discovered by Howard Wells, night watchman, in the course of his regular rounds at 5 o'clock. In a few minutes the company’s reel was on hand, manned by employes living near the works. The hose was coupled to a hydrant opposite G.W.Dor- man’s residence and carried across the river. It was not until a quarter to six that the gong sounded. The Rock Ie)and reel started but was upset and wrecked by automobile, The dry house is a brick building, 24x28 feet, located at the west end of the new box factory, to which it is attachedby a narrow wooden extension.Shavings were used largely for fuel, being conveyed by blower to the boiler room, where they were held in a loft.Fuel and woodwork in the boiler room gave the fire ite start. The ‘‘curing’’ room is seperated from the boiler room by a double brick wail, but the fire got through’ probably following the rafters, or possibly entering through slight openings around the steam pipes which convey steam heat to the Jum- ber. When it became evident that the lumber was on fire a line of hose was carried in through the box factory; then the ‘‘fire doore’’ were opened into the kiln.A hole was also cut through the roof into which water was turned Although uneasy to combat the fire was at no time beyond the contol of the men.Yesterday afternoon shavings in the boiler room caught fire but the that a complaint has been made in writing against the proprietors of the Rock Island House and the Union House for alleged sale of liquor on “Saturday night,on Sunday, and otherwise during forbidden hours.” The words in Italics are quoted from the letter received from the Treasury this letter the complaint was addressed to the Honorable 8ir Lomer Gouin, Premier of the’ Province, and the names affixed as signers were those of Rev.A Lee Holmes, Geo.J.Trueman, John C.Holland and James F.Teltôrd.About the complaint there seems to have been something which caused the officials of the Treasury Department to be suspicious of the genuineness of the “signatures” attached, and it was to clear up this matter and secure certain particulars that the comptroller of Provincial Revenue wrote a letter to Mr.Holmes last Thursday, “before taking action,” as the letter states.Mr.Holmes has been somewhat an- well of late, and, to save her husband trouble, Mrs.Holmes handed the letter over to Principal Trueman, who notified Messrs.Holland and Telford.Coming like a bolt from a clear sky it is only natural to conclude that the letter creaied a mild sensation. From the Comptroller’s letter it would appear that the only name spelled exactly right is that of Mr.Telford and from that the **middle initial’’ was omitted. This inaccuracy may, however, have been due to a desire on the part of the forger to divert suspicion from himself. Some of the men whose namee had been used were in a quandary "ae to what course sbould be pursued in dealing with the matter. In answer to a question put by the JOURNAL, Principal Trueman ironically said: “Well, possibly the complainant thought these names were the very ones which ought to be signed to such a complaint.” The letter addressed to Mr.Holmes has been answered by Principal True- man, but as to the contents of hie letter Mr.Trueman vouchsafed no answer in conversing with the JOURNAL'S representative. The men whose names have been used are naturally very curious about the affair, and it is not unlikely that one of them may go to Quebec to make an investigation there.Naturally no man likes to have bis name forged; particularly as if it be forged in ope case it may be in another.WELLS-PIERCE WEDDING.A very beautiful wedding was solemnized last Thursday, June 20th, at noon, when Mr.Charles Wright Wells, eldest son of Mr.and Mre.Clarence C.Wells, Miss Ida Lucile Pierce, daughter ot Mrs.Ada Pierce, were married at the Congregational Church by the pastor, Rev.Horace F.Hallett.The church auditorium was most beautifully decorated in green and white, snowballs and ferns were used about the altar in profusion. The arrangement was by an artistic eye and deft hand. Each pew arm was marked with a spray of ferns and white daisies. The ushers were: Messrs.Stewart Taylor and Reginald Hanson. The church was well filled at a little past 11.30 to listen to a recital by Mise Mirabel Robinson, organ, Miss Edna Caswell, piano, and Miss Clara Sibyl Smith, violin. At noon the groom marched in on the arm of his best man, Mr.Eugene Charles Wells, a brother, and the bride on the arm of her mother, carrying white sweet peas, preceeded by Mies Corinne Veest, bridesmaid, carrying American beauty roses, and little Mande Elizabeth Martin as flower girl. The ceremony was simple, beautiful and impressive. The facuity of the College, of which the bride has been a most acceptable co-worker and member for the past two years, was nearly all present and a very large quota of students. Many of the groom’s relatives were present. The groom le in the employ of But- terfield & Co, being assistant to his tather, who is general superintendent tor this corporation. The bride has made many friends since the adoption of the Three Villages as her-bome, and her beautiful voice, of whioh she was almost prodigal in alding every activity for betterment, has not been her only asset, a sweet spirit of cheer and neighborliness has made us all glad that she has cast her Jot with ue, and the full church at the wedding evidenced the high esteem held for both these young people.Mr.and Mre.Wells are to spend their honeymoon at the Wells summer home at Cedarville, Lake Mem- phremagog, and will occupy a portion of the Welle residence on Railroad street when they return. They were well remembered by many beautiful and useful gifte.GRANITEVILLE.: The services is withdrawn for next Sanday to give people an opportunity of attending campmeeting at Beebe.Mr.Warren adjourned meeting of the Rock Island council was held on Friday evening, the session being mostly devoted to the valuation roll. The val- uators, Messrs.James F.Telford, O.O.Wells and J.M.Gilmore, submitted à liet of properties affected by transfer and the erection of new buildings during the past year.Except in one instance the list was adopted as presented. The valuation placed upon Ralph Hethereil’s property was cut down fifteen or twenty per cent.by the council. At the request of the valuators Mrs.Aldrich’s property on Maple Avenue was decreased to the amount at which it was listed by them last year; at that time the valuation was raised $200 by the council. An explanation made it appear that this was an injustice, hence the reduction. The new list adds almost forty thousand dollars to the taxable valuation of the municipality.Taxes were levied as follows: General assessment 15 mille, special water tax 814 mills, rental tax 8'; mills, poll tax $1.These rates Were in effect last year. The assessments, including the school tax, amount to 3814 mills. The electric contract was again under discussion. At the previous meeting complaint was made that the Sherbrooke Railway & Power Company bad refosed to turn on the light to a consumer using a meter without a six months’ contract.À letter signed by Mr.Pilcher, general manager of the Company, stated that all rates were ‘‘annual,” and expressed surprise that such a complaint should have been made.In view of the fact that the only time mentioned in the clause of the municipal contract relating to meters in one month, the oounoll, by resolution, authorized the town atterney to demand that current be supplied to the complainant, other- [wise the company’s action would be regarded as an infraction of the general contract.“LOOK WHO’S COMING” THE OLD RELIABLE J.B.SWAFFORD'S PAVILION THEATRE STOCK COMPANY UNDER CANVAS ENTIRE CHANGE OF PLAYS EVERY NIGHT -
