the Wesleyan Methodist IIymu Book, and the Book of Discipline ; Dr.Stevens’ Centenary of American Methodism, the American Methodist Centenary Picture, aod the Lord's Prayer Picture ; the Minutes of the Canada Conference for 1866, and a copy of the Methodist Recorder containing a list of the stations of the Ministers of the British Conference for the currcot year; copies of the Watchman, Christian Guardian, Zion’s Herald, and the Guide- to aud Beauty of Holiness; a copy of the Stanstead Journal in which .is an account of the Rise and Progress of the Methodist Church in Stanstead Co., by B.F.Hubbard, and a copy of the Daily Witness of Oct.29th.There were but two coins, a five cents U.Sand a five cents Canada currency.— Tiere were two of the Childrens’ Centenary Medals, one bearing the likoess of Bishop Asbury and the other the likeucss of Wesley aod Asbury, with appropriate inscriptions, sent by the Masters Goodwin, of Boston.There were also Photographs of Mrs.Carlos Pierce and the members of the Trust Board; of the present and some of the former Mivisters of the Stanstead Circuit, and of Dr.Stinson, late President of the Cuunda Conference, of Albert Knight, Fsq., M, P.P.for Stanstead County, of the Royal Family of England, and of the late Pregident Lincolo, together with a duplicate of the Deed of the site donuted by Carlos Pierce, Esq.The Corner Stone, which is of Stan- stead Granite, bears the inscription,— “Wesleyan Methodist Centenary Church” in a circle, and on the hors.zoutal diameter of the circle, iu raised letters, the word ‘‘Ebenezer,” in acknowledgment of the “help of the Lord hitherto,” aud withia the lower are, the date, Oct.30, 1866,” while within the arc above is au open Bible.The programme of the ceremony, because of the rain, bad to be almost wholly abagdoned.The 737th Hymo was selected to be sung, the 2nd chap.of Ephesians to be read, and then after the laying of the stone, addresses to be del vered by the Rev.Messrs.Borland, 1 CE CE Pre LE -" sm VOLUME 21—NUMBER 61, ; .Tomkins and Carroll.The Rev.Geo.Douglas of Montreal, and Gov.Dil.lingham of Vt., had to decline invitations to be present, the former because of late illness, and the latter because of legislative duties.at Moutpelier.— About 8 1-2 o'clock, the Rev, John Carroll of Guelph, C.W., offered an appropriate prayer, after which Carlos Pierce, Esq.presented the deed of the acre of land fur the new church site, accompanied with a written address to the Rev.W.R.Parker, Superiutend- eut of the Circuit, who represented the Board of Trustees, and who claimed the privilege of giving in writing his reply to Mr.Pierce's address—both of which will be found below.Then Mrs.Carlos Pierce, fox whom the Trustees had ordered a beautiful silver trowel bearing an appropriate inscription, together with a mallet, both of which have been since presented, drew a trowel along the joint of the stone, and having struck it three times with a mallet, said,—*‘‘’This Corner Stone of the Wesleyan Methedist Centenary Church 1 declare duly laid in the name,of the ever blessed Trinity, Father,’ Son and Holy Ghost.Amen!” Then the Rev.Mr.Tompkins pronounced the Bevedic- tion, and the spectators quickly sought a friendly shelter.The Stanstead Cornet Band had very kindly come out in the raiu to reuder their services gratuitously, but the “will had to be taken for the deed.” A purpose of repairivg to the Church for the “Corner Stoue addresses,” had also to be abandoned, an adjournment having been announced till the evening meeting.(Remarks of Mr.Pierce on presenting ihe Deed of land for new Cenlenury Wesleyan Methodist Church.) Rev.W, R.Parker, Chairman of the Board of Trustees : Jr.Chairman, — It is about four years since I was prompted to make the proposition for a new church which you have this day met formally to accept.When first I proposed it to a few friends, it was thought both impracticable aud impossible.I was even discouraged from further agitating the subject that year, so that my first conceived plan or proposition, to build the church and give it a8 a free offering, for the acceptance of the people of the church of my choice iu my native place, was abandoned, and the one you have now accepted was made a little more than two years since; which was to give one-half the sum required to build such a church as would be satisfactory to the people, stipulating only that it should be built of stone instead of wood, and that it should not be occupied for worship uutil free from debt.These conditions were accepted unanimously, and after several meetings of the church, a liberal subscription of about six thousand dollars was readily obtained, your building commitlee were appointed and work commenced at once.The delay occasioned by not having secured the lot anticipated, will I trust, prove a blessing instead of a misfortune, Every effort was made by the committee to secure the location anticipated, but without success.The one upon which we are now assembled, was solicited by the unauim- ous vote of your committee, aud other prominent friends of the enterprise.