is an impressive youth talent poolin the Valley and CVR helps to cultivate that in their students.Principal, Brigitte Barrette says: \u201cthese teachers have a knack for igniting the flame within the students and feeding that fire\u201d By the end of the last show, both students and 20, a new store \u201cLa Vallée des Travailleurs\u201d opened up shop at 106 Chateauguay Street in Huntingdon.Owner Joanne Myre picked the name of her new store carefully as she wanted it to be inclusive of all workers.She says her goal is to have \u201csomething for all of the workers\u201d from farmers to landscapers to many other manual laborers.She hopes the store has a little bit of everything.Everything ranges all the way from tractor tires to work clothes and countless things in between.Not only that, but with the shelves fully stocked, she also explains that she still has plans for bringing in more stock and is looking forward to hearing feedback from the clientele about what they want to see on the shelves.Myre's husband, Steven Myatt, says \"my wife has dreamed about this since she was a lab _ technician at Cleyn & Mes good not only for the town, but for the whole Valley.They don\u2019t have to go all the way to » Valleyfield or St-Martine, they can come right Fest 2015.Choirs from each of the elementary schools in the board took the stage to showcase their diverse array of musical talents.The vast scope HOME SE rg od i of the music covered throughout the show spanned centuries and as well as cultures.Mary Aboud from Hemmingford Elementary said that she and the other music teachers let their song choice be dictated by what best suited their teaching style.Fellow music teacher, Crystal McCormick, from Howick Elementary was quick to agree with her.Each school performed two numbers which highlighted not only their vocal abilities, but their dance Gleaner OPINION KATIE MARTIN katie.martin@tc.tc Growth Mindset Author of the harry Potter series, J.K Rowling, is quoted as having said: \u201cI would like to be remembered as someone who did the best she could with the talent she had\u201d | think this sums up the root of what Talentfest is all about.It is inspiring to see the youth pushing their personal limits and using the event as an opportunity for growth.It isn't about them comparing themselves to each other and battling it out to see who is better than the other.it is about respecting that each individual participating is giving it their all.It is also a process of evolution where every time they push themselves, they improve and in so doing, can set the bar of their ultimate goals even higher for the future.It is not about an all or nothing kind of mentality, but instead one of continual progression.This brings to mind the psychological research done by Carol Dweck on the growth mindset and the fixed mindset.It is briefly summed up in a TED Talk that she gave entitled: \u201cThe power of believing that you can improve\u201d.People with a growth mindset embrace challenge as an opportunity to grow, whereas people with a fixed mindset evaluate based on the outcome and so if they fail they develop a defeatist attitude.Rather than taking a step back and looking at what they learned from the experience, they instead look at it as a reflection of their intellect.Dweck also stresses that a growth mindset is something that can be developed over time so if you have a fixed mindset you can take active steps to changing it.Through interviewing the staff and students regarding Talentfest it became clear that the reason there is such personal evolution through the performers participation in the event is spring fitting up.60 Years Ago April 27, 1955 A History of St.Lawrence River; H.M.Finlayson gives some facts to Rotarians Mr.H.M.Finlayson, Manager of the Hydraulic Resources Department of the Shawinigan Water and Power Company, addressed the Huntingdon Rotary Club, on Monday.Mr.Finlayson stated that his ancestors of many years ago lived in the Beech Ridge area, and that he and his wife had on many occasions visited many parts of parts of Huntingdon County in search of what might become an acceptable place for their home.His address dealt with the developments that have taken place in the St.Lawrence River.Huntingdon was at one time, possibly 20 000 years ago, covered with 300 feet of water.Up to 100 years ago ships calling for deep water to navigate could only come up the St.Lawrence River as far as Three Rivers.À 16-foot deep channel was dredged to Montreal subsequently to a depth of 35 feet and at a cost of $100 000.In the distance of 115 miles west of Montreal a drop is made of 225 feet and it is in this area so much is now taking place in regard to the St.Lawrence Deep Waterways.Back in 1680 De Casson was the great man of the day for he was in reality a defender, a historian, an engineer and many other thing that might call for leadership and foresight.It was he who started the first canalization of the St.Lawrence, when he had work started on the little St.Pierre River in Montreal.Work was done on what was to become the Lachine Canal but when they ran into rock formation the money ran out.Canals were built at Lachine, Beauharnois and Cornwall thereby making it possible to navigate the St.Lawrence.As the St.Lawrence near Cornwall was so exposed to the United States, wars and threats of wars were coming to light frequently; consequently, the development of the Ottawa River and system of waterways known as the Rideau Canal.With this, the Ottawa River and Rideau Lakes canal system, it was possible to go from Lachine to Kingston, Ontario by water without being exposed to the possible enemy, the United States.The canals between Prescott and Montreal provide for shipping that calls for a 14-foot draught of water.The canals west of Prescott trouble and \u201cneeds a massive injection of creative energy, trained talent, cooperative effort and marketing expertise.\u201d These are all traits that have surfaced in St.Anicet over the past two years.The Chamber of Commerce is now ready to promote the region in a big way and has received support from the municipal council and the area\u2019 citizens and businesses.Diane Ford is a driving force behind the promotion efforts and has served as the Chambers President since its inception.A group of 25 showed up at the first meeting called in the summer of 1983 entitled \u201cPromotion St.Anicet.