adopted on March 22, was presented to some thirty elected officials and participants at a meeting on Wednesday at the Salle Alfred-Langevin in Huntingdon."It brings together 36 projects and actions that will be carried out over the next five years. They are based on three areas of development aimed at promoting and highlighting agriculture, dynamic occupation of the territory and developing agricultural businesses.«lt is essential to have this kind of Plan in order to protect our wealth and increase our development to its full potential, » emphasized Prefect, Louise Lebrun.«it will denis.bourbonnais@tc.tc PREVENTION.The issues surrounding sexting and intimidation using cell phones and the internet among young people is addressed in two short videos created by a videographer from Hinchinbrooke.LaTable de concertation Jeunesse du Haut-Saint-Laurent, the Youth Table for Haut-Saint-Laurent, launched two short, preventive videos aimed at parents, on Tuesday in the Alfred-Langevin Cultural Hall at the «Château » in Huntingdon.«The aim of the video-clips is to encourage parents to talk to their children openly and without judgement about violence on social media networks, » explained Nathalie Collin, Director of the Maison des jeunes in Huntingdon.«The creative and humorous videos deal, in particular, with the subject of dating violence. These days, it can be difficult for parents to keep up with the rapid changes in technology, » she continued. The videos, entitled, «Aime-toi plus que lui!/Choose yourself» and «Derrière l’écran/Behind the screen» were made in French and English by Lianne Finnie. They are already available on Facebook and YouTube at the following links: www.youtube.com/watch ?2v=vZXnlirxIcpA (sexting) and www.youtube.com/ watch v=cZFD1cz FRk (intimidation).Parents of teenagers will be connected through community organizations in the Haut-Saint-Laurent and high schools in the territory.«Youth organizations are concerned about these two issues and would like to provide parents with relevant resources, » insisted Nathalie Leduc, Coordinator for prevention activities with Espace Suroit.Annie Lavoie and Randy Johnston, representatives from Student Services at Arthur-Pigeon and Châteauguay Valley Regional (CVR) high schools, talked about establishing an action plan to support students in situations of intimidation or threatening sexting. The Sûreté du Québec and DPJ (Youth Protection) are involved in the process.Awareness among parents is also very important, especially now that prevention needs to begin in elementary school.«The video clips were created to encourage parents to monitor what their children are doing when they are alone in front of their screens.Sexting and intimidation on social media is something we need to be talking about, » concluded Nathalie Collin.4 3 a Hey babe xx Send me a sexy pic ;) Creative and humorous video clips were produced to encourage a dialogue between parents and their TC Média Archives) ADAÉE BEAULIEU TRANSLATED BY CATHLEEN JOHNSTON adaee.beaulieu@tc.tc HEALTH.Several towns in the Montérégie have been added to the 2016 list of municipalities whose residents are at risk of exposure to ticks carrying Lyme Disease.Others have had their risk level raised. This information is revealed on the 2016 provincial map published on February 24 by the National Institute of Public Health.Salaberry-de-Valleyfield as well as a number of municipalities in the Haut-Saint-Laurent are considered areas of «moderate risk» for contracting the disease.Dr François Milord, medical advisor for the organization, mentioned that two factors can cause a change to a municipality's risk level. The first is the discovery of well established tick colonies in the municipality. This is done through field work carried out in wooded areas where ticks, which can carry the disease, live. The second factor is the number of people in the municipality who have contracted the disease. For this information, the Direction de la santé publique (DSP) contacts physicians who are obliged to report any cases of the disease. The physician will indicate the probable area where his patient would have come in contact with an infected tick. For a municipality to be considered at moderate risk, at least three cases have to have been reported.According to Milord, it is difficult for a municipality to achieve a level below moderate risk, because prevention measures are aimed at informing the population but not at decreasing the incidence of ticks.«Ifticks are to be destroyed in a wooded area, significant interventions must be carried out on the natural environment, either by decreasing the animal population since ticks live on animals, or by using chemical products, » he explained.SPREAD Lyme Disease, which originates in the United States, has reached Québec and is gradually spreading.«The number of cases is slowly increasing so that, from year to year, there will be more municipalities with at least three cases,» mentioned DrMilord to explain the addition of new towns on the list.He indicated, however, that it is difficult to predict if ticks carrying the disease will eventually be found throughout Québec.Since the Montérégie is one of the regions most at risk, the specialist fears that there is a good chance its wooded areas will be affected in the next few years.(N.D,LR.: The interactive map is accessible on our web site, www.the-gleaner.ca) How to protect yourself Stay on pathways Symptoms Painless skin rash, more than 5 cm around the site Keep skin HEALTH, For some people, just the thought of spring in the air is enough to cause fits of sneezing, watery eyes and a runny nose, If you're among those who struggle with springtime allergies, antihistamine-based medication is your strongest ally! In fact, there are several things you can do to alleviate those irritating allergy symptoms. The best way to prevent an allergic reaction is to avoid coming in contact with the allergen in question. However, when it comes to an entire pollen-filled season, that’s a lot easier said than done.Unless you plan on hibernating for the duration of the pollinating period, you'll have to find other ways to reduce your exposure to seasonal irritants. For example, avoid going outdoors as much as possible on days when the pollen index is at its highest. In addition, make sure to keep your car and house windows securely shut until the worst of the season is over. And if you're usually in charge of lawn-mowing duties, it's wise to delegate the task to someone without allergies until the end of spring.Next, it's important to note that pollen is notorious for clinging to fabrics, skin and hair.Upon returning from the outdoors, make sure to shower and change your clothes without delay. To avoid contaminating your bed, wash up before climbing in — and don't forget to rinse your hair! Furthermore, refrain from using the clothesline to dry out your laundry, and never leave the house without a pair of sunglasses in hand. You'll want to protect your eyes from the pollen and ragweed particles in the air.(TC MEDIA) f RE Pollen is notorious for clinging to fabrics. This spring, avoid the clothesline to reduce your risk of an allergic reaction.Photo TC Média G - £107 w61 |1udy ‘Aepsaupap - erusuea)b-ayymmm 6 - Wednesday, April 19” 2017 - www.the-gleaner.ca What to do if your dog experiences separation anxietv ANIMALS.Does your dog act up every time you leave the house, even if only for a few minutes? If so, your pup probably suffers from separation anxiety.Read on to learn more about this common condition and its possible solutions.Leaving a dog alone can prompt a number of undesirable behaviours, such as: « Barking, whining or howling - Urinating or defecating in inappropriate places « Hyperactivity + Destroying household items or furniture If your dog regularly turns the house upside down during your absence, or if your neighbours often complain about incessant barking, puni-shing your furry friend is not the solution! Maple syrup is packed with polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants, as well as the plant hormones abscisic acid (ABA) and phaseic acid. The latter two chemicals speed up the body's ability to process glucose, thus giving maple syrup its low glyce- mic index. In a nutshell, when it comes to choosing a sweetener to use in your favourite recipes, you can turn to maple syrup without too much guilt! Just remember that it’s still a high-sugar food and should be consumed in moderation.(TC MÉDIA) Our extras / Fame / Heading / Color / Bold Ask your call centre agent today!
