is like a ticket to freedom,\u201d says Richard Hansen, one of the cast members of Grove Hall's latest theatre production \u201cLend me aTenor\u201d which left ticket-buyers enthralled with the local talent it showcased and after the final act had them saying \u201cI wish it had lasted longer.\u201d Evidently that ticket to freedom the actors experience held equally true for audience members.Eight shows ran for two weeks from Thursday through until Saturday starting on April 16 and concluding on April 25.The script was selected simply, from the result generated by a generic Google search for \u201cthe funniest play\u201d The internet search proved accurate as howls of laughter erupted throughout the duration of the performances.Tina Bye sums up the sentiment of all of the cast when she says that they get \u201c50 times more enjoyment\u201d out of it, since they have all worked so hard to craft the scene to elicit that response.Jeremy Robidoux, who is one of the various actors One find out that they were too late and the shows had already been cast.Instead of being turned away, as would likely be the case with other venues, they were welcomed with open arms to contribute.Kylie Gergely recalls that happening to her.She was happy to be included and ended up landing a role in the end when things fell through with the initial casting of the role.Cast member, Connor Stacey, says \u201ca lot of credit has to go to the two people who are the driving force behind it: The awesome couple, Mark and Tina who really put everything into this.The driven duo proudly discuss how they have watched the actors evolve since they first encountered them.When Jeremy Robidoux , who played the lead (Max), and Gergely were asked about how Grove Hall has helped them to grow as individuals they both joked that they could go on all day and we might have to cancel that night's show because they would be too busy explaining.Mark recounts how during rehearsals he advises the actors 23.Both vehicles were going north when the tractor began to maneuver to the left into a private entrance.The driver of the car crashed into the right rear tire of the agricultural machinery says Sergeant Robert Brabant of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) of the Haut-Saint-Laurent.The driver of the tractor was a 46 year old man from Saint-Antoine-Abbé and he was not injured.The other driver was a 20 of the stolen goods is valued at $3,000.There have been no arrests yet.Two seriously injured in an accident in Saint-Chrysostome Three vehicles were involved in a collision that led to serious injuries for two motorists on the morning of Sunday April 26 on Route 203 in Saint-Chrysostome, In the first car there was a 21 year old lady from St.Constant who was driving but drove on part of the gravel shoulder and lost control of her vehicle.The car hit another vehicle that was in the oncoming lane with a 58 year old man from Sainte-Martine.There was another driver, a 51 year old from Mercier who could not avoid the accident.The occupants of the first two cars suffered serious injuries but their lives are not in danger.They were transported to the Anna-Laberge Hospital in Châteauguay.The two people who were travelling in the third vehicle were unharmed.Breaking and entering in Saint-Chrysostome Copper electrical wires were stolen from a construction site on Saint-Alexis street in Saint- Chrysostome during the night of April 25 to 26.The value of the missing goods amounts to about $3,000.The door to the construction site was damaged with stones and the contributions to the Hemmingford Archives\u2014an oil portrait of a honoured Hemmingford ancestor, a treasure discovered in the basement of the church and a 19th century laptop.The fair weathered weekend of April 25th, 2015 saw the induction of three rare contributions to the Hemmingford Archives in Hemmingford, Quebec.The event, which honoured the donation of a recently discovered set of prints featuring the Fourteen Stations of the Cross alongside an oil portrait and \u201claptop\u201d belonging to Hemmingford\u2019s own Julius Scriver, took place in the home of Pamela Stirling.It was a fitting setting, as the house itself, which still holds true to its original colonial structure, is largely considered to be a heritage site, having been constructed by one of Hemmingford's founding family members, Colonel John Scriver, in 1816.Kathleen LaPlante, who stood in the place of parish priest Father Lanthier, presented the first contribution, a set of restored coloured prints encased in a beautiful wooden chest, to the Archives.The prints, recently uncovered in the earthen floor basement of the St.Romain Church by Mr.Leonard Priest, feature the Fourteen Stations of the Cross.Priest, who is a fourth-generation Hemmingford resident and one of the nine board members of the Archives, stumbled upon the pieces entirely by chance while working on the churches\u2019 heating system.After observing that the prints were in a tragic state of disrepair, he obtained the right to restore the prints via a request to the diocese through Father Lanthier, parish priest of St.Romain Church.After being granted permission, Priest called upon the expertise of local Donald Hébert, who helped him to restore the prints to their original glory, replacing the glass and refurbishing the prints\u2019 original frames.At his own expense, Priest also commissioned cabinetmaker Jamie Patenaude to build a custom pine casket to enclose the framed prints.While not much is known about the prints themselves, they are a considerable find for the Hemmingford