ays Trickett has proved himself s man pos séssed of wonderful mu-cular power and eat endurance ; qualities which have carried im safely through many a brave fight ; bat this morning he met with another colonist who showed some physical strength and at the same time tolerabis steying powers. The man who led Trickett to his Waterloo and showed himselfto be the greatest oaramsa in the world and hero of aqvatics wasa true son of {Capada— Edward Harlan. The Whig says no Iecant event seemed to proveso gene rally interesting asthe Hanlan.Trickett race which took place to-day, and there could not be greater jubilation than followed tho an.nouneement that the little Canadian had vanquished the muscular Trickett and won the title of champien of the world —a fitting climax to a career so for the proud issue of to-day’s contest, THE BETTING IN XEW YORK.New YoBk, November 15.— Pools on the Hanlan-Trickett race showed remarkable evenness up to the close of the betting; in 28th street and Barclay street on Saturday night, end this morning, just before the an- nouncément of the result, stood at | about 100 to 80 en Hanlan. On Tuesday, whan the pools were opened, Hanlan was far vorite at 2 to 1, but on the announcement of the arrival in London of half a“ million of dollars from Australia to back Tiickett, the betting Licre turned, aud wagers were made about even. This was on Friday, when, ca Saturday $20,000 was sent from Toronto to tack Harlan, and this turned the tide in his favor, Tuis position he maintained in the pools in London aud New York until the de claration ofthe race. All betting men agree .that there never was a beat race where ze much money changed hands in this city. One Australian alone boldy bets to the amount of $30,060, and himself backed Trickett to a large acount.A few weeks ago two Eng lishmen arrived representing the agent who agcompanied Trickett from Australia to Lom don, with instructions to bet in this city $50,000, He left $35,000 in Mr.Lovells hands, and the rest went up to Pittsburg, Philadelphia and Mon One broker in Brooklyn helds for settlement to-day bets in favor of Trickett. To show the closeness of bets in French mutuals, it may be stated that a 85 ticket on Hanlan realized $920, and a $2 ticket realized $377.Private bets, the extent of which can only be guessed at, reach a very large amount.Altogether, at the very lowest estimate, they will reach a quarter of a milliong snd some authorities declare that the bets will exceed a million ollars.OPINION OF THE ENGLISH PRESS.Lonnow, November 16.—All the news papers this morning consider Hanlan's vic tory as a triumph of skill over strength, and praise his grace and sprightliness.Hanlan eclares that he will participate in the International race uuless he is ill.The entire prema concedes that a more fair and easily won victory was never before witnessed, and the result proves that Hanlan is ths greatest rower of the age, and that he is fairly entitled to the clampionship of the world.Immediately after race odds of b to 4 were laid on Ross vs.Trickett.CONGRATULATIONS.Lonnoy, November 16.—Hanlan has been inundated with congratulatory telegrams.Among them are despatches from the Mir.quis of Lorne, the Mayor of Toronto, Col.Shaw, American Consul at Manchester, Gen Packard, American Consul-General at Liver.poo), and many Canadians. The poople of Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne sat up until the result of the race reached Australia, which was midnight with the Antipodeans, and were much disappointed, and lost heavily,.as they thought Trickett certain to win.WHAT TER *‘SPOBTBMAN" SAYS.The Landon Sportsman thus explains Trickett’s defeat :—¢* We believe firstly that Hanlen is far superior as a sculler to Trickett, and secondly, we do not think Trickett was as well as could be hoped. Some weeks ago when he made the trip to the Isle of Wig and France he was over-trained.He had worked himself tos pitch of muszular tension whieh nature refused to sustain long, and relaxstion ensued.Probably he was i suffering one of those relapses yesterday. It | must also be remembered Trickett was suf-r.