The mude adopted in 1860 wus to classify the inhabitants according to their preferences.This, ’so fur ns Roman Catholics are concerned, is not so inconsistant as it is when applied to other denominations.Fer Roman Catholic parents have their children baptized, and consequently in a certain sense they are church members, Yet they ure not considered members in full, until they arrive at a certain age.But as it vespects persons classified as belonging to other churches, who ave not netual church members, the case is quite different.For two-thirds of them have never been baptized by the church under which they ave classified, nor by any other church ; and whut makes the matter still worse, hey have no religion, | according to the correct signification of the term.Lexieographers define religion ns ‘‘a system of faith and worship.” And this is in accord with scripture which says, “Faith without works is dead.”— A man may have an indefinate theoretical faith which produces no effect on his nctions,-and yet he has no religion.For religion is fuith and worship.Not Jaith nor worship, but the two conjoined ; and worship, adoration, reverence, love, constitute the only evidence that faith oxists, Hence if a person has not some well defined belief or faith that causes him te act accordingly, he should be put down under the head of “No Religion ;” and actual church members should Lo.put down under the rospce- tive churches to which they belong.In this way the Census when completed would show the nctunl strength of the different churehes, and the number who profess no religion.If the Government wished to ascertain the strength of the Protestants, Catholics and Pagans, it might answor vory well to classify the inhabitants nocording to their proferen.Cas.The inhnbitants nre required, by Inw to nuswer such questions as tho Enu- meratoré put them, nnd to fill up the achedules left at each domieil, correctly, undor n penalty of not less Chan ten dol lara nor more than forty dullnrs, Dut if they follow tite Instrnotions of the Census Commissioners, they will not comply with thd letter of the’ law, Commissioners may be blameless in this matter, becanse they may have been so instructed.But this does not make it any more correct.To illustrate, suppose the Enumerator goes to the demi- cil of Mr.A.and finds (what he will find in nine cases out of ten) ‘that the schedules left ure not filled up according to the design.The Enumerator commences to doso.Mr.A.are you married?No.But I prefer to be married.Any deaths in your family du- ving the last twelve months 7 No.But it is my preference that old Peter, sitting in the corner there, whom I have worked hard, for the Inst five years to muintain, should have died.How many oxen have you?Not any.But I prefer to have twenty.Whatis your occupation ?I have none.But my preference is that of a Preacher.‘What is your Religion?I have none.Well you must classify yourself under some head.What shall I call it?Wellif 1 must ; I think Universalist would fit my case as well as any, it being the nearest to no belief ut all of any I know of.Now who does not see that statistics gathered in this way are not worth the paper they are written upon.A thing either is, or isnot.Mr.À.is « Univer- salist, or be is not.If he is not, they should put him down-as speh ?If à man puts himself down as a Methodist when be is not ; he returns à false answer, aud ought to be fined.If the Government seek no more definite, reliuble and useful information than this, Letter not spend time and money to obtain it at all.À man is either a Baptist or he is not.He is a chemist or he is not.He a blacksmith or be is not.So with the different systems of religion.Each contains some definite principles that distinguish it from all others.And a man is either one thing or the other.There is no half way work.I throw these thoughts out to excite thonght in others.I have another prominent thought on this subject, but I will not utter it now.N.2.The Strife Over Ginx's Baby.From that curious satire on English society in its relation to the poor, called “Ginx’s Baby,” we mako an extract describing what happened after the Roman Catholic “Sisters of Misery” had concluded to surrender the baby, which they had accepted Troi the father when he was seeking to drown it: A mass-meeting of Protestants «had heen summoned for three o'clock on the day designated in the letter of the Papist attorneys, to be held in the Philo- pragmon Hull.That was the favorite center of countless movements, both well-meant and well-executed, and of others ag [utile ns they weve foolish.Yet one could not say that a larger proportion of the latter were connected with the Hull than existed in as many other biuman enterprises of any sort, The concession of the Romanists at tirst dashed tho managers of the demonstra tion.Still there remained topics for a meeting: they would rejoice over vietory, and consult about the future of tho Protos tant Baby.Their grievance was gone.The Secretary was an old haud at these meetings.He planned to import into this onc & sensation, Ginx's Bahy, brought from the convent, stripped of his pnpal swathings and enveloped in a hundsome outfit presentod