und genorally, on a Sunday morning, Leila accompanied them, with the ayah, who scomed-to follow her like n shadow.In all pa.rochinl charity lists their, names np- peared, and the clergyman was inclined tv ascribe many an anonymous donation to their liberality ; and often on a wookday afternoon, their enrringe instoad of taking the directiun of the Park, would convoy them to the workhouse or tho hospital, whore thoy wore evor most welcomo, Of their personal appearance we havo hithorto said nothing.Miss Koith, who might have been about thirty when sho cume to live in our square, wus small and insignifioant looking ; but hor expression was mild and agroonble, and the tono of her voice plonsant, Miss Indiana, who must have been nearly ten years younger than hor sister, was tall and slight, and ber fonturos wero dolicato and beautiful; but her whole air and wanner was that of a person who had passed through a groat sorrow, and tho sallownoss of her complexion rath- or marred hor gonoral effect.Her vuico, more musical than her sistor's, wan mournful in its tono, exprossive of a sort of quiotwonrinosg, and very difforont from Annie's cheerful, rapid neconta ; and yot, dissimilar as they wero, tho closest affection united tho two.And now, instond of lofting our renders grope us wo did, in the dark, | we will; without further preamble, admit thom into tho secret of No.26, aud toll them the story as it was told us, nearly twonty yours ago.Anno and Indiana Keith wore the only ohildron of sir William Xoith, who occupied a high judicial appointment at Agra, and had spent tho greater part of his lifo in India.Soon after the birth of Indiana, Lady Keith $12 a day nt honie, Andis wanted, Outfitsand teruis froo TitUR™ & 00, Augusta, Malue was ordored to return to England for the sake of hor health, and her two children went with hor; and when in a couple of yours, sho died thoy ro mained there with their grandmother, till her denth doprived them of their homo, und they went out to join theit futher in India.At that time Indiuna wus sevonteen yoars of age, und her beauty struck and delighted all the Roglish.residents of the city.Hor rich coloring was a positivo feast Lo the “| eyo, after the sallow cheeks of the Agra ladies, and only enhanced the lustre of hor glorious dark oyes, so that ina very short time the whole garrison was at ber feet, and all the civil sorvants were hopelessly in love.The older sister was completely thrown in tho shade, and she knew iL; but sho was quite free from any feeling of jealousy, and delighted in the Utivorsal admiration that Indiana inspired.Of course, among hor worshipers thero was one that the beauty preferred ; and though the spirit of enquetry which possessod her rendered her sentiments doubtful for a timo, sho submitted at last to become the botrothod of Captain Henry Wil- loughby, of Hor Majesty's Thirteenth Regimen! of Foot, a gallant officer and excellent man, who was a universal favorite, and ospucially approved of by Sir William.It is true his means wero small, but then the lady's fortune would amply suffico for both; and as thero was no particular reason for delay, Indiana consented to the day being fixed for the marriage.One morning, as she and her sister wore uccupied in looking over à num bor of trousseau dresses, just arrived from Csleutta, she was told that a person wished to speak with hor; and two native women entored tho room, the first thickly veiled, the other with her fuco uncovered, and carrying a baby of about a year old.To Indiana's rather hasty inquiry of what they wanted, the foremost answered by ro.moving her veil, and displaying features, which, thougb dark, were strikingly handsome; and then, approaching the white boauty, timidly asked, in broken English, if it was true that tho Bebeo was going to marry the Soubahdar Willoughby.Indiana nodded assent, with a smile and # blush, and Meenah Baee cuntin- uod : “Does the English” law allow men to have two wives?" “Good Heavens!” exclaimed Indiana angrily, “what does all this non- senso mean ?” while her calmer sistor answered : “Englishmen can never take a second wife till tho first is dead.” ° “Thon tbe Bebce musn’t marry the Soubabdar Suhib,” and sho handed to the sistors à piece of paper, which Indiana took and opened, and persued with an angry frown, though as she finished it, she laughed, and said : “This is somo stupid joke meant to frighten me.Somebody has been making a fool of you, I fear.” Then turning to hor sister: ‘Look, Annie; a contract of marriage between Henry Willoughby, captain in her majesty's One Hundred and Thirty First Foot, and Meenah Baee, daughter of Holkars Dewan, with some unreadable name or other, dated two years ago, at Indore.Do you mean to say,” and she turned fiercely to the woman, “that you consider yourself married to Captain Willoughby ?” Meenah Bace answered timidly in tho affirmative.A thick cloud rested on Indiana's brow as she again examined the document.5 “It is his signature,” sho said, with choking voice.‘Here is a note I had from him yesterday ; it is undoubtedly his writing, signed by u clergyman too, the Rev.W.Jones.” “There is Henry coming!” ox- claimed Annie, who was looking out of tho window.“We will have him in hore,” suid Indiana, coldly, ard gave orders to a sorvant.