preserve a representative sample of our country for Canadians of today and of tomorrow; 2- to develop and maintain the park and it its facilities and to offer programs and activities which are compatible with its primary objective of conservation; 3- to ofter visitors a nature interpretation program enabling them to learn about the park and its natural characteristics.LA MAURICIE NATIONAL PARK The Park was established in August 1970 in order to preserve a representative sample if the Canadian Shield.The Park theme is \u201cLaurentian Heritage\u201d.The numerous rounded wills, lakes and streams of the Park come in sharp contrast with the low lands of the St Lawrence Valley.THE PHYSICAL COMPONENTS Three large natural corridors make up the Park: the valley of lac Wapizagonke and lac Antikagamac, the valley of lac & la-Péche, lac Edouard and lac des Cings and finally the valley of the St.Maurice River.This is an oasis of tranquility characterized by a varied forest cover inhabited by a bountiful and varied fauna.300,000 persons visit La Mauricie each year.It is up to each one of them to help Parks Canada attain the objectives mentioned | À park under development we available: 2 \u2014 L'HEBDO DU ST-MAURICE \u2014 PARKS CANADA \u2014 JULY 9 La Mauricie National Park has been under development for the past ten years.The time has come to see what has been accomplished, what will be done this year and what is planned in future years.Approximately 80% of the developments included in the park master plan have been accomplished.The initial months and - years of the park were spent learning about the natural environment of the park, its potential and planning its development.Following a public consultation program, a master development plan was approved by the Minister responssible for Parks Canada.This plan is based on the following concept: two main entrances linked by a 62 km parkway.Along this road or corridor major facilities are to be constructed to lodge and accomodate users.The idea is to favour a healthy distribution of visitors along the corridor of the parkway.For the 1980 summer oO © ® season, approximately 3 of + the will be in the western part of the Park from the Saint-Mathieu entrance to the 3rd look-out (27 km); in the eastern part of the Park from the Saint-Jean-des- Piles entrance to the Lac Soumire halt (18km).parkway Four major visitor activity areas are included in the master plan.Three are available for the current summer season: Wapizagonke-South area (including Shewenegan and I'Esker picinic grounds and Mistagance campground), Wapizagonke- North area (a picnic ground and a major campground) and Rivière-à-la-pêche area (a campground and the main hiking trail).NEW IN 1980 What is new this season?The 3rd look-out located north of Lac Wapizagonke, 27km from the Saint-Mathieu entrance.A visit to this site is a must and will prove to be a highlight of your visit.Two new parking areas will facilitate access to the back- country for canoers: the Lac du Fou and Lac Soumire halts.The lac Bouchard picnic ground located 8km away from the Saint-Jean- des-Piles entrance is also a novelty.Important improvements have been made to the Rivière-à-la-Pêche campground.It is now possible to have woodfires on all campsites.Play equipment for children has been installed.This campground can now meet family camping requirements.The canoe-camping sites of lac Wapizagonke have all been redeveloped.They can now accommodate more users and have been designed and constructed to reduce the impact of campers on the natural milieu.Approximately Vs of all portages in the park have been redone of vastly improved.Additional improvements have been made to La Clairiére group camping area, to Shewenegan and I'Esker picnic grounds and to the Wapizagonke campground.A permanent warden station is available at the Saint-Jean-des-Piles entrance.Signs for the park on highway 55 have been installed byTransport Québec.We are thankful for their cooperation.PROJECTS IN 1980 Paving the parkway and constructing the Lac Edouard day use area are the two main projets.This years other projets include a second warden station at the eastern entrance, a small picnic area at the 2nd lookout, an interpretation trail in the Wapizagonke-North area, interventions to protect l\u2019Ile- aux-Pins.Work will also continue in the backcountry aimed at improving portages and primitive campsites.FUTURE PROJECTS From 1981 to 1984 \u2018approximately, development projects will focus mostly in the Saint-Jean-des Piles area.They will consist of erecting a permanent visitor reception and nature interpretation center, constructing the park administration office building and the park maintenance campground.Management and staff of La Mauricie National Park sincerely heoe that services, programs and facilities available