350 bushelsof oats ; 1, 254 bushels of bailey ; 6,067 bbls, of flour; 16 bbls.of ashes ; 273 packages of butter ; 2,681 boxes of cheese ; 210 bbls.of pork ; 112 bbls.of lard ; 89 dressed hogs; 77 rolls of leather and 161 bundles of hides.THE CABLE COMPANIES.Meeting in London.À special cable despatch says that a statutory meet'ng of the direct United States Cable Company was held in London yesterday.Mr.John Pender was chairman and made a speech, in which he said that three important objects had been obtained by the amalgamation with theAnglo-AmericanCom- pany, viz.: The abolition of a disastrous competition which was considered destructive of the interests of the shareholders ; religious questions of the day are vigorously treated by its numerous contributors, among whom may bs found some of the ablest contemporary writers in both hemispheres.It advocates a purer literature, the elevation of the standard of public morality, the reform of the law of nations and the establishment of international arbitration ; in science, it aims at erecting a bulwark against modern religions scepticism; in art,at intelligent criticism ; in politics, at an improvement of the relations of the United States with other nations.The International Review has already won a foremost which have been related to us on unquestioned authority.The story is of the Enoch Arden type, and may be relied on as being perfectly true.A number of years ago a Montreal man got married to a young lady here, and, shortly after, being attracted by the glowing accounts received from the land of gold in California, set cut tor the Golden Gate to better his fortune.At first he continued to correspond with Lis young wife, but the letters ceased and information arrive ed that he had fallen a victim to the mar- derous propensities of one of the hoodlums ”’ who infested the city of San Francisco.Being assured of the trath of the report the lady married again, but her happiness wag not of long duration as the second husband soon after died.She was not destined, however, to be long a widow, as a third suitor soon presented himself in the person of a gentleman well off in real estate business.He offered his hand and was accepted.The marriage was a happy one,and all went well until news arrived that the first husband was alive and well in San Francisco, This information was soon followed by letters from the truant himself, asking the woman he had abandoned so infamously to come out to him.Now comes a strange chapter which our informant was not able to explain.The lady, although professing to be deeply attached to the third husband and resolved to cling to him no matter what might happen, went out to California in response to the letters she received.She did not remain long, however, but came back, when the door that was opened to her before was now closed, and the man she had last plighted her troth to having taken legal advice, declined to acknowledge her as his wife.This was the saddest blow of all, and has fallen with crushing weight upon the unfortunate victim of man’s neglect.The lady bears the highest character and is visiting greatly esteemgd by those who know her.Action Against the City tor $8,000.Mr.Jesse Joeeph, through his solicitors, Messrs.Judah, Wurtele & Branchaud, has entered an action against the city to recover $3,000 that was awarded him for damages to his property.It appears that the Council havinglowered the grade in St.Monique and St.Margaret streets, the property there situated belonging to Mr, Joseph was injured.After considerable trouble and delay in endeavoring unsuccessfully to get an amicable settlement with the Corporation, Mr.Joseph was forced to apply or a mandamus to have commissioners appointed to value the property.The commissioners were at length appointed and they awarded him $3,000 damages, Messrs, Pap- Imeau & Durand, notaries, were directed by the officials of the Corporation to make out a discharge for Mr.Joseph to sign.They did, so, and on receiving a letter from Mr.Durand that the document was ready, Mr.Joseph called and signed it in good faith, the notaries an order on the Treasary of the city for the amount.On presenting the order the officials of the Corporation declined to pay him in fall, alleging there was an arrear of taxes due by him standing over since 1867.This Mr.Joseph repudiates, and has entered the action to compel payment of the full amount awarded him.receiving from The Medical Forgery Case.This case was continued to-day.Dr.William Beauttie, M, D , sworn and examined by Mr.Mosseau, Q.‘\\.—I never presented myself before the Board of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Lower Canada; I sent my first money, $10.00, to Dr.Pelletier, and $3 to Dr.