— You, Meenab Baec, remain voiled till I bid you show yourself.” Captain Willoughby Bentered the room with a look of deep depression on his face, which at any other timo would have roused Indiana's tonderest sympathy ; but now, without observing it, she bowed in a mannor thut at once startled and confounded him, and bofore ho could approach her said : “Captain Willoughby, you are como al a momont when your testimony is wanted.Have you over seen that person before 7” ‘ At her signal Meenah Bace raised ber veil, and Willoughby started slightly us he behold the beautiful face and ahswored rather vohemontiy, for ho fancied that Indiana was jealous ; “Nover, that I can remombor.” “Would it be inconveniont to you to oxort your memory a little?” demanded Indiana in tho same cold, hard voice ; while Meonah Bace, exclaiming, “It is he ! it is my husband I’ threw himself'at his foot, ombracing his knees, and kissed tho hem of his garments in her rapturo, Poor Captain illoughby, thoroughly bewildered by this obulition of tenderness on the part of a perfect stranger, and by his betrothed's sudden change of mannor, and also vpprossod.by the snd new that ho had oomo to communicate, could uot speak for a while, and his silence confirmed Indiana in her suspicions of his guilt At longth ho voplied : “I cannot recollect having over soon lor bofore, and what sho has to do with you and me, on my honor, I cannot conceive.” ‘Your conscience should tell you,” said Indinna.“So you porsist in disowning her ?” But Honry Willoughby's patienco could last no longer, and without noticing the lnat question he oxclaim- od : “What all this means, Indinna, you best know ; but I confoss it appears to me a very ull jot, especially undor the present circumstances.have sorrow cnough already without jour ndding to it.You,ftom whom'l oped for comfort I" hd’ added with emotion.Aftor n moment he recovered himself and went on: “My regiment is just ordored to march, at à moment's this evening.” Indinnn's face grow pale, but other.wise she gave no sign of emotion, us notice, against tho Sikhs, and we start bed sho hunded him the paper, and I said.“It may appear a jest to you, but it certainly is none to me.Rend that.” Willoughby read it as desired, and then said.“I never signed this papor.Itis true I wus at Indore about the timo when this marringo is said to havo taken piace, but surely, Indiana, you can not believe such à story as that about me.O, Anne! she can not ronlly belteve it!” Miss Keith shoul her hed sorrowfully, But did not speak, and Indiana, without looking athim, said : “Meonah Bueo,.cun you swear to this man as your husband ?” und the woman un.hesitutingly answered, “Yes.” On being further questioned by Anne, she related that hor husband had been obliged to leave Indore a tow days after the marringo, but she had lived on there till tha birth of hor child, when hor father, in ignorance of it all, and of her change of faith, wus anxious to give her in marriago to one of her own nation ; and to escape his importunity she had fled to Agra, and wbile making inquiries respecting her husband she had geen him on parade, and hearing that hô was about to be married, had come forward to assert her own claims, In answer to ail this, Captain Wil- loughby could give nothing but un emphatic denial ; but he owned that appearances were against him ; and Sir William, whom Anne had sum moned to the conference, looked disturbed, and said that it was just as well that Willoughby should have to loave Agra now, beforo the story got abrond.He would cause the matter to be thoroughly sifted, and the witnesses sought out whose names were appended to the document, and for the present, anyhow, the engagement had better be considered at an end.Captain Willoughby, whose pride | was deeply wounded ab his word being doubted.acquidsced, and approached Indiana to bid her farewell ; but his offored hand was rejected ; and haughtily bowing, she turned away ; and when that evening tho One Hundred and Thirtyfirst left Agra, in high spirits at tho prospect of an encounter with the Sikhs, perhaps the saddest heart among them was that of Henry Willoughby, whose only hope now was that he might fall in battle, and that Indiana might then ropent her injustice.But he was disappointed, and passed through all the battles of Moodkec, Ferozeshuh, Sobraon, without a scratch ; and though risking his life on every occasion in the most rockless and daring manner, and per, forming feais of the most heroic bravery, failed in findiug the death that he desired.Aftor Willoughby left her father’s house, Indiana still preserved the same stolid composure; hor pride was deeply hurt at the indignity that had been offered her, and yet, with strange inconsistency, she insisted on Meonah Bneo's taking up her abode in the house, and showed the greatest kindness toward her and her child.