by an ami: able Protestunt Duchess, was placed in un cradle with his bead vesting on an Bible.I am afraid he was quite ns uncomfortable as he had ever been at the When, nt the conclusion of the chairman’s speech, in which he informed the audience of their trinmph, this exhibition was deftly introduced upon the platform, the huzzas, and clappings, and waving of handkerchiefs were.such as even that place had never seen, The child was astouaded into quietness.Myr.Trumpeter took the chnir—be- liaved by many to be, next to the Queen, the most powerful defender of the faith in the three kingdoms.I never.could understand why the newspapers voport- ed his speeches—I cannot.When he lind done, Lord Evergood, “a popular practien]l peor, of sound Protestant principles,” as the Daily Bander alliterntively termed him next morning, rose to move.the first resolution, nlrendy cut and dried by the com- mittee— “That the infant so happily resened from tho incubus of a delusive superstition, should be remitted to the care of the Church Widows’ and Qrphans’ Augmentation Society, and should be sup ported by voluntary contributions.” Before Lord Evergood could say a word murmurs avose in’ every’ part of the lull.He wus-n mild, gentlemanly Christian, withont guile, and the opposition Loth suprised and frightened him, Ho uttered n few sentonces in approval n of hin proposition and sat down.An individual in the gallery shouted —#Sir | T rine to move an amendment I" Cheers, and ovied of “Order ! ordac ! 8it down I" die.Tho Chuirman, with great blandness, aiid 1 "Tho gentleman fs“ont of ‘dors couvent, toils of a kindred superstition.oh, hisses end cheers.) I withdraw the expression ; I did not inean to be offen- ed.Icallupon the Rev.Mr.Valpy to second the resolution.” Mr.Valpy, incumbent of St.Swith- in’swithin, insisted on speaking, hut what he suid was known only to himself.When he had finished there was un extraordinary commotion.On the platform many ministers and laymen jumped to their fest; in the ball at least a hundred aspirants for a hearing raised themselves on benches or the convenient backs of friends.The Chairman shouted “Order ! or- DER, gentlemen ! This is a great occasion ; let us show unanimity 1” There seemed to be a unanimous desire to speak, Amid cheers, cries for order, and Kentish fire, you could hear the Rev.Mark Slowboy, Independent, the Rev.Hugh Quickly, Wesleyan, tho Rev.Bereciah Calvin, Presbyterian, the Rev Ezekiel Cutwater, Baptist, calling to the chair, A Jull ensued, of which advantage was taken by Mr, Stentor, a well-known Hyde Park orator, who bellowed frow u friend's shoulders in the pit, “Mr.Chairman, hear me!” an appeal that wag followed by roars of laughter.What was the matter?Why, the proposal to hand over the baby to an Anglican refuge stirred up the blood of every Dissenter present.It was lifting the infant out of the frying-pan and dexterously dropping him into the fire.But the chairman was accustomed to these scencas, He staved the tumult by proposing that a representative fr ont each denomination should give bis opinion to the audience.“Whom would they have first ?” The loudest cries were for Mr.Cut- water, who stood forth—a weak, stooping, half-halting, little man, with a limp necktie, and trousers pufty at the knees —but with honest use of them, let the say.It is quite credible that if Dr.Watts’ assertion be true that— ‘Satan trembles when he sees, The weakest saint upon his knees,” that areh enemy was unusually perturb- od when Ezckiel Cutwater was upon his.On these he had borne manly contests with evil.Two things—yea, three—were vigid in Ezekiel's creed ; fire would never have burned them out of him , hatred of Popery, contempt of Anglicad priesteraft and apostolic sue- cession, and adhesion to the dogma of adult baptisim and total immersion.Whoso should not join with him in these let him be Anathema Maranatha.- His eye kindled as he looked at the seething audience.“Sir,” said he, “I beg to move an amendment to the motion of the noble lord.(Cbeers.) That motion proposes to transfer to the care of the Established Church this tender and unconscions infant (bending over Gihx's Laby), just snatched from the (OL, sive.(Hear,) This is & gran! representative meeting—not of the English Chureb, not of the Bupiist Church, not of the Wesleyan Church—but of Pro- testantisin.In such an assembly is it right to propose any singular disposition of a representative adopted child, not of one, but of all denominations.(Cheers and Kentish fire.) infant?This is now the (Cheers) Arsund bis, or her—I am not sure which—cheru- bic head circle the white-winged angels of various Churches, and on her or bim, whichever it may be—” The Chairman said that he might as well say that he had authentic information that it wus Aim.“Him then—concentrate the sympathies of every Protestant heart.Let us not despoil the oceasion of its great ness by exhibiting a narrow bigotry in one direction ! Let us bring into this infuntile focus the rays of Catholic unity.