The Premier knew that if the commissioners had done their duty he and his associates would not have the power, would not be in a position, to expel or talk of expelling any man from the House.Considering the minority vote, considering the West Elgin ballots, considering the Macnish conies- sion, considering the recent developments in the Crown Lands Department.with the Sullivans apd the Taylors stealing our timber, “considering the corroborative evidence, if the Premier had any respect, if he had a particle of that theological garb that he had thrown sround himself for years, if he had any pride he would stick out like a fan and appeal to the people and ask what party should rule. But he dare not do it.He was afraid to do it “Talk about expelling me }—tite people would expel him so quick, sir, that he would have thought he never was in the House.” (Applause.) .Mr.Gamey said friends of his in the southern States had written telling him the kind of force that would be used down there against such a Government as we had here, but he woukl not tell the House what it was.(Laughter) ."My conduct will be just the same in the future,” said Mr.Gamey in conclusion, 1 make my charges again, sir) that I made on the 11th of March.am not afraid to make them outside the House, sir, and will take an carly opportunity to stand right up in this Province and make these charges again.and then I will defy the Provincial Secretary to take any action against me, and if "he does 1 will then have the case tried where, 1 want it, and before a} of ot Ji pu eat Si - phitge.) me tell you, sir, that 1 would rather be R.R.Gamey to-day se but | ins cant to me that I will not refer to him at all.(Some applause) Lo again, when these gentlemen act ndent, as L lis to, and not as pensioners on the Government, and fathers of pensioners on the Government—that is what they are, pensioners on the Government of Ontario, and fathers of pensioners—iet me repeat that, with their progeny and the social conditions of their progeny staring them in the face when they are writing 3 report to condemn me; when théy stand out like men, then I might consider their report. But until then I Will not consider it at all except in this way: that I will analyze it, as I have done, show that it is false and wrong, sir, and when I can do that, sir, I have ect confidence in the people of this rovince, when the time comes, to say who is guilty or not.“But I just want to close by saying that I will fight this case.I will not stop.Evidence will come out later on; I have evidence now, sir, but I will not tell you of it.I will go home irom this House, proud of the fact that 5 have told the truth, proud of the fact that no man will ever have to accuse me of asking a man to be a perjurer. That is what I will do.And, sir, let me tell you, there is a God in heaven | believe in Him, whether the Provincial Secretary does or not.” Some day, sir, he has got to reckon with that God, and let me tell him before this House and before the people of this Province, sir, that He knows, God knows, what L sate is absolutely true, and what he says is wrong and false, and I leave it to the future and to that God to judge who is right and who is wrong.” (Loud Opposition applause.) nothing like scour acy is obtainable.Besides, the changes in atmospheric pressure which invalidate the indications of a barometer would likewise cause a trifling variation in the boiling point of a given level, say 14,000 eet.A third method would seem to be a little more trustworthy, though this requires data that are mot always avail: able, and it, too, has its drawbacks. If & surveyor knows the exact horizontal distance between himself and a mountain, and his own elevation above sea level, he can determine the mountain’ height by measuring the angle between the line of vision and a true horizontal. The great difficulty with such an undertaking ia to get the one important factor of distance with precision, without an amount of traveling and triangulation which is almost impracticable in a range like the Himalayas. Moreover, possibilities of error are opened up by atmospheric refraction.A peak may not be exactly where it seems to be in the sur- 28 below that point.- Btill another source of miscalculation was discussed à few duys ago by “Engineering,” a London publication. When & surveyor attempts to determine an angle in a vertical plane he must be sure that the spirit level on his instrument is absolutely truthful. If any unrecognized intluence operates to affect it, even to the most minute degree, the value of any computation based on the measurement of angles is impaired.Something like thirty years ago two German professors, Fischer of Etutegart and Hann of Vienna, expressed the opinion that the pre of great continental masses, and especially of mountain ranges, would exert enough lateral attraction on a plummet to throw the line which sus- nded it out of & vertical position.ln ike manner it would tilt up the fluid in + a spirit level, which, like the plummet, €s governed primarily by gravitation.British surveyors in India denied this, and held that a level was trustworthy after all A Since that time.however, fresh data have accumulated tending to show that, though the German experts may have greatly exaggerated the amount of the error, the latter really exists.Major 8.G.Burrard of the British Royal Engineers, has been studying the matter carefully, and has just made the following statements. At a distance of a hundred miles or more from the base of the Himalayas he says, the plane of a level is exactly horizontal; at fifty miles it has be gun to tilt; at ten miles the difference may amount to twenty-five seconds, while in the foothills it may be forty- five seconds; and what it is in the heart of the mountains “we do not know.” On the whole, Major Burrard thinks that the trouble would not call for a corree- tion exceeding sixty feet—a correction that involves addition to the original estimate—but he adds that “the question bristles with uncertainties and assumptions.” Fischer and Hann suggested that altitudes might be ascertained by counting the number of pendulum beats in a day, as in measuring the flattening of the earth toward the poles.General Walker, a British expert, declared tbat there were deficiencies of matter, if not cavi- jes, underlying the Himalayas which ould make that plan inapplicable; and “Engineering” adds: “Subsequent re search bas upheld General Walker.” The Social Veneer.