in proof of which they appended a schedule showing the description, situation, valuation, amounts advanced, repaid and still due, with the nature of the security held by the sn.ciety on all properties on which advances have been made sinc: its foundation in 1872.Twenty-two appropriations have been made during the past year, amounting in all to $36,400.There remains due on sixteen appropriations unclaimed of the past year, $25,080, and on three unclaimed in former years, $7,880.Total, $32,960.To satisfy these, the balance, as shown in the statement, $11,191.85, is of ccuise inadequate, but as there is no pr >ba- bility of many of them being required - at once, and revenue is constantly flowing in, no apprehensions of inability to meet them all honorably, when required, need be entertained, After the usual routine business, the following gentlemen were elected directors for the ensuing year: Messrs, Robert Miller, George Martin, John Martin, C B Carter, W H Kerr, J B Hutchison, Richard Jellyman, H C Collins, William Stenhouse, J W Robinson, W D Stroud, M S Baxter, J T Sadler, Robert Kinlay, and William Samuel.Auditors: E S Rosy, S Cookson, and E A Alston.A vote of thanks was moved by Mr.George Martin to the retiring officers, which was unanimously carried, and the meeting then adjourned.Social Assembly. The social assembly of welcome to the new pastar, Rev.Mr.Wright, given last night in Chalmers’ church was a decided success, about 400 people being present. The chair was occupied by the Rev.James Fleck, A.B., beside whom sat Rev.8.Somerville Stobbs, Rev.Robert Laing, Rev.R.H.Warden, Rev.Mr, Black and Rev, Peter Wright. After the opaning hymn, prayer was offered by the Rev.Mr.B .‘ The chairman then rose and said he was clerk, who forged the Clerk of the Crown’s : The prisoner was sent to more difficult ber py to welcome the Rev, Peter Wright to the pastorate of this church, and he did so most cordially. He was too well known to this church to need commendation. The speaker had moderated on many occasions in this church and he had a high opinion of it; and knowing the church so well, he thought Rev.Mr.Wright was just the man to make a happy union. He thought if every one minded his own work and would not dictate to their minister, but let him do hisduties and co-operace with him when asked, it would help him on better. He said the congregation of this church could not be aczused of want of zea’; it wasgn excess of it that was not desirable. If they were to be aggressive they must be at- tractiveand then they could be as oppressive as they liked.Let them support their mia- ister; if they could not help him they could at least cheer him.The speaker closed by saying he had great pleasure in welcoming Mr, Wright, ~The choir then sang the anthem, ‘“ R joi-e in tke Lord.” Rev.Mr.8.Stobbs, in his opening remarks, joined in welcoming Rev.Mr.Wright to his new charge. He was glad when he came to Montreal to see so many churches. He compared the church to a ship who had a good sailing master in the person of Mr.Wright, and Le wishad the vessel a long and eafe voyage. He oongrabalated the congregation ont having a good church, and,~what was there than to get, a good minister ; Rev.Mr.Wright was the right mau in the right [place.‘ Chalmers’ Churé4 had a grod name in Montreal. The speaker referred to the arduous duties of a preacher, which, when realized, should make a congregation more tolerant.Judging frem hjs own personal observation, he was sore this church was a live one, and this was owing to their Sunday School, the nursery, he might say, of the church. He closed by wishing them prosperity, and retired amid suppressed demonstrations of applause, The ‘anthem, ¢ Thine, O Lord, is the Greatness,” was next sung.Rev.Mr.Laing then addressed the meeting. He said he would like to see every church in this city waited like a family working for the cause of Christ. He advised them to be a missionary congregation among themselves.Let them extend their labors and their church would become great. An intermission for refreshments was then allowed, during which the Rev.Mr.‘Wright was introduced and addressed a few words. He was not going to make any lengthened remarks ; ag their new minister it would not be proper for him, on this occasion, and more especially during the time set aside for refreshments, to take up their time with a long address. As previous speakers had said, a traly spiritual life will assert itself, and he looked forward to the time when the present building would not be large enough to accommodate persons that would attend. He exhorted his hearers to follow the example set in the Presbyterian churches and attend regularly at church, as every one of the congregation should be in his place on Sabbaths just as well as the minister. He then alluded to the benefits to be derived from prayer meetings. There were hundreds and hundreds of Presbyterian churches steeped in debt, and it was imperative on them to do all in their power to free their church from whatever indebtedness existed, without depending on outside aid.He thanked the chairman for the kind manner in which he had introduced him to his new congregation, snd withdrew amid applause. Those who desired then went down to the lecture-room below and partook of the refreshments provided for them. After enjoying a social chat and the good things laid before them, they returned to their seats, and the rest of the programme gone through consisted of singing the anthem ¢* Jerusalem, my glorious home ” by the choir and a short address appropriate to the occasion by Rev.R.H.Warden.The proceedings were brought to a cloge with “God Save the Queen.” The benediction having been pronounced the large assembly dispersed.Recelesiastical Liberality.Dr.William M.Taylor recently attended a Presbyterian service in the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Lucerne, Switzerland. The cathedral belongs tothe canton, and the civic authorities of the canton let whom they choose worship in it.Dr.Taylor asked himself, Would the Free Church of Scotland or the Presbyterian or Congregationalists of America exterd alike courtesy to the Roman Catholics?Tne question, he says, has get him thinking.Tricks of Travellers.(From the London Mayfair.) I was sitting the other day in the office of the manager of one of our great railways, when there entered a highly-respectable inspector, who opened the conversation by observing, in the calmest possible manner, ‘ We have found another child, sir.” The remark was made in such a matter-of-fact tone that I naturally arrived at the concla- sion that a child had been discovered playing amopg the luggage, or left behind in a carrigge by a distracted mother. It turned out, however, that the child had actually been found carefully wrapped up ; first in à copy of the Weekly Dispatch, next in a copy of the Daily Telegraph, and thirdly, in an outside cover of stout brown paper. Finally, it was left in the rack of a first-class railway carriage. It was, of course, dead, and hal been taken to the Lef: Luggage Office, where it remained till evidence of something unpleasant about it led to the parcel being opened.Bismarck and His Cigar.During the great war between France and Germany, Prince Bismarck, ¢ the man of blood and iron,” was the actorin an incident of a most suggestive and gentle nature. The Prince js said to be a smoker ardently attahed to the ¢ weed.” He is reported to have said : ‘‘ The value of a good cigar is best understood when it is the last you possess, and there is no chance of getting another.” Most devotees of tobacco in any form scem to delightin their boniage to it, and to be miserable if deprived of it.It is said that Bismarck bad cher'shed his last cigar all through a battle, in glad anticipation of the luxury in store for him, when he suddenly and gladly deprived himself of the smoke-giving solace. In his own words, Z