‘Worthington through the post-office ; I gave my proxy to Dr.Worthington to be used at the triennial meeting held at Three Rivers in J uly last; Ido not know the handwriting in the body of the license now shown me, To Mr.Carter, Q C.—I gent the money to Dr, Worthington some time in June last; it was at his own request I sentit ; it was a written request by letter ; to the best of my recollection the letter related to my proxy, and the vote at the meeting of the Board, and to enable him to use same ; the letter contains no reference to a license to my knowledge ; my impression is that Dr.Worthington thought I was duly registered at that time; 1 have not got the letter ; I never keep copies of letters.Mr, Kerr objected to anything but the actual letter being produced, and an argument ensued.His Honor ruled that the witness should give the substance of the letter.Witness.—The answer, ag near as I can recollect, was, * Enclosed you will find proxy,” and I also wrote him about the $3, but if in that letter, I don't recollect.Previously to this I did not inform Dr.Worthington that I had no license.I sent two proxies to Dr.Worthington ; I sent the second because the first was not correct ; don’t recollect wherein it was incorrect ; it was not because I had not received my license.The second proxy was sent to Dr.Worthington before I had received my license ; that I wrote to Dr.Pelletier and got his receipt, which I considered entitled me to practise until the next meeting of the Board.I cannot explain why Dr.Worth- ington was the person who procured it, except that he wrote to me and said he would procure my license for me.It was after or about the time that T informed him that I held a receipt that Dr.‘Worthington said he would procure my license for me, cannot be quite certain as to the time ; Dr.Worthington never called on me, nor did I see him after the meeting of the Board at Three Rivers ; Dr.Worthington spoke to me about the matter since I have been in town to give evidence ; he told me he thought it was a “malicious piece of business,” or something to that effect ; he asked me no questions as to what I could say on the matter; he did ask me what I had done with his letters, or if I had them.Dr.Fenwick objected to the case bein carried on in absence of his counsel who hal temporarily left the room.After considerable delay examination continued.I told him I had searched and had only a part of the letter ; I did not show him the two letters I produced, nor did I tell him the import of them ; he said he did not see why I bad been subpænaed on this case or words to that effect.Cross-examined by Mr.Kerr:—I am a New Advertisements this pin GREAT CHEAP SALE.Of Black Lustrer, at PILON'S.Of black Mes inos, at PILON’S.Of Black Paramattas, at PILONS.Of Black he is going to keep a brothel, as he always kept one since he came to Montreal ; they are not married ; his pretended wife is a prostitute ; they are la crosse et de la canmaille (low and disreputable) we (Mrs.Marechal and Mrs.Genin) will do all we can to prevent him from carrying on his business.” Mrs.Marechal added, I will employ Bourgeois’ own fiiends to damage his trade arid make him lose his license, and that if he closed his place five minutes after hours I will have him arrested.” Since deponant had left Genin’s she heard Mrs.Genin, one of the accused, tell Mr.Bourgeois that ‘she was a prostitute, a thief, a trickster, and that she had robbed her of a chain to decorate her person, to parade the street as a prostitute.” The accused, Mrs.Genin and Mrs.Marechal, had said that they circulated these accusations so as to hurt complainant's business.The depoition of Jean Suprani, pedler, cor- 10borates the previous deposition.The case was continued till Wednesday next, THE BANK LIBEL CASE ENDED.Mr.Campbell Apologises and the Prorecution is Withdrawn.street.ROOMS, New Advertisements thls pm F! «Jtwill be more strange if he is not,” said Everard, ¢¢and I think, George Darrill, it would be as well for you to take Theodore with you.The voyage would do him no harm.It would take him away from bad company, give him new ideas, and make him what he really is in one sense, the son of a gentleman, There is not the slightest doubt of his paternity ; every tenant on the Brookdale estate would recognize him as a Temple at once, were he by any chance to be seen down there.” “‘ And he might have been,” Ada said, with a gloomy glance at her husband ; m they most con- J answered, ¢ unless the change of climate is fatal to my constitution, I don't think I ought to have started without medical ad.