| “Montesquieu tells us that if we scratch a n we find a Tartar, but the sudden transformation that de brought about by small irritations is by no means confined to the Slavonic race, but rather belongs to all sorts and conditions of men and women,” said a mat.son.“Conventionality makes people gore or less alike.{ t in society , Who has a ve ot temper, appears to be as amiable FA Mrs.Z., who has no MPR.04 being grecly and greepin rs, ng y and grasping, or Mrs.B.of being particularly generous and fair-minded.Yet all these thi exist, and sometimes it only needs thance to scratch to show people in their true light.Games seem to be one of the social touchstones that betray character. To be a good loser or a loser commands or forfeits respeet, while generosity or meannees, ding or eness, and many other minor qualifications, are srought to the fore by such an apparently simple thing as Playing a game. Some of the s told of women who have lost their heads at card parties during the Inst season seem almost incredible when one realizes that they re er to women of education and position, who certainly should not under any circumstances resem 1 oa when she is in.a rage.a prove, however, thet we mil human, and gigi cerateh gen we are very the bousgesiss” “It never pays to hurt people’s feelings,” remarked the Humane Chap.“Oh, I dont know,” replied the Wise ; crowded to overflowing in the afternoon by a representative audience which listened attentively to the many addresses and manifested ite interest in the proceedings by staying through to the close. After some well rendered selections by the Lyndonville Military Band, the chairman, Bro.A.N.and then delivered an address which worthy of 0 important an occasion.Lodge, he assured the visiting Master.Following came a similar preeenta- tion to the Mt.Wor.O.W.Daly, Grand Master of Vermont. This was made by Bro.J.B.Keating, British Vice-Consul of Portland, Me., who in the course of his address made some happy historical illusions. He said reference had been made to the unhappy differences that had arisen between the two great branches of the Anglo-Saxon people. Some historians said these differences grew out of the Boston “Tea Party” but that was a very partial explanation. However, the English were whipped yet the reason had never been satisfactorily explained. He ventured to say that the British were very poor runners and because the Americans were their brothers they allowed themselves to be licked to save further complications.Drawing from his breast a Union Jack he said Englishmen revered it because it was their flag and Amer- fcans honored it because it was once the colors under which they lived. Then drawing forth the Stars and Stripes he declared the Englishman honored the flag the American loved because it was the emblem of liberty and the flag of their brothers. He then handed both of the National emblems in miniature to Bro.Daly expressing the fervent hope tbat they might ever fly side by side as their respective countries advanced in their unison of civilisation throughout the world. The flag incident elicited a great outburst of international entha- siasm, the vast audience rising en masse wbile the band played “God Save the King” and ‘Yankee Doodle” at the appropriate moment.Mt.Wor.Bro.Keating made a very fitting reply to the very cordial address that had been tendered him.He sald he was there as a representative of eleven litioally divided by the imaginery line of 45 degrees, they were bound together by the indissoluble chain of Masonic brotherhood. He was happy to be present because of the part the Grand Lodge of Vermont has.played in the securing to the Grand Lodge of Canada their undoubted rights. In 1858 on Oct.10th, forty-one lodges of Canada met at Hamilton ané formed everywhere to stand for high principle and moral order. To him some | exceptional privileges had been granted. He had visited a lodge composed of Indians in Wisconsin the Master of which was a graduate of Hanover Oollege, N.H., and though the whole ceremony was in the native tongue of the members yet he found the true Masonic spirit. In Kentucky he saw the rope which was prepared for his hanging and only his connection with his Masonic order had saved him from an untimely and unmerited death. He believed thoroughly in the order because it stood for all that was helpful in maintaining the best elements of our social life. When the honored brother resumed his seat the audience again expressed its appreciation of his remarks by continuous applause.During the Civil War Mr.and Mrs.Gustin were in Kentucky. They lived with Col.Metcalf, a prominent Union officer, and were there at the time of Morgan's raid.Col.Met- calf fled leaving his house in the Possession of Mr.Gustin, he being a Canadian. The Southerners became suspicious of Mr.Gustin and he was taken into custody by the Texan Rangers. They had decided to hang him to a flag pole and he was summoned before Col.Gano, the Federal commander, acting as Brigadier-Gen- eral of the Texan Rangers, who seemed determined upon his punishment until Mr.Gustin hinted that such an act would not be a brotherly deed between Mason and Mason. He wag spared knd afterwards treated with great courtesy by the Southern commander, Bro.8.W.Foster was also the recipient of a commemorative medal which was presented to him by the Rt.Wor.Bro.Will H.Whyte.Bro.Foster in replying indulged in many pleasant and interesting reminiscen- | ces of his connection in early life with Stanstead and its vicinity. At the conclusion of & long program the interest in which had been bec, and Rev.G.Ellery Read were called upon to make some remarks which they briefly did setting forth the high ideals of the order they were proud to bé connected with and emphasising the potential influences which might become active in solving some of the most