— Its proximity to the parsonage, its central position accommodating the two villages, the size of the lot and viher cousideratious, together with the almost unanimous request of the subscribers as obtained by our former highly esteemed pastor, Mr, Tomkins, had decided your committee to purchase this lot.This brief history of the euter- prize brings me to the pieasing and houorable duty which I have heen assigned to perfurm, in conuection with the interesting ceremonies about to take place, of presenting through you, Mr.Chairman, to tbe Board of Trustees of the Wesleyan Methodist Centenary Church of Stanstead, this deed of the acre of land upon which the new church is to be erected.ln view of the unanimity of the request for this location, I esteem it an honor, a privilege, and a great satisfaction, to have the ability to donate it for such a purpose, on such an interesting occasion as the one we celebrate—the centenary of Methodism on this continent.Aud here, sir, we open a wide field for reflection and congratulation, as we contemplate what our church has been the blessed instrument of doing for the salvation of the world.But it is pot my privilege to enter into the discus- sion of this theme.Fortunately, we are favored on this occasion with many able and valiant soldiers of the Cross, who know full well how to make this a deeply interesting and profitable season to us all, : In conclusion, sir, and in behalf of the committes, I would.simply add, that it is their wish to go forward as rapidly as possible with the work we bave this day commenced, but to remind you that they are only your ser- vauts, and can ocly proceed as you furnish the “ways and means.” May we all open our hearts aud purses and give liberally and cheerfully on this hundredth anniversary, which we are 80 highly favored to enjoy.May we all remember that the gold and the silver belong to the Lord.We are only his stewards, and as we are entrusted with its keeping and using, so must be our accountability in the last great day.1 beg the privilege of laying the firat offering upon the coruer stoue—a deed of this land.May we soon see erected on this site, an edifice worthy of the enlightened age in which wo live, and worthy to commemorate the first ceute- vary of Methodism ; and may its cou- gregation be a united, happy and loving people, such as the Methodists ever have been, ever ready to counsel, help, and sympathize with each other throngh the journey of life to the Paradise n- bove.Reply of the Rev.W.RB.Parker to the Donation Address of C.Pierce, Esg : Mr DEAR Srr,—To be present at the gathering of to-day, and to participate in the ceremonies of this occasion, afford me a proud pleasure and the profoundest gratification.If when distant one hundred miles and occupying another field of labor, I was gladdened by the report of your liberal devising, how much more now, when stationed here bebolding this fruit of your generous purposes, and, iu the Corner Stone about to be laid by your excel lent wife, the ‘’beginning of the end,” how much more abundant my joy ! But I may not further speak for myself.I em deputed by the Board of Trustees of the Wesleyan Methodist Centeuary Church of Stanstead, to declare their acceptance of the deed of this acre of land, which you have so handsomely donated as a site for the contemplated church.Avd now, sir, allow me, in their names, to tender you their cordial and hearty thanks for this valuable and valued gift.By the possession of this property “the location”— the open question of two years—is fi- ually settled ; and the pain of suspense, shared by them, because of the apparent impracticability and impossibility to which you refer, has been wholly removed.They are now, moreover, prepared to prosecute the work, this day formally inaugurated, in the purchase of material and the erection of the building.They feel justified in speaking of preparedness, not only because of the commendable readiness with which the community has supplemented your liberal offer of your thousands with a like sum, but also because you offered the opportunity of procuring the granite from the quarry on your property so Providentially discovered, and because that, on the principle involved in the old adage, ‘a peuny saved,is a peuny earned,” this site, compared with the old ove, puts them at the outset, ina position financially better by $2,500.Thus, theu, they congratulate themselves, that with the blessing of the Lord, they shall be able twelve months hence, to meet the conditions of the stipulation, worthy of universal approval and adoption, that the Church shall “not be occupied for worship until free from debt.” I would also thank you, Sir, in the name of the community, for this acre of land, Tam aware it may be asserted: “You are uot authorized to speak for us.” Well, though not formally invested with authority by you, still let me speak.Some two years since, by popular vote, you elected a “Building Committee” from among yourselves, and by a formal resolution clothed them with power to select a site for