\u201d Each showed enthusiasm for the idea and became members at $100 each.With that budget the promotion began immediately with $1 800 worth of newspaper ads to draw Montrealers to the region.The ads were spread out through the summer at St.Jean Baptiste Day, Canada Day, the St.Anicet Festival, and Labor Day.In February of the following year, Michel Bergeron of the Chamber of Commerce of Quebec spoke to interested citizens on how to put a local Chamber in motion.By May 5 the charter had been received and 67 members paid dues- $20 for individuals and professionals, $50 for small businesses, and $100 for businesses with two or more employees.A color brochure was then published in June and sent to all tourist bureaus within 100 miles and to yacht clubs everywhere hoping to attract visitors to the waters and shores of St.Francis Lake.Brochures were also distributed at the annual summer festival sponsored by the Optimist Club \u201cOur objective has been to put Homecoming for artist Dwight Baird at Grove Hall SARAH RENNIE ART.Renowned artist and Huntingdon native Dwight Baird is coming home for a weekend exhibit and sale at Grove Hall aimed at finding homes for his earlier work inspired by the very place that it all began - the Valley.The \u2018Home Again\u2019 art exhibit and sale will take place from May 1 to 3 in Huntingdon.Born and raised in Huntingdon, and now living in Montreal, Baird has been rummaging through his drawers, closets and shelves in preparation for the exhibit.\u201cIts like my whole life is flashing before my eyes,\u201d he says, of his decision to bring some of his older work as well as a retrospective of his 37-year career as a waterco- lour-turned-acrylic-painter to Grove Hall.\u201cI guess it is going to be a homecoming,\u201d he suggests.A LONG CAREER Baird was 17-years old when he first left the Valley to study the visual and creative arts at St.Lawrence College in Cornwall, Ontario.He recal- Is how he had planned on enrolling as a graphic arts student in his second year when a teacher who suggested he was a talented painter intercepted him and encouraged him to consider remaining in the fine arts.\u201cMy whole future changed in a split second,\u201d he says; noting he has kept painting since, save for a stint as a graphic artist upon graduation before he left to paint his way through two years of travel across Europe.The resulting work formed his first two collections of works, \u2018A Touch of Europe; and \u2018There and Back Again\u2019 These were followed by four other watercolour series revolving around the theme of Newfoundland, amusement parks and the\u201ccarny\u201d lifestyle (featuring several scenes inspired by the Ormstown Fair), baseball and the night.Since then, he has been working in acrylics with a new style of contemporary realism \u2014 mixing the broad stroke style of impressionism with specific detailed areas in his work.This transition resulted in an extensive series depicting the people and daily life in Cuba.REPATRIATING HIS WORK The exhibit at Grove Hall will feature some of his earliest work from 1977 \u201cright up to the painting | am hoping to finish today,\u201d he laughs, during an interview last week.\u201cThere has been Cunningham's changes to Stonemill Pub KATIE MARTIN katie.martin@tc.tc BUSINESS.The Chateauguay Valley will have a local Pub to call their own: As of May 1st, 2015, the pub formerly known as Cunningham\u2019s Pub will become Stonemill Pub.Local, Linda Guitard, will become part owner and manager of the new pub and Tammy Barrington will head the kitchen.With the implication of change, some things will remain constant at the establishment.For example, the current staff of Cunningham's Pub will become part of the Stonemill Pub family.The name \u201cStonemill Pub\u201d was made with the local heritage at the forefront - of the decision-making process.It is named after the local grist mill, which is visible from the pub's riverside deck, and has become an iconic symbol of the town throughout its history.a lot of changes over the years,\u201d he notes, of the nearly four decades of paintings he has to choose from.\u201cI am trying to repatriate all of the older pieces back to the Valley,\u201d he says.\u201c am trying to make the Valley work more accessible,\u201d he adds, noting there will be around 35 original paintings on display as well as a boutique type area that will feature reproductions and \u201call types of stuff.\u2019 \u201cSome of it will bring a lot of enjoyment to people,\u201d he says, while admitting he is very much looking forward to the opportunity to show his work to some of his most appreciative fans back home.Baird's last exhibit in the Valley was eight years ago in partnership with the Haut Saint- Laurent MRC at the Alfred Langevin Cultural Hall.This new show will not be the first to be held at Grove Hall, as his work was displayed years ago when the building housed the Renaissance Project, which coincidentally was also run in part by Mark Bye.\u201cIt has been over / Pin two years that | have been working on getting this exhibit,\u201d says Bye, now the Artistic Director with the Rural Arts Project and co-owner of Grove Hall.It may have taken some time to organize, but for Baird the chance to support Grove Hall with an exhibit was an easy decision.\u201cIt's a boost to the town,\u201d he says of the performing arts centre.\u201cThis is my way of participating \u2014 and it will be fun\u201d The exhibit will open with a vernissage on Thursday, April 30, from 5 to 9 pm The show will be open to the public on Friday, May 1, and Saturday, May 2, from 11 am to 6 pm, and on Sunday, May 3, from 11 am to 4 pm.Baird will be in attendance each day.A preview of Mr.Baird's work can be viewed on his website at www.dwightbaird.com, while more information on the exhibit can be found online at www.grovehall.ca.During the past week, many sports teams have participated in numerous games.The bantam boys\u2019 rugby team played two games recently;