Archives, and according to the opinion of Hemmingford local Stanley Triggs, former curator of the Notman Photographic Archives at Montreal's McCord Museum, the prints may very well have hung in the original St.Romain Church, a smaller building that dates back to 1844\u2014and is said to have been the first Catholic Church erected in the Hemmingford area.Not without its own history, the original St.Romain Church is no longer standing, having been replaced in 1893 by what is currently known to Hemmingford residents as the present day St.Romain Church.Made of fieldstone, the building was considered grand for its time, being completed by 1894, with stained glass windows being installed a year later.Hemmingford Archive board member Mary Ducharme was in attendance to present the second and third contributions to the Archives, an oil portrait of Julius Scriver, and his portable desk, which has been dubbed by the Hemmingford Archives as Julius\u2019s \u201claptop\u201d\u2014as it was used largely for penning letters while in transit.Ducharme brought the history of the Scriver family to life with a lively presentation, honouring the achievements the painting's subject, Julius Scriver, who in his lifetime had been a prominent politician and farming advocate.Dating back to 1895, the painting is the only known portrait of the long-time Member of Parliament and grandson of one of Hemmingford's founding fathers, Frederik Scriver.Brought to life by artist W.A.Sherwood of Ontario, the portrait, which has been beautifully maintained over the years, portrays Julius Scriver in his 69th year, encased in an elaborate frame.The artefacts were donated by Julius\u2019s great-grandson, Dr.Charles Scriver, a in Herdman, knew the area quite well (and knew, of course, about its abundance of the four-legged creatures).Having never been any further than Hemmingford, | got completely and wonderfully lost between an apple orchard and a maple bush, and had to resort to asking for directions, because of course, | had no reception.At every wrong turn | took (and there were many), | was continuously amazed by the beauty of the area, and furthermore, by the kindness of the community\u2014meaning those people who very patiently helped me on my way.While | did eventually find the horse, | found something much more pre- cious\u2014a place to call home.Moving here nearly three years ago, | can\u2019t imagine our family living anywhere else.It also would most likely be quite difficult with the addition of the afore mentioned horse.Originally from Lac Brome of the Eastern Townships, | have always lived in the country, minus a brief stint in Montreal where | graduated from Concordia University with a BA in Creative Writing.Following graduation | worked as an intern for writer Mireille Silcoff for a time before moving on to the editorial staff at Spafax.As for why | decided to become a writer, | the carnival direction: Mesdames W.U.Hughes, a farmer's wife; Mrs.W.K.Philps, an exacting treasurer of considerable experience; Mrs.D.J.O'Connor as a charter member of the Hospital Board of Governors and very well known throughout the County.These three women have prevailed upon Francois Cleyn, a local successful industrialist, to work with them in setting up the essential personnel for the many committees.30 Years Ago May 1, 1985 Then and Now: Former MNA publishes Hemmingford's first history book If anyone were to set out to compile a history of Hemmingford, it would take a person with roots running deep into this closely-knit community; with knowledge of the varied styles, French and English, village and rural; and with first-hand experience with the inner workings of municipal, county and provincial governments.Such credentials belong to only one per- son\u2014Henry Alister Darby Somerville, author of the self-published volume, Hemmingford Then and Now.The book\u2019s publication culminates two years of dedicated research and writing, and a lifetime of personal observations.It will be released on May 10 at a special meeting of the Chateauguay Valley Historical Society at the Old Convent.Mr Somerville will be the guest speaker and those who assisted in the book's production will be on hand.About the Author Seated at a large desk in his home office along Somerville Place \u201cWe'll see what happens when (Mayor) Paul Viau's term is up\u201d He feels badty about Hemmingford has been split off from the MRC Haut-St-Laurent in the new regional government designations.\u201cIt was a political thing, you know;\"he says, \"the Pequists wanted to dilute the English vote\u201d Hemmingford is part of the mostly French St.Jean riding, MRC Jardins de Napierville.Alister Somerville was on the bilding committee of the Barrie Memorial Hospital and served on its Board of Governors.He holds a life membership in the Quebec Association of Protestant Celsius last year and the ten year average of 6.4° Celsius.Precipitation was normal with 62 mm or 2.4 inches of rainand 10 cm\u2019s of snow which melted toan additional 14mm or 0.6 inches of water.Syrup production, which began very slowly, finished with very large runs of excellent quality providing an average crop.The Chateauguay River ice pretty much rotted out on April 4 compared to normal breakup of March 26.The public is at the mercy of scientists who wish to make predictions.This particular prediction was made on the television program CBC \"Journal\" on April 12, 1989 in a British Documentary which stated that the world temperature had increased by 0.5° Celsius in the last 100 years and there would be a further increase in the next 40 years.Well, here we are 25 years later which should show an increase 1.87° Celsius based on that prediction.To reduce the effect of the one extreme year, | used the three year period 1988 to 1990 compared with the three year period verse ending with, \u201cNow our minds are one.