(Loud cheering and Kentish fire.) To me, for one, it would be eminently painful to think—what doubtless would oceur if the motion ia adopted—that within a week of his entrance ‘iuto the asylum of the society named in it, this diminutive and unknowing sinner should through the farce of n supposti tious admission into the Church ot Christ, (Ohl) Yes! I say a farce, whether you regard the age of the aco- Iyte ov the indifferent proportion of water with which it would be ‘performed, (1Tproar, oh, oh! and some cheering from the Baptist section.) “But I will uot now further enter into these things,” said Mr.Ontwater, who knew his cue perfectly well, “I can hold these opinions and still love my brethren of other denominations.I move,-ns an amendment, that a committee, consisting of one minister and one Inyman to bo, 50-.locted from each of the Churches, be.ap:.pointed to take charge of the physical.woll-being and mental and spiritual training of the infant.” By this proposition, which’ was received with enthusinsm, Ginx'e’ Baky' was to be incontinently pitched into aii arena of polemical warfare.Every one.was willing that n ‘votiittes should fight out the question vienrionsly ; and, therefore, whon Mr SlowLoy sccunded the amendment, it vas curried.vith loud neclamations, : 5 ‘But they ete Mot yot in this caso made and provided, The.the resolution’ has not: yo: bonn.nneé=* cura nou ound.| morbers of we oommitice; wood, Ou, brooding 45 0 = | and written” “about; advertised, or nd” ARS: rians and Quakers olaiined to be represented.The platform and the meeting “wore by the eurs again.It was fiercely contended that only Evangelical Christians could have a place ih such a work, and many of the nominees, declared that they would not sit on n committee with—well, some curions epithets were used.The Unitarinns and Quukers took their stund on the catholic principles embodied in the amendment, and on the fact that Ginx’s Baby had now “become national Protestunt property.” Mr.Cutwater and à few others, moved by the scandal of the dispute, interfered, und the committee was at length constituted to the sutistaction of all parties.It was to be called “The Branch Committee of the Protestant Detecteral Union for promoting the Physical and Spiritual Well-being of Ginx's Baby.” A fourth resolution was adopted.“That the subject should be treated in the Metropolitian pubpits on the next Subbath, and a collection taken up in the vavious churches for the’ Lonsfit of the infant.” This promised well for Master Ginx’s future.The meeting hud lasted five hours, and while they were discussing him the child grew hungry.In the tumult every one had forgotten the subject of it, and now it was over, they dispersed without thought of him.But he would not allow those near him, at all events, to overlook his presence, Some, forseeing that awkwardness was iw- pending, slipped away ;- while three ‘or four stayed to asl what was to be done with him.“Hand him over to the custody of the Chairman,” said a Mr.Dove.“I should be most happy,” seid he, smoothly, “but Mrs.Trumpeter is out of town.Could your dear wife take him, Mr.Dove?’ Mr.Dove's wife was otherwise engaged.: The Secretary was unmarried—cham- bers at Nincome's Inn.+ In the midst of their distress a woman who had been hanging about the ball near the platform, came forward and offered to tuke charge of him, “for the sake of the cause.” Every one was velieved, After her nume and address had been hastily noted, the Protestant baby was placed in her arms.My Lord Evorgood, the Chairman, the clergy; the Secretary, and the mob went home _rejoicing.Some hours after, Ginx%5-Hkby; étFpped of the duchess's beautiful robes was found by a policeman, lying on a doorstep in one of the marrow streets, not a hundred yards behind the Philopragmon.By an ironical chance he was wrapped in a copy of the largest daily paper in the world.At evory breakfast-table in town next mording the report of the great Protestant meeting was read, and a further report, in leaded type, of the discovery of Ginx's Baby at a later period of the evening hy a policeman.A pretty ‘comment on the proceedings ! The Guod Samaritan put his patient on his uss and camied him to an inn; while the priest and the Levite, though the luster looked at him, at least let him alone.To have called a public meet ing to discuss his fute before deserting | him, would have been a refinement of inhumanity.The committee were rather ashamed when they met, Instant measures were taken to recover the child and place him in good bands.The duchess again _provided Laby- clothes, The next Sunday sermons were preach: ed on his behalf in u score of chapels.The collections amounted to £800, a sum increased by donations and sub- seriptious to the handsome total of £1360 10s.34d.‘ It will be seen hereafter what the committee did with the baby, but I happen to have an account ef what became’ of the funds.They were spent as fol lows, according tp a balauce sheet never submitted: to the, subéeribere: ti 8e | 8: d Committee rooms, 00 2 Secretaries employed:by the » —-" Committee, + + 0: 1805:0 10 Agents, Canvassing, otc, $8 612 Printing.Notices, Plabards, : 24 Pamphlets, a “Daily Bu." + létin of Health,” hia RE + £ Ginx's Baby, » “Protestant Babyhood, Tale," “The Cradle of an, Infant Martyr,” “A Snatch ed Brand,” and other © Works issued by the ;