“vice, when you know how delicate I am.Grantley waved an adieu to both, The dock, with its uncouth crowd of laboring men, and its busy traffic, was not a pleasant place for leave-taking.Not even the lovers of Mantua could have put any romance into their last impassioned farewell, had it been fated to take place in the midst of hurrying passengers, coils of rope, and thick-voiced sailors, who made such noisy and malodorous accessories to the parting scene in the muddy end of the river near Tower-hill.; but every essential purpose of the sky might, as far as we know, be answered, if once in three days or thereabouts, a great, black, ugly rain-cloud was broken up over the blue, and everything well watered, and so left blue again until the next time, with perhaps a film of morning and evening mist for dew.But, instead of this, there is not a moment of any day of our lives when nature does not produce scene after scene, picture after picture, glory after glory, working still upon such exquisite and constant principles of the~ mest perfect beauty, that it is quite certain it is all done for us, intended for our perpetual pleasure by the Great Being who made all, all worlds.Early Marriages.All the young men and women—all the boys and girls—in the country, as a general proposition, expect to get married.If there are exceptions to the rule they are inconsiderable in number.pr&llus-vi tankaé-ymarriace.therafara food most deeply concerned relates to the expediency of early marriages.Whether they are expedient or not, is a question which cannot be solved by any rule applicable to all cases; but some of the principles on which the question may be determined can readily be laid down.The great mass of the people, in their youth, are, snd probably always will be, comparatively poor; that is to say, they are principally dependent on their own exertions for the means of livelihood.It is mainly for such persons, therefore, that any comprehensive view of the matter must be designed, if it is to possess any utility.The whole thing depends, mainly, on th: habits of the parties concerned in reference to economy and saving; and this remark applies witli quite as much emphasis to the wife as to the husband.It is very commen to hear the remark made of a young man that he is so industrious and so economical that he is sure to be thrifty and prosperous.And this may be very true of him so long as he remains single.But what will his habitual j rudence avail him against the careless waste and extravagance of an uncalculating, unthinking wife?He might as well be doomed to spend his strength and life in an attempt to catch water in u sieve.The effort would be hardly less certainly in vain.Habits of economy; the way to turn everything in household affairs to the best account ; these are among the things which every mother should teach to her daughters, Without this, those who are poor will never become rich, while those who are now rich may become poor, A competency is essential to happiness and to comfort.It is wise in a young man in selecting a wife not to be wholly indifferent to the consideration whether she has been brought up to save or to waste.À wise economy is much farther removed from meanness than that reckless extravagance which leaves nothing for one’s self or anybody else.The love and poetry of the honeymoon are seldom long preserved without something in the locker.Mothers should teach, and daughters should learn, domestic economy.They ought to insist upon this as of the greatest importance, Christians to the Disgrace of Christ, The fate of Christianity, itis not too much to sey, has been staked by God upon the conduct of those who profess it.He makes the establishment of His Kingdom of truth and righteousness, to depend upon all things upon what we are.And if Christians are not perceptibly in advance of other men; if all the gifts and graces which are theirs to enjoy do not lift them unmistakably into a higher region ; if their faith does uot supply purer aims and nobler principles than other men work by; ifas far as the world can see, it is all for nothing that theyare, as they profess to be, supernaturally endowed with the guidance of a Divine Spirit, then it is no marvel that scepticism should prevail, and that men shonld decline to weight themselves with the mysteries of a creed it scems no loss whatever to be without, We have to stand comparison nowadays with a Lew type of unbeliever, very different from that of former days.The socffer and blasphemer, it is true, are not extinct, and the Gospel has its coarse and unscrupulous assailants as of old.But the unbeliever of the latest type is rather one who ignores Christianity than one who attacks it.He claims to do his duty in life without the aid of the Christian's motives, and without the hope of the Christian’s reward.He claims to be as pure, as upright, as useful in public and in private as his Christian neighbor ; and can we deny that sometimes he makes goed his claim ?Above all, he claims to be at least as much in earnest about the social evil of the time, as eager to elevate and enlighten his fellow-men, and to put an end to the misery, the vice and the ignorance which degrade them.Nay, there is one school of unbelief which makes a bolder claim, and passing by Christian philanthropy as a weak and inadequate thing, converts the service of humanity into a religion.Now, brethren, if in this department of duty we are distanced by those who put from them the faith of Christ, I know not what remains to be said of us.Then are we what St.Augustine so solemnly calls those who belie the spirit of their Master: ¢Christiani ad contumeliam Christi, ’ ¢ Christians to the disgrace of Christ.’ Lat me name one work;in which itis our clear duty to take and keep the lead.I mean the werk of coping with the sensual sin which is rife through the length and breadth of our land, ruining the souls and bodies of men and women around us.Let it never be said that in this work the disciples of Christ compete on equal terms with the secular philanthropist ; that he is on a par with them in zeal, that he realizes the evil as they do not, and even makes sacrifices in order to cure it, of which they are incapable.lt is little to the credit of our Christianity that we should only now be awaking to see the ravages intem- themit.muanenco Les been maki Gospel of Christ asa regenerating power more than the supineness of Christian men in presence of this gigantic national sin, ff it be true that ¢they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its affections and Tusts, then I say that the Church of Christ is in essential idea a greal temperance so- eiely, founded and presided over by Him.The duty of attacking fleshly sin is its foremost duty, and it has a motive for self- conquest with which none other can com- Others may tell us of the deadly effects of intemperance on body and mind ; they may wam us of the misery and degradation it is certain to bring, Bat the Gospel bids us respect ourselves because we are ‘not our own,’ but are the property of one who in His great love has bought us, and made our bodies shrines for His presence by His indwelling spirit.What motive of self-interest can be conceived, so noble and so constraining ?If temperance is a duty which I owe to myself alone, then I am debtor and creditor in one ; no one can question my right to relax the obligation, or even to cancel it altogether, if I choose.If with my eyes open, and seeing what the end of the bargain must be, I elect to squander the happiness which is my birthright for a passing gratification, who shall complain, for who is wronged ?But if Tam bartering away what isnot mine but another’s, the health and the strength and the intellect claimed for the service of one to whom I am bound by every tie of gratitude and love, then 1 have a motive which can quench the fire within, if anything in the world can.Shame on us, Christians, if by the help of it we do no more than those who know it not.Shame on us if we do not guard others as well as ourselves, and scek to save from desecration the living temples in which God offers to dwell.—Canon Duck- worth.Who is the Coward?I have been taunted with the name of “coward.” A boy in the street asked me 10 take a cigar.Learn to smoke,” said he, ‘like the rest of us, and be a man.” 1 did not choose to do as he bid me.I said, “No.1 lave given wy promise that [ would never smoke a cigar, nor a pipe, porchew a quid of tobacco; and people are often praised for their fine social qualities merely because they are adepts in the art of saying pretty nothings by the hour, and exhibiting themselves in other people's drawing rooms in an entertaining way.And, on the other hand, those who are eminently social in nature and spirit are often condemned as unsocial because they say little, and do not care to exhibit themselves and turn their hearts inside out for other peop'e to admire.They may not be particularly brilliant or talkative— perhaps have not the faculty of making themselves thoroughly agreeable.But behind their reticence, and beneath the disguise of modest and unattractive ways, are all the elements of the truest sociability, which it requires but the least penetration to discover and the fit occasion to bring out.Being sociable requires something more than ceaseless chattering and gadding about.It requires the culture and expression in all proper and helpful ways of those thoughts and sentiments which are unselfish, generous, sympathetic and human.Such sociability as this is worth having and cultivating, REMEDY FOR TROUBLE.—Work is your true remedy.If misfortune hits you hard, you hit something else hard ;