\u201d It was a suitable opening for Sharing Through Our Generations, a project that was undertaken three years ago with the intention of bringing the Mohawk and Quebec communities closer together.The event, which took place at the Mohawk Casino and Resort in Awkesasne, was the realisation of an artistic project undertaken by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA), the Ministry of Culture and Communication (MCC), the Regional Conference of élus Vallée- du-Haut-Saint-Laurent -(CRE) and the Secretariat for Aboriginal Affairs (SAA).While the MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent was not was an official partner of the event, their participation was recognized by the MCC.The goal, to bring the communities of Akwesasne and Quebec together through artistic collaboration, resulted in the following idea: To take, according to certain criteria, one Akwesasne artist and one artist from the Haut-Saint- Laurent area, and to immerse them in each other's cultures, resulting in a series of artistic works reflective of their experiences.The artists chosen were John Ryan of Godmanchester, QC, and Natasha Smoke Santiago of the Akwesasne community, who were first introduced at the Akwesasne Pow- Wow in September.Filmmaker Alain Boisvert was selected to record the artistic process.Each artist prepared their own murals, followed by a final trio of collaborative pieces.The murals portrayed how each artist was affected by what he/she learned during these cultural expeditions.Natasha Smoke Santiago Opting for a seasonal theme, long-time artist Natasha Smoke Santiago chose to focus on the landmarks that had influenced her most during her visits to the Haut-Saint-Laurent area.The first of four paintings, which stand approximately seven feet high and five feet wide, portray the ruins of the Calvin Presbyterian church, or as it is known to the locals, the \u201cLaguerre Ruins,\u201d looked over by a young character in a boldly coloured tuque.The second depicts the Powercourt Covered Bridge, or the \u201cPercy Bridge\u201d, which spans the Chateauguay River, while the third showcases the Tsiionhiakwatha/Droulers site in Saint-Anicet.The fourth is a little different, focusing on a human subject rather than a landmark.When asked about what inspired her change in focus, Natasha's answer is moving.She explained that that despite the differences in our communities, itis music that brings us all together, making it, for her, the most memorable moment of the collaborative experience.The inspiring event?The Branches and Roots Festival in Ormstown\u2014 with the folk music of the Yves Lambert Trio, in particular.Using mixed mediums, Natasha completed the four pieces within four months, then turning her attention to the collaborative murals, a series of three canvases that she worked on with John Ryan.John Ryan Local artist John Ryan was selected to represent the Haut-Saint-Laurent area.A longtime contributor to The Gleaner with his cartoons and an artist for 39 years, John Ryan toured the Akwesasne community alongside Natasha in order to fully experience Mohawk traditions.The result was a series of three paintings that created one mural, using oil on stretched canvas to share what influenced him most during his time in Akwesasne.Ryan, who specialized in art in university, expressed that he was most taken with the Thompson Island Medicine Walk, where the guide taught them about natural remedies used to treat common ailments.The theme of lacrosse was present throughout his work, with a focus on the sport affecting both the young and older members of the community.When asked about the portrayal of the sport within his work this was, he explained that lacrosse, which finds its origins in aboriginal culture, is a means of bonding within the community, as well as a way to settle disputes, even now that it has become such a massive sport.The mural also depicted the activities of basket making by the homemakers, and four generations of Mohawks trapping.The final canvas paid homage to the Mohawks steel workers, in particular to one individual, whose work as a steel worker and an artist inspired John Ryan to paint the majestic eagle that is considerably central to the mural.When asked how much he Fe knew about Mohawk culture before this artistic expedition, Ryan, with a humble smile, admitted that he knew very little.When asked how he feit about it now, he said that he felt that his eyes had been opened.Project Theme One theme that was prevalent between both of the artists was water, which could be seen in the collaborative murals, which was a series of three canvases.Unveiled to the public for the first time that evening, the murals captured the cross-cultural exchange of two individuals.Natasha Smoke Santiago said it best, explaining that while the water is what divides our communities, it is also what brings us together.@T4:Sharing the experience The entire artistic process was documented by Alain Boisvert, who teased the audience with a trailer of the documentary.Boisvert has been working in film since the 1980s, kick-starting his career with an apprenticeship program at the National Film Board of Canada.His documentary, which takes a closer look the artistic processes of John Ryan and Natasha Smoke Santiago, is due to be released in June