‘Perplexed by her sister's conduct, Anna Keith knew not what to do, or how to rouse her from her unnatural calmness ; but this was suddenly ended, for as tho troops loft Agra they had to pass by Sir William's house, Indiana fainted away, and it was somo hours before she recovered her senses.A long illness ensued, and left-her so wenk that tho doctors assured Sir William that his only chance of saving his child's life was to send her back to England ; and as his own health was giving way, he decided on resigning his appointment, und returning with hor.He had not forgotten his promise to Willoughby, and every inquiry was made, but in vain.The Rev.Mr.Jones had been dead for a year or more; the Dowan, though he hud discovered that Lis daugbtez had married an Englishman, was either unable or unwilling to give further informa.tinn ; and tho two native witnussos whose names wore appended had loft their country during some troubles and could not be traced ; and even Anna Keith's faith in Willoughby was beginning to give way ; though sho still clung to the beliof that some fatal mistake had occurred.Indiana's long illness bad destroyed the freshnoss of her beauty,but she still possessed sufficient charm to attract numerous admirers, and one of the most pertinacious was a Mr.Spurgeon, who had long been devoted to her, and who, on Willoughby"s departure, and, it was reporled, dismissal, agnin took tho field, though with no more success than boforo.> Sir William had stayod too long in India, and after leading an invalid life for a yonr in Bath and Tunbridge Wells, ho died, - leaving a fortune to his two daughters, who -theronpon established themselves in our squire, and led the useful and secluded lito that wo havo described.Meenah Paco, who, though she had boon baptized, was still known by hor former naine, and: tho little Lolia, accompanied them, and tho child was the objeot of tho warmest affection of both sisters, and muro especially of Indiana, whoso re sentment had long sinco been extinguished by Anne's kind and Christian counsels, and who now felt only pity for tho unfortunate Willoughby, with An occasiobla fooling of ‘pride when sho saw his name mentioned with prinso in tho dispatches, and of rogret at tho thought that such brilliant qualities should be united with so much basoness.Ono day, ton yoars aftor tho Misses Koith's cutablishmoit: ih.qur square, Anne was confined to tho house with a.gold, and Indiana went alone to the hospital whero they worolncoustomed to pay wookly visits.In one of tho wards sho missed a familiar fico, and Ilin nnswer to her.{Higairies was told that the poor sufferer ‘hed died fon! the day before her luat visit.“He ‘talkdd n goût doal about your kind- .ness Lo him, ma'am,” suid the nits, “and was very quiot and gentle to the lust.But tho putient ‘who hay his now is very troublesome.Ho was brought in nearly a weok ago buving boen run over by a oub, and wis hurt #6 Caa§ thar this hugo doesn’t think he'll get overit; and as she read on in her sweet, low voice, his grouns und restless movements gradually ceased, and he gazed on her still benn- tiful face with an expression from which all ill humor and suffering had vanished.When she finished one psalm, he begged for another; and when at last she prepared to go, he said : “Did [ not heur thom call you Miss Keith?” - “My name is Keith,” she wondor- ingly replied.“Can it be that you are the Indiana Keith whom I knew at Agra some ton years ago ?You have her voice and her features, but you are some- hat changed, though not sp much as am,” “Yes, I am Indiana Keith, and was living at Agra ten years ago; but who are you ?I seem now to remember you face, but not your name.” .“Have you quite forgotten Fleet wood Spurgeun, who wis one of the many you mide fools of 2" He spoke with an accent of bitterness, and Indisna felt it, and colored as she answored : “I remember you now ; but you are very much changed.How came you in this placo ?” ‘ “When you left Agra I didn't care what became of me, and soon got into trouble, and had to leave the place; and then I went to Calcutta, and so on to Australia, where, after some time, I got some gold.But I soon lost the greater part by gambling ; and so, tired of knocking about the world, I came back to the old country, and a warm reception she has given me.The very day I lundod, met with this accident; and unless the pain in my side gets better, I don't suppose I shall ever go out from here.” is reckless tone distressed Indiana, and she Began to urge an him the necessity of seeing a clergyman and preparing for his end; but he interrupted her by saying: “A parson would do me little good ; but there is one thing which I must confess before I die, and to you only, for it principally concerns yourself.You remem ber Willoughby of the Ong Hundred and Thirty-first 7” Indiana's blush answered, for she remained silent, and Spurgeon proceeded : “You probably thought that the cause of your quarrel was only known to yourselves—I moan his previous marriage to Mee- nah Baee—but I knew it all, for it was a plot of my own devising.I was mad with jealousy at Willough- by's success, and was meditating in what way I could injure him, when my.evil genius threw in my way Mçonah Buce, who hud comé to Agra in search of hor, husband, who was a captain in the One Hundred and Thirty-first Native Infantry, but, us I woll know, had boen missing for a year.or more, ever since some skirmish or other.His uname, Henry tion into Willoughby; and under pretence of assisting her search, 1 procured from her her marriage contract, which 1 destroyed, and substituted in its place a forged deed, imitating Willoughby’s signature and thoso of the witnesses, who I ascertained woke safe out of the way.Meonah Bueo, who could' not reud English, and only knew her husband's Christian name, nover discovered the forgery ;