| ing from all waiting for their turn. Some were provided with camp stools and ulsters for the comfort of the outer man.Nor was the inner man neglected, ns tbe pockets of the ulsters testified. The first man on the line was offered 50o for his plac, and complacently refused it.He felt so happy in the strength of his financial position that he hired a boy to keep his place in the Jine and went across the atreet to drive a bargain with a man in a cigar store. When he returned he found the boy had sold out the position for $5 and had sloped with the money. An wher from one of the theatres saw what was going on, took a place in the line, and was able to sell out for $10, in tims to attend to his evening's work, Most of the men who remained in the line over night were bent on cornering the ‘seat market.” Tbe result of the day’s sale of seats was $38,000.\\- Binosse of Montreal A meeting of the Executive Ootamittes of the Diocesan Synod wae held in tha Synod office last week, the Bishop presiding. There were also present cons y and Lonsdell, Canons.Anderson, Baldwin, Filegood and Norman, Rev J Paltds, GC Eobinson, R Linday, De.Sul- than, WL Mi, Chanoslloe Bs- -thume, L H Davidson, R Evans, C Gasth, C Gibb, E P Hannaford, J Hutton, H L containing a repetition of the ac-usïñon ) Robinson, T Simpson, W B Simpsos, N°5 Whit: ey and Dr A Johnson. After routine, the Treasurer's qu ® rtorly statement te 31st Uctoler was read y the Secretary. The current arconnt of the Widows’ and Orphans’ Fund showed © bslarce in hard of $1,231 60 ; not one flower was injured, and at the end of the season the bed remained al- Iu0oL 88 perfect as when the flowers were planted, thus paying a tribute to the good taste of the citizens at large and a proof that boys and girls way romp and even older people omy behave boisterously and yet have sense eneovgh to spare what pleases thousands as they pess along.Itisn little incident it is true, but it is not without its less mn.GABDENER.‘Tue Eplzootio, Tu the Editor of Tux Stak: S1R,—The epizootic is upon us and we up pear to take it a» a matter of course, e have all evidently made up our minds that we ust grin and bear it.Science fulds its urms While diseuse plays havoc with our horsea ! This ts not as it should be, Science should fight and not accept defeat. The epizootic 18 only a distemper in horses, the sume as the foot and mouth dissase is a distemper tu horned cattle, The one has been wore or leas successfully treated, and there isno reason why the other should not be more or less snccessfully treated too.1 wa in Ireland: over furty years ago, and I re wember the ravages made by the horse dis tewyper of thut day.But the Dublin Vets, fought the disease, quaruntined the afllicted horses, fed them on well known food, and kept their brds thoreughly clean and dry. They left little chance for unwholssoine gases to generate, and between the thorough ventilation of the stables, the cleanliness of the beds, and the groumiog of the borzes, very little time was left for the gases that were necessarily formed to do harm.A weak so'ution of carbonic acid was then in jocted into the nostrils, the bowels were occagionslly moved and a diarelic was administered. And what was the result 7 Why the distemper was eradicated, aud it has rot, so far es | am aware, over appeared since.| do mot pretend to say that the same wha is called the epizootic, but-1 certainly think that the people should not fold their arms and accept defeat when it iy only an attack that ia made and one which science and eutrgy :Lould be able to repal.EvtzooTie.The Irish Land Question. To the Editor of TE STAR : SIB,—Iu your issus of Thursday, you gave ling piece oi information that there was an Irish landlord in their midst, I hope the gentleman has not left town, and that he will give the Irish peopie of this city aa op portunity of Buycotting him.He says he is one of the *- old stock.” Well, so he may be, and withal his love of feudalism, be no better for that same. Some of the ¢ old stock ”’ were good and no mistake, but until we get this gontleman’s name, I, for one, place no more 1clisncs on his statements than a lamb should place on the essumed bleating of a wolf in sheep's clothing. If he is an ‘‘ Irish laudlord,"" I have been an Irish tenant, apd if he knows where the shoe pinched him, I know where it pinched me and left its sear behind it too.Let me give you a plain statement of facts. In the year 1821, my father rented a farm from Lord Avonmore and Browns, tho father of the present *‘ noblemau” of that names. To be sure we were unlucky in our landlord, but then he was ous of the * old 8 ock,’’ which this Irish landlord praiso:, and