to you this season will allow you a pleasant stay.We regret the inconveniences that may result from park development projects.We urge you to be extra careful when driving on the parkway in view of the heavy vehicle circulation necessitated by the paving of the road.Park\u201d.earlier.They can do so by June and should be completed some time in September.This project also includes asphalting the following parking areas: the 2nd and 3rd look-outs, Lac Bouchard picnic area, access points to back country at Lacs du Fou, Soumire, Ecarté, Alphonse, Gabet and Caribou.The access road, campground loops and the parking area ot Wapizagonke activity center will also be paved this fall following the camping season.The central portion of the parkway from the Lac Soumire halt to the 3rd look-out will not be accessilble during the construction period, for reasons of public safety.The 63 km parkway should normally be available to the public this fall.___ | J Lac Edouard day use area Parc Visitors will be able to use picnic and swimming facilities at Lac Edouard by the summer of 1981.Work on a parking area and two service buildings began in early June.This follows contruction last fall of an access road to the eventual parking area.The parking area will accomodate 222 vehicules; The service buildings will contain a snack-bar, a first-aid station, sanitary facilities, changing rooms and a canoe rental station.The project also includes the installation of generators,drinking water and a boat ramp for access to the lake.The Lac Edouard area offers the best potential in the Park for swimming.Other activities will include: picniking canoing, tishing and sailing.> + Parks Canada Parks Canada 1885-1985 : A HUNDRED YEARS OF CONSERVATION = TE _\u2014 \"à om =m Bi \u2026 ve + dh 2 - Importance of park wardens, Conservation of nature: A DEFINITE CHALLENGE To ensure protection of a natural environnemennt while \u2018marking the area avaible to the public is a challenge which the park wardens have undertaken.They will be the link between visitors and their impact on the park's natural ressources.\u2019 To help nature they must co-ordinate, supervise or work towards a greater knowledge of natural resources (vegetation and fauna).They ensure their protection (visitor impact studies, forest fires and nuisance insects control creel census).Finally wardens must intervene where necessary (bear and beaver control, tree planting and other forest improvement works).All this work will be effective only if visitors use the park accordingly.The warden is there fore, a buffer Aquatic environmental control remains a primary \u2018Importance The \u201cCoeur du Québec\u201d is a real fisherman's paradise.Some 12,000 fishermen catch up to 20,000 fish yearly.This represents about 5,000 kilograms.The most common species caught is the speckled trout which accounts for 90% of the catch.Although encouraged as an activity, such an exploitation could cause irreparable damage to fish stocks if uncontroled.Therefore, the conservation service has established a fish management program to insure rational exploitation of this ressource.Studies in laboratories and in the field have allowed us to set a quota system (in kilogram) for each lake, which represents a yearly production rate for that lake.Daily statistics of catches determine when the lake's quota has been reached, it is then closed for the season.This allows exploitation of fish without disturbing production capacities.After each season, a central computrer makes a global tally.This gives us information for guidelines for auotas and how they may b e readjusted.For 8 years, an average of 12,000 visitors have used various lakes and waterways in the park.Fishing success has remained stable even though a fish stocking program has not been used.We therefore conclude that a natural control is preferable over artificial stocking, especially since the principle aim of of a national park is to safeguard part of our natural inheritance.agent against abuse, using law enforcement when surprising and dangerous.To avoid these possibilities, visitors should never feed wild animals, keep their camp site clean, keep all foodstuffs in car- trunk or away from the tent, and never approach prodedure is compulsory registration for certain park activities such as: fishing, canoe-camping, backcountry camping and scuba-diving.This registration procedure is aimed at co-ordinating back- country use, thus permitting maximum use with minimum impact on the environment.Use permit for these activities are available free of charge at the visitor reception centers.These permits enable us to control use of lakes and backcountry campsites and take necessary action in case of emergencies.This control system provides us with use statistics that are analysed each year.This exercise enables us
