COMPANY, Newport, Vt.DEATH FOLLOWED OPERATION.Mr.J.M.Gilmore Passed Away at Royal Victoria Hospital Early Sunday Morning. In the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, at 5.30 8.m, Sunday, Mr.Jeremiah Mitchell Gilmore passed to his final reward. His illness began eight weeks ago.The principal ailment was 1 severe headache and local hysicians were baffled by the pe- ouliarities of the case, which seemed to respond to no treatment.Five weeks ago the patient became confined to the house.Once the disorder was diagnosed as ‘*walking typhoid.” The pridcipal symptoms was a terribly severe headache and delirium; he had no fever.Monday, December 2nd, a specialist wae called, and with the aid of modern electrical instruments, succeeded in locating an unnatural growth on the brain. The case was of the most critical and alarming nature. After three days’ treatment and observation, the physicians decided that |g; the only hope, the one faint chance of saving a life, lay in an operation.Accordingly the patient was removed to Montreal Thursday morning. In the operation, which was performed Friday afternoon, it was discovered that the growth was of a tumorous nature, the whole of the brain being involved. The surgeons gave no bope for permanent recovery, and, without regaining consciousness, the patient passed peacefully away at the hour above stated, surrounded by a number of those nearest a d dearest to him.The remains were brought home Sunday night.Deceased was a son of the late Albert Gilmore, and was born at Rock Island, April 5, 1866.He received bis early business training with his brother, James A.Gilmore, who then conducted a store in this village.Afterwards the deceased went to St.Johns- bury, Vt., where he engaged in the boot and shoe business. He remained in St.Johnsbury nine years, and was manager of the Howe Opera House a considerable portion of this time. After his return to Rock Island he became connected with the Giobe Suspender Company representing this concern in the Eastern Townships and Eustern Ontario for a term of twelve years. This experience on the road gave him a broad acquaintance, and he enjoyed the confidence of the trade and was held in high esteem by his fellow travelers. Some two years ago the late Mr.Gilmore, with’ F.J.Robbins, now of Indianapolis, launched the R Manufacturing Co., one of Rock Island’s successful industries.Mr.Gilmore remained at the head of this concern until the time of his death, bis first partner’sinterest having been sold to Mr.Audinwood something like a year ago.On September 25, 1894, while living at St.Jobnabury, Mr.Gilmore married Mies Julia Fitzgerald of that place, by whom he is survived; he also leaves one daughter, Miss Mary Gilmore, besides a number of other near relatives, including his mother, Mrs.Albert Gilmore, three sisters, Mrs.J.F.Pa- quette, Mrs.8B.T.Fregeau, and Miss Annie Gilmore, three brothers, Messrs.James A., Patrick and Charles Z.Gilmore.Deceased also had many intimate friends, bere and elsewhere, by whom his untimely end will be deeply mourned. The funeral took place at the R.C.Chnrch at 9 a.m.yesterday and was largely are coming to light.Outsiders who see the “wrangling” would understand it better were some of these ‘facts’ presented. We only propose to mention a few that have not found their way into print. We sre told that tha engineers passed only over the direct route and returned to Sherbrooke by train, showing it was done to ‘keep up appearances’ and keep the Hatley ratepayers in the dark.t is reported and believed that when the Hatley delegation, with a long list of namea to their petition for a direct line, went to Quebec a certain man in the adjoining municipality telephoned Mr.Caron not to pay any attention to them.Itis now known that surmises are uite sure to be correct, that the M.J's and a few got close and developed the plan to suit, who?Why call it a route for the “tourists,” if consulted would they not prefer a direct line and shorter distance?Let us touch on sn important point, After the Government has stated that the matter is settled and can not be changed, can they go back on their word and say the macadam road will not be built because of the ‘‘wrangle.” A Government is supposed to be stable, but if not, there may be a host of a chance yet to divert ‘‘the ong round about way, billy as the “debbil’’ route, to ita proper course, atraight through from Quebec, Sher- brooks to the Derby Line