the majority of whom, he appears to think, treated their tenants with ¢ consideration.” Oh, yes, we were treat.d vith consideration,” as 1 will very soon prove to you. When we rented the land, we had abomt fourteen acres of what is called ¢ out away Log" on it, that isa place from which the turf has been eut, and which was valuoless for all agricultural or grazing purposes. In fact we paid nothing for it, for it was useless, Well, sir, my fathor aud my unclos over, and they agreed to attempt to reclaim the beg, although they knew that as soon as they succeeded ‘‘tho master” would raise the rent and make us pay for the bog just the game as if we never put a spsde to it.Well, we filled up the bog holes, levelled the place and carried subsoil on our 3acks for two miles, and after three years’ hard work, we were able to produce what are known as poistoes’” and poor oats out of the result of our labors.Another rear went by when one day the * agent” came along ard said tomy father ¢ Thomas” said he, *¢ you have made a good job of that piece of cut away bog.” ¢¢ I have that same, your honor,” replied my father, * but ithas been hard work, levelling the bog, filii up the holes and drawing the sub-soil an even now the crop it raises is only fit for the pigs.” ‘I use,” said the ageut aud away he went.Nothing more was heard of the piece of bog until the next ‘“ galo” day that he would be obliged to pay 15s an acre for the bog Le had reclaimed. Then all the labor spent on improving the land went to-berefit the landlord, and there was no help fcr us in those days but pay the in- creascd rent or give up our holding. We thought it hard, but wo bent our heads aud invoked a—I shall not say what—on the bead of one of the ‘old stock” who treated us with somuch ‘‘ contideration.” Shortly afterwerds F left home and this was my first and lest actual experience of Irish land.lordisie.AN IRIsH TENANT's SON.Irefand and Lord Lucan. To the Editor of THE STAR: À lSiP,—In your impression of the 8th inst., a coriespondent ** D” sreaks in very disparaging terms of one of Ireland's patriotic coblimen.I know nothin ersonally, of the Earl of Lucan ; but I do know, indirectly, sufficient to be assured that your core: pondent is very much mistaken in his lordabip'e character. For some years prior to 1836, T know a gentlemad who was ex-.{ tensively engaged in Ireland as a civil en- ineer, and who executed many works for crd Lucan. On leaving Irclaud this gen- tlemsn came to the neighborhood of Ripon in Yoiksire (where I then lived) snd built him lf 8 handsome residence there, which, in henor ofhis frish patroz, he call -d Lu:an House, s name ho hardly would have adopt ed bed Lord Lucam at that time been the’ sort of perron your correspondent reprogcnts’ him to have been.Moresver, this gentleman always spsks in the teras of the great and enduring good which his tordship did, not only by employing a great number of people, but by providing for hia dependents and healthy dwell ings, plans of which were published in seve.rafol the sgricultural journals with appeov.ing comments.Awd, if my memory serves me correctly, the rjectmnts your correspondent refirs to were at the time slated to be for the pase dof ve their blige many of the cotters to old ovela for clean sad wholesome ootb ges It wes ‘well known in thoss days, as it I» treatment would do for | the people of Montreal the somewhat start- | and the family tulked the matter over and | came around when my father received notice | now, that other large Irish laudowner:— n tally Load Fitzwilliam —had great ditt culty in getting the peasantry to exchange their o'd habirs for more civilizing habia tiors. The experience of many years past hes shown conclusively that large far:us avstenatically cultivated, with ample capital, yield a much larger acreable produ.- tion than is ordinarily obtained from smaller holdings. This fact bas been made practi :- ally available both in Scotland and in England, and it was ne doubt the conviction of its truthfulness that in the main induced Lord Lucan to cultivate the larger portion of his estate.