it is to the effect that the proportion of stipends which parishes or missions shall pay, in each case, be ascertained by the Archdeacon or Rural Dean to be sent by the Bishop for the purpose. It was also decided that the secsnd recommendation in the report be carried into effect at the close of the present canonical year ; it provides that the sustentation fund be devoted to the general support of missionaries, and the supplemental grant be abolished. The following committee, to confer with Canon Du Vernet on the subject of a church membership register, was appointed : Revs.Carmichael, Henderson, and Belcher, and Messrs.Bethune, Dawson, Davidson, and White.A grant of.$200 to’ Rev, Mr, Clayton was made, to enable him THE MONTREAL DAILY STAR: THURSDAY.AUGUST 9, 1877.to recruit his health, which had become seriously impaired.TRE LONGUEUIL EXCURSION.—We have Teceived the following letter from the Secretary of the club, in explanation of the disappointment experienced on Tuesday evening:— To the Editor of THE STAR : SIR,— Seeing the bad state of the weather last evening, the committee of the Longueuil Boating Club decided to postpone the evening excursion, although the preparations were complete, A telegram was immediately sent to the city to inforn any of our friends who might be waiting on the wharf, but it was unforlunately delayed. This will explain the inconvenience which occurred at the Island wharf, complained of by one of the morning papers, and which the committee very much regret.I may mention that, on the printed notices and tickets, we expressly stated that it would be held ‘weather permitting,” and as the evening turned out very cold and disagreeable, we did not think it advisable to hold it, and, as above stated, iminediately wired to the cily.We intend to have the excursion at an early day, when we trust the “clerk of the weather” may be in better humor.Due notice will be given to our friends in the city.Yours +ruly, J.Tmos.OsTELL, Secretary L.B, C.ACCIDENTALLY SHoT.—Constable Hotlin, while near the canal at 12:30 a.m., having beard a shot fired in the direction of Black’s bridge, proceeded to the place, ac- ccmpanied by a watchman named Furlong, where they found a man lying wounded on Mill street. Two men were standing over him, who, on being t:ken in custody, gave their names as M cmahon and Holliday.Another young man, one of the party, who had gone on some distance ahead, returned when he heard the shot, and was arrested, together with the other prisoners, and the whole party were taken to the Water Police station. This young man gave his name ag Thomas Kemp, but did not know how the shooting occurred.A Mr.Thompson, who happened to be driving by in his buggy when the shot was fired, assisted the officers, ard afterwards procured a carriage to remove the wounded man, who was tiken to the hospital. He gave his name as John McCulloch, and stated in the presence of several witnesses that he had shot himself accidentally.McCulloch had on his person when searched two revolvers, the chambers of the cylinder of one these weapons being empty. The ball penetrated his thigh in a downward direction but did not go very far in.Dr, Cline succeeded in extracting it this morning; it is very small, being what is known asa No.2.This morning the prisoners were brought before the Police Magistrate on a charge of carrying concealed weapons.Their names are Robert McMahon, 19.fireman, 133 Forfar street; Arthur Halliday, 19, fireman, 19 Etienne street, and Thomas Kemp, 21, turner, 141 Forfar street. The two former had revolvers and they pleaded guilty. From what can be learned of the affair it appears that the four young men, who are Orangemen, had been escorting a brother member to Hochelaga and had got as far as Black’s bridge, when some *larking” was indulged in, whereupon Kemp left them and almost immediately afterwards the shot was fired, accidentally,as stated by McCul- lech. The Sorel Fire.Last Monday night a firs broke out in the house of Mr.Chas Gelinas, a well-known trader in Sorel. The house was uninhabited at the time as repairs were being made, and every precaution was taken bythe workmen to gusrd against fire; no shavings or other inflammatory material were allowed to remain over night, and how the fire eccur- red is a mystery. The alarm was given at 3 a.m., and during the night previous to this hour, the police patrol, and before then Mr.Kitison passed by the building but saw no signs of fire. The Gazette de Sorel says that every circumstance in connection with this fire points to the work of an incendiary.A man was seen immediately after the fire quietly walking down the street and crying out fire, and it is thought that he may be the guilty party, but he is net known. The fire is supposed to have been set to the basement, as all the doors and windows were closed when the firemen arrived. There has been no fire in Sorel since the 16th June last.Health Committee. At a meeting of this Committee, Ald.Childs in the chair, the following sub-com- mittee report was read and adopted :—Hav- ing heard the complaints against the Fertilizing Company, while there is no doubt of foundation for some of them, we do not consider they are such as the Committee can take any action upon, more especially as the Company has shown every desire to rectify error when pointed out.The Committee desire to impress the Company with the neceseity of taking the utmost care in estimating the quantity of material they remove, and to be especially particular that their apparatusis in perfect condition and thorough workingorder. The Committee has every reason to believe that Mr.Cyphiot was actuated by the best motives, and had no other object in view in bringing the question of sewage removal before the Committee than to make the system as effective as possible. The chairman called attention to a complaint as regards the defective system of registering the condition of patients at the small-pox hospitals, and more particularly to a certain case where a patient died and his friends were only informed of the fact two days afterwards, although inquiries had been made at the Health Office every day.‘The matter gave rise to some discussion, during which an investigation was suggested, but no decision was arrived at.New Aivetisements To-Day, YARN S JUST RECEIVED, BEST FINGER AND WHEELING Y ARXS | AU Colors!