the new church.After the failure of every effort to secure another site, this committee in the legitimate exercise of the power yon confided to them, unanimously decided upon this site.Now, as ‘actions speak louder than words,” this, your action, cajls loudly on me to speak in your behalf, as does your ratification of your old Ct ! subscriptions, since the action lobating the church has been made public.But I mpst not abuse my liberty.I would simply say in behalf of a gratifisd’public, that, while you “Esteemod it au honor, a privilego, and a groat satisfaction to have the ability to donate it for such & purpose,” thoy adinire the spirit which actuates you in benefiting your “native place” through the “ability” acquired in another land.There ere two features of excellence in this site, mentioned in your sddress, which will ultimately, if they do not now, comwend it'to all: ‘Its central position, accom- modatiog the two villages, Rock Island and Stanstead Plain, and the size of the lot.” We fully sympathize with nny whose growing infirmities cause them to fear the distance will prevent their regular attendance upon the services of the new sanctuary ; and with those al- 80, whose preference is for the old site with its ballowed associations.Yet we thiuk too well of these not to eredit them with dogree of nuselfishness sufficiently groat to sacrifice personal coyvenieuces and preference for the general good.Theu, that the “size of the lot” i» an exceeding pdvantage must be admitted even on sanitary considerations.Generally the * Lecture Room,” used for Suu- day School and week evening services, aud the “Vestries,” in which the members of the church woekly join in Class Meeting, are situated in an underground or basement story, where the juvigor- ating light is excluded and the damp atmoephere is courted to generate dis- case, both in children and adults.This ean and will be remedied on this benu- tiful and commodious site by a building constituting an adjunet of the church proper, and to be subdivided for ihe purposes above named.Aud now, sir, with another reference, forbearing further to enlarge, I must couclude.The land, the deed of which [ wow hold, with all its future appurle- nances becomes the property of the Canada Confereuce of the Wesleyan Methodist Chureh, which, together with the excellent Parsonage immediately adjoining, with its acre aud a hall of land, will constitute one of the most beautiful and valuable church properties in our whole connexion.Well may your praise be in ull the churches.May the Head of the Church, our Lord Jesus Christ, who recognizes au act done for the Church Himself, and who is well pleased with 4 Sanctuary commensurate with the position and circumstances of a people, graut you long life, and gladden your heart by giving you to witness, that on this 11il} of Zion, beautiful for situation, in {ull view of the far famed Lake and Mouutain scenery, that “Shower shall come down in lis season; yen, even showers of blessings.” as done to The Ceutenary Meeting was held in the Methodist Church, commencing at 6 o'clock, when I.Smith, Esq., vecu- pied the chair, Rev.Dr.Selley offered prayer and addresses were delivered by the Rev.Messrs.Borlaud, Saudersou, Tomkins and Carroll.The Rev.Mr.Borland gave the *Corner Stone” address.After some reminiscences of this cireuit on which he had been twice stationed, he stated several of the reasous for the erecting in communities of suitable churches; he defended Methodism charge of clannishiness, showing that their adhesion was only such us might cinracterize any denomination, and he obligation of Churches to against the cited the Methodist gnaraniess for purity of doctrine, ex- enfoice the cluding all approach to “Rationalism” al Ritoalisin.” Mr.Sanderson reminded the audience that this was not actually the Centenary of Cauraulian Methodism, which would not be 111 1591; and Mr.Tous- kins claimed for Newfoundinad the palm of the introduction of Methodism one year before New York; but bath of these gentlemen joined fraternally in the celebration of the Centenary of Americas Methodism, while Mr.Carroll was very happy in the recital of the past triumphs and in portraying the coming glories of Methodism.A handsome sum was promised as a a first instalment to the ““Connexional- objects” of the Cevtevary Fund.When ! we consider that the local church effort isa Centenary offeriog, so much as otherwise cannot be expecied.As the result of the meeting about $80,00 has been realized as “Corner Stone” offerings, besides which, in ad- Trustees of THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1866.dition to all his former givings, Mr.Carlos Plorco offared an Organ in memory of his’ late brothèr, Mr.George Pierce ; and Mri.Carlos Plerce a Boll aud Clock for the new church, in memory of her lato father, Mr.Wilder Pierce, F3 Some question haviug arisca in regard to the introduction of School Books in the Stanstead Scheol Muaici- pality, the Secretary-Treasurer was instructed to correspond with the Super- intendant.TTis reply we give below : EbuUCATION OFFICE, Montreal, Sept, 25, 1866.Mr.D.A.Mansur, Secretary-Treasurer to School Gommissioncrs, Municipality of Stanstead, County of Stanstead : Sin,—In reply to your euquiries 1 Leg to ntato that although the 1st July ucx! has been fixed us the time from sud after which the books approved by the Council of Public Instruction shall have to be used in the public schools to the exclusion of all others, it does not follow that they may not be used before that time.On the contrary, it is the desire of the Council that they be introduced into all the schools as speedily us possible.The delay accorded ouly extends to the Ist July, 1867.After that time, the approved books alone shall be allowed, aud the grant withheld from all school corporations allowing the nse of other books.In the mean lime, thoy have, however, à perfect right to compel the use of books approved by tho Council in each Municipality, aod it is desirable that they should do so.I have the honor to bo Sw, Your obedicut servant, J.IO.Cuavveav, Supt.of Education.A SENSIBLE VIEW OFTIIE MATTER The Philadelphia /nguirer hus had some sensible articles on the subject of of the Fonian prisouers, which do credit to bis honesty and good sense.The latest is from that paper of Lucsday, as follows : ‘The people of this country will very geuerally coucur with the propriety of the request presented by Secretary Seward to Sir Frederick W.Bruce, tho British Mivister at Washington, that the Fenian prisoners receutly sentenced to death at ‘Toronto shall be pardoned for their offences.We believe that both of these men are American citizens, ‘nud representations made iu their behalf in order to procure their release aro humane and proper.But we do not think (hat the menace conveyed in the intimation that the United States will examine into the circumstances of the trinls and couvietions is in good taste.tis an imputation upon the conduct of the Canadians which is very offensive, and which will probably be repelled with indignation.“The candid and thinking people of this country will not agree with Mr.Seward that the crimes of these men are emivetly political.If they had boun Canadians, disputing some public question with Canadinns, there would have beeu some ground for tue assertion.— But being citizens of the United States, they had no political controveray with the Canadians.IT they were wnnatur- alized Irishmen, burning with feclings of indignation against Great Britain, upon ueeonot of Irish wrongs, they could not affect their objects by invasion of Canada, Cannda has no part io the government of Ireland.If the case had heen reversed, and ove or two parties quarreling in Caouda had invaded the United Sintes, wasted our ficlds and killed our young men, no sort of’ sophistry on the part of Sir Frederick W.Bruce conld ever bave induced Mr.Seward to admit that the offence was political.During the rebellion there were raids pou American ecil from Canada by parties acting in the interests of the rebellion, and yet Mr.Seward denied that such acts were political.John Gates Beall was hanged at York, on the 18th of February.1865, for the seizure of the Philo Lursous aud Island Belle, ou Lake Erie, and nt- tempting to overturn a train on (he Luke Shore ruilrowd.These acts were arranged in Cauda and executed on onr soil.Beall argued at they were eminently political, but the United States would not “au any such nonsense ant the man was hanged, as would hitve been the St.Albans’ raid- era had they been caught.It is folly with these precedents to aver that the Fenian invasion of Canada was political.It was not.It was a gross nct of folly and of crime, and if the United States cannot procure the discharge of the prisouers, by pleading for pity on their weakoess aud want of common sense they should assume no other position,” ete es A.Warp ox TRAITORS.—Artemus Ward is his letter to Punch describing a visit to the Tower of Loudon, las this to say on traitors: A warden took us in charge, and showed us the “Traiter’s Gate,” the , armers and things.The Truter’s Gute .is wide ennuff to admit {about twenty “ traters abrest, I shoold jedge ; but the proof was before them.The fifty fraucs were paid and the prisoner sent back to the galloys.— But after he was gone, the father nsked & private interview with the mayor to whom he told the story.‘The mayor was so much affected that he not only added fifty francs more to the father's purse, but wrote immediately tv the Minister of Justice, begging the noble young prisoner's release.‘Tie Minister examined into the affair, and, finding that it was a comparatively small offeuce which had condemned the young man to the galleys, and that he had already served out half his time, ordered lus release.Is not the whole incideut beautiful ?Cae Se NEW WAY OF PAYING SUBACRIP- TIONN.The following is an amusing account of the way « farmer was taught how cheaply he could take tho paper.The many “we wot of.” **You have hens at home, of course.Well, I will send you my paper for onc year, for the product of a single hen for one season ;