| have repeatedly sern Lord Lucan referred to in agricultural periodica 4, as a benefactor to Ireland, aud as a libroal snd considerate employer, aud 1t seems to we, under all these circumstances, very unfair and illiberal to unjustly wssail bis character pew.As to any supposed offlunce he may have given, we kpow Low proverbiaily apt the average Irishman is to assume that rome one will tread on his cont tall.Are.gards the present tioublis 1 Ireland, they are but a furtier edilion of the chromic distempers wiih crop up periodically from nn erratic chub tior of temperament, and whi-l, when it taches fever heat, must be coded down by sliingent applications.Ireland is a standing Vlustrstion of the axiom that the inore given the more will be required—give an ivch aud take an ell.Ireland, 1 believe, pays no Income tax ; the has bad at least five million: sterling trom the public purse for drainage works; some large grants from the sawe source far education ; an Eucumbered Fitate Court to enable ber thriftless land-ownera to sell their estates, as well as many other concessions'to her clamorous appeals. The us- sumed grievances in Ireland, are, however, nothing compared with the real ones we ps tientJy endure in this Province. There suo law in Ireland by which mortgages can beex.puvged nolens volens ; there 18 no law in lre.land under which the costs of recovering commen debts cdn equal or exceed the debt itself, to the ruin of many au howest debtor ; and there is no law in Ireland which per- mite adult children to turn their aged parents out of house and home.As part of the United Kingdom, 1 believe, Ireland enjoys ber full share of the privileges aud blessings the is thus entitled to.Whether *¢ home rule” would add in any way to her comfort, «nd to her waterial prosperity and contant- ment, is more than doubtful.Looking at the matter tbrough provincial spectacles, and counting the cost by our own experience, We can Lardiy, with a clear cunscience, sympa: thize with her in Ler foolish desire to possess 1t, I Lave the honor to be, Yours, truiy, Joux M, CHARNOCK.Lennoxvitle, P.Q, November 11th, 1880.Tug Common Sense Nursing Bottle 1s now for sale, retail, by all Dmzgsts, and wholesale by Venning & Co, 240 St.James street. It is simple, convenient and easily cleaueed, and is, without doubt, tha hest sanitary improvement of the kind ever introduced.— Montreal (Gazelle, Fata VITALIZES AND ENIUCILES THE BLOOD, TONES UP THE BYSTEM, MAKFS THE WEAK STRONG, BUILDS UP THE BROKEN- DOWN, INVIGORATES THE BRAIN, AND CURES Dyspepsia, Nervous Affeciious, Gen- ernl Debility, Neuralgia, Fever and Ague, I’'oralysis, Chronio DPlarrbos, Botlls, Dropsy.Hamers, Female Comes piwnlots, Liver Com- plinlats, Remitient Fever, and ALL DISFASES ORIGINATING IN A BAD STATE OF THE BLOOD, OR ACCOMPANIED BY DFRILITY OR A LOW STATE OF THE SYSTEM.PERUVIAN SYRUP SUPPLIES THE BLOOD WITH ITS VITAL PRINCIPLE, OR LIFE KLEMENT—IRON,; over the different articles on the prevailing disease that is prevalent at the present time in this city and elsswhere, one cannot help being struck with the death rate and those that are supposed to bo dying. Now, my opinion is that it is not so prevalent, not #0 fntal, nor yet 50 severe as when it was here before. The symptows do not pieseut themselves in near such a severe tos as in the last outbreak.la the fist place tbe fever does not run so high. The discharge from the nostrils is not so excessive, nor yot so coptous or purulent is its nature, and the cough is not so distressing and the whole general appearance of tae animal dues not indicate such extreme weakness. The symptoms as they appear yield more easily to proper and judicious trest- ment and in 8 much shorter period, of course, There are horses which are badly housed, and still less poorly fed, and in some places hygienic principles are out of the ruestion. They bave not sufficient strength or constitution to five, whic showed a little inflamiatory action going on in the lungs, but under the circuwnstances are doing well, nor do I anticipate any s-rious results, nor have I had any that proved fatal, and the natural conclusion I come to is, it is not fatal. The treatment should be ver inom fees that m2d@ cating well, with ouly a slight cough, should work, for if they eat well thay ought to do some of the work of those that are really sick and caunot and therefore are unable to do any wok.For it beccmes a serious consideration with with those who have large contracts on band pot to be able to full tham.Mind I am net advocating the working of sick horees, I mean those who are feeding well and do not show any alarming symptoms, also the weather must be taken into consideration. If the weather
